Each December, train lovers of all ages flock to Elizabethtown to enjoy two elaborate miniature train displays located about a mile and a half apart from each other: the Train Guys at the Elizabethtown Public Library and the Masonic Village & Elizabethtown (MV&E) Model Railroad Club. The Train Guys, comprising approximately 20 volunteers, have been at work since October setting up a train display that fills the basement of the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St. O-gauge trains run through detailed towns decorated for the holidays, and there are areas featuring G-scale and standard-gauge trains and accessories. Describing the display as highly interactive, Train Guy Craig Coble noted that it features 50 buttons for folks to press. “The trains range in age from 100 years old to brand new,” Coble noted. “We’ll be showing things that are very unusual and appreciated by collectors and things that will appeal to children, such as Chuggington and Thomas.” This year, the east end of the display has been reconfigured to include an elevated line. Local business Groff ’s Meats will be featured on a bi-level stock car.

Train Guy Tom Matesevac noted that the club has featured an area business for years, and a limited number of the featured train cars are also available to purchase. Visitors may enter to win other train items in a silent auction and giveaway drawings. The 2018 display will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in December; from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 1, 8, and 15; and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 22 and 29, in the lower level of the Elizabethtown Public Library. The exhibit will also be open from 6 to 8 p.m. for Second Friday on Dec. 14. Private showings are available by calling 717-367-7467. Admission is by suggested donation, with all proceeds supporting the library. According to Coble, the Train Guys raise approximately $10,000 for the library each year. To see past years’ displays and previews for this year, readers may search for “The Train Guys” on YouTube. Masonic Village, which is home to the MV&E Model Railroad Club, has provided a free shuttle bus service that will transport visitors to and from the Masonic Village Health Care Center, 1 Masonic Drive, and the Elizabethtown Public Library. The shuttle will run on a continuous loop when the MV&E train display is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 1, 8, and 15. On these days, the last

“Toyland” is the Keystone Capital Chorus’ first holiday show in the past 10 years. The men’s chorus and three of its in-house barbershop quartets will present the show on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 2 p.m. in the Rife Center at Bethany Village, 325 Wesley Drive, Mechanicsburg. The chorus has been entertaining central Pennsylvanians since 1946 with a repertoire that includes show tunes as well as inspirational, romantic, classic, patriotic and contemporary songs, along with seasonal music. It is directed by Bobby Bennett of Mechanicsburg. Featured quartets for the show

will be Grumpy Old Men, One Night Only and Gents Nite Out. Seasonal tunes will include “Carol of the Bells,” “The Christmas Song,” “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” “Mary Had a Baby,” “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” “Auld Lang Syne,” “Toyland” and more. Adding to the merriment will be an appearance by Vintage Brass, a quintet of professional musicians from the greater Harrisburg area. Ticket prices have been set, with a discount for students. Tickets are available by calling 717-766-8127 or visiting www.kccsing.com, as well as at the door.

The Train Guys set up an elaborate interactive miniature train display in the basement of the Elizabethtown Public Library for the month of December, with proceeds from admission benefiting the library. Masonic Village will offer a free shuttle service between the library and the MV&E Model Railroad Club on Dec. 1, 8, and 15. shuttle back to Masonic Village will leave the library at 3:45 p.m. The MV&E display will also be open to the public from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 2. Admission is by donation. Signposts on the grounds of Masonic Village provide directions to the Model Railroad Club. MV&E hosts open houses throughout the year to showcase its breathtaking miniature train display, which is home to seven operating gauges: Z, N, HO, S, G, and standard scales, as well as three-rail O scale. Plus, visitors will be wowed by O-scale trolleys running along two rails with overhead power and details including an ornate replica of the iconic Star Barn and its outbuildings. Club member Bill Fishel noted that the trains are all operated under an automatic control system and not run by comput-

ers. The operating system was conceived by member Mel Fisher, a B&O Railroad retiree. The club celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2018, and members are continually enhancing the enormous layout. Two cameras allow visitors to see bigscreen views of the trains on the move. Member Frederick Wuestner explained that one camera features an adjustable height monitor for handicapped-accessibility. “Someone with a wheelchair can enjoy it just as much as anyone else,” Wuestner pointed out. Interactive buttons one of which will set off smoke in a control tower surrounded by fire engines - have also been added to the display in the past year. For more details on the train displays, readers may visit www.etownpubliclibrary.org or www.mvemodelrrclub.com.

Find in each a worthy trait That we shall gladly cultivate; See in each one passing by The better things that beautify: A softly spoken word of cheer, A kindly face, a smile sincere. I pray each day that we may view The things that warm one’s heart anew; The kindly deed that can’t be bought That only from good are wrought, A burden lightened here and there, A brother lifted from despair, The aged ones freed from distress; The lame, the sick, brought happiness. Grant that before each sun has set We’ll witness deeds we can’t forget; A soothing hand to one in pain, A sacrifice for love - not gain; A word to ease the troubled mind Of one whom fate has dealt unkind. So, friend, my wish is that we may See good in all who pass our way. Recipe of the Week Twix Cookie Bars Ingredients: 1 roll (16.5 ounces) refrigerated sugar cookies 1 bag (11 ounces) caramels, unwrapped 1/3 cup heavy whipping cream 1 1/2 cups milk chocolate chips 3 Twix cookie bars (1.79 ounces each), chopped (about 1 cup chopped) Directions: 1. Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Line 13-by-9-inch pan with foil, leaving extra hanging off sides; spray bottom with cooking spray. Press dough in bottom of pan; bake 20 minutes. Cool 5 minutes on cooling rack. 2. In two-quart saucepan, heat caramels and whipping cream over medium heat 5 to 10 minutes, stirring constantly, until caramels are melted. Remove from heat. Spread over warm cookie base. 3. Bake 5 minutes; return to cooling rack. Sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over top; let stand 2 to 3 minutes. Spread melted chips evenly over filling. Let cool 30 minutes. Sprinkle with Twix bar pieces; pressing in lightly. 4. Refrigerate bars until chocolate is firm, about 1 hour. Remove from pan using foil as handles. Cut into 4 rows by 3 rows; cut each bar in half diagonally for a total of 24 triangleshaped bars. Tip of the Week To easily line the bottom of the pan for bar cookies, turn upside down and form foil around bottom and sides. Flip pan over, and place foil insert inside pan for a perfect fit! Fact of the Week These days “Black Friday signals the start of the holiday shopping season. But the Philadelphia Police Department began using the term in the 1960s in an attempt to deter people from shopping. Joke of the Week Farmer Jack once lived on a quiet rural highway, but as time went by, the traffic slowly built up and eventually got so heavy and so fast that his free-range chickens were being run over at a rate of three to six per week.

So Farmer Jack called the local police station to complain. “You’ve got to do something about all these people driving so fast and killing all my chickens, he said to the local police officer. “What do you want me to do? asked the policeman. “I don’t care. Just do something about those crazy drivers! So the next day, the policeman had the council erect a sign that said, “School Crossing. Three days later, Farmer Jack called the policeman and said, “You’ve still got to do something about these drivers. The ‘School Crossing’ sign seems to make them go even faster! So again, they put up a new sign. It said, “Slow: Children at Play. That really sped them up. So Farmer Jack called and said, “Your signs are no good. Can I put up my own sign? In order to get Farmer Jack off his back, the policeman said, “Sure. Put up your own sign. The phone calls to the police station stopped, but curiosity got the better of the officer, so he called Farmer Jack and said, “How is the problem with the speeding drivers? Did you put up your sign? “Oh, I sure did, and not one chicken has been killed. The policeman was really curious and thought he had better go out and take a look at the sign. He also thought the sign might be something the police could use elsewhere to slow drivers down. So he drove out to Farmer Jack’s house. His jaw dropped the moment he saw the sign. It said, “Nudist Colony. Slow down and watch for chicks! Thank You Thanks to my future daughterin-law Amber Topper of Royalton for the recipe! I’m glad you love Twix candy! Thanks to my email best friend, Francis Kasper of Middletown, for the joke again! You are a hoot, Francis! Food for Thought If you have a family that loves you, a few good friends, food on your table and a roof over your head, you are richer than you think. Happy holidays, everyone!

They do a nice job and play hard. They run to the ball and it turns out OK.” Middletown aided the Conwell-Egan push with turnovers, the first of which kick started the Eagles second half surge. The Blue Raiders were looking to continue their first half success on the opening drive of the third quarter and appeared to do just that by marching 64 yards on seven plays. However, on the eighth play of the drive, a first and goal attempt from the Egan four-yard line, a bad handoff put the ball on the turf with the Eagles recovering to end Photo by Cheri Sine the Blue Raider scoring threat. 2017’s PIAA semifinal foe, Conwell Egan, in the team’s 2018 PIAA-3A quarterfinal clash. The Blue Raiders were unable to match last year’s 49-7 dismantling of the Eagles but a hard fought 21-14 victory at Milton Hershey on November 23rd kept Middletown’s title game march going. “It was a very physical game going back and forth, and kind of turned out like I expected it to, hard fought,” stated head coach Brett Myers. “They had a lot of motivation going in. They have been talking about this. We try

made it a 14-7 game near the midway point of the third quarter. Momentum appeared to shift squarely to the Eagle sideline as Middletown’s ensuing drive stalled near midfield forcing a punt back to Conwell Egan. The Blue Raider defense had other ideas with Trayvon Joseph falling on an Eagle fumble to set up the offense with a very short field. The opportunity was not wasted as Jose Lopez capped his 259-yard, three score day with a six-yard plunge. Lopez’s final score pushed the lead back to 14-points at 21-7 with 1:53 remaining in the third. Another Middletown miscue setup Conwell Egan’s next score and the Eagles happily took advantage. Middletown’s defense followed Lopez’s score with another turnover on downs, their fourth of the game, but the Blue Raider offense was unable to get anything going. The miscue came via a bad punt snap that left punter Avery Williams scrambling to fall on the ball. Williams did manage to cover the ball but Conwell Egan was able to convert the short field into a 22-yard Harris TD with 7:49 remaining in the game. a 21-14 game, and set the stage for the Blue Raider defense to shine. They did just that by forcing their fifth turnover on downs to keep it a 21-14 game. Middletown was unable to get anything going on the ensuing possession, managing just 15 yards, but the Blue Raiders did burn over two-minutes of game time with the short drive. Middletown’s defense had one last bit of magic left and it was needed as Conwell Egan took four plays and a Blue Raider penalty to cover 53 yards. That put the Eagles just 31 yards away from a tie game with just over a minute remaining. The Middletown magic came through when Gage Radabaugh pounced on a bad Eagle snap putting his Blue Raiders a few Scott Ash

kneel downs from a 12-1 record. The defense may have captured the spotlight in the second half but it was Lopez leading the way through the opening two quarters. The junior standout racked up 193 of his game high 259 yards during the initial 24 minutes which included scoring runs of 88 and 46 yards. Ash finished the game with 46 yards through the air with Lamar Ventura responsible for 41 of those yards. Middletown’s postseason sequel run will continue on Friday November 30th or Saturday December 1st with another battle opposite Scranton Prep. The Blue Raiders face the Cavaliers in this year’s 3A semifinal round after bouncing those same Cavaliers from the previous two PIAA quarterfinal rounds. Site and game time were not available at press time.

Home Improvements

Brittany’s Hope from pg 1 By Chelsea Peifer

Christmas at the Star Barn Village at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown, is an event brimming with fun and festive family activities, but one of the best parts may be that those who attend can find joy in knowing that they are taking part in something that will benefit orphaned children around the world. Proceeds from the event, which is set to take place on Saturday, Dec. 1, will benefit Brittany’s Hope. Wagon rides complete with hot cocoa, opportunities to have photographs taken with Santa Claus, a petting zoo, a campfire with s’mores, pony rides, cookie decorating, and a chance to visit the freshly restored and relocated Star Barn and its outbuildings will all be included with general admission to the event, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. An additional option to purchase VIP admission is also available and will allow folks to take part in all of the general admission activities along with a special breakfast with Santa Claus in the Star Barn from 8 to 10 a.m. Gifts from Santa will also be included with VIP admission. To purchase general admission or VIP tickets, interested individuals may visit www.brittanys hope.org/christmas/. A limited number of VIP tickets are available, so organizers encourage interested individuals to register while supplies last. Food and beverages will be available to purchase throughout the day for an additional cost, along with tickets to enter to win various giveaways. Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director of Brittany’s Hope, explained that funds raised through Christmas at the Star Barn Village will go toward building an adaptive living facility for children with disabilities in Vietnam. According to Sahd, Brittany’s Hope has been working

with Ha Tinh Village, an orphanage located in a remote rural region of northern Vietnam, to help provide basic living needs for more than 50 abandoned children. Currently, the orphanage has a separate area for children with profound mental and/or physical disabilities. Sahd noted that in Vietnam, children with disabilities can be left with nowhere to go and nowhere to find dignity. The portion of Ha Tinh Village devoted to housing children with disabilities is in need of upgrades, and Brittany’s Hope has pledged $100,000 to build a facility specifically designed for those with special needs at Ha Tinh Village. Plans for the new facility include a safe living space and bedrooms for up to 28 children, specialized adaptive furniture and bathrooms, a fully equipped physical therapy room, and a common area for the children to move and play. The funds will also allow for trained professionals to help the youths to develop living skills and a nursing station to provide medical care around the clock. Sahd noted that 100 percent of donations toward the project will go directly toward the Ha Tinh Village building project, because all non-program expenses such as fundraising and overhead are covered by a corporate benefactor. To learn more about the work of Brittany’s Hope, readers may visit www.brittanyshope.org. Pictured on Christmas at the Star Barn Village in Elizabethtown, set to take place on Dec. 1, will feature wagon rides, visits with Santa Claus, a petting zoo, cookie decorating, and more. Proceeds from the event will support the efforts of Brittany’s Hope, a nonprofit organization committed to helping children in need around the globe.
