Literacy Council Will Offer Tutor Training The York County Literacy Council (YCLC) is seeking volunteers to tutor English as a Second Language (ESL) and native-born adult students who are seeking to improve their literacy skills. YCLC provides free and confidential literacy services to adults in York County. Tutors may help students to study for their GED or to reach a literacy goal such as being able to read to their children, securing or improving employment, and working toward entry into an institution for higher learning. Volunteer tutors do not need a background in education to help students to accomplish their literacy goals. The next training session will be held at York County Literacy Council, located in the United Way Building at 800 E. King St., York, from 1 to 4 p.m. on Mondays, Aug. 13, 20, and 27, and Wednesdays, Aug. 15 and 22.
Participants must attend all sessions. The parking lot may be entered from Sherman Street. After completing the training, the tutors will meet with their students once per week for one and a half to two hours in a public location arranged by YCLC. YCLC coordinators will help tutors with the selection of materials and lesson planning throughout the tutoring experience. Requirements to be a tutor include a high school diploma or equivalent, sensitivity, patience, reliability, and attendance at training, pending a preliminary interview. To register for the training, readers may contact 717-845-8719 or volunteers@ yorkliteracy.org. The Arc of York County recently recognized a new class of donors who have contributed significantly to its efforts of bringing respect and independence to individuals with intellectual disabilities. The donors were invited to a reception on June 21 at The Arc of York County’s Camp Pennwood, where each selected a leaf on the PhilanthroTree mural. The name of each donor was permanently placed on the selected leaf to commemorate contributions made during the 2017-18 program year. This year’s leaves were claimed by various businesses and groups, including Members 1st Federal Credit Union, South End Democratic Club, and the Walmart Foundation. One leaf was claimed in memory of Dudley and Sylvia Kramer. Present for the reception were representatives from Members 1st Federal Credit Union and PCBH, along with members of the staff and board for The Arc of York County, including executive director Josh Leik and board president Ray Kraft. In order to receive a leaf on the mural, businesses, organizations or individuals must contribute $1,000 or more in a program year. The Arc of York County is dedicated to improving the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and their families by promoting and providing supports and services. The organization also fosters research and education regarding the prevention of intellectual disabilities in infants and young children. For more information on The Arc of York County, readers may call 717-846-6589 or visit www.thearcofyorkcounty.org.

Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries and Diakon Child, Family and Community Ministries had a more than $20 million community benefit last year. The nonprofit organization, which locally operates Diakon Youth Services and Diakon Adoption and Foster Care, with an office in York, recently released its 2017 community benefit report detailing an overall impact of $20.071 million. The figure represents charitable care provided within Diakon’s senior living communities and its range of child and family services, as well as free public educational sessions, the provision of free meeting space for community groups, service as a clinical training site, and veterans’ assistance-related education. Regional community benefit amounted to nearly $500,000. Community benefit refers to the way Diakon makes a difference beyond direct service and speaks to Diakon’s particular concern for those with lower incomes or other limited resources. Quantification of community benefit was done in accordance with national guidelines developed by the Catholic Health Association of the United States, particularly in terms of social accountability for Continuing Care Retirement Communities. During the festivities, the association will install new officers for the 2018-19 term and present the Senior and Junior Firefighter of the Year awards. The Old Fire Farts of York County will award three scholarships to current first responders who are going to school to enhance their skills. The Alert Fire Company will host the 106th Firefighters Association of York County Parade on Aug. 18 at 1 p.m. The prejudging of equipment will be held from 8 a.m. to noon at Hayshire Elementary School, 2801 Hayshire Drive, York. The parade will form on Masonic Drive and proceed north on North George Street for 1.6 miles to the other end of town. North George Street through the village of Emigsville will be shut down for the parade. The parade will have seven divisions and approximately 200 units. It will feature more than 10 bands, including the United States Army Old Guard Fife and Drum from Fort Myer, Va. The nationally recognized group will lead the second division, which will honor York County military veterans and fire, emergency medical, and law enforcement personnel. The division will include vintage military
vehicles, antique and new fire trucks, ambulances, police cars, and motorcycles. The parade will also include patriotic and fire prevention floats, antique and classic cars, and antique fire apparatus. It will be led by the Pennsylvania State Police mounted patrol, and a flyover will start the parade. The event will last approximately two hours, according to parade chairman Robert Straw. After the parade, a community celebration will take place behind the Alert Fire Company station. Young children may participate in firefighter skills games. The event will feature bounce houses, carnival games, and food trucks. Three bands from the parade will provide entertainment, and Tanner Mountain Band will perform on stage. Attendees will have opportunities to win fire extinguishers, gift cards, food baskets and more. Music legends David Bromberg and Rory Block will return to central Pennsylvania with a host of other acoustic music performers as part of the Susquehanna Folk Festival. The event will take place on Saturday, July 28, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, July 29, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Roundtop Mountain Resort, 925 Roundtop Road, Lewisberry. Bromberg plays a mixture of bluegrass, blues, folk, jazz and other styles. He is known for his ability to play rhythm and lead guitar at the same time, a technique he learned from blues icon the Rev. Gary Davis. Bromberg has collaborated with wellknown musicians, including Willie Nelson, Jerry Garcia, and Bob Dylan. He co-wrote the song “The Holdup with Beatles member George Harrison, who played on Bromberg’s selftitled 1972 album. Block, a noted blueswoman, released her latest album, “A Woman’s Soul, on July 6. The album delivers a deep blues tribute to Bessie Smith. Block is known as one of the most powerful acoustic blues performers alive today. Additional performers will include bluegrass great Claire Lynch Band; David Holt, a traditional American musician and host of PBS’ “State of Music; Trian, a Celtic group; Texas swing group The Quebe Sisters; and Liz Carroll. Many local acts will be featured, as well, as part of the Emerging Artist Showcase. In total, the festival will feature more than 70 musicians and workshop presenters. Attendees are encouraged to bring acoustic guitars, banjos and other instruments to join in the many jam sessions planned. All stages for the Susquehanna Folk Festival are indoor or under tents. The festival grounds are handicapped-accessible. Tickets also include access to dance, music and art workshops, along with children’s activities. Attendees may learn to play slide guitar from Block or take part in a swing dance class while dancing to the music of The Quebe Sisters. Children’s activities will include juggling taught by the Give and Take Jugglers and a jug band instrument activity led by Slim Harrison. To purchase tickets, readers may visit www.JulyFolkFest.org or call 800838-3006. Admission is free to children age 12 and under. More information and the full schedule are available at the aforementioned website.
David Bromberg will be among the performers at the Susquehanna Folk Festival, slated to take place on Saturday and Sunday, July 28 and 29.
Rory Block will perform and lead slide guitar workshops during the Susquehanna Folk Festival.
Claire Lynch and her band will perform bluegrass music at the festival.
