SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

Veterans Visit Washington, D.C. More than 70 veterans of the World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War eras and other eras gathered at Northeastern High School for the 13th Honor Bus trip in April. The trip was sponsored by the Northeastern High School Honor Bus Project, a group of students that escorts local veterans on allexpenses-paid trips to Washington, D.C., to visit the various memorials dedicated to their service. During the recent trip, veterans also visited Arlington National Cemetery to witness the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns. All participants were treated to breakfast, a bag lunch, and a banquet upon return to Northeastern High School. The 14th Honor Bus trip is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Nov. 17, and is open to all veterans of the following time periods: World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Cold War, Gulf Wars, and War on Terror. Anyone who has ever served in the military is welcome to take part. For information and an application, readers may contact Duane Swartz at Northeastern High School at 717-266-3644, ext. 81307, or visit http://1221950.wixsite.com/nhshonorbus. Donations to help offset the cost of the trip are appreciated and may be given to Northeastern High School.

reimbursement, free supplemental liability insurance, recognition and appreciation events, paid assistance with clearances, volunteer of the month recognition, and more. Planning Commission Posts Meeting The York County planning commission has scheduled the second of three public information sessions to discuss creating a county stormwater authority to combat flooding and water pollution in York County. The meeting will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the York Learning Center, 300 E. Seventh Ave., York, from 6 to 8 p.m. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to further educate the public on the possibility of creating a countywide stormwater authority and, if created, how the authority would operate, what services it would provide, and what fees would be assessed. Planners will present an update on the exploration process and answer questions from the public. Breakout groups will form for property-specific items. If approved by the York County commissioners, a stormwater authority would address flooding and pollution problems by investing in stream restoration, erosion

control and reforestation projects along waterways throughout the county. Approximately 1,100 miles of streams that do not meet mandated environmental standards have been identified in York County, and many miles of streams have not yet been tested. The planning commission has identified 215 locations on roads in the county that experience frequent flooding problems. The county is considering the stormwater authority option while Pennsylvania and neighboring states work together to clean the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay. The stormwater authority would work to help York County meet its responsibilities to reduce the amount of nitrogen, phosphorus and sediment that flows into the Susquehanna River from local waterways. The final public information session will take place on Thursday, Nov. 8. Residents may obtain updates and submit comments at www.yorkstormwater.com.

Parade Scheduled Registration is now open for the 69th edition of the York Halloween Parade, which will take place on Sunday, Oct. 28. Commercial and nonprofit organizations, baton groups or dance studios, and individuals and small groups may enter the parade. The parade will again step off at the York Fairgrounds, 334 Carlisle Ave., at 2 p.m. and travel east on Market Street from Richland Avenue to Broad Street in downtown York. The route will feature a number of vendors as well as a Family Fun Zone on the corner of Market and George Streets from 1 to 3 p.m. The Family Fun Zone will include games and inflatables for children, music, and more. Businesses along the parade route will participate in the revived October tradition of inviting art students from local school districts to paint their windows with original doughnut monster and doughnut-scape Halloween-themed art. For more information, readers may visit www.yorkhalloweenparade.com. Registration fee waivers are available for 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations by visiting York Traditions Bank branches. For the fifth year, a special reward will be available to the first 10 high school and junior high music programs to register for the York Halloween Parade.
