September House Senior Center, 1251 W. King St., York, has announced its upcoming activities. On Friday, Oct. 12, the senior center will host its ’50s party. Attendees will dress in 1950sstyle attire and enjoy special food. Local performer Kerry White will sing music from that era starting at 12:45 p.m. Continuing the “Remembering the ’50s” theme on Monday, Oct. 15, attendees of the senior center will play games from childhood. From 9 to 11 a.m., participants may play pickup sticks, hopscotch, jacks, and more. exchange game. Everyone who brings a gift will take one home. From 12:45 to 1:45 p.m., a game of charades will be played. The center is also starting a group of players who want to learn or play 500 bid from 1 to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays. On Thursday, Oct. 18, Sue will demonstrate how to make potpourri sachets out of crocheted squares (the crocheting is already done). Participants will work on the craft from 9 to 11 a.m., and all supplies will be provided. Also on Oct. 18, at 10:45 a.m., Senate candidate Judith Higgins will visit the senior center. On Friday, Oct. 19, center attendees will watch the original movie “Grease.” Susan will serve a free sweet treat for the audience. September House delivers

meals to homebound seniors on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and the senior center is in need of volunteers to help with these deliveries. Routes are within a mile of the center and require between one and two hours to do. Deliveries can be made by one person or by teams of two. A study group has formed for those interested in obtaining their ham (amateur) radio operator’s license. This group meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1 p.m., and anyone is welcome to join. The group will be setting up a station in the near future and will be trying to contact radio operators from other states, countries, and the Space Station. The center offers a Tang Soo Do (Korean martial arts) program

every Monday and Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. This instruction, taught by a certified teacher, is available at varying levels. New students are welcome. A more relaxed daily workout is offered from 10 to 10:30 a.m. The center also offers cards and games throughout the week. Pinochle is played every Monday afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m., chess is played on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Bridge Club meets from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays. A group will play shuffleboard on Tuesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. and is looking for new players. The center also has a variety of board games, cards, and jigsaw puzzles. Wood burning classes/workshops are offered on the first and third Fridays of the month.

The York County Area Agency on Aging’s APPRISE Program will offer free personalized counseling during Medicare’s annual enrollment period, which will run from Monday, Oct. 15, to Friday, Dec. 7. The annual enrollment period is when Medicare beneficiaries can review their coverage and determine if health and prescription plans continue to meet their needs. Annual Heritage Festival Slated The 22nd annual Delta and Cardiff Heritage Festival will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Peach Bottom Township Recreation Center, 5 Pendyrus St., Delta. This year’s theme is “The Welsh Came for the Gold!” The festival is held to raise awareness of unique and rich local history. It is also provided as a venue where churches, civic and youth groups can talk to members of the community, share mutual interests and do fundraising. It is the biggest fundraising day for the Welsh Cottages at Coulsontown and the Old Line Museum. Trinity African Methodist Episcopal Church will hold a breakfast at the Delta Area Senior Center starting at 7:30 a.m. The senior center is located in the Peach Bottom Township Recreation Center. The museum will offer items for sale along with a silent auction, a giveaway drawing and basket items. The silent auction will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with features including themed baskets and groupings consisting of antiques and collectibles. Slate splitting demonstrations

will take place at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and a Critter Connections program has been scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Disc jockey Lisa will provide entertainment from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Kennard-Dale FFA will offer apple sundaes starting at 11 a.m. A 5K History Run/Walk will start at 1 p.m. at Delta-Peach Bottom Elementary School, 1081 Atom Road, Delta. Khan is a 2010 graduate of the Leadership Training Program and has been a regular speaker at Leadership York’s diversity sessions since 2009. She has a Bachelor of Science in communications. Before joining Leadership York, she was the marketing and communications manager for York Academy Regional Charter School. Khan is the founder of the Solidarity Society of South Central Pennsylvania, a social justice group dedicated to promoting peaceful dialogue and eliminating prejudice and fear of Islam and immigrants. She also founded Meet A Muslim American (MAMA), an educational tabling event held annually at the YWCA’s Race Against Racism to offer attendees the opportunity to meet and speak with local Muslims. Khan serves on the advisory board of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), an Islamic civil liberties and civil advocacy group whose mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam and empower

American Muslims with their constitutional rights. She has also served on the board of directors for Creative York, a local nonprofit providing free art exhibits and arts programs to inner-city and at-risk youths. Khan was a recipient of the Women in Style Award in 2017 for her social justice advocacy work. Leadership York’s mission is to train, connect, and inspire individuals to serve the York community in leadership positions. The organization was founded in 1978 and boasts just under 3,700 graduates from its six programs. The graduates provide leadership to more than 250 nonprofit organizations and serve thousands of constituents in state and local government.
