Preschool Children Reach Reading Milestone

Currently Hiring for the Following Positions: • Residential Direct Support Professional

York County Libraries (YCL) president Robert F. Lambert and youth services director Paula Gilbert have announced initial results of the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program. The early childhood initiative launched in October, and York County Libraries recently held its first graduation ceremony for 1000 Books readers. The initiative is an offshoot of a national program, and YCL put its own spin on the program to encourage York County families to read with their young children. According to Gilbert, 68 children and their families achieved the goal of reading 1,000 books in the program’s first nine months from Oct. 1, 2018, to July 1, 2019. All totaled, this group read 72,443 books during this period. At 1,000 books each, the total would have been 68,000 books. The group kept reading, collectively logging an additional 4,443 books. This group was the first to receive 1000 Books

Before Kindergarten diplomas from YCL. YCL officials set an initial goal of having 1,000 children register for the program in the first year. According to Lambert, by the beginning of July, 1,942 children were enrolled, and they had read 252,760 books. By July 30, participation had jumped to 2,041. Children from the day they are born to the day they start kindergarten may participate in the program. There is no cost, and all that is needed to participate is a free YCL card. All YCL locations participate in the program, and registration is open year-round. Children who reach the 1,000-book goal between July 2, 2019, and July 1, 2020, will be part of YCL’s second graduation in August 2020. YCL includes 13 libraries that provide print and electronic information, bestsellers, Wi-Fi, story times, book discussions and more. To learn more, readers may visit www.yorklibraries.org.

York County Libraries president Robert F. Lambert (front, left) and state Rep. Carol Hill-Evans (back, left) congratulate 2-year-old Henry Nye (front, right) during York County Libraries’ first 1000 Books Before Kindergarten graduation ceremony. Henry and his mother, Andrea Nye (back, right), met and exceeded the goal of reading 1,000 books, and they plan to continue reading to reach 10,000 books before Henry enters kindergarten.

As Hospice & Community Care (HCC) donor relations manager Coco Minardi reviewed the items pulled for a photo to advertise the 35th annual Labor Day Auction set for Saturday, Aug. 31, and Monday, Sept. 2, she laughed. “An autographed football, a life-size NASCAR poster, a quilt, and a mailbox: That’s the randomness of the auction right there.” Indeed, at first glance it might seem like the epic two-day sale is full of a jumble of items every year, but it is all very deliberate. The things that have been donated to the auction are grouped by type, such as plants, quilts, sports memorabilia, used cars, and artwork. This year, the event will feature a tool auction for the first time. “ We work with the Amish community, and they do all of our food, which brought in

$80,000 last year, but not many Amish people attend the auction,” Minardi explained. In an effort to appeal to more Amish folks, the auction committee asked for advice, and “add tools” was the resounding response. “We called local construction companies, and hospice families have been cleaning out their sheds,” Minardi said. Decommissioned commercialgrade tools and equipment, as well as household tools, have been donated for the auction, and they will be sold to the highest bidders on Aug. 31 from 9 a.m. to noon in the second half of the plant building. “We’re hoping we strike a chord with people who are do-it-yourselfers or Amish,” Minardi remarked. The Labor Day Auction started in Lampeter, but four years ago, the event moved to the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville, where it has flourished. The site offers ample free parking, and there is team parking at the venue as well. Golf carts will be available to shuttle people to and from their cars as needed. Minardi reported that the first auction more than three decades ago raised $1,300, and the advertising material was not even the size of a half-sheet of letter paper. Last year’s

event brought in $760,000. “We can’t fit all (of the details) on anything smaller than eight pages,” she marveled. The fairgrounds will open at 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2 so visitors may register for bidder numbers, purchase their allyou-can-eat food passes, and preview the items. The food tents will open on Aug. 31 at 9 a.m. and will feature omelets and sticky buns for breakfast and pork barbecue for lunch. Breakfast logs - those culinary delights of bacon or sausage, scrambled eggs, and cheese baked in a buttery soft pretzel crust - will be available when the food tents open at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 2. Minardi noted that an HCC volunteer is known to bring a cooler to the sale so she can buy two dozen breakfast logs to take home, freeze, and enjoy later. Sept. 2 will also feature barbecued chicken and ribs, as well as doughnuts made on-site. The food offerings on both days will include fried shrimp, a salad bar, fresh fruit, smoothies, chocolate milk, and more. Minardi and the auction committee are still accepting donations for the auction. They are especially looking for used cars and quilts. A number of unique items have already been donated. Of special note are Ty Cobb baseball cards from 1909 and 1911. The collectors’ items will be sold on Sept. 2 at noon in the sports building. An Amish buggy will be up for bids, as well as sheds, a gazebo, and vacation

Hospice & Community Care staff members (from left) Devon Fiore, special events coordinator; Coco Minardi, donor relations manager; and Allie Bucher, communications manager, display a tiny sample of the items that will be sold at the 35th annual Labor Day Auction in Quarryville on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2.

For folks who would like to contribute to HCC without taking things home, the Day of Care Auction, which is sponsored by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc., will be held at noon both days. Television personalities Corinne Lillis and Anne Shannon will host the auctions, during which attendees may virtually purchase days of care for hospice clients. The average daily cost of providing hospice care for one person is $187, Minardi said. The proceeds from the Labor Day Auction will go directly to HCC’s programs. The nonprofit organization has operations in Lancaster and York counties and provides palliative care, bereavement help, chaplain and auxiliary services, individual and group counseling, physical and online resource libraries, and more. In 2018, HCC served more than 15,000 families. Minardi noted that HCC serves more than 60 percent of the people who die in Lancaster County and a quarter of the deceased in York County. HCC also offers services for people who have experienced tragic loss, including the death of pets. Railroad Slates Train Ride

York Revolution Mascots Visit Credit Union

The Stewartstown Railroad, 21 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Stewartstown, will run a New Freedom Special, a train ride from Stewartstown to New Freedom and back, on Saturday, Aug. 24. The ride will begin at the Stewartstown Station at 10 a.m. The train will stop briefly at the railroad’s Hungerford Station, located on South Main Street in Shrewsbury, before proceeding the rest of the 7.4 miles to New Freedom. The ride will take approximately an hour. Once in New Freedom, passengers will have an opportunity to walk around, sightsee, or grab a snack as the train waits for approximately an hour before returning to Stewartstown, where it will arrive at approximately 1 p.m. The New Freedom Special is timed so attendees may see Steam Into History’s steam locomotive depart. The New Freedom Special consists of small trains called motorcars, or speeders. These are small motorized vehicles, designed to carry two to eight track workers and their tools out on the tracks

DownTown and Cannonball Charlie from the York Revolution visited First Capital Federal Credit Union on July 25 for a story time. Cannonball Charlie read “How the MoonJar Was Made,” a book about saving, sharing and spending, to the 36 children and adults in attendance. After listening to the story, the children decorated their own moonjars. Information about future story times will be posted on First Capital Federal Credit Union’s Facebook page.

to make repairs and inspect the line. The Stewartstown Railroad has a collection of these motorcars, and they are coupled together and used for the rides. Motorcars were built by a number of manufacturers for a period of approximately 100 years, between the 1890s and the 1990s. Prior to this period, track workers had to use handcars, pumping the handles up and down until they got to their destination. By the time they arrived, the workers were often worn out. Motorized cars helped to alleviate this problem. In the late 1980s, railroads began adding hi-rail gear to pickup trucks. The hi-rail equipment was a set of railroad wheels that could be lowered onto the rails so a pickup could be driven down the line. Motorcars are still used by some railroads, such as the Stewartstown Railroad, for both work crews and passenger excursions. The Stewartstown Railroad is celebrating its 135th birthday, having been chartered in 1884. The line was started by a number of local merchants who wanted to get
