Cultural Alliance Holds Listening Project Leading up to its 20th anniversary, the Cultural Alliance of York County wants to understand how it can best support and strengthen arts and culture in York County and position the organization for strength and sustainability into the next 20 years. To accomplish this, the group has worked with design thinking consultant Erin McGlaughlin to interview donors, volunteers, funded partners, non-funded partners, and community leaders over the past year to determine how the Cultural Alliance can meet the needs of the York community now and in the years to come. The Alliance is now sharing those findings and inviting the residents of York County to engage in an open dialogue on arts and culture through its online cultural listening project site at www.future -culturalyork.org. Unveiled at its annual public meeting on Nov. 13, the listening project site details the project methods, findings, and ways for members of the public to contribute their voices to the conversation. Members of the public are invited to visit the site

recently began a significant stage of its pilot. Ten student learners from Central York High School are engaged in volunteer job exploration experiences at SpiriTrust

Lutheran Assisted Living along with career preparation classroom education. Central York has an additional 10 students who are preparing to enter the PennWorks program in the spring. An additional 18 student learners from the Spring Grove School District will embark on their job-shadowing experiences later in the school year. By joining explicit instruction, workplace visits, and the ability to obtain certifications and competencies, PennWorks offers a pathway to integrated, competitive employment for students and adults by supporting them in becoming active, core members of their communities. Launched by PennCares Support Services earlier this year, PennWorks is delivering training, job exploration, certification, and employment readiness supports in collaboration with The York County Economic Alliance (YCEA), Central York School District, Spring Grove

Area School District, Lincoln Intermediate Unit 12, The Center for Independent Living Opportunities, and consultancy XtraGlobex Inc. This initiative brings together partners from the business, education, and human services sectors to create a pathway for individuals with disabilities to gain and maintain competitive and integrated employment with certification that is portable. PennWorks is funded by Penn Cares Support Services with the objective of preparing youths and adults with disabilities to work in an integrated competitive setting, with the same career potential, earning power, and opportunities to make choices in their employment. At this time, certificates include custodial technician, customer service, and food service, with more in development. More details about the PennWorks program can be found at www.pennworks.org.

Concert Will Kick Off YSO “Heroes!” Season The York Symphony Orchestra (YSO) will present a concert titled “The Eroica” on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. This concert is the first Classical Series performance of the 2018-19 season, “Heroes!” The Classical Series will open with Beethoven’s “Egmont” Overture, portraying the life and heroism of the 16th-century Dutch nobleman Lamoral, Count of Egmont. Egmont was a loyal subject of Philip II of Spain, yet he opposed the Spanish repression of the Netherlands. Egmont was captured and executed as a traitor for conspiring against the regime. The concert will also feature a special performance by York Symphony Orchestra principal trumpet Nathan Clark, as he performs the Trumpet Concerto by Johann Nepomuk Hummel. Clark is a York native and resides in York County with his family. He is also a member of the

United States Air Force Ceremonial Brass, primary substitute trumpeter for the Kennedy Center’s National Symphony Orchestra, and principal trumpet of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra and Apollo Orchestra. He regularly performs with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the National Philharmonic. An active performer and advocate of brass chamber music, Clark is a founding member of the Barclay Brass ensemble, which performs throughout the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. The concert will conclude with Symphony No. 3, “Eroica,” by Beethoven. “Eroica,” meaning “heroic symphony,” was originally dedicated to Napoleon, but Beethoven withdrew that dedication once Napoleon declared himself emperor. To purchase tickets, readers may visit www.YorkSymphony.org or call 717-846-1111.

Nathan Clark will be featured on Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto during York Symphony Orchestra’s season-opening concert on Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts in York.

College Sets Winter Commencement Approximately 300 students are scheduled to receive degrees from York College at the Wednesday, Dec. 19, winter commencement ceremony. The ceremony will begin at 10:15 a.m. in the Grumbacher Sport and Fitness Center’s M&T Field House. Alumnus and former trustee George Shorb will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters and will present the address. Josh DeSantis, director of the Master of Education program and recipient of the Presidential Award for Teaching and Mentoring Excellence, will also address the audience. Shorb entered York Junior College in 1965. He was drafted while a student and served in the Army’s 1st Infantry Division. He received two Purple Hearts for injuries sustained in Vietnam. In 1969, Shorb returned home to York and enrolled in what had become York College. An accomplished athlete, he played soccer and was the college’s first player coach on the golf team. He earned a bachelor’s degree in management in 1972, making him a member of the first

graduating class of the four-year institution. Shorb’s first job after graduating was with the Glatfelter Paper Company. He later worked in international sales as president of the Atlantic Paper Company in Philadelphia, and he is currently president and owner of First Capital Paper Company, which he established in 2005. Shorb was the first president of the York College Collegiate Council and later served as a trustee for 24 years before retiring last spring. During his time on the board, he chaired multiple committees, including finance, student life, and greens and grounds. His leadership was instrumental in the efforts to launch the West Campus expansion and to construct the Grumbacher Sport and Fitness Center. Shorb’s passion for education, athletics and service extends beyond his involvement with York College. He is a past chair of the York Catholic school board, served for 10 years as the chair of York Youth Soccer, and currently serves as chair of Misericordia Nursing and Rehabilitation Center

More than 350 technology professionals, addiction and recovery experts, college students, state officials and others took part in this year’s Code4PA, which kicked off on Sept. 20 in Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. The teams returned

on Oct. 20 to demonstrate their projects for judging. The app, called Care4PA, suggests services and treatment providers based on information provided by the user such as his or her location and insurance provider. Users can also view other patients’ ratings of providers. Over time, the app will use this feedback to refine and improve recommendations. The app also provides state officials with insight into provider performance and utilization. Participants used opioid data

from the state open data portal and other sources, as well as mobile, GIS and other technologies to develop app prototypes, data visualizations and other tools focused on prevention, rescue and recovery. The winning team is made up of Chaitanya Dedhiya, Aniket Gode, Ilsa Snyder, Jahnavi Deshmukh and Pratik Sawant from the Harrisburg area. They will receive special recognition, including a meet-and-greet with Gov. Tom Wolf, networking with commonwealth executives and publicity through press and social media. In addition to the grand prize winner, special prizes

were awarded for Best Use Innovation, Best Team, Best Use of Dataset/API, Best Use Case, Best Use of Geospatial Technology and Best Prototype or App Design. Code4PA is hosted by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in partnership with Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, Code for Philly, Technology Council for Central Pennsylvania, Western Pennsylvania Regional Data Center, University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, Heinz College/Carnegie Mellon University and industry sponsors. For more information, readers may visit www.code4pa.tech.

Customer Care Center Updated The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has modernized its online Customer Care Center www.customercare.penndot.go v - to make it easier to report concerns on state-maintained roadways with new mapping capabilities, optional photo uploads, and a mobile-friendly interface. The purpose of the new Customer Care Center is to make it easier for members of the public to share their concerns or feedback. The modernized service sorts concerns into categories: road or bridge conditions; removing something from a roadway; traffic, signs, or signals; ongoing roadwork or projects; or general questions and concerns. Users can map their current location to document a concern or choose an address or roadway, as well as other relevant location information, and even upload photos related to the concern. These descriptions will provide better information for PennDOT staff and can reduce the amount of time needed to gather more information from customers submitting concerns. As of Sept. 30, the previous Customer Care Center had nearly 45,000 concerns submitted this year. More than 96 percent

of those concerns have been resolved. Motorists are asked to be as specific as possible when providing locations of concerns. Motorists should report the county, municipality, street name, and state route number, which can be found on small black and white signs posted along state highways. In addition, a

description of any familiar landmarks would be helpful for Penn -DOT to locate the problem area. Maintenance concerns will be corrected as soon as possible. Emergency road repairs, such as road wash-outs, are handled on a top-priority basis. Concerns may also be reported through 800-FIX-ROAD (800-349-

The American Heart Association (AHA) offers several tips to keep everyone focused on how they can eat smart, move more, and be well this holiday season. The daily tips will make the holiday season Healthy for Good. 1. Balance is the key. People can enjoy some of the splurges of the season without overdoing it. For example, if someone is going to miss their workout for a holiday event, they can walk during lunch or ride their bike to work. If dinner is going to be a feast, they can opt for a light lunch. Individuals can save their appetite for the big meal by skipping the appetizers or serving lighter snacks like cut-up fruits and veggies. 2. Eat smart at special holiday events. Holiday events often serve up extra helpings of less-thanhealthy foods. As guests, individuals can eat a healthy meal or snack before they go to avoid overdoing it at the event. Hosts can challenge themselves to offer some delicious and healthier options using healthier recipes and cooking tips. 3. Keep the family active. When children are out of school, parents are encouraged to squeeze in some active chores and trips to the park. The video game marathon can be broken up with a physical activity break. Everyone can take advantage of cooler weather to get moving outdoors. 4. Sip smarter. Sugary beverages, including sodas, energy and sports beverages, sweet tea, lemonade, and coffee beverages, can be replaced with water or unsweetened tea and coffee to avoid excess calories. To make the switch easier, people can cut back

the amount of sweetener gradually until their taste adjusts. 5. Give oneself the gift of peace. When the invitations pile up, individuals should not be afraid to say no to some of them. If some down time is needed to recharge for the next party, take a break. Do something relaxing, like doing yoga or meditation, reading, taking a warm bath, or spending time in nature. 6. Keep portions in check. People can enjoy favorites without overeating. People are encouraged to put less on their plate and pass on that second helping. Another strategy is to split appetizers, entrees, and desserts with others. Standard portions can be divided into halves or quarters before serving. Using smaller plates when possible will make the plates look fuller. 7. People are encouraged to be their own barista and opt for lesssweet homemade versions of sugary coffee beverages, hot chocolate, and other holiday beverages. Marshmallows and whipped cream can be swapped out with steamed or frothed low-fat milk. 8. Keep up healthy habits. People can commit to staying healthy during the holidays. For example: “For the next three weeks, I will move more and do something active every day, have a healthy breakfast and limit the sweets, and get at least seven hours of sleep each night.” If someone does not completely give up their healthy habits, they will not feel like they have to start all over once the holidays are in the rear-view mirror. 9. For holiday eating events, whether potluck or not, people can

offer to contribute a lighter, healthier dish. That way, there will be at least one better-for-you option. 10. If alcohol is being served at a holiday event, individuals should alternate each glass with a glass of water. This will quench their thirst and fill them up so they will be less likely to overindulge. Non-alcoholic versions of beverages can be enjoyed to lower the calorie count. It is important to watch out for added sugars. 11. People should aim for seven to nine hours of sleep each night. Individuals should not let their wake-up time and bedtime get too far off their regular schedule. People should nap when needed and ditch the digital devices at night. 12. Treat oneself. People can try bite-size tastes or split portions of desserts and other holiday treats or choose fresh fruit for dessert. Seasonal fruits make great gifts, too. 13. Remember, the healthiest thing a person can drink is water People are encouraged to make it their go-to choice when they are feeling thirsty. Extra appeal can be created by adding fresh or frozen fruits, herbs, or a splash of 100 percent fruit juice. 14. Seasonal fruits and vegetables can give meals, snacks, and party dishes that healthy holiday spirit. Apples, dates, leafy greens, pears, pumpkin, root vegetables, sweet potatoes, and winter squash are healthy options. 15. People can make beverages sparkle by trying seltzer, club soda, or sparkling water for the fizz. For a festive holiday look, beverages can be garnished with whole cranberries and mint leaves. 16. People should find the time

to fit in fitness. People are encouraged to try to stay committed to their workouts when the holidays kick into high gear. But when a full social calendar gets in the way, people should try to squeeze some healthy activity like walking into their daily routine. People are also encouraged to do something active with the whole family. 17. If it is just not Christmas without eggnog, try a low-fat version or mix it with an equal amount of low-fat or nonfat milk. People can still get the flavor without as many calories. 18. Many holiday dishes can be packed with sodium. Breads, poultry, and canned soups are three common foods that can be loaded with salt. When shopping for ingredients to prepare their holiday meal, compare the labels and choose options with the lowest amount of sodium. Herbs and spices (like rosemary and cloves) can be used to flavor dishes instead of salt. 19. Spices can be used to flavor foods and beverages with less sugar. For example, a skinny hot apple cider can be made with unsweetened apple juice and plenty of cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and nutmeg. Garnish with whole cinnamon sticks. 20. Focus on being present instead of buying presents. When holiday stress starts to get to people, the two simple practices of mindfulness and gratitude can help. People are encouraged to focus on what they are doing right now and what they are thankful for. Slow down, take it one step at a time, and make wellbeing a priority.

State Route Will Be Renumbered

With ourThanks att th the

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is renumbering State Route 295 as State Route 297 through Newberry and Conewago townships in northern York County. PennDOT York County highway maintenance sign crews will be completing the necessary updates to the existing route signing. This will include any existing directional signing for roads that intersect the state route. This work is expected to be completed in December. Upon the completion of a recent construction project on Interstate 95 in Bucks County, a portion of the existing limited

access roadway was renamed Interstate 295. Due to the potential conflict involved in having two major Pennsylvania traffic routes designated as 295, it was decided that State Route 295 in York County would be renumbered State Route 297. Sign updates for the large green advance guide signs on Interstate 83 may take additional time since these signs, also referred to as type A signs, are serviced under contract work and not by Penn -DOT county personnel. Electronic maps issued by PennDOT will be updated once the signing modifications have been completed. PennDOT will

also reach out to York County first responder organizations, stakeholders and mapping/navigation websites to inform them of the change. Readers may subscribe to PennDOT news in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties at www.penndot.gov/District8. Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles by visiting www.511PA.com. Free and available 24 hours a day, 511PA provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 860 traffic cameras across the state.

from our wonderful community, but most of all we’d like to thank our amazing staff.

The York Elks group is participating in the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks’ Drug Awareness Program. The program consists of three contests designed to help educate youths on the dangers of illegal drugs. All posters, essays, and videos should relate to the theme “Drugs Take Away …” The poster contest is open to children in grades three, four, and five. Participants must create a poster on paper or poster board up to 12 by 24 inches. The theme must be on the poster along with a picture that represents the theme. Participants must draw their posters themselves. The essay contest is open to children in grades six, seven, and

eight. The essays must be typed and printed on 8.5-by-11-inch paper. The essays must be no more than 250 words, and the theme “Drugs Take Away …” must be noted on the essay. The video contest is open to pre-high school, high school, and post-graduation. Participants work as individuals or in groups. Videos should be two to five minutes in length and be submitted on a flash drive. Submissions for all contests are due on Friday, Dec. 28, to the York Lodge. All entries must include a personal information page containing the contestant’s name, address, phone number, school, and present grade. All entries become the property of

the Elks. A certificate of participation will be given to all entrants. The York Lodge will then select one winner from each contest grade level to move on to district competition. The winners that move on to district competition will be notified, as release forms will need to be completed. Winners of the district competition will move on to state competition. The winners of the state competition will be announced in April 2019 and will be invited to receive their prize at the Pennsylvania Elks Spring Convention, to be held in May in Harrisburg. For further information, including how to submit entries, readers may contact the York Elks Lodge at 717-848-2785.

Innovations Challenge Set Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) are reminding high school students in grades nine to 12 to submit their entries for PennDOT’s Innovations Challenge. The deadline for submission is Monday, Dec. 31. This year’s challenge asks students to look at innovative methods, aside from laws and

The Innovations Challenge aims to not only help students explore real transportation challenges that PennDOT is facing, but also open their minds to the possibility of working for PennDOT after graduation. Regional winners will be selected and invited to compete

in Harrisburg next year for the statewide championship. The statewide winning team will be awarded $1,500 from the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Traffic Services Association (ATSSA) to be divided among team members.
