WellSpan, Letterkenny Partner On The Front Lines Of COVID-19
Shawn Hind, Letterkenny Army Depot (center), discusses isolation gown materials with (from left) WellSpan Health performance improvement team members James Eichelberger and Srinath Asuri and Letterkenny’s Logan Robinson at the Army depot’s upholstery shop on April 22.
As discussions moved forward and the partnership took shape, Letterkenny shared its mask design for producing cloth community masks. Back in York, a couple sheets of plastic, garbage bags and a rain poncho were used in figuring out a prototype that would allow WellSpan Health to eventually mesh a material design to create isolation gowns. Letterkenny reallocated resources to adequately staff its upholstery shop to begin gown production. While the initial order was to make 70,000 protective gowns, Noll said that there was enough material to support production of at least 225,000. Letterkenny expected production to take six to eight weeks to fulfill the first order, while it provided weekly deliveries to a WellSpan distribution site. Noll added that innovative thinking and partnering with manufacturers throughout the five counties that WellSpan Health serves can allow the system to be less reliant on the national supply chain and be better prepared moving forward. For more information about WellSpan Health, readers may visit www.wellspan.org.

WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital, watched a local television newscast in early April that highlighted Letterkenny Army Depot’s upholstery shop, which produced around 4,800 cloth masks to protect its own employees. He wondered if a similar effort or collaboration could help protect a portion of WellSpan Health’s 20,000 employees. Massimilla shared the information about Letterkenny’s efforts with WellSpan Health’s performance improvement team, comprising hospital officials and engineers. According to Keith Noll, senior vice president - chief administrative officer for WellSpan Health, the team would later be nicknamed the “MacGyver team” after the star of the television series who uses unconventional problem-solving skills to save lives. The team, led by Debra Ruckert, senior director of performance improvement at WellSpan Health, utilized unconventional designs and paths to production that incorporated local manufacturers and distilleries, which had capabilities of producing anything from hand sanitizer to intubation devices and masks. Members of the hospital’s team visited Letterkenny Army Depot to learn more about its manufacturing capabilities. Typically, the upholstery shop at Letterkenny focuses on production of items such as canvas tents, kitchens and vinyl products.

As potential supply shortages became imminent for WellSpan Health because of COVID-19, leaders within the organization took a proactive approach by fostering relationships to secure necessary resources needed to care for communities and staff members. These efforts included forming a special partnership with Letterkenny Army Depot near Chambersburg. On May 1, Letterkenny started production of 70,000 protective gowns for WellSpan Health to help bolster the local health care system’s supply chain as it continues to navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, Letterkenny produced prototypes for cloth face masks for WellSpan Health, which has shared the designs with other community partners. Letterkenny Army Depot has been supporting frontline U.S. military efforts since the 1940s and stepped up to join a much different fight to protect people. In February, prior to its first patient testing positive for COVID-19, WellSpan Health was reacting to supply chain demand as production of personal protective equipment (PPE) in China was diminished due to the country’s battle with the pandemic, and PPE was redirected to U.S. cities already experiencing COVID-19. SPCA Updates Clinic Schedule The York County SPCA reopened its spay/neuter clinic with modified safety protocols on May 26. The organization was required to close the high-volume clinic in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Information from both the CDC and state and national veterinary medical organizations at that time dictated that elective spay/neuter surgeries must be temporarily suspended, both to conserve personal protective equipment and to prevent the spread of COVID-19. During the closure, caretakers were unable to have free-roaming cats spayed or neutered. The Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association has since revised its statement, now allowing veterinarians to use their professional judgement to resume these elective procedures, while still adhering to state policies and recommendations regarding social distancing. York County SPCA’s decision to reopen its spay/neuter clinic was made after careful consideration by the organization’s leadership team and by consulting recommendations from the CDC, the AVMA, and shelter medicine experts. In order to safely resume services, several modifications to scheduling, intake, and discharge procedures have been made. TrapNeuter-Return (TNR) services will be given scheduling priority with the goal of preventing pregnancy and new litters in the community cat population. Scheduling priority will also be given to those clients with a pet that may be pregnant. Once the clinic has caught up on TNR patients, the veterinary team will begin seeing rescheduled patients next. Due to the backlog of spay/neuter appointments, new patients will be seen beginning in August. New appointments can be made by visiting www.ycspca .org. The SPCA anticipates that the coronavirus will continue to delay scheduling for the remainder of 2020.

Revolution To Host Invitational Recognizing the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on seniors’ final years on the diamond, the York Revolution has announced that it is inviting area high school senior baseball and softball players to play in the Class of 2020 Baseball and Softball Invitationals at PeoplesBank Park this summer. While dates will depend on the easing of restrictions on organized sports and other regulations, team officials reported that the invitationals will take place on separate days at the ballpark for Class of 2020 baseball and softball players, respectively. The Revolution has created an online preregistration form to gauge the interest of seniors and will use their responses to craft the pick-up style series of games for baseball and for softball. The link to the sign-up form is available at www.yorkrevolution.com/team/ news-archive/?article_id=950. York Revolution president Eric Menzer said the team is considering dates in mid-July to
late July for the games and will further shape the events based on the feedback of area seniors. The current concept is to form teams joining seniors from all the YAIAA high schools under the leadership of a group of high school coaches. Mentzer

Located at the third-base upper corner, the new deck will incorporate the top three rows of sections 25 and 26 and will incorporate general admission seating, offering food and local and craft beers. Designed by Murphy & Dittenhafer Architects, the new addition will feature a wood-like deck with beverage rails. This marks the third project on which Wagman has partnered with the York Revolution. Wagman completed the preconstruction and construction for the stadium when it opened in 2007. In 2019, Wagman completed extensive renovations to the skybox level, including the new 1741 Club Presented by UPMC, designed by Murphy and Dittenhafer Architects. Construction began on the White Claw Terrace Courtesy of Ace Distributing shortly before Gov. Tom Wolf suspended nonessential business operations due to COVID-19. Construction will resume when permitted. Founded in 1902, Wagman is a fourth-generation, family-owned company with offices in Pennsylvania and Virginia and headquarters in York. Bailey Coach, based in Spring Grove, celebrated and recognized its volunteers for disinfecting 500 first responder vehicles since April 7. A small ceremony was held at Bailey Coach on May 5. As part of its mission to give back to the community, Bailey Coach dedicated one of its specialized electrostatic sprayers to be used on Mondays through Fridays from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. to disinfect first responder vehicles. The process to disinfect takes two to five minutes. The staff members who have been disinfecting the vehicles are volunteers from the Bailey Coach staff or their families. Bailey Coach plans to operate the free disinfecting to serve first responders in York, Adams and Lancaster counties as long as the disinfecting treatments are needed to keep the area’s first responders healthy due to the COVID19 pandemic. Bailey Coach is a transportation company which diversified in mid-March when 99% of its
transportation reservations had been canceled. Now employees travel to area life-sustaining businesses to provide disinfecting services. Staff members disinfect an average of 2.5 million square feet of space for 50 businesses each week, and on average, they are able to disinfect 15,000 square feet of space per
hour with electrostatic sprayers. These sprayers are commonly used in airplanes, cruise ships, hospitals and meat packing facilities. Bailey Coach had been using the sprayers in its vehicles for years to keep passengers safe. For more information, readers may visit www.baileycoach.com.

Driver’s License Renewal Updated The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently announced that it will use existing photos on file for customers who renew their driver’s license and identification card. All customers who renew their driver’s license or photo ID card online or through the mail will receive a new product using the most recent photo of that individual that exists in PennDOT’s system. No camera cards will be issued to these customers, and they will receive their new product by mail within 15 days. The renewal process is complete when the final product is received. Non-commercial driver’s license and photo ID card holders may renew their product online, providing that there are no corrections or changes other than a change of address, by visiting www.dmv.pa.gov. Both non-commercial and commercial drivers may renew their products through the mail. Additionally, non-U.S. citizens must also visit a driver’s license center in person to complete a transaction. For a list of reopened locations, readers may visit www.dmv.pa.gov. Expiration dates on driver’s licenses, photo ID cards, learner’s permits and camera cards scheduled to expire from March 16 through Sunday, May 31, have been extended until Tuesday, June 30. A Pennsylvania driver’s license is valid for four years, expiring on the day after the driver’s birthday. PennDOT will continue to send an invitation to renew to each driver three months prior to license expiration. Individuals age 65 or older have the option of renewing their license every two years, instead of the standard four years. See PennDOT pg 11

We Are Here for You! During these unprecedented times, remember Community REACH, Inc. is here for you and your family. Our friendly staff and volunteers are available to resource, educate, advocate, connect, and help those in need in our community.
A Choice Food Pantry Our “choice food pantry” is tailored to the dietary needs, preferences and size of your family. We welcome new guests to our pantry through an intake phone call, placing of your food order and curbside pick-up. Because of the increased volume of need in our community, please leave a message if your call is not answered!
Local, Community Focused Serving residents of the Dallastown, Eastern and Red Lion Area School Districts, call today if your family is in need of food to supplement your nutritional needs. Additionally, a variety of programs help provide school supplies, cold weather gear, Christmas gifts and special holiday meal boxes throughout the year for our most vulnerable neighbors.
Educational Programs The agency provides a monthly calendar of educational opportunities in the following areas: personal and family finance, literacy and high school equivalency, health and wellness, food and nutrition, employment readiness, and computer literacy. Several of these programs are using online instruction. All other educational classes will resume when it is safe to gather.
Thank You! Thank you to everyone who has supported our food pantry and our new educational program! Community REACH, Inc. thanks the York County Community Foundation and the United Way for their recent grant to support an increase in capacity to meet the needs of local residents in the Dallastown, Eastern, and Red Lion Area School Districts. Your continued support is essential for us to meet the demands of our community at this time of extraordinary need. Please contact us to see how you can make a difference in the lives of our neighbors.
COMMUNITY REACH, INC. A not-for-profit 501[c]3 community service agency since 1974 serving at-risk and low-income residents within the school districts of Dallastown, Eastern York, and the Red Lion areas through tangible assistance and educational programs.
