Through Friday, July 31, UStor-It will accept donations for the Children’s Home of York (CHOY). Items can be dropped off at either U-Stor-It location 1331 N. Sherman St., York, or 2786 S. Queen St., Dallastown. Items needed by CHOY include pens and pencils, both regular and colored; highlighters; crayons; markers; notebook paper; calculators; rulers; glue sticks; backpacks; and composition notebooks, with the exception of spiral notebooks. CHOY was established in 1865 to provide services to the orphans of the York County community. During the 1970s, the agency saw that it needed to re-engineer its services to meet the needs of the children and youths it served by providing smaller living situations. The agency responded by developing group homes and foster care.

CHOY, through the work of its board and staff members, has evolved through the years. The evolutionary process has taken the agency from the simple form of an orphanage to that of a continuum of services ranging from emergency shelter for safe refuge for abused and neglected children to state-of-the-art residential treatment facilities that offer therapeutic intervention to children, youths and their families who are working on complicated mental health situations. In addition, there are a variety of capacities like schools and group homes, each focused on its effort to improve the lives of children and families. Volunteers Sought For Fieldwork Lead Camp Security archaeologist John Crawmer has announced approval for the archaeological work at the Camp Security site. Phase one will occur from Wednesday, July 22, through Thursday, July 30. This phase will consist of excavation and/or laboratory work. Volunteers can register for the sessions for which they are available. Since spaces are limited and the work will start soon, volunteers need to sign up for this phase by Friday, July 17. Phase two will primarily include surface collection and metal detecting surveys over a larger area, as well as laboratory work, including cleaning and labeling objects found during the fieldwork. This phase will run
from Thursday, Sept. 10, through Thursday, Oct. 8. The deadline to register for phase two is Friday, Sept. 4. This year’s archaeological explorations at Camp Security are funded in part by a Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission Keystone Historic Preservation Grant. These grants, which much be matched by the recipients, are designated for projects such as cultural resource surveys and archaeological research. For more information or to register, readers may visit www.campsecurity.org, click on Our Newsletters under About Us, and select the latest newsletter. There is also a link to the form on the “Friends of Camp
Security” Facebook page. Prospective volunteers are asked to register as soon as possible. There are instructions on the form on submitting it to the lead archaeologist. Camp Security is situated in Springettsbury Township. It is the last known Revolutionary War camp for British prisoners of war that has not been almost completely developed over. Many artifacts have been found through past archaeological work at the site to confirm the camp’s location, but the exact location of the stockade, which is documented to have existed, is still being sought so that Camp Security can be properly interpreted. Any questions may be directed to campsecurity@campsecurity.org.

Attendees are encouraged to consult the weather forecast and dress appropriately if rain is predicted, as the village will not be able to crowd people into the buildings and covered train cars as has been done in the past. This summer, the Maryland and Pennsylvania (Ma & Pa) Railroad Heritage Village, 258 Muddy Creek Forks Road, Airville, will open on Sunday afternoons through Sept. 6. In addition to a motorcar train ride through the Muddy Creek Valley, visitors will take a 45-minute guided tour of the village, led by costumed historical interpreters. Four programs that include the guided tour and train ride will begin each Sunday at 12:30, 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. Restrictions due to COVID-19 have changed the way the society is operating this season, and the change will bring a new experience for visitors. Guided tours of the village, which are being offered for the first time this year, will give visitors a more comprehensive picture of the history of Muddy Creek Forks dating back to its first settlement in the 1730s. The primary focus, however, will remain on the early 20th century. Docents will share stories of the people who lived in the Muddy Creek Valley. Most of the tour will take place outdoors, although visitors

In celebration of National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company recently announced it has completed a 7-acre pollinator-friendly solar field at its corporate headquarters at 1149 Harrisburg Pike in Carlisle. This initiative aims to create a synergistic environment, which contributes both to clean energy and support for bee and pollinator populations needed within the agriculture industry. Honey bees pollinate $15 billion worth of food crops in the United States each year, yet populations have been experiencing a decline for more than three decades, the Giant Company reported. Beekeepers across the United States lost an estimated 40.7% of their honey bee colonies from April 2018 to April 2019, according to the latest annual nationwide survey conducted by the University of Maryland-led nonprofit Bee Informed Partnership. A pollinator field provides Giant with an opportunity to
educate team members, customers and the community about the role bees play in getting food onto their family’s table, noted Nicholas Bertram, president of the Giant Company. Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture deputy secretary Cheryl Cook added that nearly one-third of the nation’s food supply depends on pollinators, making bees an essential part of the food supply chain and ecosystem. The Giant Company has also been selected as the first grocery retailer and first Pennsylvania participant to take part in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s InSPIRE study, where scientists measure and track the performance of the pollinatorfriendly ground cover for applications to future solar energy projects. In addition to the benefits of the plants, the new solar array coupled with the one currently installed on the roof of the Giant Company headquarters will reduce 4.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide in the environment
and generate enough power for the entire building. Native seed mixes provided by Ernst Conservation Seeds will act as a vegetative solution to beautify the site and provide valuable ecological functions. The Giant Company hopes the native meadow established will create a habitat for pollinators, birds and other small wildlife while improving the quality of the soil beneath it, reducing runoff and creating an attractive backdrop to the site. The field includes more than 20 varieties of wildflowers native to the northeast and central Pennsylvania like butterfly milkweed, mountain mint, blue mistflower and golden Alexander. Robin Ernst, president of Ernst Pollinator Service, explained that as the field matures over the next few years, more than one million pollinator-attracting plants will provide pollen and nectar sources for honey bees and other pollinators, which will in turn pollinate local
farm fields. The Giant Company also announced a new strategic partnership with Planet Bee Foundation. Based in San Francisco, Planet Bee is a nonprofit organization focused on driving awareness for pollinators while creating environmental stewards of all ages, in turn contributing to the well-being of bees. In celebration of the new partnership and National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company announced a $50,000 donation to Planet Bee Foundation. Planet Bee Foundation has constructed the beehives for the pollinator-friendly solar field and will tend to the health of the colonies as the bees provide their essential pollinator services to the local ecosystem. The foundation is also helping the Giant Company develop educational signs that will be installed along the on-campus walking path to drive awareness about the importance of bees to the grocery and agricultural supply chains.

fundraising campaign, running through Saturday, Aug. 8. Rite Aid customers can add a donation to their in-store transactions, as well as donate online through Rite Aid’s social media channels. All proceeds will be received by the local community’s children’s hospital to fund critical treatments and health care services and to provide pediatric medical equipment and charitable care for 53 children’s hospitals in the communities that Rite Aid serves. This year will mark the 26th year that Rite Aid has conducted the Miracle Balloon fundraising campaign benefiting CMN Hospitals, raising and donating $95 million in support of children’s hospitals. This year’s effort comes with an unprecedented pandemic adding urgency to the cause. Children’s hospitals and their systems are actively
working to develop COVID-19 treatments and vaccines. At the same time, investments in telehealth service, personal protective equipment and coronavirus testing supplies have escalated hospitals’ expenses while the suspension of elective surgeries and routine procedures is costing hospitals revenue and impacting children in need of care. The Rite Aid Foundation will also direct funds raised through KidCents, its customer-generated charitable giving program dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of children living in communities Rite Aid serves, through the duration of the campaign. In April, the foundation also issued a special $250,000 grant to CMN Hospitals to address immediate needs related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

design thinking. WITF, the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Intermediate Units (IUs) 12, 13 and 15, partnered to provide the summer camp in a format that may spark interest in STEM and its related careers, support different styles of learning, remove obstacles to participation, and meet educational objectives in a rewarding way. The IUs recognized obstacles to participation could include families not having craft resources or broadcast television signals at home. To overcome these challenges, WITF assembled 3,000 resource bags and 300 antennas for IUs to distribute to partner locations that serve families directly. Each free resource bag contains pencils, a pencil sharpener, crayons, colored pencils, paper plates, construction paper, safety scissors, a glue stick and the curriculum packet with instructions in English and Spanish. During the eight-week camp, families will watch featured PBS KIDS programs like “ Wild Kratts” and “Hero Elementary”

ATTENTION ROTATOR CUFF AND SHOULDER PAIN SUFFERERS! New Rotator Cuff Workshop Reveals How to Naturally Heal Shoulder Pain for Good Without Medications, Injections or Surgery… Do you have shoulder pain when you reach up high overhead? Does it bother you to lift something heavy? Having trouble reaching behind your back? Problems sleeping at night? Has reaching into the back seat become impossible? Have you changed the way you do yardwork, housework or get dressed because of shoulder problems? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) – the Rotator Cuff Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “When I first came in, I was having trouble doing simple things around the house from an injury to my shoulder after a fall. My shoulder hurt emptying the dishwasher, putting dishes away, picking up a full pot of coffee in the morning, and reaching items above my head. Now I can do all chores and more PAIN FREE!” - Susan B. Hello, Rotator Cuff and Shoulder Pain can completely ruin your life… I’ve seen it many times. 4 It can stop you from feeling like a normal person… 4 It can make you change the way you move doing everyday activities… 4 It can make sleeping at night nearly impossible leaving you feeling tired all day long… And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting…not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems… and life problems. Here at Madden PT, our Rotator Cuff Experts have helped 100’s of people who have suffered needlessly with rotator cuff pain…it’s our specialty. So by request, I’m hosting a Rotator Cuff Workshop here at Madden Physical Therapy in Shrewsbury in the Giant Shopping Center (right next to AAA) on Wednesday, July 22nd at 7 PM… If 4 4 4 4 4
you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: The Single Biggest #1 Mistake shoulder pain sufferers make which actually stops them from healing AND can surprisingly lead to SURGERY… The 3 Most Common Causes of Rotator Cuff Problems… A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money) The Single WORST Position to Sleep in that Causes BIG Problems in the Shoulder and Rotator Cuff… What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery.
How Do I Register for the Rotator Cuff Workshop? Call our office to register at 717-210-9945.
Ask for Heather…
When you register, we will mail you The Rotator Cuff Worksheet which you will bring with you to the event. We only have 15 seats available for the event… So, if you would like to attend, be sure to register now… Call 717-210-9945. How Much Is It to Attend? The Rotator Cuff Workshop is FREE to those who register with Heather at 717-210-9945. Looking forward to seeing you there, Matt Conroy, Physical Therapist Madden Physical Therapy
