The York County Agricultural Land Preservation Board invites residents of York County to consider the preservation of their farm through the York County Agricultural Conservation Easement Program. Certain program changes have occurred. The changes include that applications must be postmarked or received no later than the deadline of Saturday, Feb. 15. In addition, a signed easement boundary map must be attached identifying the proposed easement application boundaries. Two application revisions are permitted resulting in a signed map received no later than the Feb. 15 deadline. Incomplete applications will be returned to the landowner. The conservation easement cap has been reduced to $3,000 per acre. All required documents must be attached to the application as indicated on the application. Following qualification and ranking of all applications, the ranking scores and status will be posted in the Ag Land Preservation Office and on the York County Ag Land Preservation webpage. Copies of scores may be mailed to landowners upon
request. Selections of farms for easement appraisal and preservation will continue until easement funds are exhausted or the next deadline date in February 2022 is reached. Landowners may contact the office for an appointment to inquire about the program requirements, to have their farm qualified, or for a preliminary ranking run. Upon request, readers can receive the 2020 application packet by calling 717-8407400. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. Readers should note that the agency was slated to move to a new location at 2401 Pleasant Valley Road, Suite 101 York, on Jan. 23 and Jan. 24. Readers are encouraged to hand-deliver applications this year due to the relocation. The office was slated to be open for business on Jan. 27. For more details, readers may visit www.yorkcountypa.gov. The site contains program information, farm rankings, events, articles, and links. The preservation of farmland helps future generations to be assured that agricultural production will continue within their immediate community.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s (KPB) affiliate network offers annual special collections to seek to eliminate illegal dumping and littering of tires and other hardto-dispose items in local communities across Pennsylvania. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful affiliates, which are county- and municipalbased, collected a combined total of over 2,168,530 pounds of electronics, 21,018 tires, 6,011 appliances, and 61,122 pounds of household hazardous waste from local residents, emphasizing the continued need for disposal options for hard-to-dispose items. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful affiliates that offered special collections for their residents include Keep Cambria County Beautiful, PA CleanWays of Cumberland County, Keep Erie County Beautiful, PA CleanWays of Fayette County, Keep Huntingdon County Beautiful, Keep Juniata County Beautiful, PA CleanWays of McKean County, PA CleanWays of Mifflin County, Keep Perry County Beautiful, Tri-County CleanWays (serving Butler, Lawrence, and Mercer counties), PA CleanWays of Venango County, Westmoreland Cleanways, Keep Washington County Beautiful, and Keep York Beautiful. Many affiliate groups are able to keep their costs to their residents low by participating in the
Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Household and Small Business Hazardous Waste Collection Program that provides partial funding for the responsible recycling of all items collected. The items collected are sent to DEP approved facilities for recycling. Tires are processed into rubber mulch, play turf, rubber asphalt roads, and other items. The metal, plastic, and glass are separated from the electronics and appliances and sold for reuse in items such as metal rebar, glass aggregate and plastic cellphones, laptops, and other equipment. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful works to increase the availability of convenient, affordable disposal for certain items, such as tires, electronics, household hazardous waste, pharmaceuticals, and appliances. The Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Affiliate Network often works with local solid waste and recycling offices to identify local disposal needs and implement special collections. For more information, readers may visit the Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful calendar of events for 2020 collection events. Readers may contact their local county affiliate for more information about proper disposal by going to www.keeppabeautiful.org and clicking on Get Involved/Find an Affiliate.

Changing The World One Life At A Time “Tim, I know today is a workday for the project, but can I go to the Bible teaching this morning instead?” When Friends In Action (FIA) executive director Tim Johnston was approached with this question by a Rama Cay villager named Pete it was a moment to rejoice. Headquartered in Middletown, FIA supports mission work in areas of limited infrastructure worldwide by using con-
struction projects and other practical service to spread the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to people who have never heard it before. FIA has been at work among the Rama Cay people of Nicaragua since 2004, when village leaders invited volunteers to help with community rebuilding efforts. The greatest concentration of Rama is a group of 1,400 people who reside on a povertystricken island almost forgotten by the mainland. The World Health Organization reports that malnutrition is increasing each year for Rama children. They face widespread malnutrition, inadequate water and sewage systems, and sporadic public health measures. One of the Rama Cay Villagers whose life has been touched by FIA is Pete. Pete used to live in a 10-by10-foot thatched-roof hut with his commonlaw wife, four children, and many extended family members. His days alternated between binge drinking and trying to fish and subsistence farm his small plot of depleted soil. When FIA workers invited Pete to learn trade
skills, he jumped at the opportunity. For the past eight years, Pete has worked alongside FIA’s volunteer teams to dig wells, install boat docks, construct a pedestrian bridge, and clear land for a community playground and laundry/shower house. The masonry, carpentry, and construction skills Pete learned eventually enabled him to make his own clay bricks and build a new house for his family to move to the mainland. Pete also began attending ongoing Bible classes led by FIA volunteers. Pete’s story is just one example of the thousands of lives impacted through the efforts of FIA. In 2019, more than 70 workers from Pennsylvania traveled with FIA to impact more than 250,000 destitute people in six remote locations around the globe. Thanks to the generosity of local businesses, churches, and individual donors, in 2019 FIA brought clean water to more than 14,000 West Africans through well-drilling efforts; provided medical, dental, and vision assistance to more than 1,200 Bolivians along the Amazon River through the El Misionero riverboat ministry; and taught life and trade skills and God’s word to hundreds of students from Papua New Guinea, Nicaragua, Vanuatu, and Moldova through educational sponsorship efforts. The organization also impacted more than
215,000 villagers from remote bush regions of Brazil and Bolivia through the 24/7 broadcasts of Christian teaching and music on Inspiracion’s radio; provided more than 4,000 inmates in Papua New Guinea with water, biscuits, and prison ministry; and assisted nearly 150 Rama Cay through community transformation efforts in Nicaragua. Volunteers are welcome to sign up for trips in 2020. People with construction skills may be interested in volunteering to complete a Rama Cay laundry and shower house in May or to help develop a conference center in Vanuatu in June. In August, FIA will break ground on a massive five-year Water And Sanitation Health (WASH) project to bring 3,500 NiVan villagers of Vanuatu clean water. Mother-daughter teams are invited to host vacation Bible school and family teaching sessions in Nicaragua this July. Anyone interested in learning more about traveling with FIA may visit www.fiaintl.org/get -involved/trips/ or email fia-usa@fiaintl.org. “Now, more than ever before, there are urgent needs that we can meet,” Johnston stated. “God is raising people up who are passionate about being world changers by reaching out to one person, one community at a time. That’s something to get excited about.”
The Buy Local Coalition held its annual holiday mixer at Suburban Bowlerama on Dec. 18, 2019. Members of the coalition participated in a silent auction that raised nearly $2,200. Adding in a $1,000 donation from Buy Local Coalition, the total raised was $3,183, which will be split between two local nonprofits, Children’s Aid Society and Servants.
The Buy Local Coalition is a group of locally owned and operated independent businesses in York, Adams, Franklin, Lancaster, Cumberland and Dauphin counties. The group aims to educate the public about the benefits of spending money with local businesses as well as to promote businesses working with other local businesses.
