A group of eighth-grade science students from Middletown Area Middle School went on a canoeing field trip on Oct. 15. The trip was led by teachers Mr. McCain and Mr. Vaughn in partnership with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. This foundation cooperates with school districts and other groups to inform and offer hands-on educational experiences. The trip was full of hands-on/minds-on educational activities that illustrated the relevance to the current science unit of study. The primary foundational concept was how both human and environmental actions affect local waterways. These issues are compounded as water travels through the local watershed, which eventually leads to the Chesapeake Bay. The purpose of the trip was to reinforce material that is being covered in the current eighthgrade science curriculum in accordance See Canoeing Trip pg 2

Great Turkey Hunt 5K To Support ECHOS Community One Walk Raises Funds For JDRF By Chelsea Peifer
It may not be every day that you have your eyes peeled for rogue turkeys, but runners in the Great Turkey Hunt 5K will be encouraged to be on the lookout for just that. Stuffed turkeys will be hidden along the course for participants to find and trade in afterward for a frozen turkey. But that’s not all - pie will be served after the race, and all proceeds from the event will support Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services (ECHOS). Race director Grace Wells explained that her husband, Chuck Wells, who also facilitates the annual Frozen Foot races in Elizabethtown, had always

Peter Mulvey, who says he has been a songwriter, road dog, raconteur, and almost-poet since before he can remember, will perform in concert on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the Fort Hunter Centennial Barn, 5300 N. Front St., Harrisburg. The event is sponsored by the Susquehanna Folk Music Society (SFMS). Mulvey’s musical repertoire spans rock ‘n’ roll, folk, jazz, spoken word, and Americana. During a semester abroad in Ireland, Mulvey began busking on Dublin’s Grafton Street and hitchhiking around the country, booking whatever gigs he could. On his return to the U.S., he spent a couple of years gigging in the Midwest before heading to Boston, where he took up busking in the subway and at coffeehouses. Small shows led to larger shows, and local gigs led to regional, national, and international touring. His varied career has included 18 recordings, one illustrated book, thousands of live performances, a TEDx talk, a decades-long association with the National Youth Science Camp, and opening for stars such as Ani DiFranco, Emmylou Harris, and Chuck Prophet. He has also
been featured on NPR, participated in an annual autumn bicycle tour, acted as the master of ceremonies at festivals, and hosted his own boutique festival, the Lamplighter Sessions in Boston and his native Wisconsin. Separate ticket prices have been set for general admission, for SFMS members, and for students ages 3 to 22. To purchase tickets, readers may visit www.brownpapertickets.com or call 800838-3006. This concert is presented in association with Dauphin County Parks and Recreation. Funding for Susquehanna Folk Music Society concerts is provided by the Cultural Enrichment Fund and by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, administered locally by the Cultural Alliance of York County. More information is available by visiting www.sfmsfolk.org or calling 717-745-6577. T-shirts will be available to purchase on the day of the event while supplies last. Post-race festivities, in addition to pie, will include the presentation of awards to the overall top male and female finishers, as well as age group awards to the first-, second-, and third-place finishers in each of the 10-year age groups. Additionally, everyone will receive a participant medal. As mentioned, proceeds from the race will be used in partnership with ECHOS to support local families in need this holiday season. According to Farling, ECHOS currently operates 12 programs - three of which focus on housing - to meet the needs of residents in the Elizabethtown area. “Last year we invested over $72,000 into the community to address client needs,” noted Farling. From July 2018 to July 2019, ECHOS served a total of 750 people. “(The Great Turkey Hunt 5K) is a great opportunity for anyone looking for a way to impact their neighbors,” Farling remarked. Volunteers are needed to help in various capacities at the Great Turkey Hunt 5K. To sign up to volunteer, interested individuals may email vgwells@comcast.net. ECHOS representatives will be at the Great Turkey Hunt 5K to provide information and answer questions about the organization. Volunteers are always needed at ECHOS, and people may visit www.facebook.com/ECHOSLancaster/ to learn more about those opportunities.

When ECHOS executive director Deb Jones spoke at their church, Elizabethtown United Church of Christ, last year, Chuck and Grace talked to her about the possibility of hosting a race to benefit ECHOS. Chuck and Grace got to work and planned the inaugural Great Turkey Hunt 5K, which took place on Thanksgiving Day in 2018, with 108 participants. “Our mission at ECHOS is to mobilize communities to provide services that prevent and alleviate poverty and empower stability in our neighbors, and this (event) is such great evidence of that happening,” said ECHOS assistant director Leigh Ann Farling. “We want to express how thankful we are to have had Chuck and Grace come to us and offer to do this.” This year’s Great Turkey Hunt 5K race will begin at 8:15 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 28, at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown. COMMUNITYCOURIER - Middletown Edition -
Students from pg 1 An 11th-grader and a first-grader in Lower Dauphin School District were recently recognized by Lower Dauphin Communities That Care and Hummelstown Police for doing the right thing. Lower Dauphin High School student Thomas Gahring was recognized for finding and turning in cash he found in the hallway. He was nominated by teacher David Machamer. At Londonderry Elementary School, first-grader Wyatt O’Sick found a lighter on the ground at recess and immediately reported it to an adult to keep his classmates safe. Thomas and Wyatt were recognized with gift cards, Do the Right Thing T-shirts and certificates, and Papa John’s pizza coupons. This month’s program sponsor was the Rotary Club of Hummelstown.
The Do the Right Thing program is modeled after a national program. Now in its 13th year, the program recognizes students in the Lower Dauphin community who have distinguished themselves through their accomplishments, attitude or outstanding efforts. This program provides a way to recognize good deeds and reinforce exemplary behavior. School staff members and police officers typically nominate students whose positive actions come to their attention, but any adult over the age of 18 can nominate a child. A volunteer committee reviews the student nominations on a monthly basis and selects a winner. For more information, readers may contact Angela Durantine at adurantine@ldsd.org. Pictured on front:

Storytelling Event Planned
Organizations To Host “Elizabethtown Is Extraordinary” By Chelsea Peifer
Tellabration, a worldwide storytelling celebration, will be held on Saturday, Nov. 23, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the latest at the Square Bean Carlisle, 25 W. High St., across from the Carlisle Theater. There will be no admission fee. At this round-robin olio, in the informal back-porch tradition, members of the Susquehanna StoryTellers Guild will share new and traditional stories to be enjoyed by adults and young people, but not small children. Audience members are encouraged to sign up for a chance to tell their own stories too, in a nonjudgmental, openmic format. For more information, readers may call Spike Spilker at 717-737-8438. The Square Bean’s full menu of food and beverages will be available for purchase. The venue does not sell alcohol, but attendees are permitted to bring their own beverages. Onstreet parking is free after 4 p.m. The Susquehanna StoryTellers Guild promotes the art and regular practice of storytelling for people of all ages, from folk tales to personal stories. Its members include storytellers for hire, people who tell for personal enjoyment, and listeners. For information about the guild or to locate and book a storyteller, readers may call Spilker.
At its core, Lancaster County’s Extraordinary Give event is a celebration of giving. This year, several Elizabethtownbased nonprofit organizations are teaming up to celebrate together. The community is invited to join the fun at Elizabethtown Is Extraordinary from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, in the gymnasium at Mount Calvary Christian School (MCCS), 629 N. Holly St., Elizabethtown. Free food and beverages, live acoustic music performed by Common Vine, door prizes, and children’s activities will be awaiting those who attend Elizabethtown Is Extraordinary. Representatives from the following organizations will be on-site with information, prizes, and activities and to answer questions about the ways that they are serving the community and world: Bible2School, Brittany’s Hope, Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC), Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services (ECHOS), Elizabethtown Fire Department, Elizabethtown Historical Society, Elizabethtown Public Library, Hope Within Ministries, MCCS, Northwest EMS, and Pennsylvania Adult & Teen Challenge/Naaman Center. Giving stations will be set up so that people may contribute toward the organization of their choice. Hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF), the Extraordinary Give is an annual celebration of giving that enables dona-
tions made to any of the participating organizations during a designated 24hour period to be increased thanks to a stretch pool made possible by LCCF, presenting sponsors Rodgers & Associates and the High Foundation, and other community supporters. From midnight to 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 22, people may donate online at www.extragive.org or at the giving stations that will be set up during collaborative events throughout the county, including Elizabethtown Is Extraordinary. “Aside from the (financial) support, it’s an opportunity for the community to learn about us,” said Anne Marie McAlester, executive director of Hope Within Ministries, which operates the Hope Within
Community Health Center and Hope Within Counseling. “And it has been a great networking event for all of us to work together.” “It’s an event that allows us to collectively demonstrate what we each do for the community,” added Lori Shenk, community outreach manager for Northwest EMS. MCCS director of development April Miller said that approximately 250 people attended last year’s inaugural Elizabethtown Is Extraordinary event at the school, and organizers would like to see that number doubled this year. To learn more, readers may search for “Elizabethtown Is Extraordinary!” on Facebook.
The community is invited to Elizabethtown Is Extraordinary, a collaborative event featuring live music, free food and beverages, door prizes, children’s activities, and giving stations from 5 to 8 p.m. during the Extraordinary Give on Nov. 22 at Mount Calvary Christian School (MCCS). Representing some of the participating organizations are (front, from left) Anne Marie McAlester, Seema Tailor, Carrie McCullough, Allison Bridgeman, Jen Fontana, April Miller, Tricia Morris, (back) Peter Graustein, Meghan Phillips, Lori Shenk, Ken Shaffer, Mark Hershey, and Rob Roberge.

only things that remain in your life are the things for which you thank God: The alarm didn’t go off! Where did the alarm clock go? Oh, I forgot to thank God for it. Well, I’ll have to be late for work. Work? Did I thank God for my job? Oh well, I guess I won’t have to worry about being late for work; I don’t have a job any more. But I did thank God for my meals. At least I won’t go hungry. What’s this in the mail? An eviction notice! Oh no! I forgot to thank God for my home! And the telephone has been quiet all morning. Oops, no telephone. Well, I’ll use a pay phone. Where’s my car? What happened to my pocket change? Who was I going to call anyway? Oh, I’ve never thanked the Lord for my friends. Well, at least I have my health. Have I ever thanked the Lord for my health? There are so many things in this life for which we fail to thank the Lord. Your talents, your family and friends, the beauty of creation, all of these and much more are gifts from your heavenly Father. Today ask God to give you a thankful heart and acknowledge your dependence on His good gifts.
Happy Anniversary Happy anniversary to Royalton’s favorite couple, Tom and Judy Oxenford! This fantastic duo was married on Nov. 23, 1969. Congratulations, Judy and Tom! Recipe of the Week Thanksgiving Acorn Treats Ingredients 2 bags Hershey Kisses 2 bags Kraft Caramel Bits (found in baking aisle) 1 bag Nutter Butter Bites (found in cookie aisle) 1 pouch cookie icing (baking aisle) Directions 1. Attach one Hershey Kiss to one side of nutter butter bites using peanut butter already on cookie 2. Cut caramel bits in half. 3. Squeeze a tiny drop of cookie icing on top of the Nutter Butter ‘cap’. 4. Attach one half caramel bit using icing. 5. Pop in mouth and enjoy! Tip of the Week When making your Thanksgiving turkey, plan accordingly on the morning of Thanksgiving for when to cook your turkey. Remember that the longer your turkey sits, the juicier it gets! Fact of the Week We are so used to eating our meals with a knife and fork that we might find it hard to believe that people ate in any other way (apart from with their hands). The first Thanksgiving dinners were eaten with knives and spoons as the Pilgrims did not bring forks with them on their voyage across the ocean. In fact, it was the 18th century before they really caught on in America. Joke of the Week “Thanksgiving dinners take 18 hours to prepare. They are consumed in 12 minutes. Halftimes take 12 minutes. This is not coincidence.” - Erma Bombeck “You can tell you ate too much for Thanksgiving when you have to let your bathrobe out.” - Jay Leno “Cooking Tip: Wrap turkey leftovers in aluminum foil and throw them out.” Nicole Hollander “I come from a family where gravy is considered a beverage.” - Erma Bombeck Food for Thought True healing will always begin with your thoughts. Master your thoughts and you will master your life. Have a great week, everybody!
