National Wear Red Day Is Friday, Feb. 7 The American Heart Association (AHA), a nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, together with its signature movement, Go Red for Women, encourages men and women to wear red on Friday, Feb. 7, in honor of National Wear Red Day. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and many groups across the country observe National Wear Red Day each year on the first Friday in February to raise awareness about heart disease as the leading cause of death among Americans, especially women. The AHA notes that heart disease and stroke symptoms can present differently in women as compared to men. The Go Red for Women movement is nationally sponsored by CVS Health and supported locally by companies throughout central Pennsylvania. CVS Health will offer no-cost heart health screenings at MinuteClinic locations nationwide on select Thursdays in February. To learn more, readers may visit https://cvshealth.com/social -responsibility/our-giving/ go-red-for-women. Readers may make a donation to support the cause at www.wearredday.org. Additionally, apparel, including the Red Dress Pin, is for sale at www.shopheart.org.

Tour Scholarship Winners Posted The York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) recently announced that 14 groups from 12 schools, totaling approximately 1,009 students, will participate in the YCSWA’s Tour Scholarship Program in 2020. The Tour Scholarship awardees for 2020 are: Devers K-8 Elementary - Kelly Petry and Dr. Jan Protopapas, grades three to eight; Dover Elementary - Diane Benner, grade one; Leib Elementary - Teresa Dull, grade four; North Salem Elementary - Nichole Neiman and Deb Wirth, grade two; Orendorf Elementary - Sue Smith, grade three; Paradise Elementary - Kathy Gross, grade three; Roundtown Elementary - Mark Fife, grade three; Shrewsbury Elementary - Cindy

In return for the tour scholarship, participants complete an activity or project on an aspect of solid waste management such as recycling or litter prevention. The RRC is a technologically

advanced and environmentally safe waste-to-energy facility where York County’s household trash is used as fuel to produce electricity. Tour participants get a first-hand glimpse into this process beginning with a presentation followed by a walking tour of key areas of the facility. The YCSWA facilitates responsible solid waste management through an integrated strategy that emphasizes waste reduction, education, recycling and resource recovery. The YCSWA is the owner of the York County Resource Recovery Center in Manchester Township and owns and operates a small load drop-off facility, a recyclable materials drop-off center, and an education center.

York Branch AAUW Slates Meeting

3920 East Prospect Road York, PA 17406

Kelby is a lifelong York County resident, and has been a teacher for 25 years. Kelby committed his life to Christ at age twelve, when he “understood salvation, but not necessarily discipleship”. About 24 years ago, however, Kelby sought God more seriously when his life took unexpected and unwanted turns. Kelby recommitted his life to Christ and has been actively teaching Sunday School with middle school boys, young couples, and most recently with elderly shut ins at Hanover Hall Nursing Home. Experiences with Kelby’s wife and her long-term health problems, as well as recent events in his own life, have taught him more than ever about the endless love and mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ. Kelby is still learning how to keep “a right perspective on his life as a Christian as he walks life’s journey”. Kelby’s message will focus on how God uses suffering, hardships, and sorrows in our lives. R053262

Emily Neideigh, secretary, talked about the organization and its participation in Give Local York, a countywide day of fundraising set for May 1: What is the mission of the Watershed Alliance of York? The Watershed Alliance of York (WAY) is committed to being an innovative leader encouraging locally-led watershed planning, restoration, and protection initiatives in the watersheds of York County, Susquehanna River, and

Chesapeake Bay region in the 21st century, through cooperation, public-private partnerships, and strategic alliances and in harmony with community, economic, and natural resources. Why is the organization excited to participate in Give Local York this year? The Watershed Alliance of York (WAY) is excited to participate in Give Local York this year to raise funds and increase awareness of the role of WAY in the local community.

CAYC Kicks Off Campaign At its 20th anniversary celebration event, the Cultural Alliance of York County (CAYC) announced the kickoff of its endowment-building campaign with a $500,000 contribution from the Arthur J. and Lee R. Glatfelter Foundation. This is the first gift made to the Pillars Endowment Campaign, which will build the operational capacity of the CAYC and provide dedicated annual resources to further the work of the arts and culture community in York County. Arthur J. Glatfelter, in partnership with other corporate leaders, founded the Cultural Alliance in 1999 to raise funds for arts and culture organizations in York. Over the last 20 years, CAYC has invested more than $10.4 million in financial support and $2.2 million in inkind support for the arts. The Pillars Endowment will build on the original operational donations made by corporate and individual investors through the William H. Simpson Pillars of the Alliance fund established in 2003. Pillars of the Past donors made an extra gift to CAYC to offset operational

costs and reduce the administrative expense burden each year, so more annual campaign contributions could be distributed to the arts and culture community. Through the Pillars Endowment Fund, gifts may be endowed in perpetuity to support the overall operations of the Cultural Alliance and provide annual funding to our innovative arts and cultural community. There are a limited number of naming opportunities available for the Pillars Endowment. Community members who are interested in more information on the initiative may contact Kelley Gibson at 717-812-9255 or kelley@culturalyork.org. Founded as a United Arts Fund in 1999, the CAYC’s annual campaign supports eight partner agencies that are essential to arts and culture in the community and, under its new more inclusive and diverse operating model, will be expanding its funding to further grow and strengthen arts and culture in York County. of Professional Baseball (ALPB) have announced that they are seeking names for each of their ballparks’ automated ball-strike system (ABS) radar panels (“robo umps”). Through the Atlantic League’s partnership with Major League Baseball, the previously nameless panels made history in the 2019 ALPB season by electronically determining balls and strikes and relaying the calls to umpires wearing earpieces. The ABS system at PeoplesBank Park in York was the first electronic system to call balls and strikes in a professional baseball game, calling a strike on the first pitch of the 2019 ALPB All-Star Game in York last July. MLB later used the ABS in its Arizona Fall League and announced earlier this year that it will test electronic balls and strikes in spring training games this year. Each of the Atlantic League’s seven home clubs are inviting their local supporters to submit suggestions for names for their ABS radar panels on the teams’ social media channels. The teams will announce the winning names on Valentine’s Day, Friday, Feb. 14. The Atlantic League’s 23rd championship season will kick off on Thursday, April 30, when the Sugar Land Skeeters host the York Revolution and the High Point Rockers host the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. Opening day for the Revs will be Friday, May 8, when the team welcomes the Road Warriors.
