How Small Businesses Give Back

MIDDLETOWN EDITION

Information from the Small Business Administration (SBA) and the U.S. Census Bureau’s Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs says that small businesses, or firms with fewer than 500 workers, accounted for 99.7% of businesses in 2016, the most recent year for data. Firms with fewer than 100 workers accounted for 98.2% of companies. Thanks to their influence and reach, small businesses have the potential to impact local communities in numerous ways. Small businesses employ local residents. According to the SBA’s Office of Advocacy, small businesses accounted for 61.8% of net new jobs in the United States between 1993 and 2016. Small businesses are innovative. The SBA notes that small businesses represent about 96% of employer firms in high-patenting manufacturing industries. That suggests that small businesses are full of new ideas.

The Central Pennsylvania World War II (WWII) Roundtable will meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5. The meeting will be held at Grace United Methodist Church, 433 E. Main St., Hummelstown. The guest speaker will be 95year-old Allentown resident Clarence Smoyer, whose exploits in the 3rd Armored, or “Spearhead,” Division garnered attention at least twice in his life. The first time was during the Battle for Cologne in March 1945, when a combat photographer caught a duel between his Pershing tank and a German Panther tank on film, which played in newsreels around the country. More

recently, author Adam Makos made Smoyer a subject of his bestseller, “Spearhead: An American Tank Gunner, His Enemy, and a Collision of Lives in World War II.” This past September, Smoyer, the last living member of the Pershing tank crew that destroyed the German Panther, was awarded a Bronze Star for heroism during a ceremony at the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. Three more Bronze Stars were awarded posthumously to his fellow crew members. The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable is a nonprofit organization that provides a forum for World War II

Concert from pg 1 “Joy to the Burg: The Gift of Music to Help the Homeless” was envisioned by philanthropist and musician Sheldon Jones of the band Loco Lobo. Jones said that he and his wife moved to Harrisburg approximately two years ago and soon noticed the number of homeless people in the downtown area. Jones, who had returned to playing the guitar in his retirement, conceived the idea for the benefit concert and spoke to Tom Sweet, pastor at Market Square Presbyterian Church (MSPC) in downtown Harrisburg, where Jones attends. Sweet suggested Christian Churches United (CCU) as a beneficiary for the concert. The album was released on Nov. 7 at CCU’s United In Love Banquet. Many of the tracks on “Joy to the Burg” are traditional Christmas carols. The contributing artists are Shea Quinn, Anthony Pieruccini Trio, Canaan’s Land, Crossfire3, Steve Rudolph Trio, The Goods, Grant Bryan Band, Leap of Faith, Grumpy, Loco Lobo, No Last

Call, Ryan Chilcote, Dred “Perky” Scott and the Steve Rudolph Trio, and the Susquehanna Chorale. The album is available for purchase on compact disc or by digital download at www.Joy totheBurg.com. Separate suggested donations have been set for the CD and for downloads. More information is available by visiting the aforementioned website or calling the CCU offices at 717-230-9550. All album and concert proceeds will benefit the homelessness programs of Christian Churches United: HELP Ministries and Susquehanna Harbor Safe Haven. HELP Ministries is a walk-in assistance office for people in crisis. The office seeks to prevent homelessness whenever possible and help those who are homeless to quickly find long-term housing. Short-term shelter access is available when necessary. In April, CCU and MSPC led a new initiative that places a HELP staff member at MSPC to directly connect with people living on the street. Hi, everyone! Happy Thanksgiving! I have so many things to be thankful for, I could never finish the list. One of the things I am thankful for is you! I am thankful for every single one of my readers! Thank you! This Week’s Obscure (and not-so-obscure!) Holidays Nov. 27 - Pins and Needles Day. The real origin of this special day goes back to the labor movement in the 1930s. The pro-labor Broadway musical “Pins and Needles” opened on this day in 1937 at the Labor Stage Theater in New York City. This play was written by Harold Rome. It was produced by the International Ladies Garment Workers’ Union. Union members made up the cast. It ran for 1,108 performances, once holding the record for longevity. Nov. 28 - THANKSGIVING DAY! The first Thanksgiving was celebrated between the Pilgrims and the Native Americans in 1621. That first feast was a three-day event. Life for the early settlers was difficult. The fall harvest was time for celebration. It was also a time of prayer, thanking God for a good crop. Nov. 29 - Black Friday. In accounting, red signifies a loss and

black signifies a profit. For many retailers, the Christmas holiday sales season represents one half to three quarters of their annual sales. Often, retailers are losing money until holiday sales begin. Holiday sales formally begin on the day after Thanksgiving. So, Black Friday represents that turning point, from a loss towards big profits! Nov. 30 - Small Business Saturday. Get out there and “shop small” to support the local small businesses in our community! Dec. 1 - Eat a Red Apple Day. Apples are delicious. Apples are nutritious. That’s a great combination. Dec. 2 - National Fritters Day. A fritter is a fried cake or dough with fruit or meats inside. Whatever you do, do not fritter this day away without eating at least one fritter! Dec. 3 - National Roof Over Your Head Day. For most of us, a roof over our head signifies living in a house that protects us from the elements, keeping us warm, dry, and cozy. Unfortunately, not everyone is as lucky as you and me. There are many people who do not have a home to keep them comfortable and safe. Spend a few moments being thankful that you are not homeless, appreciating your roof and home today. Also, if you can, please make a contribution to a homeless shelter, so others can come in out of the cold. This week of Thanksgiving is an especially perfect time for this. A Thanksgiving Forecast... Turkeys will thaw in the morning, then warm in the oven to an afternoon high near 190 F. The kitchen will turn hot and humid, and if you bother the cook, be ready for a severe squall or cold shoulder. During the late afternoon and evening, the cold front of a knife will slice through the turkey, causing an accumulation of one to two inches on plates. Mashed potatoes will drift across one side while cranberry sauce creates slippery spots on the other. Please pass the gravy. A weight watch and indigestion warning have been issued for the entire area, with increased stuffiness around the beltway. During the evening, the turkey will diminish and taper off to leftovers, dropping to a low of 34 F in the refrigerator. Looking ahead to Friday and Saturday, high pressure to eat sandwiches will be established. Flurries of leftovers can be expected both days with a 50% chance of scattered soup late in the day. We expect a warming trend where soup develops. By early next week, eating pressure will be low as the only wish left will be the bone.

Did you not say, at the scene of the accident, ‘I’m fine!’?” Clyde said, “Well, I had just got Bessie into the trailer and I was driving down the road...” The lawyer interrupted again and said, “Judge, I am trying to establish the fact that, at the scene of the accident, this man told the highway patrolman on the scene that he was just fine. Now, several weeks after the accident, he is trying to sue my client. I believe he is a fraud. Please tell him to simply answer the question.” By this time, the judge was fairly interested in Clyde’s answer and said to the lawyer, “I’d like to hear what he has to say about his favorite mule, Bessie.” Clyde thanked the judge and proceeded, “Well, as I was saying, I had just loaded Bessie, my favorite mule, into the trailer and was driving her down the highway when this huge semi-truck and trailer ran the stop sign and smacked my truck right in the side. I was thrown into one ditch, and Bessie was thrown into the other. I was hurting real bad and didn’t want to move. However, I could hear ole Bessie moaning and groaning. I knew she was in terrible shape just by her groans. “Shortly after the accident, a highway patrolman came on the scene. He could hear Bessie moaning and groaning, so he went over to her. After he looked at her, he took out his gun and shot her between the eyes. Then the patrolman came across the road, gun in hand, looked at me and asked, ‘How are you feeling?’ Now, judge, what would YOU say?”

The AACA Museum Inc., 161 Museum Drive, Hershey, has announced the donation and debut of an automotive sculpture, “New York to Paris, ’08.” The highly detailed, limited edition bronze sculpture is now on exhibition at the museum. Automotive artist Stanley Wanlass created “New York to Paris, ’08” in 1982 in tribute to America’s pioneering spirit. The 125-pound bronze sculpture depicts the winning Thomas Flyer in action. Only 30 handsigned and numbered copies were produced and sold to collectors and museums. This example is the first one, the artist’s per-

sonal proof. It was sold by the artist to Howard Scotland in 1987 and was donated to the AACA Museum in memory of Howard by his wife, Judith Scotland, of Cheyenne, Wyo. At the turn of the 20th century, the automobile was a relatively new and generally untested mode of transportation. To raise confidence in their product and gain exposure, manufacturers routinely participated in endurance runs, competitive races, and all types of motorsports contests that were promoted by newspapers and other types of print media. tors and took the automobile to places it had literally never before traveled. Six international teams representing four different nations began the race in New York City. Few paved roads - and often no roads at all - awaited them in a marathon that lasted 169 days - a motorsports record that stands today. After reaching San Francisco, the cars were transported by boat to Alaska, Japan, and Siberia. Along the way, they encountered a host of impediments before the lone American entry - a 1907 Thomas Flyer built in Buffalo, N.Y. - arrived in Paris. The New York Times and the Paris paper Le Matin provided daily front-page updates sent to them via telegraph from across the world. The winning Thomas Flyer is enshrined in the National Automobile Museum in Reno, Nev., and the race is the subject of numerous documentaries. The AACA Museum Inc. is an independent, nonprofit organization that is not affiliated with The Antique Automobile Club of America. The museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, readers may call 717-566-7100 or visit www.AACAMuseum.org.

Will Host Auditions Hershey Area Playhouse, 830 Cherry Drive, Hershey, will host auditions for its first show of the 2020 season, “Love, Loss and What I Wore,” a play based on the 1995 book of the same name. Auditions will be held on Monday, Dec. 9, and Tuesday, Dec. 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. The play is made up of monologues and ensemble pieces about women. The script is available online through the playhouse’s Dropbox account. Women interested in auditioning can come prepared with a monologue of their choosing or one from the show. The show will be directed by Jennifer Feldser and produced by Kristin Einsel, and performances will take place in February.
