Lions John Lerch and Glen Leib emphasized that, as always, the purpose of the show is to raise funds for the various causes that the Lions support in the Elizabethtown community. This year, the club has a new partnership with the Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) Mini-THON to raise funds for Four Diamonds, which covers medical expenses not paid for by insurance for pediatric cancer patients at Penn State Children’s Hospital. Aside from Four Diamonds, Lerch said that the Elizabethtown Lions’ primary charitable focuses for this year are the Elizabethtown and Rheems fire departments, Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, United Churches of Elizabethtown, Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS), scholarships for EAHS graduating seniors, and Elizabethtown Area School District. Lions Club members also offer support for people in need of vision services and diabetes prevention and control services, as Lerch noted that diabetes is one of the leading causes of blindness in the nation. At the show, club members will present donations to the Rheems VFD, Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, and United Churches of Elizabethtown. Joke of the Week A farmer in the field with his cows counted 196 of them, but when he rounded them up he had 200. Tip of the Week Alternatives to Common Baking Ingredients: Butter. Margarine or shortening work as well as butter in most cakes and quick breads, although the finished product may look and taste a little different from one made with real butter. You can also add artificial butter flavor improve the taste if you’re using unflavored shortening. Self-rising flour. If you’re out of self-rising flour (or if you just don’t keep it on hand), replace it with plain flour sifted with baking powder. For 1/2 cup of self-rising flour, substitute 1/2 cup of plain flour plus 1 level teaspoon of baking powder. Chocolate. For 1 ounce of baking chocolate, mix 3 level tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder with 1 tablespoon softened butter, margarine, or vegetable oil. Milk. For 1 cup whole milk, use 1/2 cup evaporated milk plus 1/2 cup water. You can also rehydrate dry powdered milk as

directed on your package of powdered milk and use that in place of regular milk. Baking powder. To make up 1 teaspoon of baking powder, use 1/4 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda, 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar, and 1/2 teaspoon ground rice. Or use 1/4 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda plus 1/2 cup yogurt or sour cream (omit 1/2 cup of some liquid from the recipe). Sugar. For 1/2 cup of granulated sugar use 1 cup honey, golden syrup, or corn syrup and reduce the liquid in your recipe by 1/2 cup. Dark brown sugar. For 1/2 cup of dark brown sugar combine 3/8 cup white sugar and 2 tablespoons molasses or black treacle. Keep in mind, however, that syrup, honey, and treacle will make your baking heavier than regular brown sugar. Eggs. If you have spare yolks in the refrigerator (after having used the whites for a sorbet or meringue, for example), use 2 yolks mixed with 1 tablespoon water to substitute for a whole egg. If you have egg whites in the fridge left over, you can mix 2 whites with 4 tablespoons of vegetable oil.

Food Bank Receives Grant

ARRIVING LATE?

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has received a $5,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation to help fight hunger in the Food Bank’s 27-county service area through Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) application assistance. With this grant, the food bank will scale access to SNAP among eligible households, with particular emphasis on reaching seniors. SNAP is a federal nutrition program dedicated to helping millions of people who face hunger. According to the food

bank, SNAP improves food security, offers benefits that enable families to purchase healthier foods, and frees up household resources that can be used for preventative services and needed medical care. The food bank says that more than 15 percent of Americans eligible for SNAP currently do not receive this benefit, and seniors are disproportionately affected by food insecurity and barriers to SNAP access. Among seniors, 58% of eligible individuals are not enrolled in SNAP.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s team of SNAP experts provides assistance and helps individuals determine their eligibility for SNAP benefits. Team members are available to assist in the application process through the bilingual Food Stamps Helpline at 877-999-5964. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s programs that reach more than 136,000 individuals each month include ElderShare, MilitaryShare, Fresh Express, BackPack, Kids Café, Summer Pantries and Summer Feeding.

Last year, the food bank provided nearly 45 million meals and distributed more than 11 million pounds of produce from its locations in Harrisburg and Williamsport. Walmart and the Walmart Foundation provide donations of both food and funds to the Feeding America nationwide network of 200 food banks. For more information about the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, readers may visit www.centralpafoodbank.org or call 717-564-1700.

AACA Library Receives Donation The AACA Library and Research Center in Hershey has announced that William T. “Tom” Gerrard has donated his extensive literature collection to the library. The library has cared for the collection since 2013, calling it the Gerrard Classic Auto Literature Collection. Gathered during a 35-year span, the collection has included many of the rarest items known to the hobby covering the 1950s and 1960s. Items include sales catalogs, brochures, color and fabric samples, shop manuals, wiring diagrams, dealer binders, filmstrips, slides and more. The formal transfer of ownership occurred in early 2019. Gerrard has had a long-standing relationship with the AACA

Library and Research Center, which is why he originally offered the large collection to the center on a long-term loan. Each item in the Gerrard Classic Auto Collection has been digitized, cataloged and made readily accessible in hard copy or electronic format at the AACA Library and Research Center. The library, located at 501 W. Governor Road, Hershey, is free and open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays. The donation will further the AACA Library’s mission of connecting people with primary sources pertaining to automotive history. For more information, readers may visit www.aacalibrary.org.

Seventy Pennsylvania National Guard (PNG) soldiers and airmen competed with rifles and pistols in multiple courses of fire to determine the best marksmen during the Governor’s Twenty match at Fort Indiantown Gap recently. Created in 1968, the Governor’s Twenty is a state-level National Guard award presented annually to the top 20 shooters in a state. Through this fierce competition, participants have the opportunity to test marksmanship skills and weapon systems in a battlefocused environment. The Army and Air Force both recognize the state award, and it is reflected on the service members’ official personnel record. The top 20 scorers were awarded the embroidered Governor’s Twenty tab and a certificate to identify them as being outstanding marksmen. Events were varied and included multiple distances and shooting positions. The competition was conducted by the PNG Individual Training Branch, Marksmanship Training Unit. The 2019 Governor’s Twenty recipients are Senior Airman Nicholas Yackovich, Harrison City

maximum of $5,000. MDA has received thousands of dollars in grant money over the years, and these funds are used to improve the quality of life of more than 1,000 people touched by neuromuscular disease in central Pennsylvania. Grant money received sends children to camp, helps provide support services, and funds research to find a cure and transform the lives of children and

adults with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related muscle-debilitating diseases. Recent major medical and scientific advancements in neuromuscular disease research and care include the development of seven new drugs for treatment and, most recently, AveXis’ Zolgensma, the first gene therapy for pediatric patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Funds

raised also help more than 20 area children attend a week at MDA Summer Camp at no cost to their families. Additionally, Multidisciplinary Medical Clinics are held at Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, and an equipment loan closet and bimonthly support groups are available for families. For further information regarding MDA, readers may contact Miles Fishel at 717-659-7487.
