Bell Socialization Services Inc. has recognized the Northern York Regional Police Department as the recipient of the Pauline Whitacre Community Services Award. Presented to an individual or group that provides time and resources to enhance Bell’s mental health programs, the award was received at Bell’s fall annual meeting on Oct. 2 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in York. The Northern York Regional Police Department has worked with Bell’s assertive community treatment (ACT) team on many occasions over the past year, meeting staff members at client homes, parking lots, and stores to help coordinate the safety of mental health clients. Bell recognized the officers for exhibiting compassion and understanding when clients displayed extreme psychotic behaviors and for working collaboratively with staff members and respectfully with clients at all times. ACT program coordinator Christine Adkins nominated the police department for the award. Deputy Chief of Police Dave Lash and Lt. Gregg Anderson accepted the award. Bell Socialization Services Inc. is a human services agency based in York that provides housing and living skills supports to individuals living with mental illness, people with intellectual disabilities, and families that are homeless.

Grant To Expand Mobility Options
Big Brothers Big Sisters of York & Adams Counties, along with more than 270 Big Brothers Big Sisters affiliates across the country, recently unveiled a new look and brand repositioning with a goal of recruiting more diverse volunteers. Months of research, including focus groups with potential mentors, as well as current mentors, mentees, donors, staff members, and leadership members, showed that the brand was not effectively connecting with younger, prospective mentors or conveying the urgent mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters. The organization is intentionally pivoting from messages of the importance of mentoring to messages of the urgent need for the adults in the community to step up to defend the potential of every child. The mission will remain the same, as will the core model of building bridges in communities by connecting one adult with one child and supporting that match at every stage, but the organization will focus on a child’s potential and adults’ role in helping children achieve their best possible futures. Additionally, in the coming year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of York and Adams Counties will
transition to a new, modern, nationwide technology system; participate in new training; and use the new positioning to refocus efforts on recruiting local volunteers. The agency is in the middle of a recruitment campaign for volunteers from minority backgrounds, coordinating a Bigs in Blue program with volunteers from the York City School Police, and seeking to start a workplace mentoring program with a local business. For more information about the new brand positioning, the logo or messaging, or how to get involved, readers may visit www.bbbs.org/bigpotential. Updates are available at www. instagram.com/bbbs_yorkadams, www.facebook.com/BBBSYork Adams, and https://twitter.com /bbbsyorkadams using the hashtags #BBBS and #YorkAdamsBigs. Big Brothers Big Sisters provides children facing adversity with professionally supported one-to-one relationships meant change their lives for the better, forever. Older mentors are matched with at-risk youths and participate in enriching activities of their choosing. More information is available at www.bbbs yorkadams.org.

Discounted tickets are available by visiting www.susquehanna chorale.org/tickets or by calling the Messiah College box office at 717-691-6036. Tickets will be available for full price at the door. They are taught sight-singing, vocal technique, and expressivity through a challenging repertoire representing a variety of musical eras and styles. The participants represent 52 area school districts, as
well as homeschooling programs. The Children’s Chorale, conducted by Judith Shepler, is composed of students from fourth through eighth grades. The Youth Chorale, conducted by George Diehl, is composed of students from ninth grade through freshman year of college, and the Young Women’s Chorale, conducted by Dru Deitch, includes women from the same age group. Ensemble-in-Residence at Messiah College, the Susquehanna Chorale is an auditioned choir committed to artistic and expressive performance of a wide-ranging repertoire. Tedford and the chorale have received numerous accolades. The chorale is funded in part by the Cultural Enrichment Fund, the capital region’s united arts fund, and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
