Lady Raiders Top CD East, East Pennsboro by Eric Pyles

While not always the case, the game of softball can be pretty simple...see the ball...hit the ball. The Middletown softball team used that simple approach to outscore Central Dauphin East by a 16-10 count on April 22nd. The Lady Raiders rapped out 14 hits, all singles, allowing them to score in five of the seven innings and outlast the Lady Panthers. Alysa Ulrich used three of those singles to pace the offense and drive in four runs total. She enjoyed matching two runs singles in the second and fourth innings that put Middletown up 9-1 and 12-3, respectively. Carly Dupes also had a two-run base hit in the second that made it 6-1 but it was her first inning single that got Middletown rolling, putting the game’s first run on the board.

Hailey Hockenberry matched Dupes’ two hit, three RBI day, with a second inning fielder’s choice and a two-run single to center in the sixth that made it a 15-8 game. Jenna Alford was the beneficiary of the outburst, picking up the win despite allowing 10 runs on 15 hits with four walks and one strikeout. Middletown continued their simple approach a few days later with a 9-6 win over East Pennsboro where the Lady Raiders tallied 10 hits. This time it was Noelle Zimmerman who benefited from the ample run support. The junior righty surrendered eight hits and six runs but four Middletown errors resulted in just two earned runs to go with five strikeouts and no walks. Ulrich managed just one hit this time around but that single to right put Middletown up 1-0 in the top of the first.

The Lady Panthers plated two runs in the first and enjoyed that 2-1 lead until the third. That is when Luvi Balliet crushed a ball to center that cleared the bases and made it a 4-2 game. Another East Penn rally, this one in the third, put them back on top 5-4 where things remained until the sixth when Middletown struck again. Hayli Akakpo-Martin made it a 5-5 game with her one run double while a Lady Panther error put Middletown on top 6-5. Katie Fitzpatrick made her lone hit of the game count, ripping a line drive to center that plated two runs for an 8-5 Lady Raider lead. Ulrich picked up her second and Middletown’s final RBI in the sixth, pushing the lead to 9-5. East Pennsboro did manage one final run in the bottom of the sixth to set the 9-6 final. The Lady Raiders had trouble

getting their bats going one day later, falling to Northern York 12-5 on April 25th. Camilia Martinez had two of Middletown’s five hits with her fifth inning double breaking up the Lady Polar Bear shutout bid by making it a 10-2 game. Jenna Jerome also posted a two RBI game, although without a hit to show for her efforts. Jerome’s damage came in the seventh when a one-out Northern error allowed two Lady

Raiders to score. One batter earlier Akakpo-Martin picked up her lone hit of the game, a double to center that scored Middletown’s first run of the frame. Alford covered all seven innings to take the loss. She finished with one strikeout and three walks. BASEBALL The baseball team saw their sixgame winning streak turn into a two-game slide with losses to

Northern York and East Pennsboro last week. The Blue Raiders survived just five innings in an 11-0 loss to Northern on April 22nd. Brady Keyser got the start and took the loss after allowing all 11 Polar Bears runs on 11 hits. One Middletown miscue did lead to five unearned runs with

Middletown’s Hayli Akakpo-Martin sprints across the plate to add a run to the Raiders’ 16-10 victory at CD East last Monday.

COMMUNITYCOURIER - Northern York County Edition Keyser managing three strikeouts during his three and two-third innings. Mike Tuffy needed two pitches to close out the bottom of the fourth. Scott Ash, Garrett Miller and Ray Truntz accounted for the offense with one single each. The Blue Raiders managed a full six innings on the 24th but the result was a 16-1 loss to East Pennsboro. Keyser managed Middletown’s lone hit of the game which also pushed across their lone run in the fifth inning. Miller got the start and took the loss for covering the first three innings while Tuffy (two innings), Justin Yohn (one-third of an inning) and AJ Stains (two thirds of an inning) all spent time on the mound for the Blue Raiders. The quartet combined for

three strikeouts and 12 walks while allowing 12 hits and those 16 runs. TENNIS The Middletown boy’s tennis team wrapped up their regular season on April 23rd, falling to Camp Hill by a 5-0 final. The tennis season came to an official close on April 25th with the Blue Raiders participation in the MidPenn Flight Tournament. Levi Ettu dropped his first singles match to East Pennsboro’s Nate Stahlman by a 6-0, 6-0 final. Matt Spangler fell by the same score in his Flight Three match-up with Bishop McDevitt’s Michael Brown while Jaden Miller fell to Trinity’s Tommy Hallahan by a 6-1, 6-1 count in second singles. Middletown’s flight one doubles team of Justin Wright and Kordell

Thompson lost in straight sets to McDevitt’s duo of Justin Tang and Nich Minnich 6-1, 6-0. The second doubles team of Seth Smith and Tilak Patel did manage to post the lone Blue Raider set win, unfortunately the pair’s 6-2 second set victory did little to offset Trinity’s Decaln Cudahy and Matt Jones and their wins of 6-2 and 7-5 in the first and third sets. TRACK The boy’s and girl’s track and field teams made their home debut on April 23rd by hosting Trinity. The result was a 76-73 loss for the boy’s and a 124-26 loss for the Lady Raiders. Chris Joseph led the way for Middletown, collecting three solo wins to go with a relay victory. Joseph’s solo victories were split

between the track where he claimed the 110H (15.7) and 300H (43.8) races and the field where his 20-foot jump was tops in the long jump competition. Joseph also joined forces with Edgar Lopez, Richie Sykes and Jose Lopez to win the 400m relay with a time of 45.63. Jose Lopez added two solo wins to the Blue Raider tally, taking the 100m in 11.04 and the 200m with a time of 23.33. Will Brown was the only other Middletown athlete to collect multiple wins, taking the 1600m with a time of 4:41 while his 11:11 in the 3200m gave him the distance sweep. Aiden Sessa cleared nine-feet to take the pole vault while Collin Shaffer secured the final win with a toss of 107-2 in the javelin.

Lower Dauphin High School’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) team of Kelly Barr, Morgan Cummings, Annie Dickinson, Hailey Foreman, and Abbie Natkin recently won first place in the state and also won first place in the people’s choice category at the annual Pennsylvania Invention Convention in State College. The team’s winning project created a tapioca-based plastic to substitute for traditional polymer-based plastics. The product can be used to make beverage can six-pack holders that will be biodegradable and not contribute to plastic pollution in oceans. Plastioca is a biodegradable, renewable, and green alternative to traditional polymer-based plastics. In addition to trial-and-error experimentation to come up with the right tapioca-based formula for their plastic alternative, the team members used 3-D printers to create the molds in which to make the final product. The team is coached by Lower Dauphin science teacher Elizabeth Kirman. By virtue of their state win, the team is

Neighborhood Hi, everyone! I love my dogs. They love me no matter what. They are always so happy to see me, and they love to be with me. They are my biggest fans. And I am theirs. I love you, Chewy, Crunchy, Argus, and Tucker! Thoughts on Dogs “The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his tongue.” Anonymous “Don’t accept your dog’s admiration as conclusive evidence that you are wonderful.” - Ann Landers “If there are no dogs in heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.” Will Rogers “There is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face.” - Ben Williams “A dog is the only thing on Earth that loves you more than he loves himself.” - Josh Billings “The average dog is a nicer person than the average person.” - Andy Rooney “We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It’s the best deal man has ever made.” - M. Acklam “Anybody who doesn’t know what soap tastes like never washed a dog.” - Franklin P. Jones

Chatter

“If your dog is fat, you aren’t getting enough exercise.” - Unknown “My dog is worried about the economy because Alpo is up to $3 a can. That’s almost $21 in dog money.” - Joe Weinstein “Ever consider what our dogs must think of us? I mean, here we come back from a grocery store with the most amazing haul - chicken, pork, half a cow. They must think we’re the greatest hunters on Earth!” - Anne Tyler “Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.” - Robert A. Heinlein “You can say any foolish thing to a dog, and the dog will give you a look that says, ‘My God, you’re right! I never would’ve thought of that!’” - Dave Barry “Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.” - Roger Caras “If you think dogs can’t count, try putting three dog biscuits in your pocket and then giving Fido only two of them.” - Phil Pastoret “My goal in life is to be as good of a person my dog already thinks I am.” - Unknown Happy Birthdays First for this week, a special happy birthday wish goes out to Ernest Minnich of Londonderry Township, my “Poppy”! His 96th birthday is May 6. I hope your day is extra special for you, Poppy! Kevin and I love you

At a towing company: “We don’t charge an arm and a leg. We want tows.” In a nonsmoking area: “If we see smoke, we will assume you are on fire and take appropriate action.” On a maternity room door: “Push. Push. Push.” At an optometrist’s office: “If you don’t see what you’re looking for, you’ve come to the right place.” On a taxidermist’s window: “We really know our stuff.” In a podiatrist’s office: “Time wounds all heels.” On a fence: “Salesmen welcome! Dog food is expensive.” At a car dealership: “The best way to get back on your feet - miss a car payment.” Outside a muffler shop: “No appointment necessary. We hear you coming.” In a veterinarian’s waiting room: “Be back in five minutes. Sit! Stay!” At an electric company: “We would be delighted if you send in your payment. However, if you don’t, you will be.” In a restaurant window: “Don’t stand there and be hungry. Come on in and get fed up.” In the front yard of a funeral home: “Drive carefully. We’ll wait.” At a propane filling station: “Tank heaven for little grills.” Food for Thought “Peace is not the absence of trouble, but the presence of Christ.” - Sheila Walsh

2. Season meat with garlic powder, salt, and pepper. 3. Lightly oil grate. Place tenderloin on grate, and position drip pan under meat. Cook over indirect heat for 30 minutes. 4. Brush tenderloin with barbecue sauce. Continue cooking for 15 minutes, or until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center reads 145 degrees F. Allow pork to rest for 10 minutes. Slice pork, and serve with additional barbecue sauce for dipping. Tip of the Week No matter how clean your dryer’s lint filter looks, you should pull it out and clean it with soap and water every three months! A serviceman told a friend of mine that the dryer sheets we use cause a film to form on the lint filter over a period of a few months. He pulled out the filter, which looked clean, and ran it under water, and a puddle formed on top, not letting any water run through the mesh. So, especially if you use dryer sheets, take out your filter every three months and give it a scrub before replacing it! Your dryer will last a lot longer! Joke of the Week Best Signs Ever: On a plumber’s truck: “We repair what your husband fixed.” At a proctologist’s door: “To expedite your visit, please back in.” Pizza shop slogan: “Seven days without pizza makes one weak.” At a tire shop in Milwaukee: “Invite us to your next blowout.” On a plastic surgeon’s office door: “Hello. Can we pick your nose?”
