Commonwealth Charter Academy (CCA), a statewide public cyber charter school for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, recently announced that its Real World Design Challenge (RWDC) team of six students won this year’s statewide competition, marking the 10th consecutive year of CCA capturing the state title. The RWDC was created to help build the United States’ STEM workforce by providing high school students from across the country the opportunity to work on reallife engineering challenges in a collaborative, team environment. The RWDC tasks students with a professional engineering challenge to design and implement unmanned aerial systems - more commonly known as drones that will help solve modern-day

issues faced by global industries. The 2020 challenge required students to design a drone that could carry and deliver packages weighing up to 5 kilograms, make continuous deliveries through a neighborhood, and complete its route with at least 20 minutes of battery life remaining. When designing its drone, the team had to consider a variety of challenges, including power management, weight, and design efficiency. All designs were required to include upward-facing rotors, effectively reducing the battery life of the drone. To overcome this issue, the CCA team designed a drone that takes off with rotors pointing upward, then switches to a hybrid airfoil for long-distance flight to conserve battery power. CCA this year competed against

York County Community Foundation (YCCF) invested $6.7 million in the York County community by awarding grants to 375 nonprofits in 2019. This total reflects grants from YCCF’s Fund for York County, the Hahn Home Fund for Embracing Aging, Memorial Health Fund, and the rest of the 575 funds housed at the foundation. More than 1,100 grants were awarded to support York County charities to improve people’s lives and build a vibrant community. Volunteer committees and foundation staff use community plans, research, and the intentions of donors who have

on animal wellness and safety. This is the first fund aimed at animal welfare. YCCF staff will implement a process to identify charitable organizations that meet the criteria to receive grants from the Mabel Slifer Fund for People and Animals in Need and distribute grants accordingly. No inquiries about grants will be accepted at this time. Born in Blue Bell, Slifer graduated from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science with a Bachelor of Science in bacteriology. She also had a master’s degree in library science from Drexel Institute of Technology. She lived and worked in Philadelphia for 55 years. After retiring from Campbell Soup Company, she moved to York. She later moved to Luther Acres in Lititz, where she lived until her death. For more information about the YCCF, readers may visit www.yccf.org.

This started 14 new funds to provide that support in perpetuity. Gifts made to YCCF are endowed, which means that they are invested to grow over time and create an impact that is exponentially greater than a onetime gift. People or organizations interested in learning how YCCF can help them meet their charitable needs can visit www.yccf.org for more information.

Before Mabel L. Slifer passed away in 2017, she developed a specially crafted estate plan that placed her entire residuary estate in the hands of the York County Community Foundation (YCCF) to carry out her charitable goals. In December 2019, her estate entrusted YCCF with $1 million to create two funds at YCCF - the Mabel L. Slifer Fund designated for the York County SPCA and Salvation Army of York and a second fund that will benefit people and animals in need. The Mabel Slifer Fund for People and Animals in Need will award grants for two purposes. The first is to support organizations that help people in need, be it the homeless, the poor, the hungry, or others in crisis. The second purpose is to support organizations that provide homes to stray and abandoned animals, curb animal cruelty, and educate the public
