Local Wedding Spotlights

This summer, the Maryland and Pennsylvania (Ma & Pa) Railroad Heritage Village, 258 Muddy Creek Forks Road, Airville, will open on Sunday afternoons through Sept. 6. In addition to a motorcar train ride through the Muddy Creek Valley, visitors will take a 45-minute guided tour of the village, led by costumed historical interpreters. Four programs that include the guided tour and train ride will begin each Sunday at 12:30, 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. Restrictions due to COVID-19 have changed the way the society is operating this season, and the change will bring a new experience for visitors. Guided tours of the village, which are being offered for the first time this year, will give visitors a more comprehensive picture of the history of Muddy Creek Forks dating back to its first settlement in the 1730s. The primary focus, however, will

remain on the early 20th century. Docents will share stories of the people who lived in the Muddy Creek Valley. Most of the tour will take place outdoors, although visitors will be led through the store and mill by tour guides. Tours will take place rain or shine. Attendees are encouraged to consult the weather forecast and dress appropriately if rain is predicted, as the village will not be able to crowd people into the buildings and covered train cars as has been done in the past. Separate fees have been set for adults and for children. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, capacity is limited to 25 people on each train. Purchasing tickets in advance at www.MaAndPaRailroad.com is recommended. To protect the safety of visitors and volunteers, the heritage village will follow policies established by public health officials.

Volunteers and staff sanitized the train at Ma & Pa Railroad, which recently reopened to the public. The train is sanitized prior to each trip. The motorcar train will be sanitized before every trip, and all visitors and staff will be required to wear face masks and to maintain social distancing to the extent feasible. By purchasing a ticket, visitors agree that they will follow those requirements. The status of special events planned for this summer and listed in the 2020 brochure has not

yet been determined. Some or all of these events and Saturday operations associated with them may have to be canceled. Those interested in attending should check www.MaAndPaRailroad.com or www.facebook.com/MaAndPa Railroad/ for updates. Additional information on special events and full schedules can be found at www.MaAndPaRailroad.com.

Women’s Group Plans Summer Social “Hike For H2O” Virtual Event Planned The York Women’s Association (YWA) will host a summer social on Monday, July 27, at 6 p.m. at William Kain Park, 247 Hess Farm Road, York. Members are asked to bring a dish to share. For more information or to attend the event, readers may contact Kate at katem413@gmail.com. YWA is an all-volunteer, nonprofit women’s organization with a mission to promote educational and cultural interests, to further

civic improvements, to engage in philanthropic activities, and to promote social activities that provide lasting friendships. Membership is open to women age 21 and older who reside in York County. Members also participate in various other activities, including volunteering at a food bank, the York Literacy Program, and the SPCA, as well as participating in the Canasta Club, Book Club, Travelling Lunch Ladies, Steppin’ Out, and Gourmet Club.

Meetings are usually held at the Codorus Valley Corporate Center, 105 Leader Heights Road, York, next to the PeoplesBank, and take place on the first Monday of each month from September through May. Most meetings include a speaker or activity, as well as light refreshments. For more information, readers may visit yorkwomensassociation.com or contact Kate at the aforementioned email address.

The Hike for H2O has begun and will continue through Sunday, Aug. 16. The virtual hiking and fundraising event gets people outdoors on a trail while creating sustainable change for those in need of access to clean, easily accessible water. More than 2 billion people live without access to clean water, according to organizers. On average in Africa, women and children walk four miles each day to gather dirty water that often causes disease and death for the members of their communities. In recognition of this distance, the Hike for H20 requires participants to walk at least four miles, anywhere and anytime through Aug. 16. Proceeds will benefit nonprofits Water for Good in Central

African Republic, Let Them LOL in Sierra Leone, and Global Samaritans in Zambia. All proceeds and donations will directly benefit well drilling projects. The event seeks 365 participants who will each raise $100. The total of $36,500 will provide lifelong clean water sources in three communities, giving 7,000 people the gift of lifelong clean water. There is a registration fee, which includes a wicking shirt and event patch. Participants can set up a fundraiser on the registration platform. Participants are also asked to take photos during their walk and post the photos to social media to raise awareness. For details and registration, readers may visit www.hike forh2o.org.

State Farm To Offer Grants To Nonprofits A grant funding opportunity from State Farm is being offered for nonprofits. State Farm Neighborhood Assist will award $25,000 grants to 40 nonprofit organizations to help fund neighborhood improvement projects. In a recent State Farm research study, one-quarter of respondents said that they are “extremely” or “very” involved in trying to improve their neighborhood and six in 10 said they are trying to improve their neighborhood in some capacity. State Farm Neighborhood Assist aims to be a catalyst for that change. Individuals can submit a cause at www.neighborhood assist.com. A submission guide is available on the website. State Farm will accept the first 2,000 submissions. The State Farm Review Committee will then narrow the field to the top 200 finalists. Voters will decide which community improvement projects win. The public will have a chance to vote 10 times a day, every day for 10 days, from Wednesday, Sept. 23, through Friday, Oct. 2, for their favorite causes from the list of finalists. The 40 causes that receive the most votes will each win a $25,000 grant. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, Nov. 4. Last year, 163,000 people cast a total of 4.4 million votes in support of their favorite causes, selecting winners from small towns and big cities. Since the program began, State Farm has awarded $8 million in support of more than 300 causes. Free Online STEM Camp Slated broadcast television signals at home. To overcome these challenges, WITF assembled 3,000 resource bags and 300 antennas for IUs to distribute to partner locations that serve families directly. Each free resource bag contains pencils, a pencil sharpener, crayons, colored pencils, paper plates, construction paper, safety scissors, a glue stick and the curriculum packet with instructions in English and Spanish. During the eight-week camp, families will watch featured PBS KIDS programs like “Wild Kratts” and “Hero Elementary” on WITF TV to learn about animal habitats, camouflage, mimicry, structure and more. A discussion guide and key vocabulary will help caregivers talk to their children about what they are watching. Then families will work together on an animal habitat design project using the materials in the resource bags. The curriculum also includes introductions to STEM careers for young learners, a suggested book list and links to extension STEM games and activities online. The partners hope that participation in the “Summer STEM Adventure!” brings many positive

WITF announced that central Pennsylvania families seeking a fun, educational experience at home can join the free “Summer STEM Adventure!” Based on the “Engineering By Design” curriculum, the summer camp style experience will guide families through a combination of PBS KIDS television programs, discussion questions, structured craft activities and career exploration for children in kindergarten through fourth grade. Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education is a student-centered approach that encourages development of skills such as problem solving, curiosity, communication and design thinking. WITF, the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Intermediate Units (IUs) 12, 13 and 15 partnered to provide the summer camp in a format that may spark interest in STEM and its related careers, support different styles of learning, remove obstacles to participation, and meet educational objectives in a rewarding way. In celebration of National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company recently announced it has completed a 7-acre pollinatorfriendly solar field at its corporate headquarters at 1149 Harrisburg Pike in Carlisle. This initiative aims to create a synergistic environment, which contributes both to clean energy and support for bee and pollinator populations needed within the agriculture industry. Honey bees pollinate $15 billion worth of food crops in the United States each year, yet populations have been experiencing a decline for more than three decades, the Giant Company reported. Beekeepers across the United States lost an estimated 40.7% of their honey bee colonies from April 2018 to April 2019, according to the latest annual nationwide survey conducted by the University of Maryland-led nonprofit Bee Informed Partnership. A pollinator field provides Giant with an opportunity to educate team members, customers and the community about the role bees play in getting food onto their family’s table, noted Nicholas Bertram, president of the Giant Company. Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture deputy secretary Cheryl Cook added that nearly one-third of the nation’s food supply depends on pollinators,

making bees an essential part of the food supply chain and ecosystem. The Giant Company has also been selected as the first grocery retailer and first Pennsylvania participant to take part in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s InSPIRE study, where scientists measure and track the performance of the pollinatorfriendly ground cover for applications to future solar energy projects. In addition to the benefits of the plants, the new solar array coupled with the one currently installed on the roof of the Giant Company headquarters will reduce 4.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide in the environment and generate enough power for the entire building. Native seed mixes provided by Ernst Conservation Seeds will act as a vegetative solution to beautify the site and provide valuable ecological functions. The Giant Company hopes the native meadow established will create a habitat for pollinators, birds and other small wildlife while improving the quality of the soil beneath it, reducing runoff and creating an attractive backdrop to the site. The field includes more than 20 varieties of wildflowers native to the northeast and central Pennsylvania like butterfly milkweed, mountain mint, blue mistflower

and golden Alexander. Robin Ernst, president of Ernst Pollinator Service, explained that as the field matures over the next few years, more than one million pollinator-attracting plants will provide pollen and nectar sources for honey bees and other pollinators, which will in turn pollinate local farm fields. The Giant Company also announced a new strategic partnership with Planet Bee Foundation. Based in San Francisco, Planet Bee is a nonprofit organization focused on driving awareness for pollinators while creating environmental stewards of all ages, in turn contributing to the well-being of bees. In celebration of the new partnership and National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company announced a $50,000 donation to Planet Bee Foundation. Planet Bee Foundation has constructed the beehives for the pollinator-friendly solar field and will tend to the health of the colonies as the bees provide their essential pollinator services to the local ecosystem. The foundation is also helping the Giant Company develop educational signs that will be installed along the on-campus walking path to drive awareness about the importance of bees to the grocery and agricultural supply chains.

This year will mark the 26th year that Rite Aid has conducted the Miracle Balloon fundraising campaign benefiting CMN Hospitals, raising and donating $95 million in support of children’s hospitals. This year’s effort comes with an unprecedented pandemic adding urgency to the cause. Children’s hospitals and their systems are actively working to develop COVID-19 treatments and vaccines. At the same time, investments in telehealth service, personal protective equipment and coronavirus testing supplies have escalated hospitals’ expenses while the suspension of elective surgeries and routine procedures is costing hospitals revenue and impacting children in need of care. The Rite Aid Foundation will also direct funds raised through KidCents, its customer-generated charitable giving program dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of children living in communities Rite Aid serves, through the duration of the campaign. In April, the foundation also issued a special $250,000 grant to CMN Hospitals to address immediate needs related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

New Trail Towns Program Posted other projects identified by each community. During the past several months, the YCEA - working in partnership with York County Parks, York County Rail Trail Authority, and Explore York conducted dozens of interviews, surveyed the trail-related services and assets in each community, and sketched out a process that will lead to each community officially becoming a York County Trail Town. This summer, residents will be engaged in conducting inventories of their towns intended to gather feedback on their community from the perspective of a trail user. York County celebrated new sections of the Heritage Rail Trail in 2019 and anticipates the entire trail completion in 2021. YCEA’s Trail Towns program is part of an overall strategy to boost the economies of the small, historic communities throughout York County. Although the first phase is limited to five communities, future phases of the Trail Towns program could support communities along the Hanover Trolley Trail, such as Hanover and Spring Grove, and communities like Wrightsville, which is emerging as a recreational hub at the crossroads of the Susquehanna River, Northwest River Trail, and Mason-Dixon Trail. To learn more about the York County Trail Towns program, readers may visit www.yorkcountytrailtowns.com.

In recent weeks, Americans have turned to parks, trails, streams, and open space in historic numbers, as a respite from the chaos of the ongoing public health and economic crisis. In York County, the 21-mile York Heritage Rail Trail has become a magnet for county residents seeking fresh air, healthy recreation, and mental relaxation in a setting that lends itself to social distancing. As a result, the York County Economic Alliance (YCEA) announced the launch of the York County Trail Towns program in five communities along the York Heritage Rail Trail. These communities are York, Seven Valleys, Glen Rock, Railroad, and New Freedom. The goal of the Trail Towns program is to use the Heritage Rail Trail as a platform for economic development by encouraging hundreds of thousands of annual trail users to venture off the trail and into the towns to patronize local businesses. The ability to launch this program is made possible through the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. State Sen. Kristin PhillipsHill helped secure a $300,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, allowing the YCEA to provide funding directly to projects that support the program, such as wayfinding, promotional materials, educational workshops for businesses, physical improvements, and

U-Stor-It Donation Drive To Benefit CHOY Rotary Club Awards Scholarships Through Friday, July 31, UStor-It will accept donations for the Children’s Home of York (CHOY). Items can be dropped off at either U-Stor-It location 1331 N. Sherman St., York, or 2786 S. Queen St., Dallastown. Items needed by CHOY include pens and pencils, both regular and colored; highlighters; crayons; markers; notebook paper; calculators; rulers; glue sticks; backpacks; and composition notebooks, with the exception of spiral notebooks. CHOY was established in 1865 to provide services to the orphans of the York County community. During the 1970s,

the agency saw that it needed to re-engineer its services to meet the needs of the children and youths it served by providing smaller living situations. The agency responded by developing group homes and foster care. CHOY, through the work of its board and staff members, has evolved through the years. The evolutionary process has taken the agency from the simple form of an orphanage to that of a continuum of services ranging from emergency shelter for safe refuge for abused and neglected children to state-of-the-art residential treatment facilities that offer therapeutic intervention to

children, youths and their families who are working on complicated mental health situations. In addition, there are a variety of capacities like schools and group homes, each focused on its effort to improve the lives of children and families. More information about the Children’s Home of York can be found at www.childrens homeofyork.org. For more information about U-Stor-It, readers may call 717-840-9369 or email ustoryork@comcast.net.

ATTENTION BACK PAIN AND SCIATICA SUFFERERS! Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop Reveals How to Naturally Heal Back Pain and Sciatica For Good. Do you suffer with back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk? Do you have pain when you sit for long periods or drive? Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling into your butt, groin or down your leg? Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way? Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) – the Lower Back and Sciatica Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “Before coming to Madden, I was having pain in my hip and leg from Sciatica, which impacted my daily activities, such as sitting, standing and walking. I was not sleeping well, and could not get comfortable. Now my pain has decreased and I’m now able to move freely and confidently, and my pain level has dropped and I can now sleep well.” -Denise G. Hello, Back pain and sciatica can completely ruin your life…I’ve seen it many times. 4 It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing)… 4 It can take your focus away on enjoying your life…like spending time with your children or grandchildren… 4 It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do… 4 And it can take away your ability to live life…having to rely on others…or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting…not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems… and life problems. Here at Madden Physical Therapy the Sciatica and Lower Back Specialists have helped 1000’s of people who have suffered needlessly with lower back pain and sciatica…it’s our specialty. So by request, I’m hosting a Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop here at Madden Physical Therapy in Shrewsbury in the Giant Shopping Center (right next to AAA) on Wednesday, August 5th at 7:00 PM. If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: 4 The Single Biggest #1 Mistake back pain and sciatica sufferers make which actually stops them from healing… 4 The 3 Most Common Causes of Lower Back Pain and Sciatica… 4 A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money) 4 How a problem in your back can cause pain, numbness or tingling in your leg… 4 What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery. How Do I Register for the Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop? Call to register at 717-210-9945. When you register, we will mail you The Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Worksheet which you will bring with you to the event. We only have 15 seats available for the event…so if you would like to attend, be sure to register now… Call 717-210-9945.

Looking forward to seeing you there,

Matt Conroy
