YRRC Plans Winter Series By Chelsea Peifer
Running with a chill in the air or snow underfoot is all par for the course when it comes to the York Road Runners Club (YRRC) Winter Series. The 2018-19 series is sanctioned by USA Track & Field and features eight races on various weekends in November to March, with one registration fee covering the cost to participate in all eight of the events. Professional chip timing will be included. Coordinator Heather Roe said that organizers aim to get everybody involved, whether they show up for fun or competition, are young or old, front of the pack or back of the pack, new runners or people with years of experience, or take part as individuals or families. “We want everybody to feel welcome, Roe emphasized.
Each of the races in the series will also include the option of a 1-mile race, set to begin 25 minutes prior to the main event. Roe said that this option is great for children and beginner runners, as well as for participants who would like to use it as a warmup before running the longer distances. The series will kick off with the Dover 10 Miler at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, at North Salem Elementary School, 5161 N. Salem Church Road, Dover. Other races are scheduled as follows: Spring Valley 4-Miler at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 25; Dallastown 10K at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15; John Rudy 5-Miler at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 29; Indian Rock 10K at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019; Jacobus 5-Miler at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019; Springettsbury 10K at 9 a.m. on Sat-

York Habitat for Humanity will dedicate its 132nd home to first-time homeowner Kelley Page and her son on Saturday, Nov. 3. This property, a three-bedroom, two-story unit, is located at 109 N. Main St., Dover. The public is invited to attend the dedication ceremony, which will begin at 10 a.m. An open house will take place immediately after the ceremony, and attendees will be able to tour the home and meet Page and her son. As with all of York Habitat’s homes, this Habitat for Humanity house was built
primarily by volunteers, including staff from several local businesses. Many local organizations and churches also contributed countless hours completing the project. Close to 4,000 volunteer hours were completed in building this home, including several shifts of just female workers during York Habitat’s Women Build Week. The Page family has been working with York Habitat for Humanity for more than a year, with the actual construction taking just six months. During that time, Page
prepared for becoming a homeowner by attending Habitat classes and keeping a strict monthly budget. Kelley was also required to give at least 225 hours of “sweat equity to the project. Friends, family, and co-workers of the Pages also put in hours working on the new home. Parking for those attending the dedication is available on the grassy area behind the home. Guests are asked to turn on Butter Road off of Main Street (Route 74) and then take a left onto City Hall Alley to the parking area. For more information on the home dedication and open house, readers may email mark@yorkhabitat.org or call 717-854-6168.
“Climb For Life Planned The 40th annual Climb for Life will take place on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m. at Roundtop Mountain Resort, 925 Roundtop Road, Lewisberry. Ironman Steve Jones has climbed up Roundtop Mountain in Lewisberry to raise donations for local charities for 39 years. This year, Jones will make his 40th and final trek up the mountain while carrying up to 500 pounds on his
back. Jones, of Camp Hill, will begin his ascent with 250 pounds on his barbell. As he makes his way up the mountain, volunteer spotters will add more weight, maxing out at 500 pounds near the top. Jones began training specifically for the event in April. He has raised thousands of dollars over the years to benefit local charities. Proceeds from this year’s
event will support addiction treatment and recovery services provided by Gaudenzia, a nonprofit drug and alcohol treatment provider. The public is welcome to attend. For more information or sponsorship opportunities, as well as to learn where to send contributions, readers may contact Jim Ingolio at 717-238-4200, ext. 1117, or jingolio@gaudenzia.org.
“Stuff The Truck Food Drive Set York County Food Bank will partner with Downtown Inc for a “Stuff the Truck Food Drive on First Friday, Nov. 2. A donation truck will be located in Continental Square in downtown York from 5 to 9 p.m. The community is invited to help feed families in need during the Thanksgiving season by bringing donations of canned turkey, tuna, chicken, ham, and salmon,
along with canned pumpkin, canned cranberry sauce, flavored rice, pasta sides, instant mashed potatoes, stuffing mix, canned gravy, candied yams, canned vegetables, canned fruit, mixed nuts, bread mixes, boxed cereals, cookie packs, brownie and cake mixes, instant gelatin and pudding, and nonrefrigerated desserts. With a donation of three or more food
items, donors will receive a 20 percent discount to use at participating downtown restaurants. All items collected will benefit the Give a Meal Program, which will provide 1,600 families with a holiday meal this year. For more information, readers may contact Debbie Krout at 717-846-6435 or debbiek@yorkfoodbank.org.
Orchestra To Honor Bernstein The York Symphony Orchestra will present “Musical Heroes on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 7:30 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. The Classical Series Concert will be part of a global celebration of the life and career of Leonard Bernstein, an American composer, conductor, author, music lecturer and pianist. Bernstein, who conducted some the great orchestras of the world for more than four decades, was one of the first conductors born and raised in the U.S. to achieve worldwide recognition. One of his most widely known compositions was the score for the musical “West Side Story. The global celebration is in honor of Bernstein’s 100th birthday. “Musical Heroes will begin with Bernstein’s “Serenade (After Plato’s ‘Symposium’), featuring concertmaster Denise Dillenbeck. “Serenade was completed in five movements and was inspired by Plato, a hero of ancient philosophy. Seven speakers from Plato’s “Symposium inspired the five movements of “Serenade. The second half of the concert will feature Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 1, which established the composer as Beethoven’s successor. The symphony took 21 years to complete, from 1855 to 1876. As early as 1877, audiences began comparing this symphony with Beethoven’s works. To purchase tickets, readers may visit www.YorkSymphony.org or call 717-846-1111.
