York County Libraries launched the program in 2018 and held its first graduation ceremony for 68 children in August 2019. In total, this group read 72,443 books. Children who reach or surpass the 1,000 books reading goal by Wednesday, July 1, 2020, can take part in the second graduation ceremony on Thursday, July 30, 2020. The York County Libraries 1000 Books Before Kindergarten initiative is made possible due to support by program partners Stock and Leader and C&S Wholesale Grocers Inc. York County Libraries includes 13 locations that provide the latest in print and electronic information, bestsellers, Wi-Fi, story times, book discussions, and more. The locations’ librarians are advocates for lifelong learning, providing opportunities and resources for people of all ages. Through early childhood literacy programs, they seek to ignite a love of reading and learning in young children and empower parents as their children’s first teachers. youth services staff at 717849-6942. The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten early childhood initiative encourages parents to read 1,000 books with their children before the children start kindergarten. Families read at their own pace, and the 1,000book goal can be reached done in as little as one year if families read three books per day. The York County Libraries program is an offshoot of a national initiative. Children from the day they are born to the day they start kindergarten can participate. There is no cost, and all that is needed to participate is a free York County Libraries card. Registration is ongoing at local libraries, and families receive a passport to help track progress at each 100-book milestone. When participants reach 500 and 1,000 books, they are awarded special reading incentives at their library. According to Gilbert, staff members countywide can provide parents with book recommendations and tips for engaging children in reading. They also offer a variety of free educational programs and story times year-round.

The first race in the 2020 Wicked Cushion Esports Championship Series will kick off the season on Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Racing Xtravaganza show being held at the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave, York. Featuring $2,500 in prize money and a chance to drive a Scott Gobrecht 410 Sprint Car, the event will be composed of 96 of the best sim racers on dirt competing both online and in person at the show in York. The feature race will be made up of 12 in-person drivers alongside 12 online racers. Live from the Racing Xtravaganza, in partnership with Wicked Cushion, TIMSSIMS, Harrisburg University Esports and Victory Lane Racing, the first 48 drivers registered for the “live seats” will compete for 12 spots in the first A-feature points race of the champi-

onship series. The drivers registered to compete at the event will not only be eligible for the prize money, but they will also qualify to win the opportunity to drive the Scott Gobrecht 410 Sprint Car. The top finisher of the “live seat” drivers will be eligible for the prize. These racers will drive at the event in one of 12 custom-made sim racing rigs built by Tims Dirt Track Simulators. Directly following the “live seat” qualifying sessions held in person at the Racing Xtravaganza, the online portion of the event will be open to sim racers across the world. The online qualifying will be filled by 48 registered drivers that will compete for the 12 remaining spots in the A-feature points race later that night. Following the completion of both qualifying races, both online and “live seat,” a field of 24 cars

will be set for the first points race in the 2020 Wicked Cushion Esports Championship Series. These 24 racers, 12 from each qualifier, will race for a piece of the $2,500 purse, with $700 for the winner of the inaugural series race. Wicked Cushion and Wicked Energy Gum, mainstays at dirt track events across central Pennsylvania, are sponsoring the 2020 Wicked Cushion Esports Championship Series. Individuals may follow “Wicked Cushion E Sports” on Facebook for more information about the event, including additional sponsors, partners, guests, race day scheduling and race format. To sign up for the event, readers may visit https://wcecs1 .eventbrite.com. For more information about the Racing Xtravaganza event, readers may visit www.racingxtravaganza.com

Elizabeth Loucks the United Way of York County, it continues its mission of raising community funds, but the strategies have broadened in order to meet the growing and changing needs of people living in York County.

York CROP Walk Exceeds Fundraising Goal More than 400 people joined in the 50th Greater York CROP Hunger Walk on Oct. 13, 2019, by starting from four area churches approximately 1 mile from each compass point direction around Continental Square. The churches were St. Matthew Lutheran

Church, west; St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, north; Fourth United Methodist Church, east; and St. Paul Lutheran Church, south. Thanks to a matching grant from the Rev. Roger and Sylvia Burtner, the original goal of $50,000 was doubled, and the

walk raised over $116,000. Roger was a founder of the original CROP Walk in York County. York is known as the place where the name CROP Walk originated and also as the first community in the United States to reach its 50th CROP Hunger Walk.
