The story of the birth of Jesus will come to life from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, when Susquehanna Grace Community Church (SGCC), 6694 Sunrise Ave., Wrightsville, invites the public to travel on the Road to Bethlehem. The church has been presenting the drive-through Nativity for decades, said Nikki Sandman, a member of the church outreach team. “The young families of SGCC over 40 years ago wanted to have a Christmas event for their children and families of the community that celebrated the true meaning of Christmas,” she explained. Visitors to Road to Bethlehem can expect a fun, familyfriendly way to celebrate the Christmas holiday. “The Nativity includes 11 scenes with over 30 actors and live animals depicting the journey to Bethlehem and the birth of Jesus,” Sandman stated. “Actors are in full costume, and the live animals add an amazing feel to the

night. The driveway is lined with luminarias, and visitors can listen in their cars to our radio station playing a variety of Christmas songs.” According to Sandman, the church continues to offer the event for one reason: Love. “(It’s about) our love for Jesus Christ,” she stated, “and our love for the community.” The event is free, but food and monetary donations will be accepted for Hearts for Hunger, a food pantry serving Red Lion and surrounding areas. “Road to Bethlehem is an event that reminds families of the true meaning of Christmas,” Sandman said. “The live Nativity is a unique way to bring the Bible to life and captures the attention of all who drive through. This year, Road Susquehanna Grace Community Church invites the to Bethlehem gives families public to travel the Road to Bethlehem at a the opportunity to make drive-through Nativity on Saturday, Dec. 12. We encourage families to pack their car with good snacks, warm blankets and cameras. This is a night where the ‘no contact’ of the land can’t outshine the connection to the Lord Jesus.” For more information on the event, readers may visit SGCC’s Facebook page, www.facebook .com/contagiouschurch.sgcc or follow the church on Instagram More than 30 actors will portray 11 scenes about the at https://instagram.com birth of Jesus on Road to Bethlehem at Susquehanna /contagiouschurch_sgcc. lege of Pennsylvania (YCP) in memory of his late wife to name the Dr. Donald E. and Lois J. Myers School of Nursing and Health Professions. A 1951 graduate of York Junior College (YJC), the predecessor of York College of Pennsylvania, Myers said the gift allowed him to recognize the college’s role as a stepping stone to his 40-plus-year career as a physician in York and also to honor his wife’s memory. The gift will provide a transformational opportunity for the School of Nursing and Health Professions to develop new programs in the health sciences, such as occupational therapy. YCP has been planning to add this program and others for several years but did not have the right funding until the Myers family stepped in with its gift. The recipient of a Rotary Club of York scholarship, Myers graduated from YJC with an associate degree in chemistry and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Franklin & Marshall College. He then served two years of active duty during the Korean War in the Army Medical Corps. Myers completed medical school at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1960. Myers returned to York to complete an internship and residency at Memorial Hospital after graduating from medical school. After several years working in the Memorial Medical Center, he bought his own office on East Market Street, where he practiced until his retirement.

She served as a reading specialist at the Dallastown Middle School until her retirement. Donald’s gift is part of YCP’s comprehensive campaign, EVOLVE: The Campaign for York College, which launched publicly on Oct. 1. EVOLVE began in the summer of 2017 with the creation of the Strategic Plan for a Greater York College. Since then, thousands of donors have supported seven areas of focus: Academic Excellence and Innovation, Spartan Athletics, the York College Fund, Scholarships, York Country Day School, the Center for Collaborative Innovation (including the new Knowledge Park, the Engaged Scholars Program, and the Center for Academic Innovation), and Spartan Commons, the new center of campus and gateway to learning. New Organization Aims To Promote Faith And Art of a venue where artists could build community while deepening their faith in Christ. In October 2019, Miller met with a group of visual artists to invite them to participate in creating Poiema Visual Arts. Although the pandemic has slowed down the process somewhat, the team drafted a statement of faith focusing on orthodox, Gospelcentered beliefs, and in August, it opened applications for board members. Currently, five of the 10 positions are vacant, and applications will be accepted until they are filled. The organization’s mission is to facilitate discipleship, education, and community for Christian visual artists in Pennsylvania. The initial focus is on Berks, Chester, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties. The board has set goals to make connec-

tions with churches to give leaders the tools to embrace artistry within their congregations; host biennial conferences, with the first planned for 2023; acquire an unused church building to develop as a sacred space, art gallery, maker space, coffee shop, and store for art supplies and art- and faith-related books; and develop educational partnerships with colleges and universities. Currently, the organization is building a database of artists and supporters who would like to be apprised of progress, and it is seeking legal assistance for the application for 401(c)(3) status. “We’re praying our way forward,” Miller commented. To learn more about Poiema Visual Arts and to be added to the digital mailing list, individuals may visit www.poiemavisualarts.org.

Poiema. The Greek word pronounced “poy-A-muh” appears in the Apostle Paul’s letter to the church at Ephesus in the Christian Bible. “We are (God’s) workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works,” reads the English Standard Version (ESV) of Ephesians 2:10. Poiema, which the ESV translates as “workmanship,” can also mean “masterpiece, artwork, handiwork, or craftsmanship.” “They’re metaphors that really resound with an artist,” said Jeremy Miller, founder and CEO of Poiema Visual Arts. “That verse is pivotal because … your worth isn’t from what you’ve made but what the Creator has made. But you have to do something with it.” Miller, who lives with his

wife and son in Akron and is the resident teaching artist at Strasburg-Heisler Library, was influenced by his grandparents’ participation in folk art. As a youth, he was active in music performance and theater. While earning a bachelor’s degree in Bible at Lancaster Bible College (LBC), Miller wrestled with reconciling his artistic gifts with his faith. “I’m a Christian and an artist, and I don’t know how to do both,” Miller told his adviser. The outcome of that conversation involved a year of study and the construction of a theological framework for Miller’s gifts. Over the next two decades, as Miller and his family moved to Austria, Virginia, Texas, and back to Pennsylvania, he earned master’s degrees in biblical studies and Christian education, and he developed the dream
