York County Libraries and PeoplesBank will celebrate first-grade readers from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 14, during the annual Grade One At the Library (GOAL) celebration. The online event will feature GOAL author Anthony Fredericks and ZooAmerica. This is the first year for Fredericks as the designated GOAL author. Children’s authors Tedd Arnold, Will Hillenbrand, Peter Catalanotto, and Lindsay Barrett Georg have preceded him in this role. Each featured
author is involved for three years, coming to York to inspire children to read, draw, and learn from the world around them. Fredericks is professor emeritus of education at York College of Pennsylvania where he taught both teacher education and writing courses. He is the author of more than 160 books. His award-winning children’s books include “Desert Night, Desert Day,” “A is for Anaconda: A Rainforest Alphabet,” and “Tall Tall Tree.”
York County Libraries and PeoplesBank started the GOAL program in 2008 to get a library card in the hands of every first-grader in York County. The initiative encourages children and their parents to visit the library to discover the array of books, programs, and resources available. The family-friendly GOAL celebration is free to attend and is open to the public. Interested individuals can register for the program on the Event Calendar at www.yorklibraries.org.

Get Away To Jim Thorpe BY CARA O’DONNELL FOR WHERE & WHEN PENNSYLVANIA
With a storied past, the quaint charms of a European village and the outdoor recreation of a mountain sports destination, the town of Jim Thorpe is a must-see town tucked into the Pocono Mountains. Jim Thorpe is a destination rich with history and is often called the “Switzerland of America” because of its scenic views. Its unique Victorian architecture pays homage to its roots of coal mining and industrialism, which today house unique shops and eateries, museums and galleries and popular entertainment venues. With its nostalgic feel coupled with unique history and exciting recreation, Jim Thorpe is a favorite for weekend getaways for many types of travelers. But to truly understand Jim Thorpe’s appeal, one must first look at its roots. Originally
named Mauch Chunk, the town was pivotal to America’s industrial development as a main transport area for coal mining. The coal mined throughout what’s now known as the Pocono Mountains was transported from Mauch Chunk to Eastern markets via the Lehigh River, which helped to build the local economy and establish the community as an independent leader in a growing industrial market. Many of the transportation systems of the era, including canals, locks, dams and early gravity railroads, are still a strong part of the community’s culture today. The focus on coal and modern transportation methods brought early 19th-century entrepreneurs to the area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by trade. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build
and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways to use technology to transport the region’s rich coal resources. In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. Known as the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, the line eventually extended into the Susquehanna Valley and New York state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the region’s industrial reach even farther and establishing Mauch Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and entertainment.
A carriage ride through the streets of Jim Thorpe is a great way to see the quaint shops and beautiful architecture.
Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion, a National Historic Landmark that overlooks the Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk National Historic Dis-
trict and that remains much like it did when first constructed in 1861 as a memorial to Packer and his accomplishments. Visitors can learn more about Packer’s successes as a businessman and his work as a philanthropist through guided tours held throughout the day at the 17-room Italianate villa. If you want to experience a little of what it was really like to live as a Packer you can stay at the Harry Packer Mansion Inn, just down the street from the Asa Packer Mansion. Harry Packer, the elder Packer’s son, lived in the Victorian mansion, complete with 15-foot ceilings, marble fireplaces and gilded mirrors reflecting the elegance of the Victorian age. Guests can enjoy period furnishings and artwork at the inn and even take part in special wine tastings or murder mystery weekends, a nod to the fact that the home was the inspiration for Walt Disney World’s “Haunted Mansion.” Take a self-guided walking or Segway tour to learn more about some of the historic
downtown. Visit the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center to learn more about the town’s history, where there’s even a working model of the Switchback Railroad, one of the very earliest in the region. Any tour of the village must include Historic Stone Row, a series of stone row houses Asa Packer built for his engineers and foremen of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. You’ll also find Victorian buildings along Broadway now housing cute shops offering everything from handmade soaps and pottery to wine tasting rooms, antiques and art galleries. Don’t miss Somersault Letterpress, a vintage letterpress and creative studio, or Rainbow’s End, a quaint corner candy shop sure to amaze kids (and kids at heart) Outdoors enthusiasts can enjoy an entirely different aspect of Jim Thorpe, no matter what the season. After all, the many railways and waterways of the area’s storied past make for excellent outdoor See Jim Thorpe pg 5

recreation today. Take a 9-mile downhill bike trip on the Switchback Trail to the picturesque Broadway in downtown Jim Thorpe. Bike or hike through the Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail for some truly spectacular scenery, or visit any of the numerous local trailheads accessible from town. Take to the water for a challenging whitewater rafting ride or take a scenic kayak paddle through the gorge and surrounding waterways. Several outfitters are available to arrange tours to explore the region’s waters. Naturalists may want to spend a relaxing afternoon at the Bear Mountain Butterfly Sanctuary.
Romantic small-town charm, entrepreneurship, a legendary past and scenic vistas all make their home in the Pocono Mountains’ Jim Thorpe. Discover this unique spot for a weekend getaway in the Switzerland of America. Visit whereandwhen.com/ jim-thorpe for more on Jim Thorpe, including the Jail House Museum, which is said to be haunted by the Ghosts of the Molly Maguires. Note: Some of the attractions mentioned in the article may be closed for the season or have altered hours due to COVID-19. Please check websites for days and hours of operation.
The Asa Packer Mansion stands today as it did when the last member of the Packer family lived there. Due to COVID-19, tours have been temporarily suspended until 2021.

Recently, the York County Community Foundation’s (YCCF) Embracing Aging initiative announced a new movement in York County to disrupt negative thinking on aging. YCCF seeks to remind the community that older people have accumulated years of life lessons and offer significant skills, talents, education, and resources that enhance the community. The new initiative encourages people to care about and respect everyone, regardless of age. YCCF is working with community partners to create an age-friendly York County. The Embracing Aging initiative includes free resources for employers, organizations, civic clubs, agencies, and individuals to increase awareness about ageism and how to make an impact on ageism in the county. A video designed to reframe ageist statements is available as well as an assessment for people to identify their own age bias. To access these resources and learn more about the initiative, readers may visit www.embracing aging.org.

Work-From-Home Pain? Physical Therapy Might Help BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
At the intake appointment for a recurring issue, I commented offhand to my physical therapist (PT) that one of my shoulders was feeling sore. I joked that the reason could be due to dressing up to leave the house more often after several months of living in pajamas during the shutdown. It turns out that my hypothesis was not so farfetched. “I’m seeing a lot more of those issues,” said CPRS Granite Run PT Olivia Bolen. “I’m seeing increases in low back and neck pain, likely due to decreased overall activity levels because people are out of their usual routine, and (have) poor work setups at home. Sometimes arthritic flare-ups can occur.” Office workers, in particular, may be experiencing pain because after years of regularly sitting at workstations designed for their specific tasks, they suddenly had to make do with a coffee table and a kitchen chair, a bed and stacks of pillows, or even just a seat on the floor with a wall
for back support. For the first week or two after the March shutdown, the makeshift seating might have been fine, but with remote work continuing indefinitely, the uncomfortable seating has taken its toll on some individuals. To stave off issues, Bolen recommends individuals use desks where they can rest their forearms comfortably at 90-degree angles to decrease the likelihood of lifting their shoulders in a shrug when typing. Also, computer monitors should be at eye level so users do not have to flex or extend their necks for long periods of time. “This will help mitigate tightness and restriction through the shoulder/neck region,” Bolen said. “These tips can also be applied to the low back. Sitting in a supportive chair that allows you to keep both feet on the floor will reduce low back stress as well as fight the urge to lean forward.” If individuals do not have the space or the finances to create an ergonomic workstation at home, they can still participate in positive work
habits like taking regular breaks to stand up and move. “It is healthy for our joints to be exposed to compressive forces when walking because it helps lubricate the joints, and when we sit for long periods of time, we lose out on that benefit,” Bolen said. “Along with that concept, it is super important to stay hydrated.” It is time to seek physical therapy if discomfort impacts the way a person performs their usual activities or they are living with chronic, nagging issues, Bolen suggested. If getting dressed, sitting, or walking causes pain, a PT can help. PTs are medical professionals who are licensed to evaluate and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal and neurological issues in a variety of settings. Many Pennsylvania insurance companies, Medicare excluded, allow clients to see PTs directly without referrals from primary care physicians. Each state has its own laws regarding direct access, Bolen said. There are many clinic
options in the area, so selecting a PT often comes down to personality. “Get someone that listens to you and that you can have a conversation with. You will see your PT often, so it is good for you to feel comfortable talking to them,” Bolen said, adding a suggestion to look for a PT who will treat the whole client, not just an isolated body part. “ We know now that many issues that people come to see us for are multifactorial, and you need a PT that can evaluate and address all your impairments appropriately.” When finding a PT, it may help clients to ask questions such as how long an evaluation typically takes and who will provide care during treatment. Many PTs work with physical therapy assistants (PTAs), and they may have PT and PTA students completing practicums as well. “Different clinics have different protocols they use,” Bolen explained. PT clinics must follow CDC guidelines regarding COVID19 mitigation. Everyone in a
