Hi everyone! I yearn for the good ole days of my youth. I am sure a lot of it is because I was a kid, but the ’60s and ’70s just seemed like such a simpler, slower, more innocent time. Friends In Action from pg 1 FIA supports mission work in areas of limited infrastructure by using construction projects to communicate the Gospel. Last year, FIA hosted nearly 75 volunteers who served as “blue collar missionaries.” Because FIA partners with trained missionaries already on the ground, volunteers offer their life experiences and construction skills to demonstrate God’s love in tangible ways, while national pastors or missionaries share the Gospel in some of the most remote locations in the

world. In 2018, FIA volunteers reached more than 200,000 people through 10 projects in six remote locations. Their efforts provided clean water to more than 20,000 West African villagers; medical assistance to 1,200 people in the Amazon jungle; Christian radio broadcasting to more than 200,000 people in Bolivia and Brazil; community transformation projects to 1,400 Rama Cay people of Nicaragua;

and discipleship training to almost 3,000 in Moldova, Papua New Guinea, and Bolivia. Paul Brosey, FIA’s project and team coordinator, recently met with Merv Breckbill from Wallto-Wall Floor Covering in Strasburg to discuss how FIA and Wallto-Wall could partner together to impact people physically and spiritually. Blue Raider Baseball Battles Camp Hill by Eric Pyles

The first day of April is synonymous with pranks and practical jokes but for the Middletown baseball team the joke came one day later in the form of a 5-3 loss to Camp Hill. The Lions jumped on Blue Raider starter Scott Ash early, using a three run third to pad their one run lead and forcing Middletown into serious catch-up mode. Middletown began what ultimately became a failed comeback bid with an

Avery Williams triple in the fifth that made it a 4-1 game. Another Camp Hill run in the seventh meant a 5-1 hill to climb over the final three outs. The Blue Raiders did their best and pushed across two runs with a Williams walk and a Cam Peters fielder’s choice but the Lion margin was too much to overcome. Williams added a third inning single to his late game efforts while Ash enjoyed Middletown’s only other multi-hit game, rapping out two singles. Ash ended up with the loss for his

six innings on the mound despite striking out 11 to go with just one walk and three hits. Tony Powell finished things up with a 24-pitch seventh where Camp Hill scored the second of their two unearned runs of the game. The Blue Raiders rebounded in a big way on April 4th, taking out SteelHigh 14-0 in five innings. Brady Keyser was the beneficiary of the ample run support, needing just two innings to secure the win. He did allow the lone Roller hit and walk but he struck out two while keeping Steel-High off the board. Mike Tuffy covered the final three innings and retired five of the nine batters he faced with a strikeout, finishing up the shutout. Middletown opened the game with a scoreless first but erupted from there, starting with a four run second inning. Justin Yohn and Tim Wagner highlighted the kickstart with Yohn driving in two runs with his lone hit of the game. Wagner collected half his RBI total with a one run walk that

capped the four-run frame. Jaxson Senior took over from there with matching two-run doubles in the third and fourth innings to give the senior a four RBI day. Yohn finished up his day with a fifth inning fielder’s choice for his third RBI while Wagner drove in his final run the old-fashioned way, with a single. Mother Nature bounced what had been an April 5th faceoff with Shippensburg to the 6th where the Blue Raiders were able to squeak out a 4-3 win over the visiting Greyhounds. Ash had a second straight solid start end without a win but at least this time Middletown still picked up the victory. Ash’s no decision covered six and one third innings and 10 strikeouts and despite all three Shippensburg runs scoring while the senior was on the mound all were unearned thanks to six Middletown errors. Keyser took over once Ash reached his pitch limit and finished out the final two-thirds of an inning with no runs, hits, walks or

strikeouts, setting the stage for the comeback. Ray Truntz ended that comeback with his third hit of the game but it was Wagner that kicked things off. Wagner was the first of two straight Blue Raiders to reach base after getting hit by a pitch in the bottom of the seventh. After a wild pitch moved him and AJ Stains to second and third base, Garrett Miller kept things rolling with a one out walk that loaded the bases. Truntz finished his three-hit game with the game winning single back up the middle that allowed Wagner to score the winning run. Williams posted a two-hit game with his fifth inning double inching

Middletown to within a run at 3-2. Ash had just one hit, a first inning single, but it resulted in Middletown’s first run after a few Greyhound errors. Ash’s offensive highlight was a sixth inning catcher interference call that gave him his lone RBI for the game, and tied the game at 3-3. TENNIS The boy’s tennis team struggled through a two-match week and remained winless on the season. Middletown dropped a 5-0 final to Camp Hill on April 2nd and to East Pennsboro on April 4th. TRACK The boy’s and girl’s track and field teams had a light first week of April

with no regular season dual meets to get in the way of their prep for the 18th Bruce Dallas Invitational which was held at Cumberland Valley High School on Saturday April 6th. The Blue Raiders collected a total of seven top 10 finishes highlighted by a pair of fourth place medals. Tamia Hill-Johnson was responsible for the Lady Raiders fourth place finish, tossing the shotput 31-6.75, finishing two inches outside the top three and just over four inches from gold. For the boy’s team it was a blazing 44.57 in the 400m relay that secured a fourthplace finish. Jose Lopez added a fifthplace finish in the 100m thanks to a 11.38. Joci Koser accounted for the only other top ten finish for the Lady Raiders, placing eighth in the 200m with a time of 27.63. She added a 13th place finish in the 300H as the only Lady Raider to place in the top 15 in multiple events. Arthur Dash enjoyed the same feat on the boy’s side with his eighth-place toss of 122 in the discus highlighting his day. Dash slipped into the shotput’s top ten with a 10th place heave of 39-7.5. William Brown nearly enjoyed the same double as his teammates after placing 11th in the 3200m with a time of 10:23.66 but his 4:49.59 in the 1600m left him 24th, just over 10 seconds outside the top 15. Aiden Sessa finished up the boy’s top 15 finishers by clocking a 2:04.24 in the 800m, good enough for eighth

place. Jaleena Marrero and Alexandria Kennedy both collected matching 15th place finishes with Marrero posting a 13:22.95 in the 3200m while Kennedy did her work in the javelin competition with a top throw of 90-8. Ayanna Reeves joined the throwing fun with a 12th place finish in the discus thanks to a throw of 82-2. SOFTBALL The softball team picked up their first win of the 2019 season with a 14-4 thrashing of Camp Hill on April 2nd. Madison Gipe picked up the easy win, after scattering six hits and four runs (two earned) over seven innings. She added three walks and three strikeouts to her work for the day. Katie Fitzpatrick was the offensive star with four hits and four RBI but Sara Dintiman, Carly Dupes and Noelle Zimmerman all had multi-hit games that produced two RBI days. Fitzpatrick’s day was highlighted by her three-run shot that came as part of a five run sixth inning. She also added a seventh inning single that helped finish up the 10-run victory. Despite three hits for the game Dintiman picked up both of her RBIs with a single in the fifth. Dupes pushed the lead to 4-1, kicking off the first of two straight five run innings by smacking a triple that scored Camilia Martinez before scoring herself on the throw home.

Zimmerman picked up her two-RBIs with a sixth inning triple that finished off the second five run frame for Middletown. Hailey Hockenberry collected three hits during her five trips to the plate with her fourth inning single plating Middletown’s lone run of the frame, putting the Lady Raiders up 2-1 and setting the stage for the offensive outburst that followed. Two days later Middletown was unable to get their offense going leading to a 5-0 loss to Susquehanna Township. The Lady Raiders managed just

one hit, a fifth inning single by Jenna Jerome, with Dupes the only other player to reach base. She did so twice, once thanks to a first inning Township error and again with a fourth inning walk. Zimmerman covered all six innings in the circle for Middletown meaning she was on the hook for the five Lady Indian runs but six Middletown errors meant all five runs were unearned. Zimmerman did allow eight hits to go with no walks and one strikeout in the loss.

Hundreds of Pennsylvania farmers recently visited classrooms to read a book to young students to celebrate Ag Literacy Week, which is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation (PFAF), a charitable group supported by Pennsylvania Farm Bureau (PFB). More than 200 Farm Bureau members visited more than

1,460 classrooms and reached approximately 36,000 students in 54 counties during the third annual celebration of Pennsylvania Ag Literacy Week, held March 18 to 22. The foundation selected the book “Right This Very Minute” by Lisl H. Detlefsen, a table-to-farm book about food and farming. It was read to students in

Dauphin County farmer Marcie Graybill (back, center) led students at East Hanover Elementary School in a hands-on activity during an Ag Literacy Week event. Graybill and more than 200 other farmers visited schools in 54 counties across the state to participate in activities and read a book to students in kindergarten through second grade.

Pictured on front: Chester County farmer Deborah Ellis (right) showed students eggs from a goose and a duck during her visit to Shamona Creek Elementary School near Downingtown as part of the Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation’s Ag Literacy Week. Ellis also read the book “Right This Very Minute” to students, after which they played an interactive game.

Middletown Area High School student Mason Garza, Class of 2019, was recently invited to join the Lebanon Valley College (LVC) eSports team. Garza plans to attend the school to major in analytical finance in hopes of securing a job in the field of corporate business. Garza learned about the eSports team from an email he received from the college, to which he had already been accepted. The email included an announcement that LVC was accepting applications for gamers for the school’s newly formed eSports team. If accepted to the team, students would receive a $2,500 scholarship per year to play online competitive collegiate gaming. One of the nine games played on the college level is “Rocket League,” which just happens to be in Garza’s wheelhouse. Garza met with the LVC eSports coaches and demonstrated his “Rocket League”

skills. On March 14, David Shapiro, chief information officer for LVC, presented Garza with his team jersey and an LVC eSports hoodie. In attendance for the presentation were the eSports head coach and the “Rocket League” coach. Like a college athlete, Garza will need to practice a required number of hours per week prior to his start at LVC. He will practice with the team and work with coaches throughout the season. Since eSports is an online competition, Garza will face teams from across the nation with no need for travel. But that is not unusual for him. Garza recently placed in the top 100 in the world in a “Call of Duty” competition. Pictured on front:

kindergarten through second grade. Students participated in an interactive game that invited them to review what they learned from the book by matching meal times on a clock to the work farmers do to produce the foods in those meals. The Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation is an educational charitable organization supported by Pennsylvania Farm Bureau whose mission is the preservation and promotion of agriculture with an emphasis on creating educational programs for children. For more information

Lower Dauphin High School, 201 S. Hanover St., Hummelstown, invites the community’s senior citizens to the school’s annual senior citizen prom on Saturday, April 13. The event, sponsored by the Volunteen club, will have an “Around the World” theme and take place in the high school cafeteria from 1 to 4 p.m. The event will feature classic tunes played by longtime disc jockey Chad Lister. Lister began playing music at the event when he was a student. He is currently a faculty member at the high school. In addition to music and free food at the prom, Lower Dauphin students will provide entertainment. Door prizes will also be available. To register, readers may contact Mrs. Brixius at the high school at 717566-5327.

The Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU), Harrisburg Chapter, welcomes any union member or retiree to attend its monthly meeting on Wednesday, April 17, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the AFSCME Conference Center, 150 S. 43rd St., Harrisburg. The group meets on the third Wednesday of each month for the purpose of empowering participants through education and collaborative action. President Shirley Yates offers a special invitation to labor union members under age 40 to attend the meeting, visit the “CBTU Under 40 Leaders” Facebook page, or visit www.cbtu.org. They are also invited to engage in ways to make political, economic, and social systems more relevant to working families and the community. Readers may call 717-645-8505 for more information.
