Cool spring temperatures can sometimes delay peak strawberry season, but years of experience have meant that the organizers of the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society (HMPS) Strawberry Festival usually hit the sweet spot with the timing of their event. The community is invited to attend the 14th annual HMPS Strawberry Festival on Sunday, June 2, from noon to 4 p.m. at the historic Haldeman Mansion, 230 Locust Grove Road, Bainbridge. A nominal entrance fee will be charged. “It’s very family-friendly, and it’s just a nice place to come and relax and enjoy some good music and food,” remarked HMPS board member Elaine Jackson. Strawberries are, of course, the star of the show. Folks may purchase strawberry shortcake, cheesecake with fresh strawberries and whipped cream, strawberry lemonade, strawberry milkshakes, and more. The rest of the menu will include bratwurst with cooked onions and peppers, hot dogs, chicken corn soup, chili, potato chips, and mint tea and other beverages. “Come with a good appetite for lunch and desserts,” Jackson emphasized. Tours of the Haldeman Mansion will be led by Tina Mark and

Judy Kay Bard throughout the day. Games and activities for children will be part of the fun as well. Live music will be performed by N.E.V., a Campbelltown-based bluegrass band. People are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit on as they enjoy the music and views of the Susquehanna River. Additionally, a silent auction will feature several items from area businesses. Winners will be announced and notified at 4 p.m. If a winner is not present, he or she will be notified by phone. Proceeds from the Strawberry Festival will benefit the ongoing restoration and maintenance of the mansion - particularly, the current efforts to install a heating system in the building in order to be able to host events year-round, Jackson noted. For more details, readers may call 717-426-3794 or visit www.haldeman-mansion.org. Pictured on front:

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Pennsylvania Game Commission, and Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) banded Harrisburg’s newest peregrine falcons on May 17 in an educational event attended by students and teachers. Students from Bethel Springs Elementary School in Delaware County and Immanuel Christian School in Luzerne County traveled to Rachel Carson State Office Building in Harrisburg, home to DEP and DCNR, to watch the banding and learn about the return of the falcon population in the Northeast. Game Commission biologist Art McMorris led a team in bringing the nestlings in from the 15th-floor ledge. He weighed the birds, evaluated their health, and banded them. A student recorded the weight and band code for each. Educator Elaine Gruin from

ZooAmerica North American Wildlife Park in Hershey brought a live adult falcon to demonstrate the features of the species. The peregrine falcon was removed from the federal Endangered Species List in 1999 but remains federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. It is listed as threatened in Pennsylvania and protected under the Game and Wildlife Code. Seventy-two falcons have now hatched since the nest was installed at the Rachel Carson State Office Building in 1996. A livestream of the event was available to the public online. The video recording may be viewed at www.facebook.com/ PennsylvaniaDEP/. Pictured on front:

Motorcycle Month Set The Pennsylvania DUI Association reminds all motorists that May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. Motorcycles are smaller than cars or trucks and consequently are less visible to other operators. Drivers are reminded to exercise additional caution during this time of year as they grow accustomed to the increased presence of motorcycles. Double-checking mirrors, turning, and looking and listening for

the sound of a motorcycle are just some of the things motorists should be doing before executing any type of lane change or entering traffic. Motorcycle operators also bear responsibility for safe operation. They are 28 times more likely to be killed in a crash than other motorists and comprise the highest percentage of impaired drivers killed in crashes, with 37 percent of all motorcycle fatalities being alcohol-impaired.

Soroptimist International of Harrisburg recently celebrated its 2019 annual awards evening by distributing more than $6,000 to local organizations and individuals. At this year’s awards evening, Elyse Erdman was recognized for her volunteer service with Hope Springs Farm by receiving the club’s Violet Richardson Award. Both Erdman and Hope Springs Farm received awards for their work. Soroptimist International is a worldwide organization of women dedicated to helping other women. Members provide service and financial support at the local, region, national, and international levels with the goal of advancing human rights and the status of women. Soroptimist International of Harrisburg members have a mission to use their time, talent, and resources to advance the status of women and children. To accomplish this mission, they establish and support specific projects to address needs locally, regionally, and internationally. The Violet Richardson Award recognizes and honors young women ages 14 to 17 who improve the community and the world through volunteer efforts such as fighting drugs, crime, and violence; cleaning up the environment; and working to end discrimination and poverty. Volunteer actions that benefit women or girls are of particular interest. Although Hope Springs Farm serves to help both men and women with disabilities in the community, the Soroptimist Club recognized Erdman’s unique volunteer work to improve the farm’s community outreach. Box 500 Mount Joy, PA 17552-0500 Central Pennsylvania Food Bank director of development Jennifer Powell (far left) and food bank executive director Joe Arthur (center) accepted a $35,000 grant check from (from left) Josie Corbacio, territory development representative, Highmark Blue Shield; Kathleen McKenzie, vice president of community affairs, Highmark Blue Shield; and Mike Mary, Medicare direct pay sales manager, Highmark Blue Shield. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, headquartered in Harrisburg, has announced it has been awarded a $35,000 grant from Highmark Blue Shield to help fund its senior programs. Through its ElderShare program, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank provides low-income seniors with a fresh, nutritious box of food items every month. In 2018, the program helped more than 7,500 seniors struggling with hunger throughout the food bank’s 27-county service area. The grant from the Highmark Blue Shield will help grow the food bank’s ElderShare program by increasing awareness of its senior programs and providing better analytics on the senior populations in Pennsylvania and the distance some travel to receive their boxes. It will also allow the food bank to continue working with direct service programs like the West Shore Meals on Wheels, which is now delivering boxes directly to seniors in

need so the seniors do not need to leave their homes or send a caretaker or proxy to pick up their box. The Highmark Blue Shield grant will also support funding for increased advocacy with local, state and federal officials. The food bank often reaches out to legislators encouraging them to fund programs that help fight hunger such as the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) for seniors and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The food bank will also increase its outreach to seniors, helping eligible seniors access SNAP. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to reduce hunger in 27 counties across Pennsylvania. Hi, everyone! Memorial Day weekend is over, that means it is summer in my head! I love summer! But spring and summer are almost identical to me anyway … I wear flip-flops and capris, have cookouts, and soak up the sun with both seasons. The only difference to me is the abundance of mosquitoes seems to increase over the real summer months. OK, I guess I love spring better. Clay Balls A man was exploring caves by the seashore. In one of the caves he found a canvas bag with a bunch of hardened clay balls. It was like someone had rolled clay balls and left them out in the sun to bake. They didn’t look like much, but they intrigued the man, so he took the bag out of the cave with him. As he strolled along the beach, he would throw the clay balls one at a time out into the ocean as far as he could. He thought little about it, until he dropped one of the clay balls and it cracked open on a rock. Inside was a beautiful, precious stone! Excited, the man started breaking open the remaining clay balls. Each contained a similar treasure. He found thousands of dollars worth of jewels in the 20 or so clay balls he had left. Then it struck him. He had been on the beach a long time. He had thrown maybe 50 or 60 of the clay balls with their hidden treasure into the ocean waves. Instead of thousands of dollars in treasure, he could have taken home tens of thousands, but he had just thrown it away! It’s like that with people. We look at someone, maybe even ourselves, and we

see the external clay vessel. It doesn’t look like much from the outside. It isn’t always beautiful or sparkling, so we discount it. We see that person as less important than someone more beautiful or stylish or well known or wealthy. But we have not taken the time to find the treasure hidden inside that person. There is a treasure in each and every one of us. If we take the time to get to know that person, and if we ask God to show us that person the way He sees them, then the clay begins to peel away and the brilliant gem begins to shine forth. May we not come to the end of our lives and find out that we have thrown away a fortune in friendships because the gems were hidden in bits of clay. May we see the people in our world as God sees them. I am so blessed by the gems of friendship I have with each of you. Thank you for looking beyond my clay vessel. ~Author unknown~ Happy Birthdays Happy birthday to Tom Oxenford of Royalton! His cake-day is May 29. I hope your day makes you feel like a king, Tom! Recipe of the Week Slow Cooker Whole Cauliflower (Great as a side dish or your main dish!) Ingredients: 1 whole cauliflower, tough greens removed and trimmed on the bottom to sit flat 1 tablespoon ranch dry seasoning mix packet 1 cup vegetable broth 2-3 tablespoons ranch dressing Directions: 1. Place the cauliflower into the pot of a slow cooker. Rub the dry ranch seasoning mix over the surface of the cauliflower. Pour

broth in the bottom of the pot. 2. Following manufacturer’s instructions for the slow cooker, set to cook on high for 4 hours or low for 6 hours. The cauliflower will likely be done before this, but will continue to get more tender as it sits. You’ll know it’s done when you can stick a sharp knife down the center to the bottom of the stem. 3. Right before removing cauliflower, turn on the broiler, and place a rack in the center of the oven. Place cauliflower into a small, shallow dish or baking sheet, and brush the surface with the ranch dressing. Place in oven. Broil for 3-5 minutes, until the top is browned and bubbling. Serve warm, cut into wedges or steaks. Tip of the Week Use your cellphone to take a picture of the insides of your fridge and pantry/cupboard before you go to the grocery so you don’t struggle to remember what you need! (Because if you are like me, you’ll end up with three bottles of soy sauce and four jars of sweet relish.) Fact of the Week Skunks can accurately spray their smelly fluid as far as 10 feet. Joke of the Week A cement mixer and a prison bus crashed on the highway. Police advise citizens to look out for a group of hardened criminals. Food for Thought Be yourself no matter what other people think. God made you the way you are for a reason. Remember, an original is always worth more than a copy! Have a great week, everybody!

as well as children’s activities. Stations will be set up throughout the church highlighting activities and programs such as the youth group, the Sewing Circle, a men’s exercise program, Women of God’s Word (WOW), Lunch in the Park, and more. About five years ago the church board briefly considered moving out of its downtown location because of the seemingly limited options for expansion due to how landlocked the location was. “But the vote from the board was unanimous: No, we are going to stay in town because we’re called to the community,” pastor Conrad Kanagy recalled. “As I watched the congregation envision the addition, I really sensed it was to expand our ministry not just for ourselves, but for the community.” Lead trustee Paul Swanger said from there a plan to simply renovate the existing structure was considered; however, the limited space in the original kitchen along with a few other factors led to the decision to remodel the entire existing building and put on an addition. Along with Swanger, the Building Committee for the project included chair Lester Landis, Elvin Boll, Kate Ebersole, Steve Keener, Ron Kratz, and Don Miller. Seating capacity in the sanctuary was expanded to accommodate 213 people, and the wooden benches were replaced with chairs. The addition included a multipurpose room as well as new

The congregation of Elizabethtown Mennonite Church, represented by trustee Paul Swanger (left) and pastor Conrad Kanagy, invites the community to see the newly remodeled church and its new addition during a drop-in open house from 2 to 5 p.m. on June 2. offices and a ministry room. Aside from all of the physical changes to the building, Kanagy explained that the church recently transitioned from a professional ministry model to calling forth ministers from within the congregation into using their giftings in the areas of worship, outreach, children, youths, and discipleship. Instead of having full-time salaried staff, each designated minister serves parttime and receives a small stipend. “It has created a lot of energy. Our goal is to have a pipeline of ministry so that everyone is involved and mentoring someone,” continued Kanagy. “We’re also working at lowering the barriers between the church and the community.” Kanagy noted that when Elizabethtown Mennonite Church

formed in 1905, the congregation was a unique mix of long-term Mennonites and folks who lived in the town and came to accept Jesus Christ as their Savior during a major revival. “In many ways, that mix is still present today. God uses that mix to keep breathing life and to create a lot of stability,” said Kanagy. “There’s a sense of God’s movement in leading our congregation. It’s an amazing time … where God is moving in miraculous ways.” To learn more about the church, readers may visit https://etown mennonite.com. The church offers weekly Sunday services with classes for people of all ages at 9 a.m. and worship at 10 a.m. All are welcome. Readers with questions about the open house may call Swanger at 717-808-3565.
