The Ma & Pa Railroad Preservation Society, will offer the fifth annual Christmas City Express, a seasonal train ride and story experience, on Saturdays and Sundays, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, Dec. 7 and 8, and Dec. 14 and 15. Saturday excursions will be available at 5 and 7 p.m. Sunday trips will take place at 2:30 and 5 p.m. This holiday adventure includes a train journey aboard the Ma & Pa Railroad through the Muddy Creek Valley. Doors will open a half-hour before run time so visitors can enjoy a variety of activities after picking up their tickets. They may view antique and modern model trains, make holiday crafts, sing Christmas carols and other well-known holiday songs, join in an antiques guessing game, and explore the general store, built in 1899. Everyone can join in searching for a pickle ornament hidden on one of the many decorated Christmas trees. Those who locate the pickle can enter their name in a drawing for the Pickle Prize. When all have gathered, the group will be escorted by lantern light to the historic grain mill for a dramatic reading of “The Christmas City Express,” a story of a young girl traveling on the
Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad to visit her grandparents on Christmas Eve. A snowstorm strands the train, but a conductor, the young girl, and a visit from Santa ensure that Christmas is a joyful time for all. According to Jean Sansonetti, event coordinator, passengers will then board the motorcar train at the station. After the train ride, hot chocolate and cookies will be available, and visitors may meet the actors. Copies of “The Christmas City Express” as well as other gift items will be available for purchase. Numerous volunteers from the Ma & Pa Railroad Preservation Society plan all year for the Christmas City Express event. Volunteers decorate the historic site for the holidays, including a large Christmas tree on the main floor. Separate ticket prices have been set for adults and for children ages 3 to 12. Those under age 3 will be admitted free. Capacity for each run is limited to 50 passengers, and advance purchase of tickets online is required. Tickets may be secured by visiting www.MaAndPaRailroad.com. Those without internet access may call 717-927-9565. The Ma & Pa Railroad Heritage Village is located at 1258 Muddy

The program of Upward Sports focuses on developing skills rather than pressuring children to win
scheduled games or compete in cheer competitions. Coaches not only teach practical and challenging skills, but also offer practice and game-day halftime experiences that emphasize good sportsmanship and character development. In the program, balanced teams are paired and feature a gametime substitution rotation. This ensures every child gets to play, to start, and to receive the same amount of playing time each
game. Each player is valued based on improvement. Children in kindergarten through fourth grade may stop by the gym for an introduction and simple skills test. Participants may attend evaluation sessions from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10; 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 7; and/or 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 14. Various costs for the 10-week season have been set, covering uniforms, practices and games. The registration deadline is Sunday, Dec. 1. Readers may find out more by emailing RSVP@goto bethlehem.org or visiting Christmas music in anticipation www.gotobethlehem.org/upward of a visit from Santa. The cost of a ticket includes a train ticket, brunch with Santa, a holiday giveaway, gratuity, and a Serve the beverage. For more details and to Best for the purchase tickets, readers may Holiday visit www.steamintohistory.com and look under Calendar.
Excursion With Santa Scheduled Steam Into History will offer a new holiday family tradition with a brand-new event. Breakfast With Santa at the Glen Rock Mill Inn will be held on Monday, Dec. 2. The breakfast with Santa excursion will leave the station in New Freedom at 10 a.m. and arrive at Glen Rock Mill Inn at 10:30 a.m. Ticketholders will enjoy a scenic train ride through the countryside of southern York County and brunch. Riders will hear “The Night Before Christmas” and

Many local businesses make up the fabric of a town, and towns are known and loved for the businesses that have endured. Small businesses help the environment. Shopping locally means consumers do not have to travel far to get their goods and services. The United States Environmental Protection Agency’s research report on walkable downtown centers found small businesses encourage walking and cycling, helping to reduce air pollution from vehicles. Business tax money remains local and can support schools, roads, and municipal services. Local small businesses help to keep cities and towns prosperous and humming along. Such establishments can help build a sense of community and forge lasting relationships. Small businesses are the lifeblood of many communities. Fire Companies Announce Merger A merger between the fire departments in Red Lion, Windsor and Felton boroughs has been in discussions for 18 months. Since May, the memberships of all three departments have met regularly to review bylaws, operating policies, financial implications of the merger and the new vision that was created by the merger board members with constant input from their department members. The firefighters have arranged combined training sessions each week to learn about each other. On Nov. 6, the membership of Leo Fire Company No. 1 in Red Lion voted overwhelmingly to join two other departments in the merger effort, and on the same night, the membership of Union Volunteer Fire Company
in Felton voted unanimously to join the same merger effort. On Nov. 11, the membership of Laurel Fire Company No. 1 in Windsor Borough voted to not pursue the merger with the Union and Leo fire companies. On Nov. 13, the merger board members from the two departments met to finalize the merger. The result is that Alliance Fire and Rescue Services Inc., York County Station No. 77 (AFRS 77) will be incorporated by Sunday, Dec. 1. The new company will cover approximately 19.5 square miles, including six municipalities. Services will continue to be provided to Chanceford Township, Felton borough, North Hopewell Township, Red Lion borough, Windsor Township and York Township.

The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) recognized local member contractor firms for their work performed on area construction projects during the 30th annual ABC Excellence in Construction Awards Gala. The gala was held on Nov. 6 at Spooky Nook Sports, Manheim. The top award of the evening was the Project of the Year, which was awarded to Benchmark Construction Co. Inc. and James Craft & Son Inc. for their project Frederick Street Patient Tower Overbuild. The project was selected due to its community impact, client satisfaction, design features, and positive notoriety. The project was submitted by Benchmark Construction Co. Inc. in the Healthcare Over $25 Million category and by James Craft & Son Inc. in the HVAC Over $5 Million category. The project consisted of a sixstory overbuild and expansion of Lancaster General Hospital’s existing Stauffer building, which occupies the northeast corner of the hospital’s site. Building vertically on a tight, landlocked site created several challenges. Benchmark was able to successfully coordinate steel delivery to the site to continue building while alternating with concrete delivery to pour the completed decking as the building
rose. James Craft & Son Inc. was hired to perform the mechanical piping and HVAC for the vertical expansion and received many deliveries at its own warehouse to transport to the jobsite. Working in an occupied facility next to highly sensitive areas and minimizing the disruption to the hospital staff’s ability to treat patients was the highest priority. This year, the Project of the Year Award finalists also included CCS Building Group, Willow Street - Willow Valley Chapel Relocation, Lancaster (Category: Miscellaneous/Special Projects); Keystruct Construction Inc., York - Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church Elevator Addition, Hummelstown (Category: Institutional Under $2 Million); Kinsley Construction Inc., York - York Traditions Bank Tenant Fit-out, York (Category: Commercial Under $2 Million); Mowery PSL, Mechanicsburg - Westminster Place II at Windy Hill Village, Philipsburg (Category: Residential New MultiUnit); Wohlsen Construction Company, Lancaster - CityGate Medical Office Building and Corporate Center, Lancaster (Category: Commercial $10-$25 Million); and Wohlsen Construction Company, Lancaster - Amtrak Harrisburg Station - Baggage Bridge Removal, Harrisburg (Category: Miscellaneous/Special Projects). The gala was attended by more than 350 contractors, project owners, design professionals, and guests, including Sen. Ryan Aument, who presented
the chapter with a 60th anniversary resolution. This year’s program featured 82 entries, judged using specific criteria regarding the quality of construction and workmanship by a panel of construction design professionals. The Excellence Award, the top honor, was given to the highest scoring project in each category, providing it earned at least 90 points. The Merit Award, second place, was given to all other pro-
jects within each category that scored 80 or more points. The Excellence Award winners at the Keystone Chapter level are now eligible to enter at the national level and compete against the best in the industry from all 69 ABC chapters nationwide. A list of all of the Excellence Award and Merit Award winners is available at https://abckeystone.org/abc-key stone-awards-top-contractors-for -excellence-in-construction-at -2019-eic-gala/.
