WGAL 8 announced recently that longtime anchor Ron Martin will retire on Wednesday, Nov. 25, after more than 37 years with the news station. Martin has been a member of the WGAL News 8 team since 1983. He rose through the ranks to become the station’s main weeknight news anchor in 2000. Martin currently anchors WGAL News 8 at 5 p.m., the Emmy awardwinning WGAL News 8 at 6 p.m., and WGAL News 8 at 11 p.m. Martin led WGAL’s coverage of some of the biggest stories in the station’s history, including the Hanover race riots, the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and, most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. This November, WGAL News 8 will look back at the most memorable moments from Martin’s career at the station. These news stories will air during the news at 5 p.m. The celebration will culminate with Martin’s final broadcast on Nov. 25. “WGAL was my dream job and I’ve enjoyed every one of the 37 years I’ve been here, said Martin, “but as an anchorman, you work a lot of nights and now it’s time for
Harlacker-Schroeder
me to spend more time with my family. Martin is a York native who began his career in broadcast journalism as a desk assistant at NBC News in Washington, D.C. After graduating from Howard University with a Bachelor of Arts in communications, he returned home to the Susquehanna Valley to work as a reporter and news announcer at WSBA radio in York. Martin joined WGAL 8 and the NewsCenter 8 team in 1983. In 1985, he was named weekend news anchor. Two years later, Martin was named a weeknight news anchor on WGAL. Among the many awards he has received during his career in broadcast journalism, Martin is a six-time Emmy award winner. He has also been honored for his many community service contributions in the central Pennsylvania region. His efforts in this area have been recognized by scores of organizations, including the state of Pennsylvania, the cities of York and Harrisburg, the Harrisburg and York chapters of the NAACP, the school districts of York and Harrisburg, and the Lancaster Urban League. It’s been nearly 175 years since they put him in the ground. His family and friends are gone. The last people to actually know him have been gone for more than a century. All we know is hearsay at best. All we know for sure is his name or part of it - and the dates of his arrival on and departure from Earth spelled out in hard-to-read, weathered letters on the broken piece of stone that marks his eternity. Who cares? We all should -
especially those who inhabit the same area that George Lieberknecht called home before his demise in 1846. Fortunately for Lieberknecht and others who lived around Canadochly Lutheran Church in the 18th and 19th centuries, four current members of that church have spent a year as unofficial cemetery conservators. Jim Anspach of Columbia, Gene Smeltzer of Lower Windsor Township, Bill Dehoff of Windsor, and Bruce Herbst of East Prospect have been getting plenty of exercise but not much recognition

stones mark the resting places of Revolutionary War soldiers. Those markers were decorated with American flags and bronze medallions from the American Legion and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). “We’ve reset more than 30 stones,” said Anspach, who has helped with similar cemetery restoration efforts at Mount Bethel Cemetery in Columbia. “The place looks better and better. We hope to get to the old slate markers in the spring.” George Lieberknecht’s headstone gives testimony to his German roots, as its epitaph is written in German: “Hier Ruhen Die Gebeine Von George Liebernecht. Geb 3 Feb 1766 Starbolen 12 Sept 1846.” Translation: “Here rest the bones of George Liebernecht, Born Feb. 3, 1799, Died Sept. 12, 1846.” Who would have imagined that four good men would restore that old marker in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic?

as they work to restore the headstones in a small graveyard on the East Prospect Road next to the church’s event hall. The centuries have been hard on the stones, especially the marble ones eroded by years of rain that has slowly dissolved the letters carved on the surface. Trees have fallen, and branches have broken some stones, so these men do their best to piece them back together. Few stones are plumb, so they dig holes to reset the stones and point them skyward. Most of the stones in the old section next to the event hall are from the 1800s, but some, the ones closer to the road, date to the 1700s. Some of these monuments stood near Canadochly Lutheran during our nation’s early years, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. They were here when canal boats traveled the creeks and rivers and when wagon trains carried families across the country to settle the West. At least four of the

YCRRC tours learn how York County trash is converted to electricity while being reduced in volume by 90% to a much smaller amount of ash. HARC facility tours highlight how the YCSWA turned a now-closed landfill into 200 acres of space which hosts a wildlife habitat and recreation complex. Pennsylvania and Maryland that provide trees, shrubs, and materials are guaranteed revenue through this forward contracting, and the partnership will receive the variety, quantity and quality of trees, shrubs, and materials it needs to continue its drive to plant 10 million trees in Pennsylvania by the end of 2025. Since 2018, cumulative efforts by CBF, the partnership and others across Pennsylvania have planted roughly more than 1.74 million trees. The partnership is made up of 147 national, regional, state, and local partners. CBF issued requests for proposals (RFP) and awarded bids to seven companies for a total of 210,000 trees, stakes, and shelters for 2021. RFPs for trees have been issued for single years since 2018, but contracting two years ahead to 2022 is unique for CBF. Four companies were awarded future contracts for a total of 500,000 trees for 2022. Those companies are Aquatic Resource Restoration Company in York County, Musser Forests in Indiana County, Octoraro Native Plant Nursery in Lancaster County, and American Native Plants in Baltimore County, Md. All four companies were also among the seven that received contracts for 2021. Funds provided through the contracts will help some of the companies expand their operations. CBF noted that the security of its forward contracting made the latest RFPs attractive to a conservative industry still affected by the housing crisis of 2008 when there was little need for nursery stock and services. Geisinger Health Plan (GHP) has announced new benefits for its 2021 Medicare Advantage plans, including virtual visits with primary care physicians and set monthly copays for insulin. Medicare’s annual enrollment period began on Oct. 15 and will run through Monday, Dec. 7. During this time, Medicare beneficiaries can switch or make changes to their current coverage for 2021. Geisinger Gold Medicare Advantage plans are available in 44 counties in Pennsylvania, and they include a wide range of cost saving features and wellness programs not available with original Medicare, such as prescription drug coverage and fitness, dental, hearing, and vision benefits. Among the new benefits
for 2021 are virtual visits with primary care physicians and an insulin savings program that ensures members will pay no more than a set fee per month on select insulin products. All Geisinger Gold Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plans also include vaccines covered at no cost; prescription drug copays as low as no cost; additional savings through Geisinger’s mailorder pharmacy; access to more than 29,000 doctors and 100 hospitals across Pennsylvania; and health management programs for chronic or complex conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart failure, and cancer. For more information, readers may visit http://go.geisinger.org/gold or call 855-605-1517.
Celebration Goes Virtual Crispus Attucks York will host its 37th annual Cultural Thanksgiving Celebration and Rising STARS Awards on Monday, Nov. 23. The Rising STARS Awards honor community members who have positively impacted the lives of youths in York’s community. The Rising STARS staff and participants nominated several individuals and/or companies to receive an award. The nominees are Richard Craighead, Christine Feliciano, Tzipporah Goins, Anna Mercado, Arlette Morales, Laquinn Thompson, and Marshalls /TJX Foundation.
The event will take place virtually via Zoom and will be streamed live via Crispus Attucks York’s Facebook page. The event will begin at 5 p.m. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, free grab-and-go dinners will be available for members of the community to enjoy at home. The dinners will be available for pickup at Crispus Attucks York, 605 S. Duke St., York, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 23. Individuals interested in reserving a dinner for pickup may contact Phil Drayden at 717848-3610, ext. 279, by Thursday, Nov. 19.
CBF from pg 8 The economic benefits of forward contracting also extend to contractors that will do the planting work and maintain the planting sites, said CBF’s Brenda Sieglitz, who manages the partnership. Sieglitz added that the new contracts will also increase the diversity of native trees for planting, as CBF has ordered a mix of species. As part of its efforts to plant a variety of trees, CBF responded to input from statewide organizations and is asking for trees that are hard to find. CBF launched the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership in 2018, focused on Pennsylvania’s Clean Water Blueprint goal of planting 95,000 acres of forested buffers by the end of 2025. Amid COVID-19 restrictions, 84,000 of 95,000 trees distributed for spring planting in 2020 went into the ground. The remaining 11,000 trees are being kept in partner greenhouses and will
grow into larger stock for future plantings. For fall plantings, about 47,000 trees were scheduled to be delivered in September to pickup points. Due to spring cancellations, the fall 2020 number of trees is more than double what was planted in the fall of 2019. Adding 10 million new trees alongside streams, streets, and other priority landscapes in Pennsylvania’s portion of the bay watershed would accelerate the Keystone State as much as twothirds toward the 95,000-acre target, according to CBF. Trees are among the most cost-effective tools for cleaning and protecting waterways by filtering and absorbing polluted runoff, stabilizing streambanks, and improving soil quality. Placed in parks, municipal properties, and other urban and suburban settings, trees absorb and clean stormwater, reduce flooding, and help restore abandoned mine land.
YCCF Initiative To Address Ageism Recently, the York County Community Foundation’s (YCCF) Embracing Aging initiative announced a new movement in York County to disrupt negative thinking on aging. YCCF seeks to remind the community that older people have accumulated years of life lessons and offer significant skills, talents, education, and resources that enhance the community. The new initiative encourages people to care about and respect everyone, regardless of age. YCCF is working with
community partners to create an age-friendly York County. The Embracing Aging initiative includes free resources for employers, organizations, civic clubs, agencies, and individuals to increase awareness about ageism and how to make an impact on ageism in the county. A video designed to reframe ageist statements is available as well as an assessment for people to identify their own age bias. To access these resources and learn more about the initiative, readers may visit www.embracingaging.org.

Habecker To Lead Diakon named chief operating officer at the end of 2012, acquiring the chief financial officer role in the spring of 2014. As chief operating and financial officer, Habecker has led or worked on numerous initiatives focused on strengthening the services of the Diakon family of organizations, now more than 150 years old. Among those, he helped to create a strategic plan focused on enhancing quality outcomes across the organization, while also improving financial sustainability and efficiency, and he established a
pharmacy business, during which he helped to complete five acquisitions and three de novo start-up pharmacies. Prior to that, he held successive roles as director of finance, assistant controller and corporate controller for Presbyterian Senior Living in Dillsburg. He began his career in the Harrisburg office of Ernst & Young, an international accounting and auditing firm. A graduate of Elizabethtown College with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, Habecker received a 2006 Central Penn Business Journal Forty Under 40 Award. This annual award recognizes 40 regional business leaders for their commitment to business growth, professional excellence and their communities. Habecker will be Diakon’s third president/CEO. Founded in 2000 as the result of the affiliation and later merger of Tressler Lutheran Services, based in the Harrisburg region, and Lutheran Services Northeast, headquartered in Berks County, Diakon was initially led by the Rev. Dr. Daun E. McKee, whom Pile succeeded.

The Diakon board of directors has named Scott D. Habecker of Hummelstown as Diakon’s next president/CEO, effective Friday, Jan. 1, 2021. Currently chief operating officer and chief financial officer, Habecker will succeed Mark T. Pile, who will retire on Thursday, Dec. 31. A Certified Public Accountant and Chartered Global Management Accountant, Habecker joined the organization in mid-2009 as vice president for planning and business development. He was
leadership team with broad capabilities and expertise to execute that strategic plan and its initiatives. Habecker achieved improvements in senior living cash flows of nearly $10 million annually during a fiveyear period while improving overall quality measurements on the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ 5-Star system. Habecker completed numerous financing transactions, and he led efforts to determine and evaluate potential programmatic acquisitions and divestitures. Under Habecker’s leadership, Diakon completed significant renovations and expansion projects across various senior living campuses. He also helped to lead the 2014 creation of Diakon Child, Family & Community Ministries, a sister organization to Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries, offering services ranging from adoption and foster care to counseling and programming for adjudicated youths. Before joining Diakon, Habecker spent nine years as chief financial officer for a multi-state, long-term care

SU2C Urges Public To Get Screenings Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) announced a new campaign titled “Make the Healthy Call” in collaboration with digital health company Rally Health Inc. The campaign encourages individuals to make healthy choices to reduce their risk of developing cancer. Cancer is not taking a time out during the COVID-19 pandemic, so continuing to maintain one’s health is an important call people can make. The campaign highlights everyday ways to reduce cancer risk and encourages people to take a pledge to get screened for cancer. To learn more, readers may visit www.takea healthystand.org. Cancer screenings can help identify a cancer diagnosis early, before symptoms appear, which can save lives. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in many cancer screenings being put on hold to conserve essential medical resources and to lower the risk of spreading the COVID-19 virus. As stay-at-home orders start to relax in many parts of the country, medical centers have begun providing routine cancer screenings again. Rally Health Inc. and Stand Up To Cancer acknowledge that, due to the pandemic, some screenings may not be safe for everyone right now. People should consult their doctor about which of these recommended screenings are right for them at this time. For additional resources, readers may visit www.standupto cancer.org/COVID19.

Online Watershed Education Program Posted The Chesapeake Bay Foundation launched CBF Online Watershed Learning (CBF OWL), a new education program designed to bring CBF’s expert environmental educators live into online classrooms. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began in the spring, CBF’s educators have been working to transform the lessons they typically deliver to students on boats, canoes, and hiking trails for students learning remotely.
CBF OWL achieves this goal by providing schools with a team of educators who lead an online and interactive 45minute lesson about a Chesapeake Bay environmental subject. Teachers and administrators can choose from topics such as Chesapeake Bay ecosystems, connections between land and water, forests, and oysters. The first live OWL lessons began in classrooms throughout the Chesapeake
Bay watershed on Oct. 5. When a teacher signs up for an OWL class, a CBF educator will review the lesson in advance with the teacher and introduce him or her to CBF’s Learn Outside, Learn at Home online resources. Learn Outside, Learn at Home is a new, free library of online videos and investigations created by CBF to encourage students to examine environmental issues in their neighborhoods and
throughout the Chesapeake Bay’s watershed. Teachers or administrators interested in bringing a CBF program to their online classrooms can reserve a date and time at www.cbf.org. There is a fee per reservation, and fee waivers are available for schools that qualify, which includes Title 1 or FARM schools. CBF uses the registration fees to support the organization’s education program.
