The story of the birth of Jesus will come to life from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, when Susquehanna Grace Community Church (SGCC), 6694 Sunrise Ave., Wrightsville, invites the public to travel on the Road to Bethlehem..
The church has been presenting the drive-through Nativity for decades, said Nikki Sandman, a member of the church outreach team. “The young families of SGCC over 40 years ago wanted to have a Christmas event for their children and families of the community that cele-

Susquehanna Grace Community Church invites the public to travel the Road to Bethlehem at a drivethrough Nativity on Saturday, Dec. 12.
“The live Nativity is a unique way to bring the Bible to life and captures the attention of all who drive through. This year, Road to Bethlehem gives families the opportunity to make Christmas memories without getting out of the car.” In past years, the event included some indoor activities, but that has changed this year. “This year, in respect of public health and safety, we are hosting the live Nativity as a drive-through-only event, with no indoor entertainment,” Sandman stated. “It’s still a great night to spend with your family. We encourage families to pack their car with good snacks, warm blankets and cameras. This is a night where the ‘no contact’ of the land can’t outshine the connection to the Lord Jesus.” For more information on the event, readers may visit SGCC’s Facebook page, www.facebook .com/contagiouschurch.sgcc or follow the church on Instagram at https://instagram.com /contagiouschurch_sgcc.

brated the true meaning of Christmas,” she explained. Visitors to Road to Bethlehem can expect a fun, familyfriendly way to celebrate the Christmas holiday. “The Nativity includes 11 scenes with over 30 actors and live animals depicting the journey to Bethlehem and the birth of Jesus,” Sandman stated. “Actors are in full costume, and the live animals add an amazing feel to the night. The driveway is lined with luminarias, and visitors can listen in their cars to our radio station playing a variety of Christmas songs.” According to Sandman, the church continues to offer the event for one reason: Love. “(It’s about) our love for Jesus Christ,” she stated, “and our love for the community.” The event is free, but food and monetary donations will be accepted for Hearts for Hunger, a food pantry serving Red Lion and surrounding areas. “Road to Bethlehem is an event that reminds families of the true meaning of Christmas,” Sandman said.
More than 30 actors will portray 11 scenes about the birth of Jesus on Road to Bethlehem at Susquehanna Grace Community Church.

Retired physician Dr. Donald E. Myers of Red Lion made a $5 million gift to York College of Pennsylvania (YCP) in memory of his late wife to name the Dr. Donald E. and Lois J. Myers School of Nursing and Health Professions. A 1951 graduate of York Junior College (YJC), the predecessor of York College of Pennsylvania, Myers said the gift allowed him to recognize the college’s role as a stepping stone to his 40-plus-year career as a physician in York and also to honor his wife’s memory. The gift will provide a transformational opportunity for the School of Nursing and Health Professions to develop new programs in the health sciences, such as occupational therapy. YCP has been planning to add this program and others for several years but did not have the right funding until the Myers family stepped in with its gift. Senior Community Takes Part In Alzheimer’s Walk Residents and staff members at Senior Commons at Powder Mill recently participated in the annual Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, known as the world’s largest fundraiser for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. This year’s walk, held on Oct. 24, was slightly different from previous years, which typically attracts hundreds of people from communities all over York County to John C. Rudy Park. Due to COVID-19 restrictions on large in-person gatherings and for safety
reasons, the 2020 walk had participants walking on sidewalks, tracks and trails in their communities. The Senior Commons team hit the hallways and walking paths around the senior community, located at 1775 Powder Mill Road, York. As of Oct. 30, the Senior Commons team had raised more than $1,600. Home and business owners have many choices when it comes to holiday decorating, ranging from traditional to trendy and even off-beat. Neil Brenneman of Christmas Decor of Lancaster in Dallastown says that whatever decorating scheme is preferred, the most important idea to keep in mind is cohesiveness. Each component of outdoor decorating contributes to the overall effect of the holiday display. When shopping for outdoor décor, homeowners should always consider how each new piece is going to work with what they already own. Brenneman offers some suggestions to help refresh any outdoor display. Oversized pieces like 3-D snowflakes, stars, or deer figures create a focal point and can add impact and interest to the yard display. Colored bulbs should be used in one or two places - a roofline or a single, showpiece tree or shrub, for example - to create subtle depth in a traditional cool white light display. People are encouraged to get creative and personalize their display with natural materials like pinecones, holly branches, twigs, and other items with bark-like textures. Readers may contact Brenneman at 717-947-0026 or christmasdecoroflancaster@ gmail.com. Readers may also learn more at www.christmas decor.net.
YCL Honors Young Readers “Screen Time-Out” York County Libraries (YCL) recognized 192 children and their families during the second annual 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Celebration. According to YCL youth services director Paula Gilbert, the children and their families achieved the goal of reading 1,000 books during the program’s second year from July 1, 2019, to Sept. 1, 2020. All totaled, this group read 199,228 books. YCL launched the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program in October 2018. The early childhood initiative is an offshoot of a national program, and YCL put its own spin on the program to encourage York County families to read with their young children. Since the program’s inception at YCL, participating children and their parents, grandparents and caregivers have collectively read 502,741 books. During the ceremony, York County president commissioner Julie Wheeler congratulated the children and their families for the accomplishment of reading 1,000 books. Returning to celebrate this year’s 1000 Books achievers was children’s author Kelly Starling Lyons. The 2020 Caldecott Honor recipient was
part of YCL’s inaugural celebration in 2019. She is the author of 17 books and has also won a Coretta Scott King Award for her work. Children from the day they are born to the day they start kindergarten can participate in the program. All that is needed to participate is a free YCL card. All YCL locations participate in the program, and registration is open yearround. The program is free for all participants due to the support of Stock & Leader and C&S Wholesale Grocers. Children who reach the 1,000-book goal over the next several months will be honored during the next celebration in late summer 2021. Along the way, families are encouraged to visit the library to pick up books to read at home and to watch the many digital story times and online programs available at w w w. y o r k l i b r a r i e s . o r g . According to Gilbert, a special midway celebration will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2021. This year’s event included authors and family-friendly activities. Plans are underway for 2021 and details are forthcoming. To learn more about YCL, readers may visit www.york libraries.org.

Prevent Blindness, a volunteer eye health organization, recently launched a new awareness campaign designed to help reduce the effects of digital eye strain. With many people spending more time viewing digital screens during the pandemic, the new “Screen Time-Out” program is a series of social media graphics reminding consumers to give their eyes a break. Staring at screens for long periods of time can cause eye
strain. Prevent Blindness encourages people to take a screen timeout every 20 minutes and give their eyes a break. Graphics for the campaign will run on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. A new webpage has also been created to provide consumers with information on digital eye strain, blue light, and more related to helping to protect one’s vision at http://prevent blindness.org/screen-time-out.

more than 1.74 million trees. The partnership is made up of 147 national, regional, state, and local partners. CBF issued requests for proposals (RFP) and awarded bids to seven companies for a total of 210,000 trees, stakes, and shelters for 2021. RFPs for trees have been issued for single years since 2018, but contracting two years ahead to 2022 is unique for CBF. Four companies were awarded future contracts for a total of 500,000 trees for 2022. Those companies are Aquatic Resource Restoration Company in York County, Musser Forests in Indiana County, Octoraro Native Plant Nursery in Lancaster County, and American Native Plants in Baltimore County, Md. All four companies were also among the seven that received contracts for 2021. Funds provided through the contracts will help some of the companies expand their operations. CBF noted that the security
ATTENTION MEDICARE BENEFICIARIES
of its forward contracting made the latest RFPs attractive to a conservative industry still affected by the housing crisis of 2008 when there was little need for nursery stock and services. The economic benefits of forward contracting also extend to contractors that will do the planting work and maintain the planting sites, said CBF’s Brenda Sieglitz, who manages the partnership. Sieglitz added that the new contracts will also increase the diversity of native trees for planting, as CBF has ordered a mix of species. As part of its efforts to plant a variety of trees, CBF responded to input from statewide organizations and is asking for trees that are hard to find. CBF launched the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership in 2018, focused on Pennsylvania’s Clean Water Blueprint goal of planting 95,000 acres of forested buffers by the end of 2025. Amid COVID-19 restrictions, 84,000 of 95,000 trees distributed for spring planting in 2020 went into the
ground. The remaining 11,000 trees are being kept in partner greenhouses and will grow into larger stock for future plantings. For fall plantings, about 47,000 trees were scheduled to be delivered in September to pickup points. Due to spring cancellations, the fall 2020 number of trees is more than double what was planted in the fall of 2019. Adding 10 million new trees alongside streams, streets, and other priority landscapes in Pennsylvania’s portion of the bay watershed would accelerate the Keystone State as much as two-thirds toward the 95,000-acre target, according to CBF. Trees are among the most cost-effective tools for cleaning and protecting waterways by filtering and absorbing polluted runoff, stabilizing streambanks, and improving soil quality. Placed in parks, municipal properties, and other urban and suburban settings, trees absorb and clean stormwater, reduce flooding, and help restore abandoned mine land.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) has stepped up its efforts to ensure that it will be able to plant millions of trees in the coming years. The efforts also benefit local businesses and streamside buffers in Pennsylvania. CBF, which coordinates the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership, is spending approximately $2.6 million for 710,000 trees, shelters, and stakes to supply plantings through 2022. Growers and related businesses in Pennsylvania and Maryland that provide trees, shrubs, and materials are guaranteed revenue through this forward contracting, and the partnership will receive the variety, quantity and quality of trees, shrubs, and materials it needs to continue its drive to plant 10 million trees in Pennsylvania by the end of 2025. Since 2018, cumulative efforts by CBF, the partnership and others across Pennsylvania have planted roughly

Four Good Men With Shovels
Canadochly Lutheran Church members (from left) Bill Dehoff, Bruce Herbst, Gene Smeltzer, and Jim Anspach reset centuries-old gravestones in Canadochly Cemetery in York. BY GENE SCHENCK
It’s been nearly 175 years since they put him in the ground. His family and friends are gone. The last people to actually know him have been gone for more than a century. All we know is hearsay at best. All we know for sure is his name or part of it - and the dates of his arrival on and departure from Earth spelled out in hard-to-read, weathered letters on the broken piece of stone that marks his eternity. Who cares? We all should especially those who inhabit the same area that George Lieberknecht called home before his demise in 1846. Fortunately for Lieberknecht and others who lived around Canadochly Lutheran Church in the 18th and 19th centuries, four current members of that church have spent a year as unofficial cemetery conservators. Jim Anspach of Columbia, Gene Smeltzer of Lower Windsor Township, Bill Dehoff of Windsor, and Bruce Herbst of East Prospect have
been getting plenty of exercise but not much recognition as they work to restore the headstones in a small graveyard on the East Prospect Road next to the church’s event hall. The centuries have been hard on the stones, especially the marble ones eroded by years of rain that has slowly dissolved the letters carved on the surface. Trees have fallen, and branches have broken some stones, so these men do their best to piece them back together. Few stones are plumb, so they dig holes to reset the stones and point them skyward. Most of the stones in the old section next to the event hall are from the 1800s, but some, the ones closer to the road, date to the 1700s. Some of these monuments stood near Canadochly Lutheran during our nation’s early years, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. They were here when canal boats traveled the creeks and rivers and when wagon trains carried families across the country to settle
Many of the headstones at the cemetery date back to the 19th century, with at least four marking the resting place of Revolutionary War soldiers.
the West. At least four of the stones mark the resting places of Revolutionary War soldiers. Those markers were decorated with American flags and bronze medallions from the American Legion and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). “We’ve reset more than 30 stones,” said Anspach, who has helped with similar cemetery restoration efforts at Mount Bethel Cemetery in Columbia. “The place looks better and better. We hope to get to the old slate markers in
the spring.” George Lieberknecht’s headstone gives testimony to his German roots, as its epitaph is written in German: “Hier Ruhen Die Gebeine Von George Liebernecht. Geb 3 Feb 1766 Starbolen 12 Sept 1846.” Translation: “Here rest the bones of George Liebernecht, Born Feb. 3, 1799, Died Sept. 12, 1846.” Who would have imagined that four good men would restore that old marker in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic?
