Middletown Pushing to Qualify for Districts by Eric Pyles
A quick peek at the District 3 baseball calendar shows the postseason doesn’t officially begin until Monday, May 20th. Unofficially, the postseason has already begun for the Middletown baseball team. Despite a 10-8 overall record which was buoyed by a 3-1 run through a busy second to last week of the regular season, the Blue Raiders find themselves occupying the 14th spot in the District 3-4A rankings, which is a few slots outside the 10-team postseason field. Middletown hopes to make one final push towards the top 10 with wins over Central Dauphin East and Bishop McDevitt to close out their regular season. Middletown’s playoff push began in earnest on with a 7-1 win over Trinity on May 7th. Scott Ash and Mike
Tuffy covered the pitching duties while Cam Peters, with help from Ash and Justin Yohn, carried the offense. Peters finished the game with two hits but his fifth inning blast was the big one. The two-run homerun stretched Middletown’s lead from 30 to 5-0, giving Ash a bit more breathing room. The Blue Raiders earned that three-run lead with a lot of help from Trinity in the top of the fourth. Yohn, who had two singles in the game, picked up his lone RBI with a bases loaded walk for the game’s first run. The lead stretched to 3-0 with an error and a wild pitch from the Shamrocks before the inning was over. Ash helped his cause with a RBI single in the sixth that made it 6-0 while another Trinity error in the seventh put the final at 7-1. Ash surrendered just two hits over six innings of work leading to a single seventh
issuing 10 free passes with just one strikeout. Middletown’s big offensive push came in the fifth where they found themselves in a 6-2 hole. Ash kicked off the five-run frame with a one run double that made it 6-3. Avery Williams followed with a double for a 6-5 game before Miller knotted the game with a single to center that plated Williams. A West Perry wild pitch put Middletown on top by a run before the Mustangs were able to end Middletown’s rally. West Perry pieced a two-run rally together in the top of the sixth that secured the victory. Middletown rebounded nicely with a 13-3 victory over Milton Hershey. Brady Keyser collected the May 9th win, scattering four hits with four walks and seven strikeouts over six innings. Keyser did allow all three Trojan runs but he remained in control thanks to the Blue Raiders scoring in four of the six innings he pitched. AJ Stains closed out the game with a three strikeout seventh. Middletown’s knockout blow came as an eight run sixth but the Blue Raider offense was active from the beginning. Jaxson Senior put the first run on the board with sac fly in the opening frame while Tim Wagner made it 2-1 when he stole home in the top of the fourth. Avery Williams followed a few batters later with the first of this three RBI, this one on a sac
inning run for the Shamrocks. He did issue three walks but added 11 punchouts as well. Tuffy’s one inning line showed a bunch of zeros with the exception of one free pass issued. The playoff push suffered a setback one day later when the Blue Raiders were unable to take advantage of three West Perry errors leading to an 8-7 loss to the Mustangs. Tuffy ended up taking the loss after taking over for Garrett Miller in the third inning. The pair combined to allow 11 hits while

two doubles to drive in two runs, making it an 8-0 game in the sixth. Miller was the final member of the two RBI club, picking up one with a fourth inning single with the second setting the final at 11-0. SOFTBALL The softball team finds themselves in an outside looking in situation, despite having finished their 2019 regular season with a 2-2 week that leaves the Lady Raiders with a 12-8 record. The solid overall record puts Middletown 12th in the not yet final District 3-4A rankings but with no games remaining before the May 15th deadline the Lady Raiders have no way of climbing two spots into the 10-team field. Both of Middletown’s losses last week came to teams inside that 4A field, starting with a 16-1, four inning, loss to top seeded West Perry on May 8th. Middletown’s lone run gave them a short lived 1-0 lead in the top of the first with Katie Fitzpatrick cracking a double that scored Carly Dupes. Jenna Alford and Madison Gipe spilt four innings of work evenly but Alford was on the hook for 12 of 16 runs. Three Middletown errors helped the Lady Mustangs to five unearned runs over the four innings. The second loss came on May 11th with Middletown falling to the current three seed in the 4A rankings, Bishop McDevitt, by a 6-2 final. Gipe covered all seven innings, surrendering 10 hits and one walk to go with seven strikeouts and three earned runs with another three Middletown errors accounting for three unearned runs. The Lady Raiders scored both of their runs in a bottom of the seventh rally that came up short. Dupes opened the rally with a one out single and Fitzpatrick followed with a triple that put Middletown on the board. Sara Dintiman pushed Fitzpatrick across with a fielder’s choice RBI that also counted as the second out. McDevitt ended the rally one batter later for the 6-2 win. Between the two losses, Middletown collected an 11-1 win over Milton Hershey. Noelle Zimmerman allowed just one unearned run and five hits over the five-inning victory, adding three strikeouts and one walk to her resume. Dupes and Fitzpatrick led the way Staff photo combining for three hits and four RBIs Middletown reliever Mike Tuffy while Dintiman enjoyed a two hit, two delivers a pitch during the sev- RBI day. fly to center for a 3-1 lead. A Milton Hershey balk pushed Middletown’s lone fourth inning run across, keeping the Blue Raiders up despite a two run fifth for the Trojans. The game swung on Middletown’s big eight run burst that was fueled by two separate Williams’ run producing hits, a Tony Powell RBI base hit coupled with a handful of Milton Hershey miscues. Williams picked up the first of his two hits of the rally, smacking a double to center to plate Ash who had led off the inning with a single to left. The first of the Trojan miscues made it 6-3 with a bases loaded walk pushing the lead to 7-3. Powell finished off the first time through the batting order with a two-run single that made it 9-3. The final two Milton Hershey miscues allowed Middletown to stretch the lead to 11-3 while Williams finished the rally with a one run single to left to make it a 12-3 game. Middletown tacked on a final run in the seventh with one last gift from Milton Hershey for the 13-3 final. Middletown needed only six innings to closeout Boiling Springs on May 11th, posting an 11-0 win behind six strong innings from Ash. The senior righty allowed one hit during the six innings and issued one walk to go with eight strikeouts on his way to the win. A trio of Blue Raiders finished with two RBI but Williams topped them all despite just one hit. That hit put Middletown up 1-0 in the first while a sac fly in the fourth and a fielder’s choice in the sixth gave Williams three RBI for the game. Ash also finished with one hit, a triple in the first that set the stage for the Williams RBI, but drove in two runs by drawing bases loaded walks in the fifth and sixth innings. batted in thanks to a three-run shot in the fourth inning. Fitzpatrick also enjoyed a homerun but went the solo route with her fourth inning blast, picking up her other hit with a triple in her first at bat of the fourth. Dintiman picked up two RBIs as part of Middletown’s nine run fourth, poking a one out single to center. Camilia Martinez finished the scoring with a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth that kicked in the 10-run rule. Middletown’s other win last week came via a 3-1 final over Trinity on the 6th. Zimmerman covered all seven innings to earn the win, allowing one run on three hits and two walks to go with three strikeouts. Zimmerman also played a part in the two run fifth that busted up the 1-1 deadlock. Zimmerman reached base on an infield hit with the play allowing Martinez to score. Zimmerman moved to second on a wild pitch and after Hayli Akakpo-Martin walked she stole third and then scampered home on another Trinity wild pitch, setting the 3-1 final. Amanda Lee accounted for Middletown’s initial run back in the first with help from a Lady Shamrock error. TRACK The track and field teams finished their regular season and kicked off their postseason all in the span of a few days. The season finale came on May 7th and resulted in an 88-62 loss to East Pennsboro for the boy’s team and a 103-47 loss to the Lady Panthers for the girl’s team. The Harrisburg Area Civic Garden Center recently presented the 2019 Annual Civic Award to Hope Springs Farm, a program for adults with developmental disabilities and autism in Pennsylvania. Hope Springs Farm uses animal and gardening therapy and to give its clients, called “growers,” purpose. Activities include planting, weeding, watering the gardens, feeding the animals, and cleaning up around the barn. Growers also learn a variety of skills, such as cooking with the plants they have grown, canning, baking, making crafts, and shopping. Hope Springs Farm began when founders Nina and Neil Rovner were looking for something meaningful for their daughter, Miriam “Mimi,” to do after she graduated from high school. In 2004 they purchased a small family farm in East
and the first chamber. The next two bills were signed by the youth governor, resulting in five high-schoolers, or 50 percent of the MASD club, being recognized for its legislation. The bills that were signed into law were “Reforming Primary Elections,” authored by Angelina Torres and Stephanie Finsterbush, and “Including a Consent Form for Pregnant Women Who Do/Do Not Wish to Receive an Episiotomy,” authored by Isha Shah, Angelina Torres, and Cassidy Anderson. Seniors Terrance Jefferson, Aayushi Patel, Stephanie Finsterbush, Elijah Smith, Valerie Wilmath, and Jocilyn Koser all received their senior cords from the YMCA Youth and Government Directors for being in the organization for at least two years. Angelina Torres was recognized as the Outstanding Blue Senate Committee Chair. High school club advisers Emily Wolfe and Caitlin Hunt assisted the Press Corps with the production of four successfully printed and reviewed newspapers as well as online content. Middle school adviser Dale Shreiner brought five middle schoolers to the convention, and eighth-grader Natalie Maneval won the Outstanding Page Award. Finally, two high school delegates were chosen by an anonymous committee of adult observers to attend the Conference of National Affairs. Terrance Jefferson will attend the national conference for the second time, and Angelina Torres, Class of 2020, will attend the national conference for the third time.
