The 50th Greater York CROP Hunger Walk will take place on Sunday, Oct. 13. Walkers and sponsors may preregister at www.crophungerwalk.org/yorkpa. In 1970, York County held what is known as the first official CROP Hunger Walk. The more than 1,200 walkers started at Continental Square in York city and walked to Spring Grove. The Rev. Bill Sowers was the chair of the first walk and is honorary chair of the 50th walk. He is actively involved in organizing and promoting the event alongside the Rev. Patrick Walker, chair of the 50th walk. This year, to celebrate the milestone, Sowers and Milton Leake, who has volunteered for the CROP Walk for more than 20 years, are planning to walk a total of 50 miles via 12 shorter warm-up walks on Mondays and Fridays over the course of the six weeks leading up to the event. Their send-off walk took place on Aug. 30. Members of the community are welcome to join them for their upcoming walks. On Mondays, they will retrace the route of the second CROP Walk from Continental Square in York to Samuel E. Lewis State Park and back to Continental Square. On Fridays, they will re-create the first walk from Continental Square to Spring Grove Middle School. To view starting locations and times, readers may visit https://50thcropwalk.com/warm -up-for-the-50th-crop-walk/. Walker is also planning to travel 50 miles. He will walk the Heritage Rail Trail from John C. Rudy County Park to the Maryland border and back from Wednesday, Oct. 9, through Saturday, Oct. 12. He plans to walk his final few miles on Oct. 13 as part of the CROP Walk. Individuals are invited to consider joining Sowers and Leake’s walks or taking part in one of four shorter walks. Walkers will start at one of four starting points - to the north, south, east or west - and walk to the square, where a celebration will take

place. The four starting points are St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 839 W. Market St.; St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 947 N. George St.; Fourth United Methodist Church, 1067 E. Market St.; and St. Paul Lutheran Church, South George Street and Springettsbury Avenue. Registration will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the four sites, with walkers starting at 2 p.m. Dogs and other pets must be on leashes. The celebration at the Old Courthouse at Center Square will be at 2:30 p.m. WGAL’s Ron Martin, a York native, will serve as master of ceremonies and will give opening words and prayer. He will introduce the mayor of York and other dignitaries in attendance. The program will include music, dance, recognition of CROP Walk volunteers, and a thank you from the York County Food Bank, which is designated to receive funds from the walk. At 3:30 p.m., walkers will begin walking back to their starting point. There is no rain date. In the event of inclement weather, the celebration honoring CROP’s 50th year fighting world hunger will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 29 S. George St., York. This year’s goals are 1,200 walkers and $50,000 raised to fight hunger locally and around the world. A total of 25% percent of the money raised from the Greater York CROP Hunger Walk will remain in York County by supporting the York County Food Bank. The remaining 75% percent will be distributed through Church World Service to combat poverty and hunger nationally and internationally. Since beginning in York, CROP Walks have spread across the country, with more than 800 scheduled this year in the United States. Additional information is available at https://50thcrop walk.com/ or by emailing pwalker@cwsglobal.org. To learn more about York’s milestone event, readers may visit https://50thcropwalk.com.

Recently appointed leaders in the West York Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are (from left) bishop Ryan Mair, first counselor Chris Smith and second counselor Dale Coats. themselves to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with others. While serving as the bishop of a large ward or the branch president of a small ward, the bishop generally continues to pursue his career in the community, or he may be retired. He must be married, and he also must be a high priest in the Melchizedek priesthood. Sometimes the bishop is called the “father of the ward” because he is the individual most closely involved in working with the congregation. The stake president is the immediate priesthood leader over the bishop, and he operates with two counselors and a high council. While the stake president recommends a new bishop, the bishop is approved by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ First Presidency

of Salt Lake City, Utah. A new bishopric is accepted by the common consent of ward members, and the bishop and his counselors are then set apart by the laying on of hands by those priesthood members in authority over them. Many of the bishopric members have prepared themselves for their positions by attending four years of seminary classes as young men and by serving a two-year mission. They generally have studied Scripture daily, have accepted a variety of callings, and have attended church faithfully throughout their years as members of the Church. Other men who have been called to assist the bishop are Ward executive secretary Brian Malcarne; Ward clerk Andy Smith; and Ward assistant clerk for finance Timothy Shetter.

Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York, in partnership with the Susquehanna Valley Theatre Organ Society, will present “Broadway, Big Bands, and More!” featuring organist Ken Double on Sunday, Oct. 6. The concert will take place at 3 p.m. in the Capitol Theatre. Double will play big band and Broadway tunes on the 1927 Mighty Wurlitzer organ. In addition, he will accompany the 1929 short silent film comedy “That’s My Wife,” starring Laurel and Hardy. The theater pipe organ was originally designed to accompany silent films during the silent film era. When talking pictures replaced silent films, many of these theater organs were destroyed. Appell Center has a surviving theater pipe organ in the Capitol Theatre. A former radio and television sportscaster who started taking organ lessons as an 8-year-old in Chicago, Double has enjoyed a second career focused on his love of the music of the theater pipe organ. As a sportscaster, Ken broadcast NBA and major college basketball; NHL, IHL, and AHL hockey; the worldwide broadcast of the Indy 500; and more. Since retiring in 2008, Double has performed concerts on great theater pipe organs around the world. He also helped establish the Long Center

Theatre Organ Society in Lafayette, Ind.; spent 10 years as the president of the American Theatre Organ Society (ATOS); and currently is the director of fundraising for the Historic Organ Restoration Committee, the organization restoring the largest musical instrument in the world, the Midmer-Losh organ at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J. Double performed his first concert in 1978; has 20 recordings to his credit; has toured Australia several times; and is one of the organists at the famed Atlanta Fox Theatre playing “Mighty Mo,” the Moller theater organ heard there since 1929. Double’s theater organ credits also include performing the role of master of ceremonies for more than 20 ATOS annual and regional conventions. The historic Capitol Theatre recently underwent a complete renovation, which included all new seating, a new concessions stand, new and improved restrooms downstairs, and additional accessible seating and restrooms on the main floor. Separate ticket prices have been set for adults and for students. Group ticket pricing is available. Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door the day of the concert. To purchase tickets, readers may visit https://appellcenter.org or call 717-846-1111.

has become a staple for many Lancaster-area residents as they shop for the holidays. Knepper, who resides in Lancaster and works as a nurse in Hershey, read a newspaper article about an alternative gift fair happening in Harrisburg and thought it would be great to bring one to Lancaster. “I just loved what they were doing, because I’ve always been kind of a minimalist, and giving gifts that would also serve a deeper purpose really resonated with me,” Knepper said. This year, the Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Lancaster Alternative Gift Fair is moving to a new location. The 12th annual event is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, in Landis Hall at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. People may visit with representatives of 30 nonprofits that are providing life-changing benefits to people in both local and global contexts. Individuals will have the option of purchasing charitable gift donations to honor loved ones, and each of those gifts will include a greeting card and an explanatory insert about how the donation will sustain and provide for others. Founder Jenn Knepper said that the fair also offers plenty of options for individuals who would rather purchase something tangible to gift those on their holiday shopping list with as well. In addition to the 30 nonprofits, approximately 12 marketplace vendors will sell fair trade items. “We try to emphasize that there’s something for everybody,” explained Knepper. “And if you are going to buy tangible things, make it something that is ethically sourced. People want to make those choices, and the fair brings a lot of options into one place.” The fair serves as a strong community-building event as the nonprofits that participate are able to share their stories and missions with shoppers, building both relationships and

awareness. One of the new participants in this year’s fair will be Bridge, an award-winning cultural exchange startup established by Somalian refugee Mustafa Nuur. “We are a social enterprise company, and we use cultural events to connect people in the community with refugees,” explained Nuur. Bridge, which allows people to purchase inhome dining experiences with local refugee families, offers refugees an opportunity to use their existing skills to make a supplemental income and provides Americans with cross-cultural experiences in their own hometown. Exclusive gift certificates will be available for GTGH attendees to purchase. Another new GTGH participant for 2019 will be AIM to Empower, a nonprofit organization founded by Beth Weaver in 2017 with the intent of creating connection and opportunity through the practice of yoga. “I’ve seen the positive impact (yoga) can have on people, so we want to take yoga to underserved populations,” Weaver said. AIM to Empower has implemented yoga programs in places including Lancaster County Prison, Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center, Refugee Center and Community School at Reynolds, and Lourdeshouse Maternity Home. At GTGH, plenty of food will be available to purchase from local vendors such as Upohar, Reunion Food Truck, Grape Leaf Cafe, and The Lancaster Stroopies Company, so Knepper encourages attendees to come hungry. Festival held at Villanova University, Winter Games held at Hidden Valley Resort, and Summer Games held at State College. He also was part of the 2014 soccer team that competed at Nationals held in New Jersey and helped bring home the gold medal to York County. In addition, he was one of the top fundraisers for York County when he participated in the Polar Plunge held in February at Wrightsville along the Susquehanna River. The 2019 Hall of Fame Award is this highest award given to a Special Olympics athlete. Gable has been the York County Special Olympics tennis coach for seven years.
