to curbside recycling programs. The YCSWA’s Recycling Drop-off Facility is a requirement of Act 101, Pennsylvania’s Municipal Waste Planning, Recycling and Waste Reduction Act and serves as a supplement to municipal residential curbside recycling programs. Under Act 101, 18 York County municipalities are mandated to offer curbside recycling to residents. A total of 63 York County municipalities currently offer curbside recycling either because they are a mandated municipality or because they passed a municipal ordinance establishing curbside recycling for their residents. In addition, multiple municipalities

offer drop-off recycling for residents either as stand-alone programs or in conjunction with curbside recycling. Municipal solid waste that is not recyclable is managed at the York County Resource Recovery Center, an advanced waste-toenergy process that converts these materials into renewable energy (enough to power 20,000 homes) and recovers ferrous and non-ferrous metals and aggregates from the remaining combustion ash and reduces reliance on non-renewable sources of energy. ovarian cancer and its symptoms. According to Lewandowski, who leads educational presentations on the topic with other Teal Sisters, ovarian cancer is usually not detected until it has progressed to stage three or four, but early detection can mean the difference between life and death. Lewandowski references the BEAT acronym provided by the NormaLeah Ovarian Cancer Initiative when teaching others about the symptoms, which include: Bloating that is persistent; Eating less, feeling fuller; Abdominal and/or back pain; and Trouble with bladder and bowels. “The big thing is if the symptom lasts for more than two weeks,” emphasized Lewandowski. Many women are unaware that a Pap test does not test for ovarian cancer; therefore, Lewandowski urges women to be their own advocate and request an ovarian cancer screening if they are experiencing any symptoms. “All of our stories are different, but every single one of us at one point said something like, ‘Well, I thought it was just fill-in-the-blank, but then it wouldn’t go away,’” said Lewandowski. “You don’t want to think you have cancer.” “Most of the people in the group have ovarian cancer, but we’d like to increase awareness for all types of gynecological cancers,” Lewandowski continued. “The important thing for people to know is that there’s treatment. The doctors are very conscious of the quality of your time.” Green added, “Your life does not stop. I went to the China in the middle of my chemotherapy. There are options out there, and if one doesn’t work, you try something else.” The Teal Sisters make

it a point to say they are “living with cancer” rather than the commonly heard alternative of “dying with cancer.” “We’re not gloom and doom,” said Radziewicz. In September, which is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, the Teal Sisters will take part in Turn the Towns Teal, a national campaign to promote awareness of the symptoms and risk factors associated with ovarian cancer. The ladies encourage individuals, businesses, and communities throughout Lancaster and York to get involved by displaying biodegradable teal ribbons on their property. Some towns participate by turning fountains teal or lighting up buildings at night with teal spotlights. Lewandowski recalled that the Pennsylvania State Capitol was aglow in teal for the month of September last year. The Teal Sisters will be tying teal ribbons along Hellam Street in Wrightsville and, they hope, in as many other locations as possible. To order teal ribbons and learn more about Turn the Towns Teal, readers may visit www.turnthetownsteal.org. On Friday, Sept. 7, the Teal Sisters will have an ovarian cancer awareness table at the Lancaster Barnstormers game at the team’s home stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, and one of the members will have the chance to throw the first pitch. Individuals and organizations that would like to inquire about having the Teal Sisters give an educational presentation on the risk factors and subtle symptoms of ovarian cancer may contact Radziewicz at conniesratt @comcast.net.

cer, so the ladies also sport the shade for Teal Tuesdays. “We met informally at each other’s houses but decided in addition to talking about where we were and laughing, we’d (raise) some awareness, because ovarian cancer is silent,” explained Green. “But we’re not silent about it.” To jumpstart those efforts, the Teal Sisters marched in the Millersville Parade in 2017, flanked by a teal pickup truck as they handed out teal mints and lollipops and information about

NATIONAL SEWING MONTH

York College’s Marketview Arts, 37 W. Philadelphia St., York, will open the fall semester with exhibitions by York College and York Community Art Scholars Exhibition (YCASE) faculty through Wednesday, Sept. 26. Both exhibitions began on Aug. 24 and will have a reception at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7. All events are free and open to the public. The Faculty Biennial, located on Marketview Arts’ third floor, offers an opportunity to view recent work by full- and part-time faculty from York College’s fine art and graphic design faculty. The exhibition reflects the faculty’s dedication to creative research and an active studio practice. The works in the exhibition represent a wide range of disciplines and media, including photography, painting, printmaking, drawing, illustration, jewelry, sculpture, and installation. Among the exhibiting faculty members are professional

artists who have active exhibition records and have won many awards, including the Janet and Walter Sondheim Prize, the Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Award, and several Best in Show awards from national juried exhibitions. The YCASE Faculty Exhibition, on the first floor of Marketview Arts, celebrates the personal creative output of York-area high school art teachers whose students will participate in the third annual YCASE at Marketview Arts in November. The exhibition offers an opportunity not only for the YCASE participants and their friends and peers to view the teachers as professional exhibiting artists, it also gives the community a chance to identify relationships between the works of the teachers and their students. YCASE also includes the YCASE Art Walk in October and the YCASE Finalist Exhibition in November. The galleries at Marketview Arts are open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesdays from 1 to 8 p.m., Fridays from 5 to 9 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The galleries are closed on Sundays, Mondays, and holidays.
