Chalk up another one. The Middletown football team throttled Boiling Springs last Friday 51-14 to improve to 5-1 overall. The win also keeps the Blue Raiders in a three-way tie for first in the Capital Division along with Palmyra and Milton Hershey who share Middletown’s 3-0 division record. The Blue Raiders went for nearly 600 yards of offense, finishing with 597 while holding the Bulldogs to 194 yards. Jose Lopez and Richie Sykes led the ground attack while Scott Ash and Chris Joseph enjoyed the lax coverage the pair created. The Ash to Joseph connection kicked off the scoring just 16 seconds after kickoff, covering 70 yards for a 7-0 lead. Boiling Springs answered a minute later with their own big play hook-up. Zack Vonstein hit Tayven Kelley for a 69-yard score and a tie game. Lopez put Middletown back on top with the first of three touchdowns, this one from 20 yards out with 7:08 remaining in the frame. The Bulldogs answered one last time with Vonstein picking up his second touchdown of the game, this one to Mike Wagner and covering 18 yards. The Blue Raiders put one last score on the board before the first quarter expired when Sykes broke free for a 59-yard score that made it 21-14. Lopez picked up another touchdown in the second quarter, this one a 25-yard yarder just after the 10-minute mark. Middletown picked up a surprising two points a few minutes later when the Boiling Spring punter stepped out of the end zone for a safety that made it 30-14. The final points of the first half came when Ash hit Joseph for another TD, the 57-yard pitch and catch capping Joseph’s 138-yard game. Lopez covered 49 yards on his final touchdown of the game, punching it in with 2:41 remaining in the third quarter. Ash capped the scoring with this third TD pass of the evening, this one finding Jarrod Pugh and covering 25 yards. Ash finished with 230 yards on nine completions and those three touchdowns. Lopez needed 15 carries to tally his 170 yards while Sykes picked up 115 yards on just five carries. All three Lady Raider wins came in singles play starting with Mahnoor Azim topping Shaye Dietrich at number one. Azim earned the win with scores of 6-4 and 6-2. Anna Buffington matched the straight set win, posting 6-0 and 6-1 finals over Gabby Frye in number two singles. Angie Torres made it three straight wins with a 6-3, 6-0 showing over Justice Rooney. Grabuloff finished his round with no birdies and just two pars on his way to a 29-over round of 101. GIRLS’ SOCCER The girls’ soccer team hit the pitch twice last week, dropping both games to fall to 2-7 with eight games remaining in the regular season. East Pennsboro handed Middletown the first loss, scoring two goals late in the contest to steal a 3-2 win. VOLLEYBALL The girls’ volleyball team split a pair of matches last week, falling to West Perry on Monday and beating Harrisburg on Wednesday. Middletown nearly finished off the West Perry match in four games with a 25-21 game one win plus a 26-24 game three win putting the Lady Mustangs on the brink. West Perry was able to add to their 25-22 game two win and pick up the victory thanks to a 25-19 game four final and a 15-7 game five final. Hannah Wilsbach tallied 16 digs, two kills and two aces in the loss while Katie Knaub added seven assists, seven digs, four kills and three aces. Alexis Harmon finished with six aces, five kills and two digs and Cassie Ebersole capped the team leaders with six kills and one block. The Lady Raiders picked up their third win in their last four matches with a 3-0 victory over Harrisburg on September 26th. Middletown took the opening game with ease, 25-13, but had to sweat out matching 25-20 wins in games two and three to secure the sweep. Ebersole (seven kills) and Harmon (six kills) led the attack with the pair adding five combined aces and one Harmon dig. Carly Dupes finished with a team high 10 assists but Courtney Shaffer was close

behind with six assists to go with four aces and one kill. Dupes added three kills while Wilsbach contributed with 11 digs and one ace. BOYS’ SOCCER The boys’ soccer team ended up on the wrong side of all three of their games last week and now have twice as many losses on the season as wins. The Blue Raiders carry a 4-8 mark into their final six games of the 2018 season. Middletown’s first loss of the week took place on Monday with Sami Almouzani netting the game’s only goal in the 18th minute to give the visiting Panthers the 1-0 win. Caleb Springer turned away seven shots in the loss. Three days later the Blue Raiders made the trip to Elliottsburg for a battle with West Perry. The Mustangs, behind Jessiah Osbeck’s two goals, handed Middletown a 5-0 loss for the trip home. Springer finished with three saves. Middletown made the trek to Kinzers for Saturday’s tilt with Pequea Valley and the LancasterLebanon League Indians handed the Blue Raiders an 8-3 loss. Three separate players scored for Middletown but it was not enough to overcome TJ Hershey (four goals) and Elijah Elkins (two goals) combined six goals. Springer picked up another five saves while LaVia, Griffey Meyer and Gary Mensah accounted for the first half scores.

Heart Walk from pg 1 walkers during the opening ceremonies and introduced the Thomas family of Boiling Springs, who shared the story of their 3-year-old son’s heart defect diagnosis. Until July 2017, Rachel and Ryan Thomas thought their 2-year-old son Henry was a normal, healthy boy. When they took him for a routine check-up, it was discovered that Henry had a serious congenital heart defect called coarctation of the aorta, or a narrowing of the blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. Just a few months later, on Sept. 29, 2017, Henry underwent a complete surgical repair of his defect.

After a warmup led by Ashley Newcomer, Henry and his father, Ryan, led the walkers to the starting line to kick off the walk around City Island. Proceeds support the American Heart Association’s mission to support heart disease and stroke research, health care quality improvement, advocacy, prevention and education. The Heart Walk is part of the American Heart Association’s Healthy For Good movement to encourage sustainable healthy lifestyle changes. For the past several years, the menu has also included the

The dish consists of a mixture of seasoned ground meats and rice wrapped in cabbage

The church will also serve pirohy, also known as pierogi or varenniki, crescent-shaped pockets of fresh pasta stuffed with cheesy mashed potatoes and served with diced onions in butter. Other items will include the garlicky smoked pork sausage known as kolbassy (kielbasa); halushky, noodles sautĂŠed with cooked chopped cabbage and onions; and Macedonian burgers known as sharska pleskavica or lovechka pleskavica, seasoned with onions, herbs, and bell peppers. Alongside these tastes of Eastern Europe will be a fragrant Eritrean and Ethiopian chicken dish known as tsebi derho in Eritrean or doro wat in Ethiopian. The dish is a stew of chicken simmered in a slow-cooked base of seasoned onions and a blend of ground, toasted spices known as berbere. This year, there will be two versions, mild and spicy. Both versions will be accompanied by a stretchy, bubbly flatbread called injera, made with the ancient African grain teff. The menu will also include alicha, a savory Eritrean and Ethiopian vegetable stew, also served with injera. Desserts will include Slavic nut rolls,

poppy-seed rolls, and apricot rolls, featuring sweet filling rolled up in a bread dough and baked into long, slender loaves. Kifli, traditional Slavic cookies with sweet walnut paste rolled up in a diamond of pastry, along with baklava and other treats will be available. The church will also serve hombasha, or himbasha, a slightly sweet Eritrean and Ethiopian bread seasoned with cardamom and made for celebrations. All food served at the festival will be handmade at the church by parishioners, with the exception of the kolbassy, which is handcrafted by a traditional artisanal sausage shop. In addition to the food festival, Christ the Saviour’s cultural celebrations include an International Day of food and culture on Pentecost Sunday. Random Thought The trouble with life is that there is no background music. Recipe of the Week Pan-seared Sausage with Apples Ingredients: 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 4 sweet Italian sausages (about 1 pound), pricked with a fork 1/2 cup water 2 Granny Smith apples, peeled and thinly sliced 1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds 1 tablespoon cider vinegar Salt and freshly ground pepper Directions: 1. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil. Add the sausages and cook over moderate heat, turning occasionally, until browned

but not cooked through, about 5 minutes. Tip of the Week Clean the inside of your top-loading washing machine by running a cycle on the hottest setting with the most water possible and for the longest setting available. Once the water has filled, add in a quart of white vinegar and 1 cup of washing or baking soda, then let the mixture sit for about an hour before allowing the cycle to continue. Once the cycle has finished and drained, run the cycle again without any additives (i.e. no vinegar, no bleach - just water). Fact of the Week In order to give an even greater illusion of height, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, is painted in three variations of a single color, with the lightest shade at the top and the darkest at the bottom. Food for Thought Remember, when the world pushes you to your knees, you’re in the perfect position to pray. Have a great week, everybody!

Hi, everyone! In case you forgot what I said last week, I am really loving autumn! I am looking forward to the next few months with all the holidays and festivities! I am looking forward to the fun and frivolity of Halloween, the warmth and family togetherness of Thanksgiving, and the peace, joy, hope, and love of Christmas and the merriment of New Year’s Eve! OK, I’m getting a little ahead of it all, but the holiday season just flies by so fast. Good Advice from Dogs If a dog were the teacher, you would learn stuff like: • When loved ones come home, always run to greet them. • Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride. • Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy. • When it’s in your best interest, practice obedience. • Let others know when they’ve invaded your territory. • Take naps. • Stretch before rising. • Run, romp, and play daily. • Thrive on attention and let people touch you. • Avoid biting when a simple growl will do. • On warm days, stop to lie on your back in the grass. • On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree. • When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body. • No matter how often you’re scolded, don’t buy into the guilt thing and pout ... run right back and make friends. • Delight in the simple joy of a long walk. • Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. Stop when you have had enough. • Be loyal. Never pretend to be something you’re not. • If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it. • When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently. Happy Birthdays Happy birthday to Logan Hulstine of Middletown! His cake-day is Oct. 4. I hope your day is extra wonderful, Logan! Happy birthday to Butch Gutshall of Royalton! His cake-day is Oct. 7. I hope your day is a ton of fun, Butchie-boy! Happy birthday to Shawna Clendenin of Middletown! Her cake-day is Oct. 7. I hope your day is full of sunshine and happiness, Shawna! Happy birthday to Rutger Metzler of Middletown! His cake-day is Oct. 7. I hope your day is awesome like you, Ruc! Miss ya! Happy birthday to Betty Morrison of Royalton! Her cake-day is Oct. 8. I hope your day makes you feel like a queen, Betty!
