Booters Cap Season With Mixed Results by Eric Pyles

The Blue Raiders wrapped up their 7-11 season with a 3-1 victory over Bishop McDevitt on October 16th. Mason Garza paced the offense while Springer backed the defensive effort with three saves. Garza helped stretch Middletown’s one goal lead by finding LaVia at the 12:51 mark. He also capped the scoring at 76:14 by converting a penalty kick. Aiden Sessa put Middletown on the board in the seventh minute with his unassisted score while McDevitt broke up Springer’s shutout with a Stephen Heckart goal in the 28th minute. One day earlier, the Blue Raiders ended up on the wrong side of a 3-1 final, falling to Trinity. The Shamrocks used two first half goals from Nick Scherr to help build a 3-0 lead on their way to the win. Anthony LaVia, with help from Dagan Hughes, broke up Trinity’s shutout bid at 56:10. Caleb Springer finished the loss with five saves. FOOTBALL It was not as flashy as some of their

previous wins but the Blue Raiders will take their 28-0 victory over East Pennsboro regardless. Middletown had their typical rushing output, churning out 283 yards. The struggles came in the air where Middletown managed just 11 yards on five completions. Thankfully they could lean on their defense which allowed just 100 total yards to the Panthers while forcing four turnovers. Two of those turnovers provided the points in Middletown’s 14-0 halftime lead. Trayvon Joseph returned a first quarter interception 19-yards to make it a 7-0 game. Joey Gusler pounced on a second quarter East Pennsboro fumble in the Panthers end zone to push the lead to 14-0. The Jose Lopez led ground game took over in the second half with the junior running back making it 21-0 thanks to a 53-yard score early in the fourth. Richie Sykes tacked on a 28yard TD with just over four minutes remaining to set the 28-0 final. Lopez tallied 195 of Middletown’s 283 rushing yards while Sykes finished with another 75 yards on 14 carries.

Middletown’s Brady Keyser gets a kick away during the Raiders’ Capital Division battle with visiting Bishop McDevitt last Tuesday.

The 8-1 Blue Raiders look to finish a perfect run through the Mid-Penn Capital division this Friday against Palmyra. FIELD HOCKEY The Lady Raider field hockey team completed their 2018 season last week, finishing 0-16-1. Middletown nearly picked up their first win in the season finale on October 16th. “It was a hard-fought game to end the season. With zero subs, we left it all on the field,” said head coach Sierra Lenker of the 1-0 loss to Wyomissing. Natasha Manfred posted her second three save game of the week with Noelle Zimmerman adding what Lenker described as an “amazing” defensive save. Manfred’s other three save game came one day prior when Middletown fell to East Pennsboro by a 13-0 final. VOLLEYBALL Middletown girls’ volleyball can add 2018 District 3-2A qualifier to

their season resume. Thanks to their 8-9 overall record, the Lady Raiders finished the regular season as the eighth seed in the 16 team 2A pool, giving them the final spot in the district championship that kicks off October 30th. The Lady Raiders nearly finished the regular season on the plus side of 500 but a 3-2 loss to Red Land in the final game left Middletown short. After dropping the first two sets 25-17 and 25-20 the Lady Raiders avoided a sweep with a 25-16 set three win. They followed with a 25-15 set four win to force a decisive fifth game. Unfortunately, Red Land claimed that final game 15-12 to hand Middletown the loss. Katie Knaub finished with 26 digs to go with 13 assists, three aces and two kills. Hannah Wilsbach matched those 26 digs and two kills while Alexis Harmon notched another 19 digs. Cassie Ebersole tallied a team high 13

kills with Harmon adding eight. The Ebersole-Harmon pair combined for six aces with Ebersole chipping in with nine digs. Courtney Shaffer rounded things out with a 12 dig, eight kill, nine assist game. Prior to the Red Land loss, Middletown had put together their third two game winning streak of the season. That started with a 3-0 win over Boiling Springs on October 15th. Ebersole led Middletown to wins of 25-13, 2519 and 25-9 with a 10 kill, two ace, two block, two dig night. Harmon added six kills, five digs and one ace while Wilsbach added two kills and one ace to her team high 13 digs.

Abbey Spagnolo rounded out the win with six digs, four aces and two kills. Middletown closed out their 2018 home slate on October 17th with a 30 win over Steel-High. The Lady Raiders had little trouble in the sweep, posting wins of 25-14, 25-20 and 25-12. Alex Kennedy tallied a team high seven kills but both Ebersole and Lani Moore were just off that pace with six. Knaub finished with 10 assists while Harmon added four kills to her team high five aces. GIRLS’ SOCCER The girls’ soccer team finished out the season with three losses in their final week.

COMMUNITYCOURIER - Middletown Edition “I am proud of the girls for continuing to battle despite the injuries and setbacks. We came close in so many games but couldn’t seem to get over the hump,” said head coach Tim Neff of his team’s 6-11 season. Two of the final three losses were to Trinity, both by 2-0 finals. The first was on the 15th with Grace Webster assisting on goals by Mayleigh Perkins and Jamie Carson to give the Lady Shamrocks the win. Amanda Lee tallied the first 10 of her 25 saves against Trinity. The remaining 15 of Lee’s saves came in the 2-0 loss on October 18th. Perkins and Webster tallied the Trinity goals that left Middletown with their 6-11 record. In the middle of the two games against Trinity was a 5-2 loss to West Perry. Hayli Akakpo-Martin scored Middletown’s first goal and assisted on Jade Senior’s tally a few minutes later but that was all the Lady Raiders could manage. Lee finished with six Photo by Doug Hilton saves while Camyrn Russ picked up an Middletown’s Joseph Gusler sacks East Pennsboro quarterback Nikolas Karoly during the Raiders’ assist on Akakpo-Martin’s goal. 28-0 Capital Division victory over the host Panthers last Friday.

hospital. UPMC Pinnacle welcomes nearly 4,000 babies a year, and this number is expected to grow. After 20 years, the hospital is in need of significant upgrades and expansion of its maternity services. With its planned completion in spring 2019, the Women and Babies Center will offer a dedicated elevator bank located at the main hospital entrance that travels directly to the eighth-floor welcome center. Enhancements to existing labor and delivery facilities will include eight new intake exam rooms and two new floors added to the Alex Grass Medical Science Building on the corner of Second and Chestnut streets. Also, the eighth floor will house a new maternity/postpartum unit with additional space for family members and enhanced technology. The new ninth floor will house a new, 42private-bed, state-of-the-art Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The center will also include a new operating room and upgrades to the current operating rooms, as well as a dedicated space for lactation services. The new Women and Babies Center is being built with noisereducing materials to allow for a setting more conducive to healing. The patient-centered design maximizes the therapeutic effects, including natural lighting; larger, efficiently designed patient rooms; and a better workflow for nurses and physicians. The total cost of the project is $57 million. Visit www.UPMCPinnacle.com.

Hands-Only CPR from pg 1 training kiosks. The kiosks feature a video touch screen that provides a brief introduction and overview of Hands-Only CPR, followed by a practice session and a 30-second test session. With the help of an integrated practice mannequin, the kiosk gives feedback about the depth and rate of chest compressions and proper hand placement, factors that influence the effectiveness of CPR. The entire training takes less than five minutes. The kiosk at Harrisburg International Airport is located in Concourse B. According to the American Heart Association, Hands-Only CPR has been shown to be as effective as conventional CPR for cardiac arrest in adults at home, at work or in public. Higher bystander CPR rates have been linked to greater

survival rates after a cardiac arrest. Hands-Only CPR consists of two easy steps. First, call 911. Second, push hard and fast in the center of the person’s chest until help arrives. To learn more about Hands-Only CPR, readers may visit www.heart.org/handsonlycpr. ILCOR was formed in 1992 to provide a forum for liaison between principal resuscitation organizations worldwide. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degree C). 2. Place the sliced apples in a 9-by-13-inch pan. Mix the white sugar, 1 tablespoon flour and ground cinnamon together, and sprinkle over apples. Pour water evenly over all. 3. Combine the oats, 1 cup flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda and melted butter together. Crumble evenly over the apple mixture. 4. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for about 45 minutes. Tip of the Week Pour a cup or more of powdered milk under running bath water. The lactic acid in the milk will remove dry dead skin and leave you baby soft. Powered milk is quite reasonably priced compared to those expensive bath oils and soaks. Fact of the Week The idea of painting fingernails originated in China, where the color of someone’s nails indicated their social rank. Joke of the Week A minister told his congregation, “Next week I plan to preach about the sin of lying. To help you understand my sermon, I want you all to read Mark 17.” The following Sunday, as he prepared to deliver his sermon, the minister asked for a show of hands. He wanted to know how many had read Mark 17. Every hand went up. The minister smiled and said, “Mark has only sixteen chapters. I will now proceed with my sermon on the sin of lying.” Thank You Thanks to Marie Crater of Middletown for the poem about smiling! You make lots of people smile, Marie! Thanks to Donna Louer of Middletown for the Food for Thought! That is great truth! Food for Thought The task ahead of us is never greater than the Power behind us!

help from volunteer skating buddies. There is a fee per session. For more information or to register as a skater or a volunteer skating buddy, readers may visit www.hershey figureskating.org/therapeutic.

Wheels on Ice will be offered for people who are in wheelchairs. A five-week session of the programs will begin on Monday, Oct. 29.

Pictured on front: Skaters who have developmental disabilities or physical challenges or who are recovering from an injury may participate in the Hershey Figure Skating Club’s Therapeutic Skating classes.

Have a great week, everybody!

“Good Little Witch was the winner in the Cutest category.

An eighth-grader at Lower Dauphin Middle School was recently recognized in front of her classmates for doing the right thing. Merci Brown-Nystrom, the daughter of Ben Nystrom and Tricia Brown-Nystrom, was nominated after she demonstrated integrity in recognizing a violation of school rules was taking place. She was honored for doing the right thing even though it would have been easier to say nothing. Merci received a gift card, a Do the Right Thing T-shirt and certificate, and a pizza coupon. Current high school senior Garrett Bauer received a certificate for helping a cafeteria worker move a large table without being asked. The Do the Right Thing program recognizes students in the Lower Dauphin community who have distinguished themselves through their accomplishments, attitude, or outstanding efforts.

Any adult over the age of 18 may nominate a child. For more information, readers may contact Angela Durantine at adurantine@ldsd.org. Pictured on front: Merci Brown-Nystrom (center) received recognition through the Do the Right Thing program. Offering congratulations were (from left) Lower Dauphin School District superintendent Robert Schultz, Hummelstown student resource officer Eugene Spencer, Lower Dauphin Middle School principal Jill Freedman, and Lower Dauphin Communities That Care program director Angie Durantine.
