www.wyndridge.com and on the Wyndridge Farm Facebook page. Wyndridge Farm has also announced that it now produces fresh cold-pressed cider with the addition of an on-site apple press. The apple press will enable Wyndridge to partner with area orchards, including Peter’s Orchards in Adams County, to produce a wider variety of apples, tailored specifically for unique hard cider needs, including Bittersweet apples, a variety that is not typically found readily available on the East Coast. Wyndridge will produce 3,000 gallons of cider per day, processing 800 bushels of apples per day using an accordion-style press and processing equipment, custom built for a more optimal production speed. The addition of the Wyndridge apple press is intended to increase the quality and flavor of cider blends through hand-selected apple varieties which will be juiced, immediately fermented, and canned at Wyndridge Farm. Wyndridge will also provide custom press operations for cideries, wineries, distilleries, and beer makers entering the cider business in the MidAtlantic region. Tours of the apple pressing operation will be made available to groups.

Future plans include making sparkling nonalcoholic cider. Wyndridge will also be pressing crabapples, peaches, and pears to make different hard cider flavor options and increase the utilization of many different local fruits. Brett Krosse, farm/cider manager, will oversee the production, logistics, and client relations of the apple pressing operation. Krosse, former Brown’s Orchard cider manager, has 20 years of experience in agriculture. His awards include winning first place in the fresh cider category at the 2018 Mid-Atlantic Fruit and Vegetable Convention in Hershey. Scott Topel, head cider maker and operations manager, will work with Krosse to source the apples and produce the blends. Topel won two gold medals in Glintcap two years in a row (2016 and 2017) and has more than 20 years of cider making experience with cider education from Washington State University and Cornell University. Topel is traveling to England in October to continue his education in traditional cider making methods. For more information about Wyndridge Farm, readers may contact 717-244-9900.

This stake youth conference was planned and carried out by the Stake Aaronic Priesthood Young Women Committee under the direction of stake president Conrad Knudson of York. The youths were invited to assist the committee as much as possible in planning the conference. The youths first selected a Gospel theme for the conference. They could choose a Scripture, a quotation from a prophet, or another theme. The theme this year was “Survivor - Overcoming Challenges, Overcoming Fears.” The youths planned activities, such as devotionals, group meetings, learning experiences, sports activities, and service projects that were consistent with the theme. On the first night, participants attended a luau complete with a pig roasted by Philip Sherffy, a Scouting committee member. Open Space Grant Program Posted PECO has announced that applications are being accepted for its Green Region Open Space grant program, which Natural Lands administers. The program, now in its 15th year, awards grants of up to $10,000 to eligible municipalities and recreation authorities within PECO’s service area. The deadline for applications is Thursday, Oct. 31. Over the years, numerous

municipalities, regional recreational authorities, and nonprofits in southeastern Pennsylvania have undertaken a variety of open space projects. PECO has partnered with Natural Lands to provide grants to assist in these efforts. Eligible applicants include municipalities and regional recreational authorities within PECO’s suburban service territory, which includes portions of

Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and York counties. Within the city of Philadelphia, eligible applicants are limited to incorporated nonprofit organizations. The grants are to be used with other funding sources to cover expenses related to open space projects, such as consulting fees, trail construction, land acquisition, habitat improvement, and creating and implementing an

open space plan. To learn more and apply, readers may visit www.natlands.org/greenregion or contact Estelle Wynn Dolan at 610-353-5587, ext. 213, or edolan@natlands.org. Natural Lands has preserved more than 125,000 acres, including 43 nature preserves totaling more than 23,000 acres. feet. Plans call for a new circulation desk, a new center for teenagers, and space for hundreds of new books and resources. New computers will be added for learners and job seekers, and the library will expand broadband access. In addition to the center for teenagers, the children’s library now will have space dedicated for private study and silent reading. The design includes riser seating as well as interactive exhibits. State Rep. Stan Saylor and members of the York County delegation worked with Gov. Tom Wolf to secure $5 million in state capital improvement grants for all three libraries. To draw down these state capital dollars, York County Libraries must raise $5 million in local matching donations. Local residents may visit www.yorklibraries.org to learn more and make a taxdeductible contribution.

If the license allocations for all WMU preferences are sold out, the application will be returned to the hunter. The hunter may apply for another WMU where licenses are available by using a new pink envelope. Nonprofit retailer Re-Source York presented a contribution of $3,620 to Bell Socialization Services at the fourth annual Bell’s Big Bed Race on Aug. 4 at Penn Park. Bethany Slapinski, chair of the marketing committee, represented the Re-Source York board of directors by presenting the check to Bell representatives. York Revolution mascot DownTown attended the event to support the Revolution Rollers bed race team. Donations to and purchases from either of Re-Source York’s two locations - the home décor store on Carlisle Avenue by the York Fairgrounds and the home improvement store on East Ninth Avenue in North York - yield proceeds that are shared quarterly in support of Bell Family Shelter, a program of Bell. The shelter houses approximately 40 people every night, half of whom are children under the age of 12. The contributions from Re-Source York will help to provide shelter, nutritious meals, and supportive guidance from shelter staff that connects families with resources to regain their independence. Keeping usable goods out of the landfill and helping neighbors in need embodies Re-Source York’s mission to inspire the community by being environmentally and socially responsible. The two nonprofit organizations have been partnered since 2002, with Re-Source York also offering vocational training and job placement services for Bell service users, allowing them to gain experience working in retail. Bell Socialization Services provides housing and living skills supports to individuals living with mental illness, people with intellectual disabilities, and families experiencing homelessness. Since 1966, Bell programs have provided an environment of support and empowerment to help people throughout the greater York/Hanover area improve their quality of living.

1. More of your money will stay in your local economy.

6. You conserve your tax dollars.

For every $100 spent at a local business, $68 will stay in the community. When you spend the same at a national chain, only $43 stays in the community.

Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify your community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested where they belong - in your community!

2. You embrace what makes your community unique.

7. You help the environment.

Your community has its own unique qualities that local businesses showcase. Chains can’t do that.

3. You create local jobs.

Buying from local businesses conserves energy and resources - less fuel for transportation and less packaging

8. You create more choice.

4. You nurture community.

Local shops sell what they know you like. They also carry more unique items based on community preference.

9. You take advantage of their expertise.

Local shop owners know you. And you know them. Local businesses support local causes at more than twice the rate of national chains.

Local business owners are passionate about what they do, and they want to provide you with a great product or service because they know you.

“(The Europeans who first lived in this area) made practically everything they needed (from red clay): bedpans, roach traps, jugs‌â€? said Bob Hughes, potter-in-residence at Conestoga Area Historical Society (CAHS), 51 Kendig Road, Conestoga. In his shop, located with other craftspersons’ shops on the ground floor of the CAHS main building, Bob has those very items on display. Because some of Lancaster County’s soils are rich in red clay, which can be easily fired, redware pottery was common among the Europeans who first moved into the area. “When I find roach traps, they usually smell like molasses,â€? Bob said, holding a small, conical vessel - almost like an old-fashioned beehive - in his hand. Roaches seeking molasses or honey with which the trap was baited would

crawl in and be stuck. The potter’s shop was reorganized this year, and Bob stocked the shelves with examples from his collection. There are shelves of crocks, jugs, vases, and inkwells, and there are even two shelves full of bundt pans and similar ring-shaped baking dishes. “I love the way everybody solved their problems a different way, Bob said, commenting on the variations in design. In contrast to the practical items, Bob also has a shelf of ring vases that are adaptations of designs spotted in places like the Winterthur Museum in Delaware. “I’ve turned them into story pots, Bob said. Keep your eyes on the night sky, and you just might catch a glimpse of a friendly, flying witch making her way to the Lebanon Valley Expo Center to attend the Witches Fly North Antique and Artisan Show on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 4 and 5, in Lebanon, Pa. For 13 years, this event has showcased the best in early antiques, vintage wares, primitives, industrial, salvage and artistically created jewelry, clothing and more. It gets better with each passing year, and Witches Fly North 2019 is sure to please all attendees again. This fall show is hosted by Miss Morgan’s Milkweed Antiques. Owners Diane Gibble and Troy Tranquillo have watched this event grow from a small backyard casual event to a bustling, busy venue full of vendors and shoppers sporting witch hats and capes. But don’t let the hat fool you, it’s all in fun and a great way to bring both vendors and shoppers together for a busy two days of selling and picking. The show has grown in leaps and bounds each year, creating the need for bigger and better venues. If you thought last year’s event held at the Tulpehocken Manor couldn’t be better, think again. The Lebanon Valley Expo Center won’t disappoint, with plenty of climate-controlled space indoors, as well as covered, open air space outside. Since the show must go on, rain or shine, this venue will keep vendors and customers comfortable and provide plenty of parking. Although every talented vendor contributes to the spirited atmosphere of the show, hosts Gibble and Tranquillo are excited to introduce several new vendors this year. Among them are Sue Whitney, the founder and creative genius behind Junkmarket. Founded in 2000, Junkmarket has become the national leader in the “rustoration industry. Whitney is also the author of “Junk Beautiful and several other inspiring books and has been featured on the Hallmark Channel’s “Home and Family Show, “The

YWCA York and York College of Pennsylvania are collaborating to benefit the YWCA’s Quantum Opportunities Program (QOP) and to engage York College students and staff in the program’s efforts. QOP employs an intensive academic support model for economically disadvantaged high school students who reside in the city of York and encourages youths to develop personally and participate in community service initiatives. The program focuses on grade improvement, high school graduation, and advancement in postsecondary education or training. Nearly 100 percent of QOP graduates have enrolled in college over the past 10 years. York College of Pennsylvania’s Center for Community Engagement (CCE), 59 E. Market St., York, will be the new home for the QOP after-school program. Students will meet at the CCE Mondays
