Ramping Up For Give Local York

Community REACH Hosts Insurance Talk

By Chelsea Peifer

On Friday, May 1, individuals and businesses will have the opportunity to take part in the third annual Give Local York, a 24-hour online giving event that will benefit more than 300 nonprofit organizations that serve York County. Community members may donate to the nonprofit organization of their choice at www.givelocalyork.org on that day, and all donations will be enhanced with bonus funds provided by Give Local York sponsors. “I like it refer to it as a holiday

for York County because it’s a day to celebrate all of the great nonprofit organizations that we have, said Meagan Given, executive director of Give Local York. “It’s a very high-energy day with lots of events going on. Participating organizations are encouraged to plan an event for the community to take part in on May 1, whether by themselves or in partnership with other participating nonprofits or local businesses to raise awareness about Give Local York. The day will culminate with a Give Local York celebration from 5 to 10 p.m. in downtown York during First Friday.

Marlin Bollinger from State Farm presented “The Basics of Insurance at Community REACH Inc., 15 First Ave., Red Lion, on Feb. 3. Community REACH is offering free programs for residents of the Dallastown, Eastern, and Red Lion school districts. For a calendar of upcoming programs, readers may visit www.commreach.org/education.html. To learn more about the organization, individuals may find “Community REACH, Inc. on Facebook or call 717-244-6934.

During Give Local York on May 1, people will be encouraged to donate online to support their choice of more than 300 nonprofit organizations in a 24-hour giving spree. All contributions will be enhanced thanks to the donations of event sponsors.

With hundreds of organizations set up and live music and dancing in the square, Given said, “it just becomes a big party. From 9 p.m. to midnight, a New Year’s Eve-style event will be hosted at the Valencia Ballroom, 142 N. George St., York. That celebration will close out Give Local York with a countdown to midnight. Confetti cannons will go off and there will be a balloon drop as the grand total amount raised is announced. More than $3.2 million was generated through the 2019 Give Local York event. Given said that while organizers are of course hoping to top that number, the focus for 2020 has shifted from setting a financial goal to having 10,000 unique donors - a hefty but achievable jump from last year’s 8,777 donors. “The focus on individual donors is shifting our marketing approach this year, Given explained. “We are still shining a light on each of the organizations and what they do, but we are also doing a lot of spotlighting volunteers. Organizations will also have the opportunity to publicize volunteer roles to encourage people to get involved in new ways throughout the year. Given noted that individuals may also sign up to fundraise for a specific organization with their own online peer-to-peer fundraising page. “People like to

Why is the organization excited to participate in Give Local York this year? In the first five years of operation, Northern Central Railway of York drew more than 105,000 visitors from 48 U.S. states and 15 foreign countries, generating more than $20 million in economic benefits and helping to solidify York County as a unique tourist destination. Northern Central Railway’s experiential programming educates, entertains, and enlightens visitors with a diverse schedule of excursions incorporating local history, as well as STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) initiatives, into fun themes that create memories that last a lifetime for all ages. Last year, even with limited resources, we did our best to maximize the potential offered by Give Local York and we met our goals! We hope to do even better this year to raise $15,000 to go towards the creation and development of more educational, enlightening, and entertaining events that help keep us on track!

Jesus Christ at age 12, when he says that he “understood salvation, but not necessarily discipleship.” However, Moul began to seek God more fervently approximately 24 years ago when his life took unexpected and unwanted turns. He recommitted his life to Jesus Christ and has been actively teaching Sunday school with middle school boys, young couples, and, most recently, with elderly residents at the Hanover Hall Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Moul shares that experiences with his wife’s long-term health problems, as well as recent events in his own life, have taught him more than ever about the endless love and mercy of Jesus. At the breakfast, his message will focus on how God uses suffering, hardships, and sorrows in people’s lives. The Rev. Lloyd Marchant first began organizing the annual Men’s Resurrection Breakfast at his church to fill a void he felt was created when Promise Keepers, an international men’s ministry, stopped holding breakfasts in the York County area. Marchant has reached out to men from the local area to speak each year. Men of all ages are welcome to attend. To register for the breakfast, interested individuals may call 717-755-0091 or email grace baptistyork@comcast.net. The deadline to register is Sunday, Feb. 23. A freewill offering will be received.

A total of 285 teams from 235 high schools across Pennsylvania are competing in district and regional levels of the Statewide High School Mock Trial Competition sponsored by the Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) Young Lawyers Division. Pennsylvania’s mock trial program is now in its 37th year. During the competition, eight-member student teams are given the opportunity to argue both sides of a case in an actual courtroom before a judge. The students, who play the roles of lawyers, witnesses, plaintiffs, and defendants, are assisted by teacher coaches and lawyer advisers in preparing for the competition. Lawyers

and community leaders serve as jurors for the mock trials. The juries determine the winners in each trial based on the teams’ abilities to prepare their cases, present arguments, and follow court rules. The district and regional levels of the competition will continue throughout February and March. Then, 14 high school mock trial teams will advance to the PBA Statewide Mock Trial Championships, which will be held on Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28, in Harrisburg. Trail-Way Speedway Releases Schedule Speedway owners Barry, Brad and Perry Hostetter recently finalized and released the schedule of events for Trail-Way Speedway’s upcoming 48th season of competition. Going into the 17th consecutive year as Trail-Way’s headlining division, the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic 358 Sprint Cars will return with 16 scheduled events, highlighted by the Friday, Aug. 7, Harvest Chapel Thunder & Lightning Classic and the Friday, Aug. 28, Trone Outdoor 358 Sprint Car Championship. The 270 and 600 Winged Micro Sprints will return in 2020 with 13 scheduled races apiece. The Micro’s season at Trail-Way will culminate with the 31st an-

nual Kevin Gobrecht Memorial/National Open on Saturday, Sept. 19. The Central PA Legends will join the Micro Sprints. Trail-Way will have 22 Limited Stock races and 14 Street Stock events. Also, the 22nd annual Thunder on the Farm is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 3. Classes featured will be the Street Stocks, Limited Stocks, Scramble Cars, Classic Cars and a 100-lap Enduro finale. The speedway’s lone 410 Sprint Car event, the fourth annual Armin Hostetter Memorial, will be held Sunday, Aug. 2, with a rain date planned for Sunday, Aug. 30. The Central PA Legends join the program, which will start at 7 p.m.

For the first time, the ULMS Super Late Models will rip around the famed 1/3-mile oval on the farm, as Trail-Way honors the life of Junior Eckert with the Inaugural Junior Eckert Memorial, presented by Viper Motorsports on Friday, July 24. Street Stocks and Limited Stocks will be on hand for the event. The Marysville Motorcars Super Sportsman Series will make a stop at Trail-Way Speedway on Friday, Aug. 14. The Wingless Sportsman Series will return to Trail-Way for two events on Fridays, June 26, and Sept. 4. Also receiving two events in 2020, the PA Sprint Series, featuring 305 Sprint Cars, will head to

Trail-Way on Fridays, May 29 and July 17. Two Junk Car events will highlight the 2020 schedule. The first will be Saturday, July 4, and Halloween Havoc is set for Saturday, Oct. 24. Due to a large turnout in 2019, the Scramble Cars have received five scheduled races. The Enduro cars, which run under the same rules package, will have two 60-lap events and a year-ending 100-lap finale. AMA Short Track will return to Trail-Way with two events planned for the 2020 season. The first is the AMA Vintage National Short Track, sponsored by Hannum’s Harley Davidson, on Saturday, May 2. The second

event is the eighth annual Armin Hostetter Classic planned for Saturday, June 6. The 2020 season will fire off with an open practice on Sunday, March 29. Gates will open at noon with practice running from 1 to 4 p.m. Three additional practice events were added to the 2020 schedule. Those dates are Tuesdays, June 16, Aug. 4 and Sept. 15. Gates for these events will open at 5 p.m., with practice beginning at 6 p.m. Opening Day 2020 is slated for Saturday, April 4, and will feature the 270 and 600 Micro Sprints, Central PA Legends and the Wicked Cushion PA Micro Midgets.
