Middletown Area School District (MASD) has announced it is partnering with Penn State Harrisburg in the implementation of a new student teaching model known as the Teacher Residency Collaborative Program. In this new model, four Penn State University (PSU) education students will spend the entire school year working in an MASD classroom with a mentor teacher. The resident teachers will be provided opportunities to teach and engage with students and parents much sooner than in the traditional student teaching model used in the past. They will not simply observe and shadow a classroom teacher, but they will also be a classroom teacher through collaborative teaching models such as co-teaching and parallel teaching. Resident teachers have shared that they are having experiences that they See Resident Teachers pg 4

Art Education Program Will from pg 1 Spotlight prekindergarten through grade 12. In September, MASD was informed that it was one of the first districts to receive the Local History honor. Only 57 of the 500 Pennsylvania Local historians Scott Mingus and Cooper Wingert will present a program on their new book, “Targeted Tracks: The Cumberland Valley Railroad in the Civil War, 1861-1865,” at a meeting of the Camp Curtin Historical Society at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10. The meeting will be held at the National Civil War Museum, 1 Lincoln Circle, Reservoir Park, Harrisburg. The Civil War was the first conflict in which railroads played a major role. The Cumberland Valley Railroad had an important strategic role by connecting Hagerstown, Md., to Harrisburg. Its location enhanced its importance during some of the Civil War’s most critical campaigns. Confederates hampered the Northern war effort by tearing up its tracks, seizing or torching Union supplies, and laying waste to warehouses, engine houses, and passenger depots. The line was under direct threat by invading Confederates during the 1862 Antietam Campaign and suffered serious damage during the 1863 Gettysburg Campaign and the 1864 Raid on Chambersburg. This presentation is free and open to the public. For more information, readers may contact 717-732-5115 or genjenkins@aol.com.

school districts were selected. The Outstanding Visual Arts Community accolade is a new title given by PAEA to schools and districts that have demonstrated the importance of their visual arts programs by making these programs rigorous, inclusive, highly accessible, and highly visible. The arts programs of honored schools and districts must have demonstrated rigor using standardsbased curricula taught at every level by highly qualified and certified arts educators. Programs must be offered to all students at every level of education with a sustainable budget for the visual arts, and schools and districts must have identified their programmatic accomplishments, curricula for all levels, art staff, mission statements, and arts events using their school websites and social media. Each MASD visual arts teacher is certified to teach prekindergarten through grade 12. Stacey Miller and Katie Woodworth have their master’s degrees and Elizabeth Strite has two master’s degrees. Lana Greinermiller is currently working towards her master’s through the Art of Education University. Miller presented at the PAEA conference in Pittsburgh in 2017 and earlier in Grapevine, Texas, representing a national committee of educators. Art is a part of the required curriculum for every MASD student in kindergarten through grade eight. Students at the high school level have the ability to choose art as an elective in the form of a traditional studio class or digitally based art such as graphic design or multimedia, including video or photography. A sustainable budget allows for the art program to grow, for teachers to keep current with advancements in art education, and for students to participate in local and national art competitions. MASD celebrates its young artists and their accomplishments through articles in the district newsletter and posts on the district website and other social media platforms. The art department holds an annual district-wide art exhibition to celebrate MASD’s young artists. In the 2018-19 school year, thanks to Reid Elementary teacher Gina Pronesti, holiday ornaments by art students in kindergarten through grade 12 were displayed at the governor’s mansion. Additionally, Miller’s middle school students were selected to create ornaments that hung on a tree in the White House during the holiday season. In recent years, several high school students received awards for their artwork and were accepted into art shows at the Whitaker Center and the Camp Hill Plein Air Festival. In addition to their commitment to MASD, all members of the art department keep up their own art practices. Greinermiller has an Instagram account dedicated to art education and an Etsy Store, MsG’sArtRoom. Woodworth helped the Youth Organized United To Help (Y.O.U.T.H.) in painting a community mural behind Roberto’s Pizza this past summer. Miller sells her paintings at various art shows throughout the area and teaches art lessons from her home. Strite practices photography through personal projects and as a small business. She also built her husband’s business website and regularly does design work for the company. For more details, reades may visit www.raiderweb.org/news/what_s_new /art_teachers_receive_state_award.

Resident Teachers from pg 1

Homecoming from pg 1 Middletown Area High School (MAHS) held its homecoming activities on Oct. 18 and 19. The activities began in the evening on Oct. 18 with the annual Alumni Dinner held at MAHS. On the morning of Oct. 19,

the MAHS Future Business Leaders of America Club hosted an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast. Activities continued downtown with the parade of class floats, marching bands, youth athletic teams, cheerleaders, the Honor Class of 1969, and the homecoming court, all led by grand marshal Don Graham. Prior to the Blue Raiders kickoff at 2 p.m., the senior members of the football team, cheerleaders, Blue Wave Marching Band, and video team were recognized at their final home game of the season. The Raiders were first on the board with a touchdown on their first drive, but the East Pennsboro Panthers answered right back with seven points of their own. The

rest of the half was all Raiders with a halftime score of 21-7. At the halftime homecoming queen ceremony, Marie Schopf selected the envelope containing the number five and had no choice but to pick up the final box of flowers that was left on the table. Just as has happened several times over the past few years, that final box held the lucky rose, and Schopf was crowned homecoming queen. Her escort, Joey Spear, swept Schopf off her feet and carried her to their waiting convertible for their ride around the grandstand. Back on the field, the Blue Raiders continued to dominate the game and defeated the Panthers with a 42-7 victory.

would have never had if they were just observers, such as having the opportunity to talk to parents about student concerns and learning behavior modification and classroom management tips. All four resident teachers said they are receiving confirmation that teaching is what they desire to do when they graduate. Jessica Horetsky was a member of the Middletown Area High School Class of 2015, the last class to graduate from the old high school. After attending West Chester University from 2015 to 2016, she transferred to Penn State Harrisburg, where she is studying elementary education for prekindergarten through fourth grade. She is also working toward obtaining ESL and special education certifications. As a resident teacher, Horetsky worked in Kristi Rothrock’s third-grade class at Fink Elementary in September and October, and, since Rothrock has left the school, she will be paired with fourthgrade teacher Gail Jones from November through June. Reflecting on lessons

learned in her first months at Fink, Horetsky said, “The kids at Fink, and Mrs. Rothrock, have taught me how important it is to be another form of support for my students. (Mrs. Rothrock) has taught me how to manage classroom behavior, how important it is to allow students to selfregulate their behaviors, and how we can intervene when appropriate.” Horetsky said her ideal job would be teaching third grade at MASD. Alexis Imler is a resident teacher at Fink with first-grade teacher Jannelle Shuey. At PSU, Imler is studying prekindergarten through fourth-grade early childhood education with a certificate in ESL. While a student at Bedford High School, from which she graduated in 2016, she took dual enrollment classes at Allegheny College of Maryland, Penn Highlands Community College, and HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. Imler noted she enjoys working with students in all grade levels. “No matter where life takes me, if I have students, I

MASD holds strong values of family, compassion, and respect,” she said. Emma Lerchen is a resident teacher at Fink in Sherry Margucci’s first-grade class. Lerchen is a 2016 graduate of AnnvilleCleona High School and now studies elementary education for prekindergarten through fourth grade at Penn State. She said she enjoys working with students of all ages and would like to continue working in the local area after graduation. Of MASD, she said, “I love the close-knit community of the district and specifically Fink. Everyone is very welcoming and great at including us as resident teachers. I love connecting with my students, and I was very glad that we have such a great group of kids.” Kara Mancini is a resident teacher working with Jennifer Friedrichs, a sixthgrade math teacher at Middletown Area Middle School (MAMS). At PSU, Mancini is studying math education for elementary students in grades four through eight. She previously attended Slippery Rock University for two and a half years after graduating from Cedar Cliff High School in 2014. Her goal is to teach sixth- or seventhgrade students in a high-need school. She said she was placed at MAMS during her junior year and requested that she be placed there again as a resident teacher. Mancini said, “I love helping students know, no matter where they come from, that they are loved. I want them to love coming to school and being in my classroom because it’s a fun, safe, and comfortable learning space for them.”

The rain-or-shine event is handicapped-accessible. A suggested donation amount has been set. All proceeds will support CATRA in memory of Harrisburg native John Greenwood, a heart transplant recipient and a longtime CATRA volunteer, coach, and rider. Those who cannot attend in person will be able to take a virtual walk online, with more information available at www.catra.net. John, the son of Bob and Barb Greenwood, suddenly became ill with cardiomyopathy while running crosscountry at Penn Tech College. He was able to finish his senior year with an implanted L-VAD, and he received a new heart months after graduation. He worked as an engineer for five years and always returned to CATRA to volunteer. He passed away in 2016. Barb is organizing the dog walk.

Food for Thought “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” -John 15:13 Happy Veterans Day, everybody!

Winters Heritage House Museum will open its doors for the 29th annual Elizabethtown Heritage Craft Show on Friday, Nov. 8, and Saturday, Nov. 9. The museum will host more than 30 local merchants within the museum’s 1760s log and Victorian-era buildings, located at 47 E. High

St., Elizabethtown, a half block from the Elizabethtown Square. A Sneak-Peek Shopping Party will take place on Nov. 8 from 4 to 8 p.m. The public is invited to enjoy music and refreshments while meeting and interacting with local artists and craftspeople as well as shopping for locally made gifts, clothing, décor, and foods. Vendors are juried to ensure that items are hand-produced and of quality craftsmanship. The show will continue on Nov. 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The show is an effort to support local

artists and craftspeople, Four Diamonds, and the Elizabethtown Community Cupboard via an entrance request for food bank contributions. Ample parking is available in the museum lot, a nearby municipal lot, and at the Christ Lutheran Church two doors from the museum. The Winters Heritage House is a volunteer-run museum that seeks to use its community-rescued Colonial-era structures to enrich the town via classes, exhibits, lectures, events, and programs. Providing a platform for local creators and the public to come together is within its mission of giving back to the Elizabethtown community. For more information, readers may visit www.elizabethtownhistory.org or call 717-367-4672.

Items produced by more than 30 juried local artists and craftspeople will be available for purchase during the 29th annual Elizabethtown Heritage Craft Show on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8 and 9, at the Winters Heritage House Museum.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) awarded its 2019 Tri-State Architectural Excellence Design Award to the Office for Planning and Architecture (OPA), a Harrisburg firm. The award recognized OPA’s authorship of the Harrisburg Comprehensive Plan. The Harrisburg Comprehensive Plan received the highest level of recognition of any regional or urban design project. Bret Peters, AIA, principal at the Office for Planning and Architecture, accepted the award at a ceremony in Albany, N.Y. OPA received one of only six Bronze Awards selected from 160 submissions in eight categories. The AIA awards recognize significant achievement for design and contributions to a better and more sustainable built environment. The Harrisburg Comprehensive Plan identifies opportunities to improve management of the city’s built environment. It addresses development of new regional and community commercial districts and conservation of historic assets, parks, and

open spaces. The plan identifies the potential for a “maintenance industry” as a source of jobs and wealth creation. The plan seeks to increase local ownership, management, and upkeep of properties in the city. The Harrisburg Comprehensive Plan identifies three new planned commercial development areas. The plan’s recommendations include a proposed civic center adjacent to the new transit-oriented development area around the Harrisburg Transportation Center. The new civic center site would connect the residential Hill District to the downtown through the new Paxton Creek Greenway. The new greenway would repurpose land along the largely defunct industrial strip within the Paxton Creek floodplain as an ecological buffer and provide opportunities for recreation and limited, planned development. The Harrisburg City Planning Commission has approved the plan, which is awaiting final approval by the Harrisburg

HB McClure Supports School Projects This past summer, HB McClure Company donated money to local schools to support a variety of projects using DonorsChoose.org. This organization lets donors find classroom projects they would like to support and allows them to give money to those specific projects. DonorsChoose.org was started by a history teacher to allow the community to help support classrooms and specific projects for students. Any public school in the United States can fund projects through the site and connect with the local community. Some of the projects HB McClure sup-

ported were projects that helped children to increase their confidence in math, kept children cool during the summer heat, increased students’ understanding of how the body functions, helped students improved their coding knowledge, and helped children who may not have access to more than one meal a day.
