In lieu of a sweet 16th birthday celebration a few years ago, Sayali Yoder opted to invite friends and family to join her in participating in the Brittany’s Hope Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and Fun Walk. Sayali’s parents received one of the very first adoption grants awarded by Brittany’s Hope, an Elizabethtown-based nonprofit committed to aiding orphans in crisis around the world. Born without hands and feet, Sayali went through more than 26 surgeries and lived in an orphanage until being adopted at age 3. Today, she is determined to give back to the organization that she says helped her to become who she is. Sayali faithfully trained for the 5K by taking daily walks with her boxer, Athena, and set a fundraising goal of $1,000 - only to surpass that goal by raising more than $5,000. The race itself

proved to be a challenge, as her prostheses are not designed for far distances or bumpy terrain, but she crossed the finish line. Now a college sophomore majoring in video production, Sayali plans to once again participate in the Brittany’s Hope Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and raise funds to help children in need. This year’s Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and Fun Walk is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. The family-friendly event will include a 5K, a fun walk, pony rides, an inflatable obstacle course for children, games and activities, giveaways, and food. Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director of Brittany’s Hope, encourages people to join Sayali at the event or to consider supporting her cause if they are unable to participate or attend. The organization has set a fundraising goal of $75,000 for this year’s event, the 15th annual. Through adoption grants, Brittany’s Hope has united more than 1,300 children with special

Random Thought Losing weight doesn’t seem to be working, so I’m going to concentrate on getting taller. Recipe of the Week Easy Apple Fritters Ingredients: 2-3 peeled apples (1 1/2 cups when diced) 1 cup flour 1/4 cup sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/3 cup milk 1 egg 2 tablespoons cinnamon sugar mixture (2 tablespoons sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon) Oil for frying the fritters Powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk for glaze (optional) Directions: 1. Combine the flour, sugar, salt and baking powder, and whisk until combined. 2. In a small bowl, whisk the milk and egg until combined. Add into dry ingredients and mix until just incorporated. 3. Toss the diced apples with the cinnamon sugar and dump the mixture into the batter. Stir just a bit to move the apples around. 4. Heat oil to 370 degrees. 5. Fry heaping spoonfuls (or use a cookie scoop) of the batter, being sure to include apples in each scoop, until golden brown (about 2 to 3 minutes). If frying in a sealed fryer, shake basket around just a bit during frying to ensure even rotation of cooking. If cooking in an open frying pan, flip fritters to ensure even cooking. 6. Once fritters are removed from fryer, place them on a cooling rack with paper towels under to catch any drips. 7. If rolling in cinnamon and sugar, do so as soon as fritters can be handled. If

sprinkling with powdered sugar or dipping the fritters in a simple glaze, allow them to cool a bit more. To make the glaze, combine 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar, a splash of vanilla and 1 to 1 1/2 tablespoons of milk. Stir until smooth and drizzle over fritters or dunk fritters. If dunking fritters, allow them to set for a few minutes and then enjoy; they will not stay fresh long. Fritters are best enjoyed soon after they are made, while they are still warm. For best results, fry in batches of three or four. Try using a small cookie scoop to make dropping the batter into the oil easy. Tip of the Week How to soften butter quickly: 1. Take a stick of butter (or the amount of butter needed for the recipe) and place it in a zipper storage bag. 2. Fill a bowl or container with warm water. Place the butter in the storage bag in the warm water. 3. In a few minutes you will have soft butter that is easy to spread or use in a recipe. The key to getting the butter soft but not melted is to use warm water, not hot. Heating the water in the microwave is not recommended because the water will be too hot and will melt the butter. Warm tap water will be hot enough to soften the butter quickly. Joke of the Week A husband and a wife sit at the table, having dinner. The woman drops a bit of tomato sauce on her white top. “Ugh, I look like a pig!” she says. The man nods and says, “And you dropped tomato sauce on your top!” Food for Thought God cares a lot more about who we are, and who we are becoming, than about who we once were. Have a great week, everybody!

Hobby Greenhouse Club Will Meet The Central Pennsylvania chapter of the Hobby Greenhouse Association will hold a meeting on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 9 a.m. at the Lower Allen Township Building, 2233 Gettysburg Road, Camp Hill. Lisa Rocuskie will present the program “Dare TB Tick Aware.” A brief business meeting will follow. The program will be free and open to the public. For more information, readers may call June Eckert at 717766-3492.

Blood Drive Scheduled The Columbia Lions Club and the Columbia-Middletown Elks 1074 will sponsor a blood drive on Monday, Sept. 9, from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Columbia Borough Fire Department, 10th and Manor streets. Readers may call 1-800-REDCROSS or visit www.RedCross Blood.org and enter “Columbia,” to schedule an appointment.

Moores To Speak At Vietnam Round Table Meeting The Central Pennsylvania Vietnam Round Table will meet on Thursday, Sept. 12, at 7:30 p.m. at Vietnam Veterans of America, Michael J. Novosel MOH Chapter 542, 8000 Derry St., Harrisburg. Following a brief business meeting, Doug and Debby Moore of Haymarket, Va., will discuss their experiences in Vietnam. Doug was a medevac pilot and Debby ran recreation centers for enlisted personnel. Doug was an ROTC graduate from Arkansas State University in 1959. During his first tour,

from 1964 to 1965, he served with the 57th Medical Detachment, based in Saigon. His second tour, from 1968 to 1969, saw him commanding the 159th Medical Detachment at Cu Chi, supporting the 25th Infantry. During his 30 years of service, Doug received numerous awards, including the Distinguished Service Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Air Medal. He has written a memoir about his time in Vietnam. Debby graduated from San Francisco State University and

joined the Army’s Special Services Program that employed woman college graduates to run recreation centers for enlisted personnel. At 21, she became the youngest woman to run a center in Vietnam. After serving two tours, she ran recreation services for the city of Los Altos, Calif. The meeting is open to the public, though freewill donations will be accepted. For more information, readers may contact Richard Burton at 717-545-2336 or centralpavietnamrt@verizon.net or visit www.centralpavietnam roundtable.com.

Let In The Light Add Safety To Your Basement Specializing in window wells & covers, adapter covers for existing metal, brick, concrete or wooden wells, hot beds for planting and vinyl screen doors (pet screen available)

Autumn is marked by colorful foliage and declining temperatures. Once leaves reach peak color, they fall from branches and collect on lawns, necessitating cleanup projects. For homeowners with large yards, such projects can be tiring and time-consuming. However, there are ways to make leaf cleanup easier. One of the simplest ways to clean up leaves is to reach for a lawn mower rather than a rake. The mower will cut leaves down to smaller sizes, creating mulch. The potential benefits of leaving mulched leaves on a lawn were studied by turfgrass specialists at Michigan State University (MSU) beginning in the 1990s. While the researchers noticed an obvious leaf residue on the lawn after mulching, they noted that it only remained for a few days. Eventually, the tiny pieces sifted down into the lawn, ultimately serving to control future weed growth while also providing the lawn with essential nutrients. Over time, researchers noted that homeowners who mulched rather than raked their leaves needed less fertilizer to give their lawns a green look in spring, saving homeowners the effort and cost associated with fertilizing. Researchers also noted that decomposing pieces of leaves cover up bare spots between turf plants, which have traditionally proven to be excellent spots for weed seeds to germinate. In fact, MSU notes that homeowners can expect a nearly 100 percent decrease in dandelions and crabgrass after mulching leaves for

Wiring Woes: The Dangers Of Old Wiring Old homes can be charming and contain architectural elements not often seen in many modern housing developments. But what older homes may have in design appeal, they sometimes lack in updated features. While cosmetic changes are not necessarily difficult, one area of concern in historic homes - and sometimes even in houses built only 40 or 50 years ago - is outdated wiring. Over time, wiring can be compromised through simple aging, pest infiltration, weather, or other conditions. Deteriorated wiring can present a shock hazard and also a serious fire hazard, warn the home renovation experts at The Spruce. Furthermore, the home improvement site This Old House advises that the amperage of old wiring may not be able to meet the needs of all the devices

used in modern homes, overpowering the circuits. This strain can cause breaker blowouts and other problems, such as overheated wires that may spark and cause fires from within the wall. Wiring often falls into the “out of sight, out of mind” category. Homeowners may make allowances for inadequate electrical systems, such as running extension cords or using multiplug connectors to increase their

be collected in a mower bag and added to garden beds or compost piles. Of course, mulching is not the only way to deal with fallen leaves. For those who prefer manual raking, select a rake with tines that will not skewer the leaves in the process. Large rakes also can make faster work of gathering

just three years. Depending on the type of mower being used, up to six inches of leaves can be mulched at a time. Push mowers can handle smaller amounts, though they can still be as effective as ride-on mowers. Davey, a lawn and landscape solutions service, says that mowed leaves also can

leaves into piles. The home improvement resource The Family Handyman advocates for the use of a lawn sweeper. This is a manual device that has a rotating sweeping brush that gathers up lawn debris and leaves into an attached hopper bag. Like mowed leaves, the bag can be emptied into a compost pile or distributed where needed. Raking leaves onto a large tarp is another option. Once it is full, the tarp can be taken to the curb for leaf collection or used as a funnel to put leaves into a gardening bag or another appropriate receptacle. Leaf blowers remain a fast option for cleaning up yards, but they require electricity or gas and can be noisy. Still, they are a popular choice for large landscapes or when quick work needs to be made of leaf cleanup. Leaves will fall in autumn, but thankfully homeowners have various methods at their disposal to tame the mess.

wiring capacity. However, they may not be diligently keeping on top of upgrades needed to stay safe. Confirming that a home’s electrical system is safe is a necessary part of home maintenance. Those who have not already done so should schedule an inspection with a licensed electrician to go over their home’s wiring. The electrician can determine if any areas pose a safety risk or do not conform to local code requirements and the National Electrical Code. Failure to meet code requirements can lead to difficulty obtaining permits to make other home renovations or difficulty selling a home later on. The electrician can also go over improvements that can enhance safety and function. Installing additional outlets, including GFCI outlets in kitchens and bathrooms, may be part of the plan, as well as rewiring a fuse box or circuit panel to allow for better flow of power around the house. Frayed wiring or underinsulated wiring also may need to be replaced. Owners of old homes should recognize possible electrical system dangers that require attention. Plus, because electrical codes change quite frequently, it is always in a homeowner’s best interest to work with a qualified electrician to keep wiring inspected and up to date.
