’Tis The Season For Artistic Inspiration MASD Students Create Ornaments For White House, Governor’s Mansion This holiday season, Middletown Area School District students created
ornaments for display at both the White House and the Pennsylvania Governor’s Mansion. Middletown Area Middle School (MAMS) students had the honor of creating ornaments for the 2018 Pennsylvania State Tree in the President’s Park
at the White House. The National Christmas Tree is surrounded by 56 smaller trees, each representing a state or territory. For the 2018 trees, one school from each state was selected to decorate their state’s tree. Stacey Miller, MAMS art teacher, was honored when
she was informed that MAMS had been selected to represent Pennsylvania. Miller’s eighth-grade students worked on the ornaments throughout the fall months. Each ornament was decorated with something that is signature to Pennsylvania, such as the See Ornaments pg 2

Elementary students create the ornaments, but when she was told she would need to supply 800 ornaments, she invited students from the district’s other schools to help with the effort. Since MAMS students were busy creating the ornaments for the Pennsylvania State Tree at the White House, Pronesti reached out to the teachers at the remaining schools in the district - Fink, Kunkel, and Middletown Area High School. Classroom teachers and art teachers from the four schools planned “ W hite Christmas” ornaments for this year’s theme. Snowflakes, snowmen, and origami trees made from sheets of music began filling up classrooms, and the 800 ornaments were boxed up in early November and sent to the Governor’s Mansion, where they were displayed for the holiday season.
In the fifth tiebreaker round, Lower Dauphin Middle School (LDMS) eighth-grader Toby Waters’ knowledge of Iceland proved to be the difference in winning the school’s annual Geography Bee. In doing so, he became the third LDMS student to win the bee in back-to-back years and the fourth two-time winner. Toby and second-place finisher Rudy Anthony, a fellow eighth-grader, were tied after the three championship questions and needed five rounds of sudden victory questions to determine a champion. Seventh-grader Annabell Riordan was third. Toby, Rudy, and Annabell were declared the top three finishers after a series of six rounds with a field of seven finalists. The bee started with 20 contestants who answered seven
rounds of questions on topics ranging from states and continents to physical and historical geography. Toby will take a written exam later in the school year for a chance to represent the school at the state geography bee on Friday, March 29. Pictured on front: Principal Jill Freedman (back, left) and assistant principal Johnathon Breininger (back, right) congratulated the top three finishers in the Lower Dauphin Middle School Geography Bee. Earning top honors were (front, from left) Rudy Anthony, who was the runner-up; Toby Waters, who was the champion for the second straight year; and Annabell Riordan, who placed third.

The tree lighting ceremony was held on Nov. 28 at the President’s Park, which is a national park and free to the public. Other MASD students were also busy creating ornaments for the Governor’s Mansion. When Gina Pronesti, Reid Elementary teacher, attended the 2017 Christmas Open House at the Governor’s Mansion with her family, she noticed that the tree ornaments were created by students from an area school. She inquired how schools were selected to participate and was told she could submit her school to be considered. As Pronesti was gearing up for the start of the new school year in August 2018, she received a call from a staff member of Gov. Tom Wolf, asking if MASD would create ornaments. Fireworks from pg 1 By Chelsea Peifer
For the fifth consecutive year, volunteers from Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Winters Heritage House Museum have put together a fun-filled, family-oriented New Year’s Eve celebration for the community. The event, Welcome 2019, is set to take place from 3 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31. Several new elements have been added for this year’s celebration, but the one that organizers are perhaps the most thrilled about is a professional fireworks display. The fireworks will begin immediately after the raising of a lighted star at 7 p.m. outside of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 125 E. High St., Elizabethtown. By raising the star at 7 p.m., the church is continuing a tradition that Elizabethtown Borough held for many years in conjunction with its sister town of Letterkenny, Ireland. Organizer Phil Clark explained that at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time in Elizabethtown, the clock strikes midnight for residents welcoming the new year in Letterkenny. Plus, hosting a celebration well before midnight gives local families and anyone who would rather not stay up late an alternative option for ringing in the new year. From 3 to 6 p.m., chicken barbecue dinners will be available to purchase at the church. Meals will include a half-chicken, a baked potato, fruit, and a bottle of water. Advance tickets for the chicken dinners may be purchased at the church or by calling 717-3672786. Homemade soup will also be for sale at the church that evening. Aside from the chicken barbecue and soup, the entire event is free. Children’s activities will be offered at the Winters Heritage House Museum, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Museum director Nancy Landis said that hearth cooking demonstrations and samples of roast beef, chicken, gingerbread, and whipped cream will be part of the fun, along with handspinning demonstrations and a variety of children’s crafts. Free activities at the church will
Diana J. Riordan, DDS include bingo, balloon twisting, face painting, music provided by a disc jockey, and games led by a local Scout troop. Bingo prizes have been donated by parishioners and local businesses. Free hot dogs, popcorn, and hot cocoa will be available. Emergency vehicles including a fire truck, a police car, and an ambulance will also be on-site for folks to tour. Organizer Vicki Yaider noted that the youth group made luminarias that will be lined up outside to provide extra lighting and ambiance. Weather permitting, a fire pit will be blazing and supplies for s’mores will be on hand. Also new for this year will be commemorative bottles of root beer available for purchase. The 22-ounce bottles will be brewed and bottled by an Elizabethtownbased brewery and will feature a commemorative “Welcome 2019” label. According to Clark, Christ Lutheran members have sold root beer floats at a stand at the Elizabethtown Fair as a fundraiser for more than a dozen years, and in recent years proceeds from that effort have helped to fund the New Year’s Eve event. Proceeds from the bottled root beer sales will help to keep future celebrations free for attendees. Clark also hopes to have additional commemorative bottles made to sell at the next Elizabethtown Fair. With four years of successful events in the books and details all lined up for this year, now organizers are simply hoping and praying for good weather. “It was bitter cold last year, but we didn’t cancel,” recalled Clark, estimating that approximately 300 people showed up. “It was surprisingly wellattended for how cold it was.” For more information, readers may call 717-367-2786 or visit www.christlutheran-etown.com. (Ecclesiastes 10:4) 7. Close out emotional and impulsive decision-making. 8. Close out poor use of your mouth. (James 3:2) 9. Close out the good of the past that hinders you. (Philippians 3:13-14) 10. Finally, close the year out with God’s help. Life Candles The four candles burned slowly. Their ambiance was so soft you could hear them speak. The first candle said, “I am Peace, but these days, nobody wants to keep me.” Then Peace’s flame slowly diminished and went out completely. The second candle said, “I am Faith, but these days, I am no longer indispensable.” Then Faith’s flame slowly diminished and went out completely. Sadly, the third candle said, “I am Love, and I haven’t the strength to stay lit any longer. People put me aside and do not understand my importance. They even forget to love those who are nearest to them.” And waiting no longer, Love went out completely. Suddenly, a child entered the room and saw the three candles no longer burning. The child cried, “Why are you not burning? You are supposed to stay lit until the end.” Then the fourth candle said gently to the little boy, “Don’t be afraid, for I am Hope, and while I still burn, we can re-light the

other candles.” With shining eyes, the child took the Candle of Hope and lit the other three candles. Never let the flame of hope go out of your life. With hope, no matter how bad things seem, peace, faith and love can shine brightly in our lives. Don’t let these candles go out in your life! Random Thought Here’s to eggnog, mistletoe smooches, tacky sweaters, and gaining five pounds. Recipe of the Week New Year’s Cookies Ingredients: 6 ounces semisweet chocolate chips 6 ounces butterscotch chips 7 ounces unsalted peanuts 3 1/2 ounces crunchy Chinese noodles Directions: 1. Melt chips slowly in microwave, stirring frequently. 2. Add peanuts and noodles. 3. Drop bite-size pieces onto waxed paper and refrigerate. 4. Serve when firm. Thank You Thanks to Frances Wolfgang of Middletown for the piece about the candles! Such a nice story! Food for Thought Faith makes all things possible, Hope makes all things work, Love makes all things beautiful. May you have all three with the start of the New Year! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, everybody!

Book Drive Held
Public libraries in Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties benefited from the annual Bouquets for Books children’s book drive held by Royer’s Flowers and Gifts from Oct. 28 to Nov. 10. Nolt Receives Recognition At the International Association of Fairs and Expositions (IAFE) 128th annual convention, Dr. Sally Nolt of the Elizabethtown Fair in Elizabethtown was one of five volunteers presented with the Heritage Award. Recipients were nominated by their fairs’ staff members and/or board members. The awards recognize the achievements of outstanding fair volunteers. Each winner received a plaque and $1,000, and each fair that had nominated one of the winners received $500. The nominees were required to have at least 10 years of fair management experience, could receive no more than $2,500 remuneration annually for serving in the position, and were required to be current members of the IAFE. When the Elizabethtown Jaycees held the first Elizabethtown Fair in 1973, Nolt was a Jayceette and co-chaired the only food stand at the fair for several years. As the fair grew, she began helping with competitive exhibits in the areas of setup, tear-down, exhibitor registration, and judging. She formally became a member of the fair
committee in 1983 when she was elected director and secretary, where she still serves. During the fair, Nolt is on the grounds each day from start to finish. She can be found in the office guiding volunteers, counting ribbons, dealing with daily issues, recording for an auction or contest, or meeting with radio and television personnel. Nolt, who was a teacher for 37 years, can also be seen encouraging exhibitors. In 1990, the Elizabethtown Fair nominated Nolt to serve as director on the board of the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs (PSACF). She was elected to be one of six directors representing Zone 4 in Pennsylvania and remains in service of that board today. During her time on the board, she served as Zone 4 secretary for four years and then became the chairperson. In 2017, she was elected to serve as vice president of PSACF for a two-year term. She will serve as PSACF president from 2019 to 2020. To learn more about IAFE, readers may visit www.fairsandexpos.com or call 800-516-0313.

For a donation, the Save the Manatee Club will send a personalized adoption packet, which includes an adoption certificate, a photo and the life history of a real Florida manatee, and a membership handbook. Manatees like Rocket, Howie, Ariel, and Gator are all popular adoptees, and a new female

Winter Driving Safety Tips Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has shared the agency’s plans for winter services and highlighted tools members of the public can use through the winter and how they can prepare for the coming season. PennDOT’s top priority is safety, and that guides winter preparations and operations. To help the public prepare for the season and share information about winter services, resources are available at www.penndot.gov/winter. The site also has a complete winter guide with detailed information about winter services in each of PennDOT’s 11 engineering districts. The public can also access travel information on nearly 40,000 roadway miles yearround at www.511PA.com, and during the winter, they can find plow truck locations and details of when statemaintained roadways were last plowed. The information is made possible by PennDOT’s Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) technology, which uses units in each of the more than 2,200 departmentowned and rented plow trucks to send a cellular signal showing where a truck is located. The 40,000 miles for which PennDOT is responsible translates into 96,000 snow-lane miles - enough miles to circle the globe nearly four times. A snow lane is calculated as the miles of road multiplied by the number of lanes, which means a 1-mile section of four-lane roadway would equal 4 snowlane miles. The department maintains roughly the same number of miles maintained by the state in New York, New Jersey, and all the New England states combined. With $228 million budgeted for this winter’s statewide operations, PennDOT deploys about 4,500 on-the-road workers, has more than 620,000 tons of salt on hand across the state, and will take salt deliveries throughout the winter. Winter maintenance is a critical and difficult task, and drivers should always think safety first and be sure that they are giving plenty of room to PennDOT operators and other motorists. When winter weather hits, PennDOT’s primary focus is on interstates and expressways, and equipment may be redirected to those routes during significant winter events. The more traffic a roadway has, the more attention it will receive from plows, so motorists may find deeper accumulations on less-traveled routes and should adjust their driving for those conditions.
If motorists encounter snow or ice-covered roads, they should slow down, increase their following distance and avoid distractions. Last winter in Pennsylvania, preliminary data shows that there were 440 crashes resulting in one fatality and 221 injuries on snowy, slushy, or ice-covered roadways where aggressive-driving behaviors such as speeding or making careless lane changes were factors. In addition to planning for winter travel conditions, motorists should prepare their vehicles for the season. Tires should be checked often for the correct level of air pressure and adequate tire tread depth to perform on ice and snow. A quick way to check tread depth is to insert a penny in the tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down. If the entire head can be seen, the tires are worn and traction will suffer. If the driver lives in an area prone to heavy snow, he or she may want to consider using dedicated snow tires or carrying a set of tire chains. At a minimum, all-season tires should be rated for use in mud and snow. Once vehicles are tra vel-ready, drivers should be prepared for winter or vehicle emergencies, especially if long-distance travel is planned. PennDOT urges motorists to carry an emergency kit. An emergency kit should include items such as nonperishable food, water, first aid supplies, warm clothes, a blanket, a cellphone charger and a small snow shovel. However, motorists should tailor their kits to any specific needs that they or their families may have. Drivers should consider adding such items as baby supplies, extra medication, pet supplies, or even children’s games. Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 860 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts accessible on the 511PA website. For more information on PennDOT, winter preparations, and additional winterdriving resources for motorists, readers may visit www.penndot.gov.
