Additionally, seven mother-daughter or grandmother-daughter pairs hosted a vacation Bible school for more than 60 of the Rama children. The visiting teams led older Rama children through Bible stories about John the Baptist and the start of Jesus’ ministry, while younger children learned about the seven days of Creation. Volunteers reported that the children asked questions, completed crafts, played competitive games, sang Bible songs, and gave plenty of hugs. They also received candy treats, which they called sugar plums regardless

Brittany’s Hope from pg 1 By Chelsea Peifer

As Elizabethtown resident Naomi Fredlund anticipated the five-year anniversary of her company, Life Changes Realty Group, she envisioned a celebration that could somehow involve all of the business’s clients. One agent suggested doing a largerscale version of the pay-it-forward program that Life Changes operates, and Fredlund loved the idea. Through pay-it-forward, Life Changes real estate agents donate a portion of their commission earned when a deal is closed to the charity of the client’s choice. According to Fredlund, that has led to more than $350,000 being donated to various charities thus far. A fundraising endeavor independent of pay-it-forward, however, would be new for the company. When it came to selecting a recipient, Fredlund immediately thought of Brittany’s Hope, an Elizabethtown-based nonprofit that aims to help orphaned and at-risk children through international special needs adoption grants and humanitarian initiatives. “Being an adoptive mom myself, their mission obviously resonates with me,” said Fredlund. “And another thing I love about Brittany’s Hope is that every penny goes to the children and not to administrative costs.” Fredlund serves on the board of Brittany’s Hope and approached executive director Mai-Lynn Sahd about potential projects that Life Changes could help with. Sahd suggested building a house for a family in need. “It was the perfect opportunity for us as a real estate company - a perfect fit,” Fredlund said. Fredlund and her colleagues set a goal of raising $7,500 - a bit more than the approximately $5,000 needed to build one house through Brittany’s Hope in Vietnam. Through advertising the initiative on social media, sharing with clients, and participating as a team in the Brittany’s Hope 2018 Walk of Love fundraiser, Life Changes raised nearly $15,000. That meant Life Changes was able to contribute toward building homes for two families. In May, Fredlund and her husband and two adult children accompanied a group of Elizabethtown College students and professors, as well as other community members, on a trip to Vietnam to help with the building project. Sahd noted that the organization is judicious in the building process, allowing international volunteers to contribute to some parts of the project while still ensuring that the work is done by local residents so as not to take away economic opportunities. Anyone whom the organization builds a home for contributes something - whether labor, finances, or something else - toward completing the project. One of the homes built was for Miss Lieu, a young widow with two children living in a mud house with a collapsed roof. She had originally approached Brittany’s Hope about needing to place her children in one of the

Instead, Brittany’s Hope was able to build Miss Lieu a new home, complete with a sturdy roof to endure the rainy season as well as a bathroom, which the old house did not have. In spite of the language barrier, Fredlund connected with Miss Lieu and her children. “The hope (Miss Lieu) had was amazing to see. When I was there, she was glowing,” Fredlund shared. “One of the translators, (Le Thi Tu) Hong, said, ‘Their lives are forever changed,’ and that really stuck with me.” Fredlund also got to meet the two children that she sponsors through the Brittany’s Hope child sponsorship program. “It was one of the highlights of my life to see those families,” described Fredlund. In the future, Fredlund would like to return to Vietnam with her colleagues and others interested in helping. “Brittany’s Hope went above and beyond. I’ve been on a lot of trips and very few of them were run as well as Brittany’s Hope,” remarked Fredlund. “My goal is to help other businesses that want to give back.” For more information on Brittany’s Hope, readers may visit www.brittanyshope.org. Registration is open for the 2019 Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and Fun Walk, which is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 14. Apples A few years ago a group of salesmen went to a regional sales convention in Chicago. They had assured their wives that they would be home in plenty of time for Friday night’s dinner. In their rush through the terminal, with tickets and briefcases, one of these salesmen inadvertently kicked over a table that held a display of apples. Apples flew everywhere. Without stopping or looking back, they all managed to reach the plane in time for their nearly missed boarding. All but one! He paused, took a deep breath, got in touch with his feelings, and experienced a twinge of compassion for the girl whose apple stand had been overturned. He told his buddies to go on without him, waved goodbye, and told one of them to call his wife when they arrived at their home destination and explain his taking a later flight. Then he returned to the terminal where the apples were all over the terminal floor. He was glad he did. The 16-year-old girl was totally blind! She was softly crying,

I hope your day is packed full of fun, Giuliana! Happy birthday to Barry Wonder of Lower Swatara Township! His cake-day is Aug. 19. I hope your day is full of sunshine and happiness, Barry! Happy birthday to Wendy Loranzo of Middletown! Her cakeday is Aug. 20. I love when you catch up to me! LOL! I hope your day is as awesome as you, Wendy! Happy birthday to Gary Rux of

Lower Swatara Township! His cake-day is Aug. 20. I hope you and your beautiful daughter have a great week of celebrating your birthdays, Gary! Random Thought Waffles are just pancakes with abs. Recipe of the Week Easy Berry Bars Ingredients: 1 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder 3 cups plain flour 1 cup shortening 1 egg 1 pinch salt 1 pinch ground cinnamon 4 cups raspberries 1/2 cup white sugar, extra 3 teaspoons cornflour Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease one 9-by-12-inch pan. 2. Combine 1 cup of the sugar with the flour, baking powder, salt, ground cinnamon, shortening, and egg. Dough will be crumbly. Pat half of the dough into the prepared pan. 3. Combine the remaining 1/2 cup sugar, the cornflour, and the berries. Place mixture over dough in pan. Crumble the remaining dough over the tops of the berries. 4. Bake for 45 minutes or until the top is slightly brown. Cool before cutting into bars. Tip of the Week Place a layer of waxed paper on top of kitchen cupboards to prevent grease and dust from settling. Switch out every few months to keep them clean. Joke of the Week Q: There is a one-story house where every thing is red. The carpet is red, the TV is red, the couch is red, the cabinets are red, the toilet is red, the cups are red, the computer is red, the walls are red, the blankets are red, the pillows are red, and the sink is red! So, what color is the staircase? A: There isn’t one! It’s a onestory house. Food for Thought No matter how hard the situation may be, I still manage to smile and be happy, because I know God will never give up on me. Have a great week, everybody!

tears running down her cheeks in frustration, and at the same time helplessly groping for her spilled produce as the crowd swirled about her, no one stopping and no one to care for her plight. The salesman knelt on the floor with her, gathered up the apples, put them back on the table and helped organize her display. As he did this, he noticed that many of them had become battered and bruised; these he set aside in another basket. When he had finished, he pulled out his wallet and said to the girl, “Here, please take this $40 for the damage we did. Are you OK?” She nodded through her tears. He continued on with, “I hope we didn’t spoil your day too badly.” As the salesman started to walk away, the bewildered blind girl called out to him, “Mister...” He paused and turned to look back. She continued, “Are you Jesus?” He stopped in mid-stride, then slowly he made his way to catch the later flight with that question burning and bouncing about in his soul: “Are you Jesus?” Do people mistake you for Jesus? That’s our destiny, is it not? To be so much like Jesus that people cannot tell the difference as we live and interact with a world that is blind to His love, life, and grace. If we claim to know Him, we should live, walk, and act as He would. Knowing Him is more than simply quoting Scripture and going to church. It’s actually living the Word as life unfolds day to day. You are the apple of His eye even though we, too, have been bruised by a fall. He stopped what He was doing and picked you and me up on a hill called Calvary and paid in full for our damaged fruit.

Giant Pilots Enhanced Rewards Program Giant Food Stores has announced it is piloting a new way for its customers to increase their savings through personalized offers on products they already buy with the new Choice Rewards program. An enhancement to its current Gas Extra Rewards program, Choice Rewards brings customized savings and rewards to customers via the Giant or Martin’s app. By leveraging smartphone technology, Giant aims to provide relevant rewards to their participating customers. Choice Rewards is now available in a select pilot market, and it will roll out by the end of the year. Just like they do in Giant’s current program, customers participating in the pilot earn points on qualifying purchases at the rate of one point for every $1 spent. New through Choice Rewards, they will also be able to earn

points through targeted “bonus earn” offers. When it comes time to redeem points, customers can either redeem their points for discounts on gas - with 100 points equaling a $0.10 discount per gallon up to 25 gallons or choose among new offers such as converting points to dollars to save directly on groceries. In addition to viewing their personalized offers and rewards earnings on the app, customers can load digital coupons, activate Deli Order Ahead, or place a grocery order with Giant Direct. In the app, customers can track their earning progress while managing their points and rewards. Points earned expire on the last day of the month following the month in which they were earned. For more information about Giant or Martin’s, readers may visit the https://giantfood stores.com or https://martinsfoods.com.

Cordier Auctions and Appraisals will hold a Fine and Decorative Arts Auction at 1500 Paxton St., Harrisburg, on Saturday, Aug. 17. Bidding will begin at 10 a.m. Items crossing the block will include those from 18th-century collector Edward Greey, six pieces of early coin-op, and a Snow Hill Cloister watercolor. The Snow Hill Cloister piece is a recently discovered allegorical watercolor by Obed Snowberger. The Snow Hill Cloister, founded in Franklin County in 1798 as an offshoot of the Ephrata Cloister in Lancaster County, flourished until the Civil War. Snowberger, the last celibate brother, died in 1895. This watercolor was purchased at the sale of his estate in 1896. Found 50 years ago by a local collector, it is now being offered at public sale for the first time in more than 100 years. Greey opened an art gallery in New York City in 1868, and this gallery was credited with creating a new appreciation for Japanese art in America. Included in the collection of his items is a scroll by Nonkoku and Nanho Osawa painted on a piece of Mrs. Greey’s wedding gown. A six-piece collection of coin-op includes a Mills Violano Virtuoso and a Wurlitzer LX
