Chatter Hi, everyone! Oh. My. Goodness. Where did October go? Am I right?!!! Here we are, basically hours away from November. Please don’t let November and December go as fast as September and October!!! I am pretty sure these next two months are going to fly by as well, so I am putting up my Christmas tree next weekend! Hate me if you must, but I want to savor the holiday season as long as possible. This Week’s Obscure Holidays Oct. 30 - Candy Corn Day. I think candy corn gets a bad rap. I like it! And, no, I do not like eating crayons. Oct. 31 - Magic Day. Harry Houdini died on this date in 1926, and this unofficial holiday was created a year after his death as Houdini Day. The Society of American Magicians also organizes a National Magic Week every year from Oct. 25 to 31 as a way to celebrate and appreciate the art and science behind magic. Nov. 1 - Author’s Day. Writing is hard, and writing a short story or a book is even harder. So thank your favorite authors for writing your favorite books and help budding writers and authors around you in any way you can so that they can achieve their dreams. Nov. 2 - Deviled Eggs Day. Make some deviled eggs at home for family and friends or host a deviled eggs buffet for brunch. Use your leftover deviled eggs to make egg salad sandwiches for Nov. 3’s holiday… Nov. 3 - Sandwich Day. The ultimate in convenient food and one of the most beloved food around the world, it is no surprise that the humble sandwich has it own day. Now, use up those leftover deviled eggs from yesterday to make yourself a delicious egg salad sandwich! Nov. 4 - Common Sense Day. Are you familiar with the saying “common sense is not that common”? The date coincides with the birth date of actor Will Rogers, who was thought to have coined this phrase. Nov. 5 - National Doughnut Day. I swear there was just a Doughnut Day not so long ago. But, hey, I am not complaining! *Apology Note: I mistakenly put the wrong date in last week’s column for Swatara Church of God’s Trunk or Treat. It was on Oct. 20, not Oct. 30. The correct date was printed in the previous week’s column though! My apologies. Potatoes, Eggs, and Coffee Beans Once upon a time a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and that she didn’t know how she was going to make it. She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed. Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Once the three pots
began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot, and ground coffee beans in the third pot. He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter. The daughter moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing. After twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the boiled eggs out and placed them in a bowl. He then ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup. Turning to her he asked. “Daughter, what do you see?” “Potatoes, eggs, and coffee,” she hastily replied. “Look closer,” he said, “and touch the potatoes.” She did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hardboiled egg. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma brought a smile to her face. “Father, what does this mean?” she asked. He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs, and coffee beans had each faced the same adversity - the boiling water. However, each one reacted differently. The potato went in strong, hard, and unrelenting, but in boiling water, it became soft and weak. The egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior until it was put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard. However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new. “Which are you?” he asked his daughter. “ When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean? “ Moral: In life, things happen around us, things happen to us, but the only thing that truly matters is what happens within us. Which one are you? When baking, where recipes call for water, add club soda instead to make pancakes, waffles, and any other breads fluffier. Fact of the Week The 3 Musketeers bar was originally split into three pieces with three different flavors: vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. When the other flavors became harder to come by during World War II, Mars decided to go all chocolate. Joke of the Week A man walked to the top of a hill to talk to God. The man asked, “God, what’s a million years to you?” and God said, “A minute.” Then the man asked, “Well, what’s a million dollars to you?” and God said, “A penny.” Then the man asked, “God … can I have a penny?” and God said, “Sure … in a minute.”

Students at Mount Calvary Christian School (MCCS) will present “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” in the school gymnasium, 629 N. Holly St., Elizabethtown, on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8 and 9, at 7 p.m., with an additional matinee performance on Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. Based on the children’s book written in 1950 by C.S. tures students in grades six through 12 - a diversity of ages that she appreciates as the students have a chance to learn from and interact with one another. “This show really identifies well with the faith of this school, and because it is an allegory, it is fun to see (the students) make those connections,” stated Robinson. “C.S. Lewis wrote this so that younger kids, when confronted with darker aspects of their faith and life, wouldn’t be as scared,” added Robinson. “It’s definitely going to be a family-friendly show.” Additional members of the cast include Benjamin Gerlach as Mr. Beaver, Katelyn Niedwick as Mrs. Beaver, Vince Clay as Tumnus, Jordan DeGroft as Fenris Ulf, Kylie Masters as Unicorn, Enya Smith as Centaur, Jackson Mohr as Dwarf, Joshua Humbert as Father Christmas, Alivia Rutt as Elf, and Isabel Robles as White Stag. Avalyn Hostetter, Summer Sturgis, and Kasai Hines will portray Aslan’s followers, and Emma
Nicklas, Timothy McKelvey, Aaron Smith, and Bethany Copeland will portray the Witch’s Army. Luther Rose Lecture Set In Palmyra Palm Lutheran Church, 11 W. Cherry St., Palmyra, will host the fifth annual Luther Rose Lecture on Sunday, Nov. 3, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m. The keynote speaker, the Rev. Dr. Philip Krey, will deliver two lectures with an open forum for questions and answers following each lecture. Refreshments will be served between the two lectures. Krey, a well-known speaker, will share on the subject of Martin Luther and the church’s role in the world today. The lecture, titled “Moving Forward in Faith,” is designed to appeal to people of all faiths, those interested in history, and those desiring to make a change in today’s world. The first lecture is titled “Luther’s Spiritual Disciplines as a Resource for Today.” The second lecture will be “The Protesting Catholic Luther as a Model for the Twenty-First Century.” Krey is a former president of the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, has authored 15 books, and currently serves as senior pastor at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Perkasie. His books will be available for purchase with cash or check only at the Luther Rose Lecture. The Luther Rose Lecture Series is made possible through a bequest from Pastor and Mrs. Gerhard G. Dietrich. Pastor
Philip Krey Dietrich served as pastor to Palm Lutheran Church from 1956 to 1984. He and his wife desired to bring to the community quality speakers on the subject of Lutheranism. The annual lectures discuss the historical timeframe when Martin Luther lived, the purpose of his doctrines, and the continuation of faith in the world today. The upcoming Luther Rose Lecture is free and open to the public. Although attendees may register the day of the event, for planning purposes organizers request that individuals preregister at www.palmlutheran .org/events/luther-rose -lectures or contact the parish secretary at 717-838-3311 on Mondays through Fridays between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. or at Parish.secretary @palmlutheran.org.
