Hi, everyone! Wow. Time is going too fast. This coming weekend is the final weekend for August 2018. The weekend after that will be September. September is my baby boy’s birthday month. My baby boy is going to be 30 years old. Wow. See what I mean? Memos From Your Child Don’t spoil me. I know quite well that I ought not to have all I ask for. I’m only testing you.

Don’t be afraid to be firm with me. I prefer it, it makes me feel more secure. Don’t correct me in front of people if you can help it. I’ll take much more notice if you talk to me in private. Don’t make me feel that my mistakes are sins. It upsets my sense of values. Don’t be too upset if I say “I hate you. It isn’t that I hate you, but only that I need your attention. Don’t protect me from consequence. I need to learn the hard way. Don’t take too much notice of my small ailment. Sometimes they get me the attention I want. Don’t nag. If you do, I shall have to protect myself by appearing deaf. Don’t make rash promises. Remember that I feel badly let down when promises are broken. Don’t forget that I cannot explain myself as well as I should like. This is why I’m not always accurate. Don’t be inconsistent. That completely confuses me and makes me lose my faith in you. Don’t put me off when I ask you questions. If you do, you will find that I stop asking and seek my information elsewhere. Don’t tell me my fears are silly. They are terribly real and you can do much to try to understand. Don’t ever suggest that you are perfect or infallible. It gives me too great a shock when I discover that you are neither. Don’t ever think it beneath your dignity to apologize to me. An honest apology makes me feel surprisingly warm to you. Don’t forget that I can’t thrive without lots of love. But I don’t need to tell you all the time, do I? Don’t forget how quickly I am growing up. It must be very difficult for you to keep pace with me but please try. magnificent, Evelyn! Random Thought I didn’t get this body from just lying around, you know. I also eat a lot of chips and cookies. Recipe of the Week Ground Beef and Rice With Cheese Super easy and delicious! Ingredients: 1 cup white rice 1 cup water 1 pound ground beef 3 10.75-ounce cans condensed tomato soup 3 tablespoons chili powder 8 slices processed cheese food (such as Velveeta) Directions: 1. Bring the rice and water to a boil in a saucepan. Reduce heat to medium-low; cover, and simmer until the rice is tender and the liquid has been absorbed, 20 to 25 minutes. 2. Preheat an oven to 400 degrees F. Grease a 1-quart baking dish. 3. While the rice is cooking, heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and stir in the ground beef. Cook and stir until the beef is crumbly, evenly browned, and no longer pink. Drain and discard any excess grease. Stir in the condensed tomato soup and chili powder; cook until heated through. 4. Spread 1/3 of the rice into the bottom of the prepared baking dish and cover with 1/3 of the ground beef mixture. Place 2 slices of processed cheese over the meat, then cover with 2 more layers of rice and meat. Arrange the remaining 6 slices of cheese over the top. 5. Bake in the preheated oven until the casserole has heated through and the cheese is bubbly and browned, about 20 minutes. Tip of the Week If you want to test baking powder for freshness, add a teaspoon to a glass of warm tap water. If it does not fizz, the baking powder is too old and should be tossed. Fact of the Week X’s symbolize kisses because in ancient days, when few people knew how to write, they would simply sign an X to show their agreement, then kiss the mark to emphasize their sincerity. Joke of the Week “Do you believe in life after death? the boss asked one of his employees. “Yes, sir, the new recruit replied. “Well then, that makes everything just fine, the boss went on. “After you left early yesterday to go to your grandmother’s funeral, she stopped in to see you. Food for Thought A bad attitude is like a flat tire. You can’t go anywhere until you change it. Have a great week, everybody!

Rail Car Hazmat Training Posted

Students Study Conservation

As more and more rail traffic involves the transportation of valuable cargo and hazardous materials, the Rural Domestic Preparedness Consortium (RDPC) will provide critical training to help rural first responders, government administrators, and emergency managers in the Lebanon area respond more effectively to a freight rail car incident. RDPC will deliver a free Department of Homeland Security (DHS)-certified course, AWR 147 - Rail Car Incident Response, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, at Lebanon County Fire School, 833 Metro Drive, Lebanon. The course will educate those on the frontlines of defense in their community on what to do in the event of a rail car incident involving hazardous materials. The eight-hour, instructor-led course will introduce the rural responder community to basic rail car design and construction features as well as damage assessment

In June and July, graduate students from Miami University’s Project Dragonfly were scheduled to travel to Africa, Asia, Australia and the Americas to engage in action projects on vital human and ecological issues. Sarah Goodman of Hummelstown, a new master’s student in the Global Field Program (GFP) from Miami University’s Project Dragonfly, traveled to Baja in July. Goodman studied desert and marine landscapes through ecological and social field methods. Goodman works as a teacher at Lower Dauphin School District. More information about Goodman’s course can be found at www.earth expeditions.org. Taylor Baker of Harrisburg, a new master’s student in the Global Field Program (GFP) from Miami University’s Project Dragonfly, traveled to Belize in July. Baker studied coral reefs, manatees, howler monkeys, jaguars and other wildlife while learning the methods communities are using to sustain them. Baker works as a carpenter’s apprentice for Union. More information about Baker’s course can be found at www.earth expeditions.org. Project Dragonfly’s Earth Expeditions graduate courses engage people in firsthand educational and scientific research at critical conservation field sites in Africa, Australia, Asia and the Americas. Dragonfly is located in the department of biology at Miami University, a state university in Oxford, Ohio. Miami was established in 1809 and is listed as one of the eight original Public Ivies. To learn more about Project Dragonfly, readers may visit www.facebook.com/PrjDragon fly.

Upon completion of the course, participants will be better prepared to respond to a freight car incident without endangering the health and safety of the responders and the environment. Registration is required. The registration deadline is Saturday, Aug. 25. To register, readers may visit www.train. org/pa/welcome. For information regarding the facility, readers may contact Train PA at 717-651-2701 or grahess@pa.gov. Although no formal prerequisites are required to attend this course, it is highly recommended that participants have a working knowledge of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) before attending.
