MAHS Band Receives Custom Bass Guitar every home football game to support the Blue Wave Marching Band. Betts started building guitars after watching online instructional videos. Betts now builds custom guitars for touring artists around the country. Some clients give him exact specifications for their dream guitars while others ask Betts for suggestions and input. He flew to Colorado to hand-deliver a custom guitar to professional bassist Andy Irvine. See Custom Guitar pg 9

Middletown VB Falls in District Quarterfinals October 30th opposite York Catholic. The Lady Raiders lost that match by a 3-0 final. “I was very proud of how my girls played,” said head coach Lisa Huber. “York Catholic is a strong, well-polished team and even though the scores didn’t show it, they gave it their all and never gave up.” Despite a 3-0 sweep that saw Middletown on the wrong end of 25-9, 25-16 and 25-17 games, Huber still said “it was a great
opportunity” for her squad’s first foray into the district pool. As the offense struggled the defense took center stage with Hannah Wilsbach (10 digs), Alexis Harmon (nine digs), Courtney Shaffer (seven digs) and Katie Knaub (five digs) leading the way. The Lady Raiders did manage to slip in a little offense with Harmon and Cassie Ebersole tallying a team high two kills while Shaffer registered a team high three assists. Knaub added two aces and one assist to her five digs.

The 28th annual Elizabethtown Heritage Craft Show will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Winters Heritage House Museum, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Free parking is available behind the museum in two municipal parking lots or in the nearby Christ Lutheran Church parking lot. An admission fee of a food bank contribution - whether that be a nonperishable item or a monetary donation - is requested. All items and money collected will be donated to the Elizabethtown Community Cupboard. “What we view as our purpose for this event is simply giving back to the community,” stated museum manager Maryann Swartz. “The community saved this building, and we feel this is one way that we can give back to the community.” The craft show exclusively features the work of 30 local artists and craftspeople. Due to the popularity of the show and limited space in the museum, Swartz noted that a
wait list of additional vendors has formed yet again this year. To qualify as a vendor for the show, an individual must be selling 100 percent locally handmade crafts, décor, or foods. Wares will be set up throughout the three historic buildings that make up the museum: two 1700s log homes and a brick Victorian house. Shoppers may browse a selection of jewelry, hand-forged iron, leather goods, turned wood, hand-knits, fused glass, holiday décor, hand-poured soaps and lotions, candles, Pennsylvania German scissor cuttings known as scherenschnitte, doll clothing, embroidery, handspun yarns, cookie cutters, and more. Hot food and baked goods will also be available to purchase, and museum volunteers will also supply light, complimentary refreshments. The museum will also offer a room of items created by museum committee members along with several baskets. A handmade quilt pieced together by the museum’s quilt committee and sporting a “Favorite Things” theme will be on display, and visitors may purchase tickets to enter a giveaway drawing for the quilt. Proceeds from the items in that room, as well as the quilt giveaway, will support the

Snowy Owl Program Set Ornithologist and author Scott Weidensaul will visit the East Shore Area Library, 4501 Ethel St., Harrisburg, to recount how Project SNOWstorm, a huge collaborative research effort, came together in a few weeks and continues to make discoveries about the life and ecology of the snowy owl. The program will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14. Four years ago, Project SNOWstorm was born when an unusually large invasion of snowy owls into the eastern United States occurred. Snowy owls that are tagged and tracked through Project
SNOWstorm provide researchers information about where the birds come from and where they go, how fast they move across the landscape, the types of habitats they use and more. Researchers have also been able to study the health of these birds and test for environmental toxins affecting the snowy owl population. The program is a partnership between the American Association of University Women (AAUW Harrisburg) and the Dauphin County Library System. No registration is required. For more information, readers may visit www.dcls.org/adult events or call 717-652-9380, ext. 1045.

Random Thought Life isn’t like a box of chocolates. It’s more like a jar of jalapenos. What you do today might burn your rear tomorrow. Recipe of the Week Sweet Potato Casserole This makes a great side dish for Thanksgiving dinner! Ingredients: 3 cups cooked and mashed sweet potatoes 2/3 cup sugar 1/2 cup butter, softened 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/3 cup milk
Topping: 1/3 cup butter, melted 1 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup flour 1 cup chopped pecans Directions: 1. Boil and mash sweet potatoes. 2. Beat in sugar, butter, eggs, vanilla, and milk until smooth and creamy. 3. Put in 9-by-13-inch greased pan. 4. To make topping, combine topping ingredients together in a small bowl. Stir and mix to combine. 5. Crumble topping over sweet potatoes. 6. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Tip of the Week Two tablespoons of baking soda added to boiling corn and cauliflower keeps the MAHS band director Sam Fisher (left) and student musician veggies crisp. Daniel Brenner (center) display the bass guitar built by Fact of the Week Middletown Area School District employee Darryl Betts. One hundred shares of McDonald’s stock purchased for $2,250 when first offered in Community Events 1965 has grown to 74,360 shares worth more than $12 million, as of Oct. 28, 2018. Thank You ONDONDERRY IRE OMPANY Thanks to Joe Hile of Lower Swatara Township for the Random Thought! So 2655 Foxiana Road, Middletown funny and so true! Thanks to Joan Stewart of Middletown for the Food for Thought! I miss you, Joanie! Food for Thought Thank God for dirty dishes, they have a tale to tell. While others may go hungry, we’ve eaten very well. With home, health & happiness; I shouldn’t want to fuss. By the stack of evidence, God’s been very good to us.

The program will include selections from the traditional choral repertoire, art songs, and folk songs from around the world. The concert will conclude with a performance by the combined choirs of Mack Wilberg’s “Anthem of Peace,” conducted by Linda L. Tedford, founder and artistic director of the Susquehanna Chorale. The Wilberg composition combines an Estonian folk song called “The Power of Song” with the American spiritual “We Shall Walk in the Valley of Peace.” It commemorates the Singing Revolution of 1987 to

50th Anniversary from pg 1 The Lenker Manor-Paxtang Women’s Club recently celebrated its 50th anniversary with a luncheon at the Susquehanna Club. The event was attended by 46 ladies, including the first club president, Bonnie Dando. In addition, 23 other past presidents were in attendance, including 11 who are no longer active members. Ensemble-in-Residence at Messiah College, the Susquehanna Chorale is an auditioned choir committed to artistic and expressive performance of a wide-ranging repertoire. Tedford and the chorale have received numerous accolades. The chorale is funded in part by the Cultural Enrichment Fund, the capital region’s united arts fund, and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
