Community Place On Washington To Launch Capital Campaign Voting Opens For OBOC Selection

Peggy McFarland estimates that for the last 20 years or so, there has been talk of the need for a building that could house all of Elizabethtown’s community service organizations in one place. “Everything is very scattered, and that makes it very difficult for clients to access Community Place on Washington is currently undergoing renovations and will serve as a central everything,” explained location for Elizabethtown’s social service providers. Inviting the community to a launch event on McFarland, who serves Aug. 18 are (from left) Danielle Lindemuth, United Churches of Elizabethtown Area; Melissa as a clinical social Rhoads, Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown; Peggy McFarland, ECHOS; Amy McEvoy, worker and board chair Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care; and Seema Tailor, AmeriCorps VISTA with ECHOS. for Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach for clients, but for years no real estate Area (UCEA) and community members, organizations, businesses, and social Services (ECHOS). One Book, One Community (OBOC) organizers have announced that members of the public may vote for next year’s One Book, One Community book selection from Wednesday, Aug. 1, to Friday, Aug. 31. From a ballot of five books chosen by the book selection committee, participants may vote for the book they would be most interested in reading and discussing in 2019. The selections are “Ordinary Grace” by William Kent Krueger, “Ginny Moon” by Benjamin Ludwig, “A Hope More Powerful Than the Sea” by Melissa Fleming, “Killers of the Flower Moon” by David Grann, and “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas. It is not necessary to read or have read the books to place a vote. The public vote initiative is a way to promote community involvement in the selection of the title. The Pennsylvania Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Network (PAIRWN) hosted a grand opening event, featuring a ribbon-cutting ceremony, on July 18 in celebration of its new office space. At the event, attendees were able to meet the individuals behind the PAIRWN organization, see the new space, and learn about more ways to support immigrant and refugee women in the central Pennsylvania region. PAIRWN was established in 2001 as an organization located in central Pennsylvania working to provide culturally specific services to immigrant and refugee women in the area. For the past 17 years, PAIRWN has worked as a grassroots organization to honor and enhance the lives of refugee and immigrant women in Pennsylvania through education, networking, and empowerment. Since its beginning, PAIRWN has worked out of homes and public spaces, but it now it has its own location at 2101 N. Front St., Governor’s Plaza North 2, Harrisburg. The new office space will be used to provide enhanced and expanded services to immigrant and refugee women who have been victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking in the central Pennsylvania area through support, personalized coaching, and advocacy. PAIRWN also provides services to the broader immigrant and refugee community through education, networking, and referrals. For more information, readers may contact Ho-Thanh Nguyen, president and founder of PAIRWN, at pairwn@pairwn.org.

that celebrated its 25th anniversary this year. The state partnership program evolved from a 1991 U.S. European Command decision to set up the Joint Contact Team Program in the Baltic Region with Reserve component soldiers and airmen. A subsequent National Guard Bureau proposal paired U.S. states with three nations in 1993. The Pennsylvania National Guard and Lithuania were among the first three pairings. Additional exchanges are planned for the future, including a contingent of the 201st rapid engineer deployable heavy operational repair squadron engineers, 193rd Special Operations Wing, Pennsylvania Air National Guard traveling to a range complex in Lithuania later this year. Soldiers assigned to Fort Indiantown Gap range control hosted Lithuanian range experts in Pennsylvania from June 7 to 15 to discuss sustainable range operations and training site management. Sustainable ranges are those that maximize training availability and accessibility of ranges during normal and deployment surges while not over-taxing resources. The contingent of Lithuanian soldiers visited many of the ranges at Fort Indiantown Gap and met with Fort Indiantown Gap staff members from range operations, billeting, environmental, engineers and public affairs. The Lithuanian military has multiple range complexes and training areas that are used for both Lithuanian armed forces and NATO allies like Italy. Similarities between the U.S. and Lithuania include incorporating community activities. Installations in Lithuania are often opened to truffle gatherers, just as Fort Indiantown Gap is opened to outdoor recreation enthusiasts. The visit was part of the Pennsylvania National Guard’s state partnership program

that we can better serve people.” Melissa Rhoads, director of the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, is thrilled about the way the new space will enable her to better serve and direct clients. “Now I’ll be able to say, ‘If you didn’t know about ECHOS, they’re right upstairs,’” Rhoads remarked. A portion of the money needed for the project has already been raised and donated by the UCEA. According to McFarland, approximately $1.5 million is still needed to complete renovations and phase two of the project, which includes adding another building to the property to serve as the ECHOS shelter. The public is invited to attend the launch event for the Community Place on Washington Capital Campaign from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18. Building tours, giveaways, a pork barbecue meal, a cornhole tournament, and the chance to meet Community Place partners will all be part of the evening, along with a special ceremony at 5 p.m. Teams of two are invited to sign up for the cornhole tournament and vie for prizes and the title of Elizabethtown’s Cornhole Champions. Interested individuals may email richc711@comcast.net or call 717-215-2364 to register. Tickets for the pork barbecue sandwich meal are available for a set fee and may be ordered by Saturday, Aug. 11, by emailing communityplaceetown@ gmail.com. Tickets may also be picked up at the following locations: Creations Reimagined, 206 S. Market St., Elizabethtown; B & G Lumber Company, 212 W. High St., Elizabethtown; JB Hostetter and Sons, 1225 W. Main St., Mount Joy; and Brandt’s Farm Supply, 601 E. High St., Elizabethtown. A limited number of walkin meals will be available. Whoopie pies will also be available to purchase. All proceeds will support the Community Place on Washington Capital Campaign. Folks who would like to contribute toward the effort but are unable to attend the event are welcome to donate at www.communityplaceetown.org.

OBOC from pg 1 collaboration among a total of 40 libraries in Cumberland, Dauphin, Perry and York counties. To vote, members of the public may visit www.oboc.org or fill out paper ballots by visiting a participating library. The initiative includes Cumberland County Library System, Dauphin County Library System, Perry County Libraries, York County Libraries, Hershey Public Library, and Middletown
Public Library. The winner of the public vote will be announced in November. Members of the public will be invited to read the chosen book in January 2019, and programs at the public libraries will begin in February, which is designated as both Library Lovers’ Month and Book Lovers’ Month. Multiple copies of the winning title will be available at local public libraries beginning in January 2019.
Church Plans “Shipwrecked” Bible School GracePointe Church of Christ, 4806 E. Harrisburg Pike, Elizabethtown, invites children from kindergarten through fifth grade to its vacation Bible school (VBS), themed “Shipwrecked.” The VBS will be held from Monday, Aug. 13, to Friday, Aug. 17, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Through Bible-learning activities, songs, teamwork-building games, snacks, and more, children will be taught that Jesus rescues them. They will also experience Bible adventures, collect Bible
Memory Buddies, take part in God Sightings, and test science objects that they will be able to take home. There will also be a mission effort to provide seeds to families in Haiti so they can grow food. Each day will conclude with the Sail Away Sendoff at 8:15 p.m., which focuses on what has been learned. Family members and friends are encouraged to attend. The church is located between Elizabethtown and Middletown. For more information, call Sue Akright at 717-599-1720.
The 2018 PA Preferred Junior Baking Cookies, Brownies, Bars Contest is cosponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s PA Preferred program and the PSACF. More than 100 fairs across Pennsylvania will offer cash prizes for the best PA Preferred cookies, brownies, or bars in the Junior Baking Contest. The goal of this contest is to encourage young people across the commonwealth to participate in Pennsylvania’s agricultural fairs by showcasing Pennsylvaniagrown and -produced products in their contest entries. A contest participant must be an individual amateur baker ages 8 through 18 and a resident of Pennsylvania. Entrants may not have won first place in the PA Preferred Junior Baking Contest at any other fair in 2018. For this contest, six cookies, brownies, or bars must be made from scratch and displayed on a doily set on top of cardboard or a disposable plate. At least two ingredients must be PA Preferred products. The ingredients are to be identified as PA Preferred with their brand name in the cookie, brownie, or bar recipe. A comprehensive list of products is available at www.papreferred.com. Judging will be based on flavor (30 percent), texture (25 percent), inside characteristics (20 percent), outside characteristics (15 percent), and creativity (10 percent). Recipes must be submitted with the entries, printed on one side of an 8 1/2by-11-inch paper. Recipes must list all ingredients, quantities, and preparation instructions. The entrant’s name, address, and phone number must be printed on the back of all the pages. The winner will receive a monetary prize and the opportunity to represent the Elizabethtown Fair with his or her entry in the PA Preferred Chocolate Baking Contest at the 2019 Pennsylvania Farm Show. Second- and third-place winners will also receive monetary prizes. The 31st annual 2018 Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest will be held at the Elizabethtown Fair. Entries will be received between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Monday,
Aug. 20, at Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, 996 E. High St., Elizabethtown. The winning pie will receive a cash prize, a crock, and the opportunity to represent the Elizabethtown Fair with their apple pie in the Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest at the 2019 Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg in January. The contest is open to any Pennsylvania resident. Entrants may not have won first place in the Apple Pie Contest at any other fair in 2018. Pies must be submitted in a disposable pie pan. The recipes for the pie and pie crust must be submitted with the entry on an 8 1/2-by-11-inch sheet of paper and list all ingredients, quantities, and preparation instructions. The entrant’s name, address, and phone number must be printed on the back side of all pages. Each pie will be judged on flavor (30 percent); filling consistency, doneness, moistness, and flavor (25 percent); crust - color, flavor, texture, and doneness (20 percent); overall appearance (15 percent); and creativity (10 percent). A variety of fillings in the pies is encouraged, but the pie must include at least 60 percent apples in the filling. The Best of Show apple pie will be selected from the four first-place apple pies. First place will be selected in onecrust and two-crust pies in both the youth and adult divisions. The awards will be presented and the pie will auctioned at the annual baked goods auction on Tuesday, Aug. 21, at 7:30 p.m. A crock will also be awarded to the buyer of the pie. A Best of Show Decorated Cake will be selected from all first-place decorated cakes in the youth and adult divisions entered in the Elizabethtown Fair. The winner will receive a monetary prize and a crock. The award will be presented and the cake will auctioned at the annual baked goods auction on Aug. 21 beginning at 7:30 p.m. A crock will also be awarded to the buyer of the cake. For more details, readers may contact Martene at 717-270-9232 or Morgan at 717-926-6134.

Chatter Hi, everybody! Did you know that today is International Very Good Looking, Darn Smart Woman’s Day? OK, it’s not really, but a friend of mine sent this to me and asked that we pass this message on to someone else who fits that description. And on this IVGLDSW Day, we are asked to remember this motto to live by: Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, a credit card in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming “WOO HOO, what a ride!” Happy IVGLDSW Day! To the Girls Inside every older person is a younger person wondering what the heck happened. (Cora Harvey Armstrong) Inside me lives a skinny woman crying to get out. But I can usually shut her up with cookies. (Unknown) The hardest years in life are those between ten and seventy. (Helen Hayes at age 73) I refuse to think of them as chin hairs. I think
of them as stray eyebrows. (Janette Barber) Things are going to get a lot worse before they get worse. (Lily Tomlin) My second favorite household chore is ironing. My first one being hitting my head on the top bunk bed until I faint. (Erma Bombeck) Old age ain’t no place for sissies. (Bette Davis) The phrase “working mother” is redundant. (Jane Sellman) Thirty-five is when you finally get your head together and your body starts falling apart. (Caryn Leschen) I try to take one day at a time but sometimes several days attack me at once. (Jennifer Unlimited) If you can’t be a good example, then you’ll just have to be a horrible warning. (Catherine Aird) I’m not offended by all the dumb blonde jokes because I know I’m not dumb ... and I’m also not blonde. (Dolly Parton) I have yet to hear a man ask for advice on how to combine marriage and a career.
Tonya Bibb 717-623-2767 tkcondran@gmail.com
(Gloria Steinem) I am a marvelous housekeeper. Every time I leave a man, I keep his house. (Zsa Zsa Gabor) Nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent. (Eleanor Roosevelt) Happy Birthdays Happy birthday to Jake Burger of Royalton! His cake-day is Aug. 8. I hope your day is super exciting, Jake! Happy birthday to Geraldine Side of Royalton! Her cake-day is Aug. 8. I hope your day is at least half as sweet as you, Gerry, then it will be fantastic! Happy birthday to Larry Reeves of Middletown! His cake-day is Aug. 8. I hope your day makes you feel like a king, Larry! Happy birthday to Mackenzie Miller of Londonderry Township! Her cake-day is Aug. 9. I hope your day is full of sunshine, Kenz! Happy birthday to Valerie Baxter Wood of Lower Swatara Township! Her cake-day is Aug. 9. I hope your day is absolutely superb, Val! Miss you, sweetie! Happy birthday to my young cousin Der-

The 2018 Summer at the Tabernacle series will continue on Sunday, Aug. 12, with the service beginning at 7 p.m. in the Tabernacle on the Campmeeting grounds, located on the south side of Route 117 in Mount Gretna. The Rev. Beau Eckert of Calvary Fellowship Church in Lancaster County will share and will be joined by Calvary musician John Frye. The two will lead the worship service with preaching and music, a pattern that has been a hallmark of Campmeeting services in the Mount Gretna grove for 126 years. Attendees should use the Mount Gretna exit from Route 72 and turn left on Route 117, continuing for about 3 miles. Parking is available on the Boulevard lot beside the Mount Gretna Fire Hall.
