Back to Blue Raider football is probably the best way to describe Middletown’s 63-0 shellacking of Camp Hill last Friday evening. The Blue Raiders racked up 441 yards of offense, 366 on the ground, while holding the visiting Lions to a measly 64 total yards. Add in a fumble return for a touchdown plus a punt return score and one can easily conclude that the Blue Raiders complexly shook off their first regular season loss in over two years. Middletown all but put the game away with a 28-point first quarter outburst that started when Scott Ash hit Tajae Broadie for a 56-yard score just 1:14 into the game. The lead moved to 14-0 midway through the frame when Cole Senior scooped up a fumble and returned it 51 yards to paydirt. Richie Sykes picked up the first of his three rushing TDs with a four-yard score that came with 2:52 remaining in the frame. Ash made it a four-score contest about 1:30 later with a 61-yard scramble. Another outburst in the second quarter, this one of the 21-point
variety, made it a mercy rule contest before the halftime horn. Lamar Ventura officially put the game into mercy rule territory with his 64-yard punt return touchdown just 32 seconds into the second quarter. Sykes and the Blue Raider offense needed roughly three minutes to stretch the lead to 49-0. The senior running back, who finished with 95 yards on nine carries, broke off TD runs of 19 and 45 yards in a three-minute span that ran from 9:34 of the first quarter to 6:43, capping the first half scoring. With a running clock the entire second half the Blue Raider scoring was kept to a minimum. Odell Greene accounting for 45 of his team high 116 yards with a third quarter score. Tymir Jackson also picked up large chuck of his 115 yards with Middletown’s final touchdown, a 21 yarder with 8:36 remaining in the game. FIELD HOCKEY The Middletown field hockey team continues to find their first victory to be elusive. The Lady Raiders dropped both of their games last week to fall to 0-4 on the season. Up first was a 7-0 loss to Bishop McDevitt on Thursday.

The Lady Crusaders used two goals each from Julia Vargo, Mary Parker and Sydney Altemose to hand Natasha Manfred (six saves) the loss. Two days later the Lady Raiders traveled to the north side of Harrisburg to face Susquehanna Township. The trip resulted in a 4-1 loss for Middletown with Alexis Fischer netting the lone Lady Raider score. GIRLS’ SOCCER Last week proved to be a short and pleasant week for the girls’ soccer team. After early week rain postponed their game with Camp Hill to September 22nd the Lady Raiders were left with just a Thursday afternoon affair opposite Milton Hershey. Middletown, behind two scores from Camryn Russ, cruised to a 4-0 victory. Russ opened the scoring in the 17th minute with help from Hayli Akakpo-Martin then made it a 2-0 game four minutes later by converting a Haylee Sprecher feed. Jade Senior and Akakpo-Martin finished the scoring with unassisted goals in the 25th and 34th minutes. Amanda Lee enjoyed the easy day in goal needing just three saves to earn the clean sheet. GOLF The golf team saw their round at Colonial Country Club on September 12th cut to nine holes due to soggy

conditions. Cole Grabuloff and Justin Yohn took advantage to post top 15 scores. Grabuloff led the way with a 43 to finish in a sixth-place tie with Boiling Spring’s Connor Truex. Yohn finished two strokes back in a 12th place tie with Camp Hill’s Jackson Thompson and East Pennsboro’s Jack Thompson. Despite the rainy weather the girls’ tennis team was able to play three matches last week. Unfortunately, Middletown dropped all three with Tuesday’s battle opposite East Pennsboro as well as Thursday’s clash with Trinity ending in a 5-0 final. In between those two matches was a 3-2 loss to Harrisburg Academy. Middletown split their two team points between singles and doubles action with Mahnoor Azim picking up the singles victory. Half of the Lions offense came in the form of Middletown’s two own goals that were the result of wacky deflections in the box. One of those deflections came in the first half and along with goals by

what proved to be a needed insurance goal thanks to Keyser and Garrett Miller providing the setup. Tristan Gyamfi picked up the Spartans goal and kept Dane Ebersole (five saves) from earning the shutout when he scored in the 76th minute.

ored them by washing their granite panels on the wall. Following the wall washing, the ceremony concluded with laying of a wreath of flowers. VVA Chapter 542 meets at 12:30 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month at 8000 Derry St., Harrisburg. The next meeting will take place on Oct. 14. The meeting is open to the public. Pictured on front: Vietnam
veterans honored fallen friends by washing the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.
Conewago Elementary School, 2809 Hershey Road, Elizabethtown, will hold its 50th annual Country Fair on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Presented by the school’s PTO, the Country Fair will be held on the school grounds, and additional parking will be available across the road at Shenk’s Church. Featured events will include children’s carnival games, a petting zoo, pumpkin painting, a silent auction, a bounce house, a balloon artist, a caricaturist, food trucks, a bake sale, and more. The petting zoo, children’s games, bake sale, and class basket giveaway drawings will begin at 9 a.m. Food trucks will open at 10 a.m. and will offer items such as pizza and frozen yogurt. Community organizations like Hershey Volunteer Fire Company, Derry Township
Scouts from pg 1
Police, and Life Lion Ambulance will also be on-site. The PTO will also host an online silent auction at www.LaneRyanAuctions.com. Bidding opened on Sept. 17. All lots will be on display at the Country Fair beginning at 9 a.m. Bidding will end at 1 p.m. Winners may pick up their items at the fair between 3 and 4:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium or the following week from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the school office. The event is the primary fundraiser for the Conewago PTO. Thanks to the previous success of the fair, the PTO has been able to eliminate student sales-based fundraisers. Money raised through the fair is used to support school assemblies, field trips, and projects like the school book closet. For more information, readers may contact the school at 717-367-7233.

“Carrie” Musical Will Take Stage
Fri. & Sat., September 28th & 29th
Friday Night 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Committee chair Ted Pauley and advancement chair Julie Myers awarded nearly 40 merit badges. The Scouts took advantage of the summer months to earn badges in primarily outdoor activities including fishing, climbing, canoeing, rifle shooting, camping, astronomy, nature, oceanography, space exploration, bird study, personal fitness, swimming, forestry, shotgun, and insect study. Scouts Matthew Brion and Jesse Reigle were awarded the Totin’ Chip for learning how to use, handle, sharpen and store wood tools properly. They also earned the Firem’n Chit for learning how to choose a safe place for a fire, how to start a fire with no matches and how to make sure the fire is extinguished properly. In addition, the Scoutmasters presented more than 30 awards earned during Camp Rodney’s summer camp on the Chesapeake Bay, as well as nearly 50 awards earned during the Northern Tier high adventure canoeing, fishing and camping trip to Atikokan in Ontario, Canada. Canadian awards included the 50-miler patch, which was earned for paddling more than 50 miles along the Canadian waterways, and the Environmentalist Award to Scouts who participated in a water quality testing experiment with local scientists. USPS Shares Mailbox Reminders The United States Postal Service (USPS) has released several tips to encourage customers on city motorized, rural, or highway contract box delivery routes to examine and, where necessary, improve the appearance of their mailboxes. The USPS reminds customers of the need for providing mailboxes that are: approved by the postmaster general, safe to use, conveniently located, and neat in appearance. According to the USPS, mailboxes that meet these four requirements help delivery and collection operations and improve service to the entire route. Some of the typical activities that may be necessary include: replacing loose hinges on a mailbox door, repainting a mailbox that may have rusted or started to peel, remounting a mailbox post that may have become loose, and replacing or adding house numbers. Approved traditional or contemporary curbside mailboxes are required whenever a mailbox is newly installed or replaced. However, a custom-built curbside mailbox may be used if the postmaster gives prior approval and if the mailbox conforms generally to the same requirements as approved manufactured curbside mailboxes. A mailbox should display the street name and house number or, if house numbers are not authorized, the assigned box number on the side of a single mailbox or on the doors of grouped mailboxes visible to the approaching carrier. The street number, box number, and/or any other address information must be inscribed in a contrasting color in neat letters and numerals not less than 1

More than half of repair calls are for systems that are not properly maintained. Most HVAC re-pairs, including those $ 00 expensive after hour calls, could be prevented with regular seasonal maintenance. Call Leo Kob Company for a Pre-ventative Maintenance Agreement (PMA) to make sure your heating and air conditioning units are running at peak efficiency. You will re-ceive a thorough cleaning and complete check-up of your system to ensure that it is safe and fully operational. inch in height. Customers are encouraged to group mailboxes whenever practical, especially where many mailboxes are located at or near crossroads, service turnouts, or similar locations. If the mailbox is on a street other than the one on which the customer resides, the street name and house number must be on the mailbox. It is generally in the customers’ best interest to display their address on both sides of the box. Police, fire, and rescue personnel often depend on mailbox information to locate people, and they may approach from a different direction than the carrier. In all instances, placing the owner’s name on the box is optional. Generally, customers should install mailboxes with the bottom of the mailbox at a vertical height of between 3.5 to 4 feet from the road surface. However, because of varying road and curb conditions and other factors, the USPS recommends that customers contact the postmaster or carrier before erecting or replacing mailboxes and supports. The curbside mailbox must be on the right-hand side of the road in the carrier’s travel direction in all cases where traffic conditions make it dangerous for the carrier to drive to the left to reach the mailboxes, or where doing so would constitute a violation of federal, state, or local traffic laws and regulations. Mailboxes should be placed so the carrier can safely and conveniently serve them without leaving the vehicle. Carriers are subject to the same traffic laws and regulations as other motorists. Customers must remove obstructions, including vehicles, trash cans, and snow, that impede efficient delivery. Except when a mailbox is temporarily blocked, carriers must have access to the mailbox without leaving the vehicle. The USPS does not approve support posts. In addition, the USPS does not regulate mounting of mailboxes for purposes of traffic safety. Mailbox posts are often subject to local restrictions, state laws, and federal highway regulations. In areas where snow removal is a problem, the USPS suggests using a semi-arch or extended arm-type support, which allows snowplows to sweep near or under boxes without damaging supports. For further information on authorized post and support mountings, customers may contact either: American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, 444 N. Capitol St. N.W. Suite 249, Washington, D.C., 200011-1512; or Federal Highway Administration Office of Highway Safety HHS 10, 400 Seventh St. S.W., Washington, D.C., 20590-0003. Additional information is available at www.usps.com/ manage/mailboxes.htm.

Tip of the Week To detangle a knot, rub some cornstarch into stubborn knots in shoelaces, string, chain necklaces, and more. Works like magic! Fact of the Week A portrait of Franklin Delano Roosevelt appears on the dime in part because of his work with the March of Dimes and its battle against polio, the disease with which he was diagnosed. Joke of the Week For all of us who are married, were married, wish you were married, or wish you weren’t married, this is something to smile about the next time you open a bag of chocolates: Sally was driving home from one of her business trips in northern Arizona when she saw an elderly Navajo woman walking on the side of the road. As the trip was a long and quiet one, she stopped the car and asked the Navajo woman if she would like a ride. With a silent nod of thanks, the woman got into the car. Resuming the journey, Sally tried in vain to make a bit of small talk with the Navajo woman. The old woman just sat silently, looking intently at everything she saw, studying every little detail, until she noticed a white bag on the seat next to Sally. “What in bag? asked the old woman. Sally looked down at the white bag and said, “It’s a box of chocolates. I got it for my husband. The Navajo woman was silent for another moment or two. Then, speaking with the quiet wisdom of an elder, she said, “Good trade. Thank You Thanks to Terri Menear of Lower Swatara Township for “I Wrote Your Name! That was so nice! Thank you to Linda Bo Jackson of Middletown for the joke! That one cracks me up! Food for Thought Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.

breathing deep and relaxing both body and mind, the solution, in similar fashion to the shadow of the tree, will swallow up the problem whole and leave us free to celebrate. I Wrote Your Name I wrote your name on a piece of paper, but by accident threw it away. I wrote your name on my hand, but it washed away. I wrote your name in the sand, but the waves whispered it away. I wrote your name in my heart, and forever it will stay. Happy Birthdays Happy birthday to Chase Gutshall of Middletown! Hi, everyone! I try to look for the good in everything. But I cannot find one tiny bit of good in mosquitoes. I hate mosquitoes. We were on vacation last week, and we went to the shore (surprise, surprise!) and what was supposed to be a week at our camper turned out to only be two days! It wasn’t the rain or the dreariness or the high humidity ... I just could not take another bite from another mosquito! I look like I have a bad case of chickenpox from all the mosquito bite bumps all over my legs, arms, feet, and hands; I even got two bites on my behind! They were biting me through my clothes! But you know what? That vacation really made me appreciate home so much more! There’s no place like home, as Dorothy would say! Today’s Blessing There was a man that hated his footprints and his shadow. So, one day he thought that if he ran fast enough, his footprints and shadow would not be able to follow him and then he never ever had to look at them again. He ran and he ran as fast as he could, but the shadow and the footprints had no problems keeping up to him. And he ran even faster, and all of a sudden, he fell dead to the ground. But if he had been standing still, there wouldn’t have been any footprints, and if he had been resting under a tree, his shadow would have been swallowed by the tree’s shadow. (Benjamin Hoff, author of “The Tao of Pooh) Many times we hate our problems and do our best to run away from them, but no matter how fast we run or how far we go, our problems follow, scurrying behind us like footprints and shadows. Little do we realize that, if we will just stand still and wait,

well-known for things like its agriculture and natural beauty, Search noted, but also for the way that its people come together to address the needs of the community. “Joining Forces is just the latest example - in this case bringing together dozens of organizations to develop and implement a comprehensive plan for opioid abuse prevention and help for those trapped in addiction,” said Search. LCJF strives to implement a continuum of care with an emphasis on both broad, community-based education and awareness and the promotion of healthy lifestyles, while also connecting people who are experiencing addiction to appropriate treatment and recovery support. Some of the organization’s efforts include producing and distributing more than 93,000 brochures about opioid addiction and how to get help throughout the county and working with schools. LCJF currently offers evidence-based prevention programming in 13 school districts. In the first three months of 2018, Lancaster County’s rate of overdose deaths was down 20 percent from 2017, according to Search. “Early data from April through May suggests that rate of overdose deaths continues to head downward,” said Search. “While it is too soon to say if

According to Rosemary Search, health promotion specialist with Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, LCJF launched as a community collaborative in 2017 with a primary aim of supporting and coordinating countywide efforts to reduce the number of deaths from overdoses of heroin and other opioids. LCJF brings key stakeholders and community members together to strengthen existing initiatives across all sectors, identify and address gaps in services and resources, and implement strategies for prevention, intervention, and monitoring. “Opioid-related overdose deaths constitute a serious public health concern across the United States,” stated Search. The United States federal government declared a national public health emergency in October 2017, with Pennsylvania declaring a statewide disaster emergency in January 2018. “Lancaster County is not alone in this crisis, but it displays a higher rate of drug-related overdose deaths than the nationwide average,” said Search, noting that more than 160 Lancastrians died from accidental overdose in 2017. “The opioid crisis is not a problem happening ‘somewhere else,’ nor is it limited to our nation’s cities or among certain socioeconomic populations,” Search emphasized. The teams will be captained by the four Pennsylvania legislative leaders: Senate president pro tempore Joe Scarnati, Senate Democratic leader Jay Costa, Speaker of the House Mike Turzai, and Democratic House leader Frank Dermody. The game has generated a total of nearly $100,000 for the state’s two food security organizations, Hunger-Free Pennsylvania and Feeding Pennsylvania, which provide meals through their network of food banks, food pantries and other affiliated hunger relief organizations located in each of the state’s 253 legislative districts. The game will be broadcast live by the Pennsylvania Cable Network. Admission to the game is free, with a cash donation requested. For more details, readers may visit www.capitolallstars.org.
