Lady Raiders Open Against N. York and E. Penn

The sport of softball is played in the Spring, the season of new life and energy. Unfortunately for the Lady Raiders they have been unable to harness that energy into their efforts on

the softball diamond. The result is a 0-2 start after season opening losses to Northern York and East Pennsboro. The 16-6 loss to East Penn took place on March 27th with the Lady Panthers needing just five innings to secure the win. Jenna Alford got the

start for Middletown and took the loss after absorbing the brunt of the East Pennsboro’s onslaught, which resulted in 12 hits and seven walks during four innings of work and covered 14 of the Lady Panthers 16 runs. Six Middletown errors meant that only 10

of East Pennsboro’s runs were earned with Alford on the hook for nine of them. She did add all three of the Lady Raiders strikeouts during her time in the circle. Madison Gipe finished off the final two innings and surrendered the final two runs on three hits and no walks or strikeouts. Luvi Balliet and Carly Dupes paced the offense with a combined three RBI on two hits. Both of those hits were doubles with Balliet’s first inning shot to right plating two of the Lady Raiders five runs in the frame. Dupes also picked up her RBI with a first inning double, pushing Jenna Jerome across for a short-lived Middletown lead. Camilia Martinez posted the Lady Raiders’ lone multi-hit game, poking a first inning single to left and a fourth inning double to left center while Hayli Akakpo-Martin collected the final hit of the game, a fifth inning single. One day prior, the Lady Raiders traveled to Dillsburg for a battle with Northern York that resulted in a 15-5 Lady Polar Bear victory. Noelle Zimmerman took the loss, covering all four and two-thirds innings of the 10-run rule shorten game. Zimmerman was tagged for 10 Northern hits with no strikeouts and five walks but only three of the 15 runs were earned thanks to seven Middletown errors. The Lady Raiders managed six hits

with Jerome and Katie Fitzpatrick combining for four. Fitzpatrick made the most of her two base knocks, driving in two of Middletown’s three third inning runs with a RBI single. She added a RBI triple in the fifth that plated one run and later scored on a Northern error for Middletown’s final score. Jerome matched Fitzpatrick’s triple and single but instead of driving runs in she settled for scoring both times on base. Balliet, with a single in the second, and Akakpo-Martin, who singled in the third, were responsible for Middletown’s final two hits. TRACK The track and field team hit the ground running on March 26th for their first meet of the 2019 season. The result was a 103-48 loss for the boy’s and a 119-31 loss for the girls. Will Brown and Arthur Dash collected two wins each for the Blue Raiders with Jose Lopez, Dylon Zettlemoyer and Aiden Sessa each contributing one win.

Brown did his work in the distance events, taking the 1600m with a time of 5:01 and the 3200m in 11:18.4. Dash’s two wins came in the field thanks to throws of 40’ in the shot put and 121’ in the discus. Sessa picked up the 800m win with a time of 2:11.8 while Lopez claimed the 100m (11.8). Zettlemoyer’s victory came in the 300H (48.0). The Lady Raiders were unable to crack the winner’s column but did set a staggering 43 personal records on the day. TENNIS While the rest of the Middletown spring sport teams are just getting started the boy’s tennis team is nearly halfway through their 2019 campaign. With six of their 14 matches in the books the Blue Raiders are still searching for their first victory after losses to East Pennsboro, Trinity, Harrisburg Academy, James Buchanan, Bishop McDevitt and Susquehanna Township. Unfortunately, the Blue Raiders dropped that game with Northern York by a 14-9 final. Scott Ash got the start and took the loss for his work covering the opening three frames. He did strike out six during that time but he also issued seven free passes to go along with four hits leading to three runs, all earned. Mike Tuffy covered the ensuing one and one third innings, surrendering four more hits and four of Northern’s seven fifth inning runs. Jaxson Senior finished hitless in his four plate appearances but his fifth inning walk plated Middletown’s fourth run of the game and kicked started a five-run frame. Avery Williams, Cam Peter and Tim Wagner finished up the offense with one hit and one RBI apiece. One day later the Blue Raiders lasted just three innings in a 15-0 loss to East Pennsboro. Brady Keyser absorbed the bulk of the Panther attack while taking the loss. The starter allowed 10 runs (eight earned) on eight hits, five walks and one strikeout during two innings on the mound. Justin Yohn covered the final third of an inning and was tagged for the final five East Penn runs on one hit and two walks to go with one strikeout. Williams collected the lone Blue Raider hit, a first inning single.

More than 40 flyball teams from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, New York, and West Virginia have registered to participate in the upcoming tournament. Flyball is a fast-paced dog team relay race. Flyball races match two teams of four dogs each, racing side-by-side over a 51-foot-long course. Each dog must run in relay fashion over four jumps, trigger a flyball box, releasing the ball, retrieve the ball, and return over the jumps. The first team to have all four dogs complete the course clean wins the heat. More information about the Clean Break Flyball Club is available at www.cleanbreak.org.

Chatter Hi everyone! Happy April! Did March whiz right past us? I swear it was just February. February of 2009. Today’s Blessing There was a man that hated his footprints and his shadow. So, one day he thought that if he ran fast enough, his footprints and shadow would not be able to follow him, and then he would never have to look at them again. He ran and he ran as fast as he could, but the shadow and the footprints had no problems keeping up to him. And he ran even faster, and all of a sudden, he fell dead to the ground. But if he had been standing still, there wouldn’t have been any footprints, and if he had been resting under a tree, his shadow would have been swallowed by the tree’s shadow. (Benjamin Hoff, author of “The Tao of Pooh”) Many times, we hate our problems and do our best to run away from them, but no matter how fast we run or how far we go, our problems follow, scurrying behind us like footprints and shadows. Little do we realize that, if we will just stand still and wait, breathing deep and relaxing both body and mind, the solution, in similar fashion to the shadow of the tree, will swallow up the problem whole and leave us free to celebrate. Recipe of the Week Beef Noodle Casserole Ingredients: 12 ounces egg noodles uncooked 2 teaspoons olive oil 1 1/4 pounds lean ground beef (I use 90 percent lean) 1 onion, finely chopped 2 teaspoons minced garlic salt and pepper to taste 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning 16 ounces canned tomato sauce 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese 2 tablespoons chopped parsley cooking spray Directions: 1. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil; add the egg noodles and cook according to package directions. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

2. While the noodles are cooking, heat the olive oil in a large pan over medium high heat. 3. Add the ground beef to the pan and cook for 4 to 5 minutes, breaking up the meat with a spatula. 4. Add the onion and garlic to the pan and cook for an additional 5 minutes, or until onion has softened and beef is cooked through. 5. Add the tomato sauce and Italian seasoning to the beef and stir to combine. 6. Drain the noodles and add to the pan with the beef; toss to combine. 7. Pour the beef and noodle mixture into a 9by-13-inch baking pan that’s been coated in cooking spray. Top with cheddar cheese. 8. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until cheese is melted. Sprinkle with parsley and serve. Tip of the Week If you need heavy cream for a recipe, make your own by combining 2/3 cup whole milk with 1/3 cup melted unsalted butter. This will give you 1 cup of heavy cream. Fact of the Week Fortune cookies are actually an American invention. They originated in California. Joke of the Week Me: “Do you think it’s strange that I talk to myself?” Me: “No.” Thank You Thanks to my pal Francis Kasper of Middletown for the Food for Thought! Food for Thought I’ve seen better days, but I’ve also seen worse. I don’t have everything that I want, but I do have all I need. I woke up with some aches and pains, but I woke up. My life may not be perfect, but I am blessed! Count your blessings, not your problems! Have a great week, everybody!
