DAR Chapter Marks 125th Anniversary The Harrisburg Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) celebrated its 125th anniversary with a luncheon on May 16. Many members of the Pennsylvania State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, state officers, and members of neighboring chapters participated in the events that featured the service of the Harrisburg Chapter. The celebration included the launch of “They Forged Our Path to Freedom,” a book that was created by Harrisburg Chapter members. It includes biographies of more than 60 Revolutionary War patriots, including those related to chapter members and the founding members of the chapter. The first Harrisburg Chapter meeting of the DAR was organized by 12 women in the Harrisburg area on May 19, 1894. From those first 12 women to the hundreds of members throughout the years, each of the Harrisburg Chapter members has worked to honor and promote the history, patriotism, and education within the Harrisburg area. The DAR was founded in 1890 with the mission of promoting historic preservation, education, and patriotism. The Harrisburg Chapter will locally continue to

Five Navy Supply Corps Business/Enterprise Supply Chain Management (BEM) interns recently took part in a three-day workshop at Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Business Systems Center (BSC) in Mechanicsburg. During the visit, the interns also met with Capt. Douglas M. Bridges Jr., commanding officer at NAVSUP BSC. BEM internships serve as the commencement of a career in logistics information technology. The interns receive formal education and earn multiple accreditations in the management of information systems. Chiques Challenge from pg 1 Area residents are invited to join other veteran and amateur athletes as they run and kayak through the annual Chiques Challenge hosted by the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce. The duathlon is slated for Saturday, Aug. 10, and will stage from the Columbia River Park, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. Participants will be transported to Vinegar Ferry Road for the 8:30 a.m. start time. The course takes runners along the river via the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail and through the streets of Marietta. The approximately 4-mile run portion of the event ends at the Marietta Boat Launch. There, runners will take to the river aboard kayaks and finish downstream at the Columbia River Park. Offered again this year is the option to enter as a team, with one participant handling the running portion while the other takes on the kayaking duties. A team of two counts as one entry. This event is held rain or shine and is made possible through the Silver Sponsorships of Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority and Marietta Motors, as well as the support of additional local businesses. Preregistration is required to participate in the Chiques Challenge and is limited to 150 participants. Participants must be age 16 and older. Registrants need to provide their own kayak, but they may contact Shank’s Mare or

Chiques Rock Outfitters for assistance with obtaining kayaks. All participants are required to wear a life vest at all times during the kayaking leg and to be equipped with a whistle. For more information or a registration form, interested individuals may go to www.visitsusquehannavalley.com or call 717-684-5249. Pets are not permitted. Organizers note that although the Chiques Challenge is a timed event and participants may feel competitive, the main focus is to have some fun on and along the Susquehanna River. The Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization serving the communities of Marietta, Wrightsville, and Columbia, as well as the outlying areas. Annual fundraising events such as the Chiques Challenge help to keep the Visitors Center, located at 445 Linden St., Columbia, open year-round as a free service to guests of the region. Pictured on front: Registration is underway for the annual Chiques Challenge, a duathlon scheduled for Aug. 10 that features a run along the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail and the streets of Marietta followed by a kayak route down the Susquehanna River.

We all wish you many more years of a wonderful life together! Hugs! Random Thoughts I just spent the last 60 seconds of my life trying to change my shirt. As I was putting it on, I realized that there were no arm holes or a hole for my head. It was a pillowcase. I just tried to put on a pillowcase.

Return to skillet; stir in beans, corn, tomatoes, chiles, taco seasoning mix and chili powder. Heat to simmering. 2. Stir cream cheese into beef mixture until melted; remove from heat. Stir in 1 1/2 cups of the shredded cheese. Pour into baking dish. 3. Separate dough into 8 biscuits. Cut each biscuit into six pieces; top beef mixture with biscuits. Brush biscuits with melted butter. Sprinkle with remaining 1/2 cup shredded cheese. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until biscuits are golden brown and baked through. Giant Direct is Giant Food Stores’ online grocery service that offers pickup and delivery. Giant Food Stores president Nicholas Bertram and store manager Tim Dinsmore celebrated the opening of the 100th store to offer Giant Direct with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 12 at the Giant store located at 255 S. Spring Garden St., Carlisle. In celebration of this e-commerce achievement, Giant presented a $1,000 donation to Project SHARE, a Carlisle-based organization that provides groceries and other essentials to more than 1,000 local families in need each month. Giant introduced Giant Direct earlier this year to accelerate the company’s e-commerce strategy. In February, the company opened a 38,000-square-foot Giant Direct e-commerce hub in Lancaster that serves as a central shipping location for online delivery orders in the region. The hub also permits customers to place orders on-site via electronic tablets allowing for pedestrian pickup as well as the traditional car curbside pickup. The e-commerce effort has continued over the past five months, as Giant has added Giant Direct to stores across its network. Giant Direct provides customers with a wide assortment of products with the same quality and service available from local Giant stores and Martin’s Food Markets, now combined

Partnership Promotes Safe Medication Disposal Rite Aid and The Rite Aid Foundation have announced that more than 550 medication disposal units across the nation are now searchable on Google Maps, making it easier for people to safely dispose of unneeded or unwanted medications. To find a safe medication disposal unit in a Rite Aid store or a KidCents Safe Medication Disposal Unit in a local police station or law enforcement agency, users can search on Google (including Google Maps on a browser or mobile device) for “medication disposal near me.” Google will show results with the closest Rite Aid medication disposal units for people to safely dispose of their unwanted prescription drugs. The partnership with Google is one of several initiatives Rite Aid has implemented as part of its comprehensive strategy to address prescription drug abuse and misuse. In 2017, The Rite Aid Foundation launched the KidCents Safe Medication Disposal program. The program provides law enforcement agencies in communities served by Rite Aid with free medication disposal units for individuals to safely dispose of expired or unwanted medications. Since its launch, the program has expanded to 18 states. To date, the foundation has partnered with more than 400 law enforcement agencies to make more than 450 units available to customers and communities. In 2018, Rite Aid announced plans to install 100 medication disposal units in stores across the country. In addition to medication disposal units, The Rite Aid Foundation’s KidCents program has made a multi-year commitment to the Prescription Drug Safety program, a digital course about prescription

drug abuse prevention. Developed by EVERFI, the course uses an evidence-based public health approach to empower high school students with the skills and knowledge they need to make safe and healthy decisions about prescription drugs and prevent abuse before it occurs. As a result of The Rite Aid Foundation’s commitment, the Prescription Drug Safety program will be made available to more than 400 high schools in California, Michigan, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington at no cost. Rite Aid also has several in-store initiatives to help address the growing epidemic of prescription drug abuse and misuse. Rite Aid offers DisposeRx packets at all its pharmacies. DisposeRx packets contain a biodegradable powder that, when mixed with water in the prescription vial, dissolves drugs, forming a viscous gel that may be safely discarded in the trash. Rite Aid pharmacists also strive to collaborate on appropriate pain management therapy decisions with patients’ prescribers. All patients with new opioid prescriptions receive required counseling on their prescriptions. Rite Aid also participates in prescription drug monitoring programs and provides ongoing education and training about prescription drug misuse and abuse to its more than 5,000 pharmacists. Additionally, naloxone, the opioid overdose reversal medication, is now available in all Rite Aid pharmacies without a prescription. For more information on the KidCents program, readers may visit www. kidcents.com. Additional information about Rite Aid can be found at www.riteaid.com.
