People of all ages are invited to support the youths in the local community at the annual Cornerstone Youth Center 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, Sept. 29, at Masonic Village, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown. “As a runner it’s a really great event to come back to every fall,” said Jesse Myers, who has been participating in the event since it began six years ago. Myers and Fred Garber shared about their experiences in the video “A Tale of Two 5Kers,” which may be viewed at www.cornerstoneetown.org/5K. Garber ran the 5K for the first time last year. “I just wanted to try it and see if I could get it done,” said Garber, adding that he was the last one to cross the finish line, but that was OK. Seeing all of the people who came together to support Cornerstone was encouraging to Garber, who was involved with the ministry when it first began. “Come enjoy and support the ministry as you do the 5K,” Garber said. To register in advance, interested
individuals may visit www.corner stoneetown.org/5K. Those who register by Wednesday, Sept. 19, will receive a T-shirt. Discounted rates are available for youth groups, such as churches or sports teams. To receive special group registration rates, readers may call 717367-0000, ext. 1. Folks who may not be able to run or walk the course but would still like to support Cornerstone can sponsor a participant by clicking on the “Crowdrise” link at www.cornerstoneetown.org/5K and following the instructions. Cornerstone associate director Laurie Shepler noted that this feature was added this year at the request of numerous individuals. Race packet pickup will be offered from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, at Cornerstone Youth Center, 95 S. Wilson Ave., Elizabethtown. Registration and race check-in will be available on the day of the race from 7 to 8:30 a.m. at Masonic Village. Runners will take off at 9 a.m. The start and finish lines will be located just behind the Sycamore Square Apartments at the entrance of Masonic Village. The race will be chip timed. All race participants will find refreshments and beverages awaiting them after they cross the finish line. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top adult male and female finishers and to the top male and female finishers age 18 and under. Medals will also be awarded to the top male and female finishers in different age categories. Participants will be eligible to win a variety of door prizes that have been donated by
local businesses and individuals. A Kids’ Fun Run will offer a 0.2-mile course for children age 7 and under and a 0.4-mile course for 8- to 10-year-olds. The Fun Run will begin at approximately 9:45 a.m. as the 5K is winding down. Bells And Whistles from pg 1 Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days Set For Sept. 15 and 16 By Chelsea Peifer
Each year the dedicated residents who organize Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days decide on a different agricultural process or antiquity to feature at the two-day event, and this year’s theme was chosen at the suggestion of numerous individuals. Bells, whistles, and poultry items - new and old, of all shapes and sizes - will be on display for folks to view and learn a bit of history. Organizer Darl Williams has amassed quite a collection of bells and whistles, including several worn by horses pulling the famous Conestoga wagons. In those days, bells announced that a team of horses was coming and signaled to people and animals alike to get out of the way. “Anyone can bring stuff that day to display, and there’s already been a fair amount of people who said they’re bringing these items,” said organizer Ron Bernhard, adding that train whistles and steam whistles will also be among the selection. Poultry-related items can encompass anything from old feeders to signs, memorabilia, and more. “You’d be surprised what shows up,” Bernhard commented. The 21st annual Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days event will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15 and 16, at
barbecue. Meals will be served with a baked potato, a roll and butter, applesauce, a beverage, and a sweet treat, or individuals may opt for just an entrée without any accompaniments. Participants may preorder food when they register for the event. Proceeds from the race will benefit the operational expenses of Cornerstone Youth Center. Youths in grades seven through 12 are welcome at the center six days a week, with activities and clubs from 3 to 6 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays, unstructured hangout time from 7 to 10 p.m. on Fridays, and skateboard-only hours on Sundays from 6 to 8 p.m.
Conoy Park, 2115 River Road, Bainbridge. Admission and parking will be free. Antique tractors, hit-and-miss engines, model engines, and other items will round out the machinery exhibits. Revolutionary War and Civil War re-enactors will be set up on both days. A variety of live demonstrations will include rope making, apple cider pressing, shingle sawing, and blacksmithing. Craft vendors will also be on-site offering a variety of handmade goods for sale. Organizers encourage families to take advantage of all that the festival has to offer for children. Barrel train rides, hayrides, shelled corn boxes, free pumpkins, a petting zoo, carnival-style games, and other activities will be available for children to enjoy on both days. On Sept. 15, the event will kick off with breakfast available for purchase beginning at 7 a.m. Breakfast will be available on Sept. 16 at 7 a.m., as well. An opening ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. on Sept. 15, and the youths’ and children’s fishing derby will be held directly following the opening ceremony. Youths and children age 15 and under may participate, but they must bring their own bait and fishing rods. Prizes will be awarded. Additional events on Sept. 16 will include the annual benefit auction, which will begin at 2 p.m. Auction lots are made up of a variety of donated items, including wood carvings, farm toys, baked goods, and other homemade goods. Individuals may
donate items for the auction right up until the start of bidding. All proceeds will support the event and help to keep it free to the public. Bernhard emphasized that the event runs on donations and any extra proceeds go right back into the community. A tractor parade will make its way through the event grounds at 11 a.m. on Sept. 15 and at noon on Sept. 16. Live musical entertainment will be provided on both days, including performances by bluegrass band Iron Ridge on Sept. 15. A church service will be held at 9 a.m. on Sept. 16, led by pastors from the churches in Conoy Township. The two-day festival began as a way to celebrate the heritage of the area, and it remains a community event to its core. Churches and civic organizations such as the Bainbridge Fire Company, Bainbridge Lions Club, and Elizabethtown Jaycees prepare and serve a variety of food and beverages for attendees to purchase. Local Boy Scouts assist with parking, trash, and crowd management. For more information, readers may find “Susquehanna OldFashioned Field Days” on Facebook or call 717-572-6144. Pictured on front:

Middletown Suffers Surprise Loss to McDevitt by Eric Stark
The Middletown football team has enjoyed historic success the last two seasons, racking up a ridiculous 28-2 mark during that time. Zach Malay (20:26) and Tanner Albright (20:58) both cracked the 21-minute mark while Kenny Britcher (21:01) just missed joining them. Jacob Buffington completed Middletown’s top five by finishing with a 22:06. Casey Eckert was the second Lady Raider to finish, turning in a 30:02. Bankshita Devkota was the last of the three girl’s runner, finishing with a time of 49:25 thanks to a wrong turn on the course. GOLF The two-member golf team is halfway through their regular season, having hit the links four times. With only two members, the Blue Raiders do not qualify for the team competition so Cole Grabuloff and Justin Yohn compete for postseason berths on their own. Grabuloff kicked off the season on August 16th with a round of 83 on Middletown’s home course. Yohn finished that same round at Sunset with a 105. The pair’s next round came at Mayapple Golf Club on August 20th. Grabuloff was able to remain in double digits with a round of 96 but Yohn was not as fortunate, finishing with a 108. Next up was a trip to West Shore Country Club on August 27th where Grabuloff finished sixth with a score of 86. This time Yohn was able to break into double digits with a round of 99. Middletown’s final match of August sent Grabuloff and Yohn to Royal Oaks Golf Cub where Grabuloff posted a round of 89, good enough for 15th on the day. Yohn finished his day with a 109. TENNIS The girl’s tennis team braved the heat last week for two matches, splitting the pair to sit at 1-5 on the year. The Lady Raiders nipped Susquehanna Township, 3-2, on Tuesday by winning two of the three singles matches. Mahnoor Azim grabbed one of those wins at number one singles. Angie Torres claimed the other singles win, taking out Justice Rooney in straight sets at number three singles. Middletown’s third win came at number one doubles where Aayushi Patel and Cassidy Anderson teamed up to top Taryn Woodson and Avani Patel, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. The Lady Raiders had their second match of the week, a September 6th tilt opposite Camp Hill, called due to rain with the Lady Lions leading 4-0.

The Raiders’ Lamar Ventura drops Bishop McDevitt’s T’nyis Becker for a loss during last Friday’s nonleague contest in Middletown.
Middletown’s victory over Susquehanna Township was not only their first but it broke a string of four straight 5-0 losses to open the season. Those losses were to East Pennsboro, Trinity, James Buchanan and Bishop McDevitt. VOLLEYBALL The girls’ volleyball team enjoyed a stellar start to their regular season with wins over Harrisburg and Milton Hershey. On September 4th the Lady Raiders swept Harrisburg with the work of Cassie Ebersole, Alexis Harmon and Hannah Wilsbach leading to wins of 25-9, 25-23 and 25-9. “Our girls didn’t stay as focused as they should have in game two,” said head coach Lisa Huber of the closer than expected second game. “Harrisburg started to get some momentum and made some big plays defensively to catch us off guard.” Ebersole finished with seven kills and two aces while Harmon added five aces and seven digs to her five kills. Wilsbach chipped in with10 digs and one ace. Another lapse of focus forced Middletown into a five-game nail biter with Milton Hershey two
days later. After winning the opening game 25-18 the Lady Raiders dropped two straight, 25-17, 25-11. “We struggled with staying focused in games two and three and gave Milton Hershey the opportunity to gain some momentum,” said Huber, “Once the girls settled in and started passing/hitting in game four, the momentum started to shift.” That momentum shift allowed the Lady Raiders to stave off the loss with a 25-18 game four win before closing out the victory with a 15-11 game five win. Carly Dupes and Alex Kennedy posted a team high five kills apiece with Kennedy adding one block and Dupes two aces. Ebersole chipped in with four kills and three aces while Lani Moore finished with three kills and a team high four aces.

COMMUNITYCOURIER - Middletown Edition -
Chatter Hi, everyone! We are rolling right along into September, aren’t we? September is awesome, though. I already put up my pumpkins, leaves, and acorn décor. And I am burning my pumpkin- and cinnamon-scented candles. Hey, at least it is not my Christmas tree yet! Wonderful Advice A professor was giving a lecture to his students on stress management. He raised a glass of water and asked the audience, “How heavy do you think this glass of water is?” The students’ answers ranged from 1 ounce to 1 pound. “It does not matter on the absolute weight. It depends on how long you hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it is OK. If I hold it for an hour, I will have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you will have to call an ambulance. It is the exact same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.” If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, we will not be able to carry on, the burden becoming increasingly heavier. What you have to do is to put the glass down, rest for a while before holding it up again. We have to put down the burden periodically, so that we can be refreshed and are able to carry on. So before you return home from work tonight, put the burden of work down. Don’t carry it back home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you are having now on your shoulders, let it down for a moment if you can. Pick it up again later when you have rested. Rest and relax. Life is short. Enjoy it! This Week’s Poetry When I was young, my slippers were red, I could kick up my heels over my head. When I got older, my slippers were blue, But I still could dance the

whole night thru. Now I am old, and my slippers are black, I walk to the corner and puff my way back. How do I know my youth has been spent? My get-up-and-go has got up and went! But I really don’t mind, as I think with a grin Of all the grand places my “get-up” has been. I get up each morning and dust off my wits, Pick up the paper and read the obits. If I find my name missing, I know I’m not dead, So I eat a good breakfast and go back to bed! Random Thought How is it that I always seem to buy the plants without the will to live? Recipe of the Week Best-Ever Apple Crisp Ingredients: Apple Mixture 10 cups Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and sliced 1 cup brown sugar 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Crisp Mixture 2 cup quick-cooking oats 2 cup all-purpose flour 2 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 cup (2 sticks) butter (cubed while cold) Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Prepare a 9-by-13-inch pan with baking spray or coating with butter. Apple Mixture 1. Place sliced apples in a bowl. Add brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Stir gently and make sure every piece of apple is covered in the sugar mixture. Set aside. Crisp Mixture 1. Combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, baking powder, and baking soda together. Add
in the cubed butter and use your hands to combine. You want the butter to be pea-sized and coated entirely. 2. Spread half over the bottom of your prepared pan and press flat. Pour the apple mixture over top and press down with rubber spatula. Pour remaining crisp mixture over top of the apples and bake uncovered at 375 degrees for 35-45 minutes. Fact of the Week When soda was first marketed and available, the bottles were sealed with a cork; the sound of the cork being removed is how soda came to be known as “pop.” Joke of the Week A nun is sitting with her Mother Superior chatting. “I used some horrible language this week and feel absolutely terrible about it.” “When did you use this awful language?” asks the elder. “Well, I was golfing and hit an incredible drive that looked like it was going to go over 280 yards, but it struck a phone line that is hanging over the fairway and fell straight down to the ground after going only about 100 yards.” “Is that when you swore?” “No, Mother,” says the nun. “After that, a squirrel ran out of the bushes and grabbed my ball in its mouth and began to run away.” “Is THAT when you swore?” asks the Mother Superior again. “Well, no,” says the nun. “You see, as the squirrel was running, an eagle came down out of the sky, grabbed the squirrel in his talons and began to fly away!” “Is THAT when you swore?” asks the amazed elder nun. “No, not yet. As the eagle carried the squirrel away in its claws, it flew near the green and the squirrel dropped my ball.” “Did you swear THEN?” asked Mother Superior, becoming impatient. “No, because the ball fell on a big rock, bounced over the sand trap, rolled onto the green, and stopped about six inches from the hole.” The two nuns were silent for a moment. Then Mother Superior sighed and said, “You missed the #*@%! putt, didn’t you?” Thank You Thanks to my mom Anna Pilsitz of Middletown for the poem! That is funny because it is pretty much true! Thanks to Thomas Menear of Middletown for the joke! Do you remember when you sent that joke to me, Tom? A LONG time ago! Food for Thought Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future. -Paul Boese Have a great week, everybody!

The County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania (CCAP) has honored several Pennsylvania county leaders and others who have enhanced the well-being of counties and residents. The awards were given at the organization’s 2018 annual conference in Adams County. CCAP’s Outstanding County Commissioner/Council Member of the Year Award was presented to Warren County’s Jeff Eggleston. Eggleston was acknowledged for his service and association participation which has contributed to the advancement of county government, including projects related to communications with townships and boroughs; the North/South Corridor Project with Chatauqua County, N.Y.; a recycling center that assists with inmate work release programs, and human services advancements. CCAP’s Outstanding Chief Clerk/Administrator Award was presented to Lawrence County’s Jim Gagliano Jr. for his service as county administrator since 2005, after serving as the county’s planning director. Gagliano has professionally and successfully met numerous challenges and currently serves as the executive director of the Redevelopment Authority, the Municipal Authority and the County Land Bank. The 2018 Outstanding Solicitor was given to Chester County’s Tom Whiteman for providing sound judgment with the best interests of the county and its residents in mind for more than 30
years. Whiteman has used his talents on significant projects such as the construction of a justice center and a state-of-the-art public safety training campus, as well as the purchase of an emergency radio system. CCAP’s Outstanding Affiliate of the Year Award was presented to two Pennsylvania Association of County Administrators of Mental Health and Developmental Services members, Don Clark of Allegheny County and Dan Eisenhauer of Dauphin County, for their efforts in creating new options for counties to work collaboratively with the commonwealth in developing an improved county based management structure for community intellectual disability services. The 2018 Friend of County Government Award, the highest honor CCAP bestows on a nonmember, was presented to Maryann Nardone. Nardone, recently retired project manager for the Pennsylvania Legislative Budget and Finance Committee, a joint research arm of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, received the award for continued commitment to the improvement of county government by assisting CCAP and its members while maintaining the highest ethical and moral standards. Most recently, her applied research into county property assessment practices and her participation on the Local Government Commission’s Assessment Reform Task Force led to development of comprehensive reports, legislation and
practice documents for counties. CCAP’s 2018 Excellence in Website Design Awards were given to Bedford County and Chester County. Both counties’ recent website enhancements led to accessible, modern designs, with increased functionality, highlights of county services and greater transparency to improve residents’ interactions with county government. President’s Awards were bestowed by CCAP president and Lancaster County commissioner Dennis Stuckey to CCAP leaders Doug Hill, executive director; Brinda Penyak, deputy director; and John Sallade, managing director of insurance programs. The award was presented to honor commitment to CCAP’s president and outstanding contributions leading to enhanced service to county residents. CCAP is a statewide nonprofit, nonpartisan association representing all 67 counties in Pennsylvania. CCAP members include county commissioners, council members, county executives, administrators, chief clerks and solicitors. CCAP seeks to strengthen counties’ abilities to govern their own affairs and improve the well-being and quality of life for every Pennsylvania resident. It advocates for favorable state and federal legislation, programs and policies on behalf of counties. For more information, readers may visit www.pacounties.org or CCAP’s Twitter page @PACountiesGR.
