Neighborhood represents immortality. It represents the crown of thorns worn by our Savior. The red holly berries represent the blood shed by Him.â€? Next he pulled from his bag a GIFT and said, “Teach the children that God so loved the world that he gave his begotten son.â€? Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift. Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a CANDY CANE and hung it on the tree. “Teach the children that the candy cane represents the shepherds’ crook. The crook on the staff helps to bring back strayed sheep to the flock. The candy cane is the symbol that we are our brother’s keeper.â€? He reached in again and pulled out an ANGEL. “Teach the children that it was the angels that heralded in the glorious news of the Savior’s birth. The angels sang Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace and good will toward men.â€? Suddenly I heard a soft twinkling sound, and from his bag he pulled out a BELL. “Teach the children that as the lost sheep are found by the sound of the bell, it should ring mankind to the fold. The bell symbolizes guidance and return. Santa looked back and was pleased. He looked back at me, and I saw that the twinkle was back in his eyes. He said, “Remember, teach the children the true meaning of Christmas and do not put me in the center, for I am but a humble servant of the One that is, and I bow down to worship him, our LORD, our GOD.â€? Random Thought I tried to send you something really cute for Christmas, but the mailman pulled the stamp off my forehead and told me to get out of the mailbox. Recipe of the Week Christmas Meatballs Ingredients: 2 large eggs, lightly beaten 1 envelope onion soup mix 1/2 cup seasoned bread crumbs 1/4 cup chopped dried cranberries 2 tablespoons minced fresh parsley 1-1/2 pounds lean ground beef (90 percent lean) Sauce: 1 can (14 ounces) whole-berry cranberry sauce 3/4 cup ketchup 1/2 cup beef broth 3 tablespoons brown sugar 3 tablespoons finely chopped onion 2 teaspoons cider vinegar
Directions: 1. In a large bowl, combine first five ingredients. Add beef; mix lightly but thoroughly. Shape into 1-inch balls. 2. Place a third of the meatballs on a microwave-safe plate. Cover with waxed paper; microwave on high until cooked through, 2-3 minutes. Drain on paper towels. Repeat twice with remaining meatballs. 3. In a 2-quart microwave-safe dish, mix sauce ingredients. Microwave, covered, on high until heated through, 3-4 minutes, stirring halfway. Gently stir in meatballs. Microwave, covered, on high until heated through, 1-2 minutes. Christmas Tip Remove stubborn price tags or stickers on some of the gifts you may buy by covering them with several coats of vinegar and letting the liquid soak in for five minutes. Then just wipe away the residue! Voila! Christmas Fact An artificial spider and web are often included in the decorations on Ukrainian Christmas trees. A spider web found on Christmas morning is believed to bring good luck. Joke of the Week It was a few days before Christmas. The trip went reasonably well, and he was ready to go back home. The airport on the other end had turned a tacky red and green, and loudspeakers blared annoying elevator renditions of cherished Christmas carols. Being someone who took Christmas very seriously, and being slightly tired, he was not in a particularly good mood (almost a scrooge). Going to check in his luggage, he saw hanging mistletoe. Not real mistletoe, but very cheap plastic with red paint on some of the rounder parts and green paint on some of the flatter and pointer parts, that could be taken for mistletoe only in a very Picasso sort of way. With a considerable degree of irritation and nowhere else to vent it, he said to the attendant, “Even if we were married, I would not want to kiss you under such a ghastly mockery of mistletoe. “Sir, look more closely at where the mistletoe is. “OK, I see that it’s above the luggage scale, which is the place you’d have to step forward for a kiss. “That’s not why it’s there. “OK, I give up. Why is it there? “It’s there so you can kiss your luggage goodbye. Food for Thought The best of all gifts around any Christmas tree: the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other. (Burton Hillis) Merry Christmas, everybody!

Hi, everyone! Happy week before Christmas! Merry Christmas to everyone! My Christmas wish for you is a calm, peaceful holiday that is overflowing with love and happiness! And, of course, please take time to reflect on the real reason for the season ... the best gift ever ... the Lord and Savior’s birth. God bless you all! True Meaning of Christmas Just a week before Christmas I had a visitor. This is how it happened. I just finished the household chores for the night and was preparing to go to bed, when I heard a noise in the front of the house. I opened the door to the front room and to my surprise, Santa himself stepped out from behind the Christmas tree. “What are you doing? I started to ask. The words choked up in my throat, and I saw he had tears in his eyes. His usual jolly manner was gone. Gone was the eager, boisterous soul we all know. He then answered me with a simple statement... “TEACH THE CHILDREN! I was puzzled. What did he mean? He anticipated my question and with one quick movement brought forth a miniature toy bag from behind the tree. As I stood bewildered, Santa said, “Teach the children! Teach them the old meaning of Christmas. The meaning that now-a-days Christmas has forgotten. Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a FIR TREE and placed it before the mantle. “Teach the children that the pure green color of the stately fir tree remains green all year round, depicting the everlasting hope of mankind, all the needles point heavenward, making it a symbol of man’s thoughts turning toward heaven. He again reached into his bag and pulled out a brilliant STAR. “Teach the children that the star was the heavenly sign of promises long ago. God promised a Savior for the world, and the star was the sign of fulfillment of His promise. He then reached into his bag and pulled out a CANDLE. “Teach the children that the candle symbolizes that Christ is the light of the world, and when we see this great light we are reminded of He who displaces the darkness. Once again he reached into his bag and removed a WREATH and placed it on the tree. “Teach the children that the wreath symbolizes the real nature of love. Real love never ceases. Love is one continuous round of affection. He then pulled from his bag an ORNAMENT of himself. “Teach the children that I, Santa Claus, symbolize the generosity and good will we feel during the month of December. He then brought out a HOLLY LEAF. “Teach the children that the holly plant

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has modernized its online Customer Care Center - www.cus tomercare.penndot.gov - to make it easier to report concerns on state-maintained roadways with new mapping capabilities, optional photo uploads, and a mobile-friendly interface. The purpose of the new Customer Care Center is to make it easier for members of the public to share their concerns or feedback. The modernized service sorts concerns into categories: road or bridge conditions; removing something from a roadway; traffic, signs, or signals; ongoing roadwork or projects; or general questions and concerns. Users can map their current location to document a concern or choose an address or roadway, as well as other relevant location information, and even upload photos related to the concern. These descriptions will provide better information for PennDOT staff and can reduce the amount of time needed to gather more information from customers submitting concerns. As of Sept. 30, the previous Customer Care Center had nearly 45,000 concerns submitted this year. More than 96 percent of those concerns have been resolved. Motorists are asked to be as specific as possible when providing locations of concerns. Motorists should report the county, municipality, street name, and state route number, which can be
found on small black and white signs posted along state highways. In addition, a description of any familiar landmarks would be helpful for PennDOT to locate the problem area. Maintenance concerns will be corrected as soon as possible. Emergency road repairs, such as road wash-outs, are handled on a top-priority basis. Concerns may also be reported through 800-FIX-ROAD
(800-349-7623), though the number should not be used to report traffic accidents, disabled vehicles, or other emergencies. Motorists should continue to call 911 to report these types of emergencies. Customers with questions or concerns related to driver or vehicle services should visit www.dmv.pa.gov. For concerns related to the Pennsylvania Turnpike, readers should visit www.paturnpike.com.

Innovations Challenge Set Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) are reminding high school students in grades nine to 12 to submit their entries for PennDOT’s Innovations Challenge. The deadline for submission is Monday, Dec. 31. This year’s challenge asks students to look at innovative methods, aside from laws and educational campaigns, that can be developed in the next five to 10 years to get drivers to slow down in work zones. The Innovations Challenge aims to not only help students explore real transportation challenges that PennDOT is facing, but also open their minds to the possibility of working for PennDOT after graduation. Regional winners will be selected and invited to compete in Harrisburg next year for the statewide championship. The statewide winning team will be awarded $1,500 from the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Traffic Services Association (ATSSA) to be divided among team members. For complete Innovations Challenge details, readers may visit www.penndot.gov/innovation.

Several tips can help trees last until the final present is unwrapped and the last of the egg nog has been consumed. The first tip is to buy a freshly cut tree. own tree, the National Fire Protection Association notes that fresh trees should have green needles that do not come off when touched. Trees that appear to be dried out or those that shed needles when touched should be avoided. The Tree Care Industry Association advises consumers to protect their Christmas trees as they transport them home. The tree should be wrapped in a plastic wrap so it makes it home damage-free. A damaged tree might not make it through the holiday season. Pre-cut trees should be cut again before leaving the lot. Pre-cut trees can make it through the holiday season looking their best, but buyers should request that employees cut as much as two inches off the bottom of the tree before leaving the lot. Once trees are cut, sap begins to seal their base, making it hard for them to absorb water. By requesting that between one and two inches be removed from the bottom of the tree at the time of purchase, buyers are ensuring their trees will be able to absorb the water they will need to make it through the season when they get home. To prevent the base of the tree from drying out, the tree should be placed in water the moment it gets
home. Freshly cut trees may initially need the water in their tree stands filled in the morning and then again in the evening. As the season progresses trees likely will not need their stands filled more than once per day. The tree should be placed away from heat sources. Placing trees away from heat sources, such as radiators, fireplaces, heating vents, and lights, reduces the likelihood that trees will dry out and also reduces the risk of fire.
