York County Libraries will hold a 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Midway Celebration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25, in the Children’s Library Family Place at Martin Library, 159 E. Market St., York. The event is free and is geared to children from birth through age 5 and their families. The celebration will include storytelling by award-winning author Anthony D. Fredericks and children’s author M.J. McCluskey. The authors’ books will be available for purchase and signing. STEAM stations will be set up in the Family Place, providing hands-on opportunities for families to explore and experiment. Families are invited to register their children for the free 1000 Books program during the celebration. The 2020 session of the program is six months from its graduation ceremony in July, but there is still time to participate, according to York County Libraries director of youth services Paula Gilbert. Additionally, current participants who have reached reading milestones may collect their achievement prizes during the event. Light refreshments will be served. Any questions about the celebration should
be directed to Martin Library youth services staff at 717-849-6942. The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten early childhood initiative encourages parents to read 1,000 books with their children before the children start kindergarten. Families read at their own pace, and the 1,000book goal can be reached done in as little as one year if families read three books per day. The York County Libraries program is an offshoot of a national initiative. Children from the day they are born to the day they start kindergarten can participate. There is no cost, and all that is needed to participate is a free York County Libraries card. Registration is ongoing at local libraries, and families receive a passport to help track progress at each 100-book milestone. When participants reach 500 and 1,000 books, they are awarded special reading incentives at their library. According to Gilbert, staff members countywide can provide parents with book recommendations and tips for engaging children in reading. They also offer a variety of free educational programs and story times year-round. York County Libraries launched the program in 2018 and held its first graduation See Library Celebration pg 3

York Day Nursey Holds Fishing Show, Flea Market Scheduled Spaghetti Dinner
Re-Source York held a board of directors meeting at Bell Socialization Services on Dec. 17, 2019. Rita Whitney, a relatively new board member, was surprised by Bell’s community engagement team with a large sparkly “engagement” ring in recognition of her varied involvement with
the two organizations. Get Engaged recognition spotlights community members who are engaged in their community by actively supporting Bell with their time and personal involvement. For the past few years, Whitney has served as a judge for Bell’s annual Mental Health Awareness Month art show and donated art supplies from her former downtown shop. She leads yoga classes for Bell’s intellectual disability social recreation program. She coordinated a collaborative effort with Second Chance Development Foundation Cyber Café students and volunteered to create a mural that was installed earlier this year at Bell Family Shelter to honor Adopt-a-Day donors. She also spoke at this year’s agency celebra-
tion on the theme of working together. Whitney’s involvement with Bell will continue through her service on the Re-Source York board, which supports Bell through quarterly donations, and her role as director of communication and community engagement for the Cultural Alliance of York, which funded a grant project for Bell service users to take art classes at Creative York. Bell Socialization Services Inc. is a 501(c)(3) human services agency based in York that provides housing and living skills supports to individuals living with mental illness, people with intellectual disabilities, and homeless families. Since 1966, Bell programs have provided an environment of support and empowerment to help people throughout the greater York/Hanover area improve their quality of living.
Re-Source York board member Rita Whitney (left) was recognized by Averie Clark, director of community engagement at Bell Socialization Services in York, with an “engagement” ring in honor of Whitney’s involvement. Bell’s Get Engaged recognition spotlights community members for their community engagement.

Series To Kick Off At York Racing Xtravaganza The first race in the 2020 Wicked Cushion Esports Championship Series will kick off the season on Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Racing Xtravaganza show being held at the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave, York. Featuring $2,500 in prize money and a chance to drive a Scott Gobrecht 410 Sprint Car, the event will be composed of 96 of the best sim racers on dirt competing both online and in person at the show in York. The feature race will be made up of 12 in-person drivers alongside 12 online racers. The online qualifying will be filled by 48 registered drivers that will compete for the 12 remaining spots in the A-feature points race later that night. Following the completion of both qualifying races, both online and “live seat,” a field of 24 cars will be set for the first points race in the 2020 Wicked Cushion Esports Championship Series.
