Donation Drive Benefits Food Pantry The Susquehanna Lions Club held its ninth “Fill the Truck” food drive for the Northeastern Food Pantry on June 22 to 24. This year, shoppers at the Giant Food Store in Manchester donated 5,160 items for the food pantry. Lions Nevin Weirich and Art Kasper
helped to pack 209 boxes of nonperishable items for the food panty this year. On behalf of the Northeastern Food Pantry, the Susquehanna Lions Club recognizes those who donated to the successful fundraiser. The club’s motto is “We Serve.”

The York County Astronomical Society (YCAS) will offer a free public Starwatch at its observatory at John C. Rudy County Park, 400 Mundis Race Road, York, on Saturday, July 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. The observatory is located inside the park, not at the administrative headquarters. Visitors will be shown an astronomical presentation on the current night sky and other topics and then will view the skies through telescopes. Experienced members will lead a tour of celestial wonders, including stars, planets, nebulae, and the moon. Visitors are invited to bring their own telescope. Star charts will be available to help with exploration of the nighttime sky. Red Land Baptist Church, 661 Big Spring Road, New Cumberland, has announced its fourth annual Summer Outdoor Concert Series. The series of free concerts will feature a wide variety of music on the outdoor stage on select Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. All concerts will be open to the public. The series will begin on July 21, when RK Praise will return. Russell and Kristi Johnson will share their contemporary praise style of music. On Aug. 4, Ransomed Soulz Band from the Freedom Biker Church in York will perform high-energy translations of popular music with a twist. A cookout will be held prior to the concert. The church will supply hamburgers and hot dogs, and attendees are asked to bring a side dish. The Weaver Believer Band will return to the outdoor stage on Aug. 18 to conclude the series. The York Symphony Orchestra (YSO) has announced that its 2018-19 season is themed “HEROES!� It will feature performances - including six Classical Series concerts, four Pops Series concerts, and the annual Young Person’s Concert inspired by musical heroes, national heroes, heroes from olden times, sports heroes, and superheroes. Concerts will take place at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. Pops Series concerts will include “Heroes and Superheroes� on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 2 p.m., which will share the music of America’s TV and film caped crusaders. Annual Slavic Festival Slated The annual Slavic American festival will take place on Sunday, July 15, on the parish grounds of St. Ann Byzantine Catholic Church, 5408 Locust Lane, Harrisburg, from noon to 9 p.m. People can start the day at 10 a.m. with Divine Liturgy (Mass) that will be held in the church. The day will feature homemade food such as perohi, halushki (noodles and sweet cabbge), holupki (stuffed cabbage rolls), kielbasa, snichley (Eastern European hamburgers), soups, and homemade pastries, as well as nut, poppy seed, and apricot rolls and more. Families may enjoy children’s activities like games, face painting, and a moon bounce from 1 to 7 p.m. The church will be open for tours. Two live polka bands will entertain. York County Libraries Posts Quest Fest
“Leap Into Science” from pg 1
York County Libraries has announced plans for Quest Fest, its annual mid-summer festival. The family-friendly event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, at the band shell at Codorus State Park, located on Route 216 in Hanover. The festival is free and open to the public. State Rep. Carol Hill-Evans will take the stage at 11 a.m. as guest storyteller. She will be joined by a Pete the Cat costume character, who will be available for photographs. Steven Courtney, a singersongwriter and harmonica player, will present original songs, humor, physical comedy and stories at noon. Courtney has performed numerous times at York County Libraries’ special events, and has performed more than 6,100 concerts, and recorded 30 full-length albums. He has received numerous Parents

Elementary-age children and their families can “Leap Into Science” and conduct their own experiments featuring sound and music with educator Tara Tolton at York County libraries throughout the month of July as part of the 2018 SummerQuest: “Libraries Rock!” program. In this program, children will use fiction and nonfiction books to learn information about a scientific topic, make observations and predictions, and then use scientific exploration to investigate the answers. The program is free to attend, but residents are encouraged to check with their local library to find out if registration is required. Leap Into Science is modeled after the successful museum/library partnership between by The Franklin Institute and the Free Library of Philadelphia. York County Libraries’ program aims to engage parents and children in a quality learning experience that pairs hands-on science activities and relevant books for children. Lisa Schmittle, reading specialist and youth services manager for York County Libraries (YCL), will present Jazz Story Times in July at YCL locations. 2 to 3 p.m. at Dover Area Community Library, 3700-3 Davidsburg Road, Dover, 717-292-6814. Pete the Cat will also be present with guest reader state Rep. Carol Hill-Evans at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 14, during YCL’s Quest Fest at Codorus State Park on Route 216. The story time will take place at the band shell. Admission is free and registration is not required at local libraries or the festival. “Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons” won the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award for distinguished books for beginning readers. The Pete the Cat books by children’s author and illustrator James Dean are available to borrow from York County Libraries locations. A Jazz Story Time will be presented at libraries by reading specialist Lisa Schmittle. The story times will feature the picture book “Acoustic Rooster and His Barnyard Band” by Kwame Alexander. Schmittle will combine the story with foundational art and math concepts related to the Libraries Rock! theme. She will model teaching techniques adults may use at home with their children. Schmittle is a graduate of Shippensburg University with a Master of Education as a reading specialist and spent 12 years

Concert, Worship Service Slated The Mount Gretna Bible Festival has scheduled a concert and announced the leaders of an upcoming worship service. The events will take place in the Mount Gretna Tabernacle, located at Third Street and Glossbrenner Avenue on the Campmeeting grounds, just south of Route 117. Irish Blessing, the York-based Srour family band, will perform a concert of traditional Irish music and dance on Sunday, July 15, at 7 p.m. Beginning in the basement of their family home in York, members of the Srour family have played and danced in venues around the world, competed in world-wide championships, and won international acclaim.
The Rev. Myrtle McCall, associate pastor of the Camp Hill Presbyterian Church, and the church’s music director, Daniel Dorty, will lead a worship service on Sunday, July 22, at 7 p.m. Following her studies at Yale Divinity School, McCall served the Mechanicsburg Presbyterian Church before being called to Camp Hill. In addition to his responsibilities as music director, Dorty serves as pianist and organist for the Susquehanna Chorale. There is no admission cost for either event, but a freewill offering will be received. Parking will be available on the lot adjacent to the Mount Gretna Fire Company on Boulevard Avenue.

Starview UMC Sets Ice Cream Social Starview United Methodist Church (UMC), 85 Codorus Furnace Road, Mount Wolf, will host an ice cream social on Saturday, July 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. Ice cream with various sundae toppings will be available for free. Starview United Methodist Church began in 1851 as Jerusalem Church of the United Brethren near 650 Codorus Furnace Road, Mount Wolf. After a fire destroyed the structure early in 1856, it was rebuilt and rededicated in June 1856. In 1914, the church was dismantled and the foundation field stone and timbers were transported to the new location at 85 Codorus Furnace Road. By 1950, the church was called Starview Evangelical United Brethren Church. It became Starview United Methodist in 1968 when the United Brethren and Methodist churches merged.
