On Friday, May 1, individuals and businesses will have the opportunity to take part in the third annual Give Local York, a 24-hour online giving event that will benefit more than 300 nonprofit organizations that serve York County. Community members may donate to the nonprofit organization of their choice at www.give localyork.org on that day, and all donations will be enhanced with bonus funds provided by Give Local York sponsors. “I like it refer to it as a holiday for York County because it’s a day to celebrate all of the great nonprofit organizations that we have,” said Meagan Given, executive director of Give Local York. “It’s a very high-energy day with lots of events going on.” Participating organizations are

York USA Dance Chapter 3008 will hold a “Happy Hearts” ballroom social dance on Sunday, Feb. 23, at Alert Fire Hall, 3118 N. George St., Emigsville. A beginner-intermediate bolero lesson, taught by Mandy Iglesias, will be given from 3 to 4 p.m. Deb Eppley will play a ballroom, Latin and swing music variety for dancing and listening from 4 to 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided, and donations of appetizers, desserts and snacks are appreciated. Dancers of all ages and experience levels are welcome. To keep as many people on the dance floor as possible, a new feature, the Come Dance With Me Spot, has been added. This is intended to help dancers find a partner who knows the steps to a dance they want to do, who is available to dance to a song they want to dance to or who can step in when their regular partner is not available to dance. Separate admission fees have been set for members, for guests and for students with ID. Included in the admission fee will be the dance, the music, refreshments and a door prize drawing. Information about area dance instructors, dance clubs and dances can be found in the Local Resources section under Pages at www.danceinyork.net. Other information about York USA Dance Chapter 3008 is available on the chapter Facebook page, by emailing yorkchapter3008@gmail.com or by calling 717-885-6370.

encouraged to plan an event for the community to take part in on May 1, whether by themselves or in partnership with other participating nonprofits or local businesses to raise awareness about Give Local York. The day will culminate with a Give Local York celebration from 5 to 10 p.m. in downtown York during First Friday. With hundreds of organizations set up and live music and dancing in the square, Given said, “it just becomes a big party.” From 9 p.m. to midnight, a New Year’s Eve-style event will be hosted at the Valencia Ballroom, 142 N. George St., York. That celebration will close out Give Local York with a countdown to midnight. Confetti cannons will go off and there will be a balloon drop as the grand total amount raised is announced. More than $3.2 million was generated through the 2019 Give Local York event. Given said that while organizers are of course hoping to top that number, the focus for 2020 has shifted from setting a financial goal to having 10,000 unique donors - a hefty but achievable jump from last year’s 8,777 donors. “The focus on individual donors is shifting our marketing approach this year,” Given explained. “We are still shining a light on each of the organizations and what they do, but we are also doing a lot of spotlighting volunteers.”

During Give Local York on May 1, people will be encouraged to donate online to support their choice of more than 300 nonprofit organizations in a 24-hour giving spree. All contributions will be enhanced thanks to the donations of event sponsors.

Sherry Welsh, 3P Ride adminstrator, talked about the organization and its participation in Give Local York, a countywide day of fundraising set for May 1:

Why is the organization excited to participate in Give Local York this year? We often take for granted the ability to travel to everyday locations - a place to buy milk, receive an immunization, maintain employment, or learn the alphabet. We forget that without these connections, we cannot provide for our basic needs or dare to explore opportunities for our future. rabbittransit has searched for mobility solutions to address these unmet needs. Through the work of a team of dedicated stakeholders, 3P Ride Inc. works to enhance public transit. 3P Ride seeks opportunities to offer the gift of mobility and support transportation needs that fall outside of traditional funding sources. 3P Ride has prioritized three mobility initiatives: veterans transportation, access to care, and food access. York College’s theater program will kick off its 2020 season with the new play “Blacktop Sky” in the Perko black box in Waldner Performing Arts Center on the college campus, 441 Country Club Road, York. Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20, through Saturday, Feb. 22, as well as at 3 p.m. on Feb. 22. Written by Christina Anderson and directed by Harrisburg-area playwright and director Paul Hood, this contemporary play focuses on three African American teenagers trying to make their dreams come true. Ida, played by Jane Ahamdi, a nursing major from Hanover, wants to escape the projects where she grew up, but when she witnesses a violent police confrontation and bonds with a young homeless man, played by J’von Weems, a fine art major from Baltimore, she finds herself making choices that will affect her future. Theater major and 2018 graduate Craig Babineaux will return to round out the cast. “Blacktop Sky” examines the intersection of love, poverty, and violence and asks audiences to think about world events and how they affect the next generation. The production will be directed by Hood, who last directed the fall 2018 play “Nat Turner in Jerusalem,” and designed by past theater majors Devon Morgan and Tiffany Zellner alongside sound designer Tosin Olufolabi from the Washington, D.C., area. Tickets are free. Seats can be reserved by visiting www.ycp.edu/theatre or by calling the box office at 717-600-3868.

focusing on the phototypesetting era and the transition that occurred as a result of the Digital Revolution. A discussion with Briar Levit, director and producer, will follow the film. Guest artist Deborah Dancy will speak on “Turbulence” at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 12. Dancy is a Guggenheim fellow and professor emeritus at the University of Connecticut. The “Fine Art and Graphic Design Senior Exhibition” will run from Friday, April 24, through Saturday, May 9. Student presentations will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 25. In their final semester, fine art and graphic design students will exhibit their final bodies of work and senior projects, respectively, demonstrating the formal and conceptual growth they have achieved. The event will open with PechaKuch-style presentations, followed by a reception and

announcement of awards. An Appell Fellow exhibition by Amber Wiesberg, Class of 2019, will run from Wednesday, May 27, through Saturday, June 27, in the Cora Miller Gallery, Wolf Hall. The Appell Arts Fellowship is an 11month residency program awarded to a graduate of York College’s art program. “Typorama 9.0” will be on display from May 27 to June 27 in the Brossman Gallery, Wolf Hall. The exhibit will demonstrate the varied media use and experimentation of the college’s graphic design program. Students engage in wordplay, expression, and analysis of form in a distinctively letter-based way. The events are free and open to the public. Tickets are not required. For additional information on any of the events, readers may contact Allison Altland at 717-815-1354 or aaltland@ycp.edu or visit www.ycp.edu.

Tour Scholarship Winners Posted The York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) recently announced that 14 groups from 12 schools, totaling approximately 1,009 students, will participate in the YCSWA’s Tour Scholarship Program in 2020. The Tour Scholarship awardees for 2020 are: Devers K-8 Elementary - Kelly Petry and Dr. Jan Protopapas, grades three to eight; Dover Elementary - Diane Benner, grade one; Leib Elementary Teresa Dull, grade four; North Salem Elementary - Nichole Neiman and Deb Wirth, grade two; Orendorf Elementary - Sue Smith, grade three; Paradise Elementary Kathy Gross, grade three; Roundtown Elementary - Mark Fife, grade three; Shrewsbury Elementary - Cindy Procopio, grade four; Southern Elementary - Hayley Leach, grade four; Spring Grove Area High School - Celeste Barnes, grades 10 to 12; St. Rose of Lima School - Shelby Yinger, grades three to six; and Wrightsville Elementary Lesa Uffelman, grade two. For more than 20 years, the Tour Scholarship Program has been offered by the YCSWA to local schools to pay the costs of buses and drivers needed for classes to take field trips to the York County Resource Recovery Center (RRC) and Education Center. In return for the tour scholarship, participants complete an activity or project on an aspect of solid waste management such as recycling or litter prevention. The RRC is a technologically advanced and environmentally safe waste-to-energy facility where York County’s household trash is used as fuel to produce electricity. Tour participants get a first-hand glimpse into this process beginning with a presentation followed by a walking tour of key areas of the facility. The YCSWA facilitates responsible solid waste management through an integrated strategy that emphasizes waste reduction, education, recycling and resource recovery. The YCSWA is the owner of the York County Resource Recovery Center in Manchester Township and owns and operates a small load drop-off facility, a recyclable materials drop-off center, and an education center.
