Rite Aid customers can support the lifesaving work of Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals during a critical time through Rite Aid’s annual Miracle Balloon fundraising campaign, running through Saturday, Aug. 8. Rite Aid customers can add a donation to their in-store transactions, as well as donate online through Rite Aid’s social media channels. All proceeds will be received by the local community’s children’s hospital to fund critical treatments and health care services and to provide pediatric medical equipment and charitable care for 53
children’s hospitals in the communities that Rite Aid serves. This year will mark the 26th year that Rite Aid has conducted the Miracle Balloon fundraising campaign benefiting CMN Hospitals, raising and donating $95 million in support of children’s hospitals. This year’s effort comes with an unprecedented pandemic adding urgency to the cause. Children’s hospitals and their systems are actively working to develop COVID-19 treatments and vaccines. At the same time, investments in telehealth service, personal protective equipment and coronavirus testing
supplies have escalated hospitals’ expenses while the suspension of elective surgeries and routine procedures is costing hospitals revenue and impacting children in need of care. The Rite Aid Foundation will also direct funds raised through KidCents, its customer-generated charitable giving program dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children living in communities Rite Aid serves, through the duration of the campaign. In April, the foundation also issued a special $250,000 grant to CMN Hospitals to address immediate needs related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Through Friday, July 31, U-Stor-It will accept donations for the Children’s Home of York (CHOY). Items can be dropped off at either U-Stor-It location - 1331 N. Sherman St., York, or 2786 S. Queen St., Dallastown. Items needed by CHOY include pens and pencils, both regular and colored; highlighters; crayons; markers; notebook paper; calculators; rulers; glue sticks; backpacks; and composition
notebooks, with the exception of spiral notebooks. CHOY was established in 1865 to provide services to the orphans of the York County community. During the 1970s, the agency saw that it needed to re-engineer its services to meet the needs of the children and youths it served by providing smaller living situations. The agency responded by developing group homes and foster care. CHOY, through the work of its
board and staff members, has evolved through the years. The evolutionary process has taken the agency from the simple form of an orphanage to that of a continuum of services ranging from emergency shelter for safe refuge for abused and neglected children to state-of-the-art residential treatment facilities that offer therapeutic intervention to children, youths and their families who are working on complicated mental health
situations. In addition, there are a variety of capacities like schools and group homes, each focused on its effort to improve the lives of children and families. Giant Completes Pollinator Field Cheryl Cook added that nearly one-third of the nation’s food supply depends on pollinators, making bees an essential part of the food supply chain and ecosystem. The Giant Company has also been selected as the first grocery retailer and first Pennsylvania participant to take part in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s InSPIRE study, where scientists measure and track the performance of the pollinatorfriendly ground cover for applications to future solar energy projects. In addition to the benefits of the plants, the new solar array coupled with the one currently installed on the roof of the Giant
Company headquarters will reduce 4.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide in the environment and generate enough power for the entire building. Native seed mixes provided by Ernst Conservation Seeds will act as a vegetative solution to beautify the site and provide valuable ecological functions. The Giant Company hopes the native meadow established will create a habitat for pollinators, birds and other small wildlife while improving the quality of the soil beneath it, reducing runoff and creating an attractive backdrop to the site. The field includes more than 20 varieties of wildflowers native to the northeast and central Pennsylvania like
butterfly milkweed, mountain mint, blue mistflower and golden Alexander. Robin Ernst, president of Ernst Pollinator Service, explained that as the field matures over the next few years, more than one million pollinator-attracting plants will provide pollen and nectar sources for honey bees and other pollinators, which will in turn pollinate local farm fields. The Giant Company also announced a new strategic partnership with Planet Bee Foundation. Based in San Francisco, Planet Bee is a nonprofit organization focused on driving awareness for pollinators while creating environmental stewards
of all ages, in turn contributing to the well-being of bees. In celebration of the new partnership and National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company announced a $50,000 donation to Planet Bee Foundation. Planet Bee Foundation has constructed the beehives for the pollinator-friendly solar field and will tend to the health of the colonies as the bees provide their essential pollinator services to the local ecosystem. The foundation is also helping the Giant Company develop educational signs that will be installed along the on-campus walking path to drive awareness about the importance of bees to the grocery and agricultural supply chains.

Beekeepers across the United States lost an estimated 40.7% of their honey bee colonies from April 2018 to April 2019, according to the latest annual nationwide survey conducted by the University of Maryland-led nonprofit Bee Informed Partnership. This initiative aims to create a synergistic environment, which contributes both to clean energy and support for bee and pollinator populations needed within the agriculture industry. West York Area School District second-graders at Lincolnway Elementary recently participated in a unique writing activity coordinated by teacher Christine McKee. The class was paired with Emingee’s Fastnachts and Coffee, located at Morningstar Market in Thomasville, and tasked with creating a new doughnut flavor and submitting a persuasive writing piece about why their idea was the best. Bakery co-owner Melanie Cornman read the 24 entries and chose the ideas presented by students Jaydaci Phillips and Brianna Lindenmuth. The
student-created doughnut flavors were made and sold at the bakery on May 30 and 31. Jaydaci and Brianna were recognized on May 31. Jaydaci’s entry was called “Holy Sweet Cannoli” and based on a dessert from her favorite pizza shop. The powdered doughnut features a sweet cannoli cream filling with a drizzle of caramel and miniature chocolate chips on top. Brianna’s entry was called “The Minty” and based on mint chocolate chip ice cream and chocolate mints. The chocolate doughnut features green mint icing and miniature chocolate chips on top.

most votes will each win a $25,000 grant. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, Nov. 4. Last year, 163,000 people cast a total of 4.4 million votes in support of their favorite causes, selecting winners from small towns and big cities. Since the program began, State Farm has awarded $8 million in support of more than 300 causes. Free Online STEM Camp Slated questions, structured craft activities and career exploration for children in kindergarten through fourth grade. Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education is a student-centered approach that encourages development of skills such as problem solving, curiosity, communication and design thinking. WITF, the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Intermediate Units (IUs) 12, 13 and 15, partnered to provide the summer camp in a format that may spark interest in STEM and its related careers, support different styles of learning, remove obstacles to participation, and meet educational objectives in a rewarding way. The IUs recognized obstacles to participation could include families not having craft resources or broadcast television signals at home. To overcome these challenges, WITF assembled 3,000 resource bags and WITF President and CEO Ron Hetrick helps to assemble the 3,000 300 antennas for IUs to distribute resource bags for the “Summer STEM Adventure!” program. to partner locations that serve families directly. Each free resource bag contains pencils, a pencil sharpener, crayons, colored pencils, paper plates, construction paper, safety scissors, a glue stick and the curriculum packet with instructions in English and Spanish. During the eight-week camp, families will watch featured PBS KIDS programs like “Wild Kratts” and “Hero Elementary” on WITF TV to learn about animal habitats, camouflage, mimicry, structure and more. A discussion guide and key vocabulary will help caregivers talk to their children about what WITF announced that central Pennsylvania families seeking a fun, educational experience at home can join the free “Summer STEM Adventure!”
